Hello, I was reading your post and wondered if your family has always been in Maryland? I am looking for information on one Pillow Fowlkes who was a slave of the Fowlkes family. The original Fowlkes ancestor, Gabriel Fowlkes, was born in Wales, 1696, died 1775 in Amelia, VA. Pillow lived in Dyersburg, Tennessee but I suspect he lived in other states before that. On a slave schedule I found the name of the slave owner, William Parkham Fowlkes. If you have any information on how your family came to Maryland, I'd be more than happy to hear about your ancestry. Thank you!

After my grandpa passed away a few year ago, my grandama stayed in Ann Arbor, for a little while, then moved out to Sturgis with my uncle Hunter, and then eventually moved into a nursing home, where she passed away.

If you have anymore questions, I would be glad to try and answer you, I hope you recieve this.
God Bless

Gabriel Fowlkes of Southside Virginia book

I have just completed the revision of the 2nd edition of "Just Plain Fowlkes," which I believe to be the most comprehensive and exhaustive genealogical work on the Fowlkes line back to Gabriel I.

This edition is over 225 pages in length and includes an Index with over 320 different family surnames and approximately 1400 Fowlkes entries. It is written in narrative form with a logical numbering system for each generation, that provides the reader with a clear and exact system for tracing their Fowlkes lineage.

This book is only $27.99 and can be ordered online at: http://www.lulu.com/content/271691 Postage is extra, but the very cheap book rate is available.

If you ever wondered "am I a descendent of old Gabe?" or wonder how your Fowlkes line may fit in, if you want to learn Fowlkes family history or how the family migrated to where you are now, this is the book for you. If you have been frustrated or disappointed in books that advertise Fowlkes genealogy information, but seem to be more standard immigration history and "how to search records" information with very little Fowlkes-specific and useful material, then you must have this book.

Feel free to email me with any questions you may have.

Fowlkes/ Crowley/ Cralle/ Croley connections?

This thread is so old [ 2001] that I don't know whether any of you are still monitoring. HOWEVER, I got a tip to check out the Cralle/ Fowlkes connections and this thread came up.

I descend from both the Fowlkes and Crowley families, who were in Middle Tennessee during the early 1800's [Dekalb County], thusly:

Fowlkes line:

Direct Descendants of Gabriel Fowlkes (1696 - 1775)

1 Gabriel Fowlkes	1696 - 1775
.	2 Gabriel Jr. Fowlkes	1720 - 1793
.....	3 Thompson B. Fowlkes	1751 - 1817
........	4 Nathaniel Fowlkes	1778 - 1839
............	5 Gabriel Fowlkes	1833 - 1898
...............	6 Estelle Fowlkes	1875 - 1963
...................	7 AnnieLee Frazier	1895 - 1988
......................	8 Carl Allen Crowley, Jr.	1926 - 1988
..........................	9 Carl Allen Crowley III	1951 -

----------------------------------------------

Crowley line:

Direct Descendants of John J. Crowley

1 John J. Crowley	1808 - 1830
.	2 William Grundy Crowley	1826 - 1909
.....	3 Pleasant Campbell Crowley	1871 - 1951
........	4 Karl Allen Crowley	1894 - 1948
............	5 Carl Allen Crowley, Jr.	1926 - 1988
...............	6 Carl Allen Crowley III	1951 -
_________________________________________________

Ring any bells? I am at a brick wall on the Crowley line at John J. Crowley (abt 1808- abt 1830). All I have on him and his wife Elizabeth is the following from Goodspeed's History of Tennessee:

"Maj. [ William Grundy] Crowley, An ex-judge and attorney at law of Smithville, was born in Smith (now Dekalb) County in 1830. His parents, John J. and Elizabeth Crowley, were both natives of Virginia. The father was of Scotch-Irish descent, a farmer by occupation. He married in his native State and in 1830 came to Tennessee by way of the Cumberland River. He died in Smith County in May of the same year, when but twenty-two years of age. His wife was born in 1810."

The "from Virginia" clue is not very helpful because until the Civil War Virginia included all of West Va. as well. I have tried everything I can think of to break through the brick wall: numerous posts like this one, DNA testing, searching the surname "Grundy", and the rather unusual way we pronounce the surname Crowley [ we use a long-o, rhymes with "holy" instead of the more prevalent "Crawley" or "ow" [ rhymes with "how"] pronunciations.

Just trying again. If any of this rings a bell let me know!
Thanks,

Carl Crowley cacrowley@georgialaw.org

Our family, the Jeffries of Crewe VA have traced their lineage back to a Henry Fowlkes (1795) who married Jane (1800). They had a daughter Charlotte Macklin Fowlkes who married James Collins Epps. Since we have so many Fowlkes in our family, we are certain that Charlotte or her father Henry must have had brothers to carry the name. She was my great-great grandmother and the last Fowlkes we have on record. The Crewe connection is just too real. I am interested in finding out if there is a possible link. I can be contacted at caleb1517@hotmail.

Calvin Stanley

Do you know if she had any brothers? My great grandfather was born in Crewe (also African American)around the same time and his name was Campbell Fowlkes and married Cora Fitzgerald. I'm usually in Crewe once a month as many of the Fowlkes family still live there, but I will go to my grandfather's land which has a cemetery on it with many Fowlkes family members and hopefully see what I can find. You can reply to lfowlkes1@msn.com if need be.
LaTonya Fowlkes

FOWLES (several different) in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA)

Fowlkes, Mr. F. E.
Fowlkes, Mr. F. F.
Fowlkes, John G.

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes).

I extracted all of the names (& some other information) from the yearbook & have put them on my genealogy web site (total of 13 web pages, containing over 1,900 records; sorted alphabetically by surname).

The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site, not just data about the families I am researching. I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...
