Sure will send over. I will also take a picture of the home as it stands now...very much altered but you can see the original wall and there is part of the gate that was there then. Some of the trees that were in the lantern slide can be seen still today.

Take care.
Lydia

You are quite welcome! Wasn't sure if it was John or Leonard but I have gazed on the Frailey home since I was born. My home was built in 1949 on land that was formerly the graveyard of the Haddington Methodist Episcopal Church which was across the street. The Fraileys are mentioned in the history of the chuch which I will scan in for you and send sometime next week as I am leaving for vacation. Another researcher obtained it from St. George's Methodist Church in Philadelphia and sent it to me. It is quite interesting and gives not only a history of Haddington but mentions those folks that were instrumental in it development and the Fraileys are mentioned. Take care and I'll send that along next week!
Lydia
P.S. Yes the lantern slide # and description apply to the slide.

I believe that Leonard Frailey or John Frailey lived at 67th and Haverford Avenue in Philadelphia(formerly the Haddington region). I have a copy of a lantern slide from the Historical Society that depicts the Frailey house and if you magnify it you can see the people in the front yard posing for the photograph(presumably the Fraileys). I have attached it below.
The building is still there...it's an Italian American Social club. It looks much like it does below except there are modernizations. I live across the street from it on land that was formerly the Haddington Methodist Episcopal Church of which Leonard Frailey was a contributor and elder.
Lydia

Hi Dick,
I am also a grandchild of Jeanette Frailey (daughter of Eleanor). Jeanette had 7 children and the two you couldn't remember are Margaret and Eleanor. Elizabeth "Betty" is the only survivor. She just had her 80th birthday and she lives in Greenwood, Indiana. She sings in the church choir and still drives her car.
I never met Jeanette because she must have died around the time I was born in 1948, according to your statistics. Do you have the name of Jeanette's mother as Mary Mathews? Do you know the name of John Joseph's mother?
You are right about history--it is fun!
Carolyn Schultheiss

Descendants of Christian Freiley in Tennessee

[I am cross-posting this from the Freiley board]

I posted a query a few years ago and two of you were nice enough to respond, but I didn't followup. My apologies - a family emergency put everything on hold.

I am back in the hunt of my Freiley ancestors and wanted to post an updated descendants chart to see if anyone recognizes the line. I obtained a transcript of the Freiley Family ancestry that was written in 1955 and was the recollections of 4 older Freiley women, mostly from Rhea County, TN about their familes. I have since found a number of legitimate sources that have confirmed much of what they wrote.

They were all descendants of John Freiley b. 1796 KY d. 1892 TN. His father was Christian Freiley, but they could not remember any details about him. Here are the opening lines of the document:

"John Freiley, my great-great grandfather, was born in 1796. He lived in Allen County, Kentucky as a child. His father was Christian Freiley. He had a brother called Daniel. He said he was of French descent. The name, originally spelled Freley, was changed when the first Freileys went through customs in New York.

In 1816, at age 21, John married a 17-year-old girl, Mary Elizabeth Billingsley (called Betsy). Her father, an Englishman, was Jonathan Billingsley, a mercantile dealer.

The weather in Kentucky was strange in 1816; there was ice in July. Only cold-weather crops matured. That made for a lean year when John & Betsy married. They lived in a log cabin on Chigger Hill. John taught the three R's in a little log schoolhouse."

Before all of you out there who descend from the Texas and Illinois lines of Freiley get too excited, there is nothing in the document about Freileys from Texas, Illinois, or Alabama, only Kentucky and Tennessee.

There is another tantalizing statement about Daniel Boone, but I have not had time to find out if it is true. You will see the reference in the descendancy chart that is attached. Here is what they said:

"Great-great Grandfather John had a sister named Jane. She and her family lived a few miles south of the Freiley farm. Her husband was named Boone. Their eldest son was called Daniel after his Grandfather, Daniel Boone; the same Daniel who lived in South Carolina and made a trip through the Cumberland Gap of the Appalachians into Kentucky for the purpose of trapping."

I will consider this just another family story that got handed down from generation to generation and got enhanced along the way until I find some solid sources to confirm or negate this statement.

If any of you have info. on Nicholas and his immediate family I would love to hear from you. I'm a stickler for legitimate sources so please include those as well. I plan to cross-post this on the Frailey board.

Paul

Hi Jackie

Unfortunately, my interest in finding out more about the Fraileys did not happen until after my father-in-law died and he was not very good about passing on information about his family history to his children. So I can not go back very far.

I also have included an article, which lists a "Willie F., Feb 4 1880" which is the correct date of birth and town in IL for my husband's grandfather, so I believe this is his family.

My motivation to start investigating both sides of the family is rather sad. My mother has just been diagnosed with early Alzheimer's and so she and I have been discussing her family and memories and we are trying to get as much information down on paper as she can remember.

Thank you for your email. Any information you may have would be extremely appreciated.

Sincerely,

Deb Frailey

*William Frank Frailey
Born: 04 Feb 1880
Knox, IL, USA
Died: 1957
Superior, Douglas, WI, USA

MARRIED TO:
**Elsie May Upton
Born: 24 Mar 1884 in Mount Pleasant, [county], IA, USA
Died: 1960 in Superior, Douglas, WI, USA

CHILDREN:
1. ***Wilma Frailey (B: 1907)
Born: 1907 in NE, USA
2. ****Charles Upton Frailey (B: 1915)
Born: 27 Mar 1915 [city], [county], MN, USA
Died: 11 Jul 1994 Madison, Dane, WI, USA

*William Frank Frailey is my husband's grandfather. In 1886, page 445

Henry Frailey. This worthy gentleman occupies a farm on section 8, in Cedar Township, and was born in Armstrong County, Pa., Nov. 22, 1832. Here he was raised and lived until his 20th year. His father's name was John Frailey, a prominent native of Pennsylvania, who died at the age of 63 in the year 1859. He married Miss Mary Garry, also a native of the Keystone State, who died in 1869, at the age of 65. They are both buried in the state referred to, and by their union had six children - John, George and William (twins), Margaret, Elizabeth and Henry.

Mr. Frailey, our subject, married Miss Artimitia Kays, on the 6th of March, 1861 [the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index lists a Henry Frailey marrying a Artemesia Keys in Knox County on March 6, 1861]. This good lady was born Feb. 24, 1840, in Cedar Township, this county. She is the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Bracken) Kays, both natives of Kentucky. Her father's birth occurred April 11, 1804, and her mother was born in 1807 and died Jan. 5, 1870. They were the parents of 12 children, viz: William A., Mary, James, Nancy J., Henry, Abigail, Artimitia, Delia A., Jackson, George, Francis and Charles. Of eight children, Mr. Frailey has six living - John A., born Nov. 17, 1862; Mary E., June 5, 1865; Lillie V., May 28, 1869; Charlie, Aug. 26, 1873; George, April 15, 1876; and Willie F., Feb. 4, 1880. These children form a most interesting family and are a great comfort to their parents.

In 1858 Mr. Frailey entered Illinois and worked on a farm by the month for three years. At the close of that time his marriage took place, and in 1866 he purchased 80 acres of good land, to which he has since added other lots, amounting in all to 166 acres. In the year 1875 he erected for himself a very desirable dwelling-house.

This gentleman and his wife are respected members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, while in politics he has always represented the interests of the Republican party. Before closing, it is only right to mention that Mr. Frailey has two interesting grandchildren - Harrison A. L. and George Frailey.

My ancestor Leonard Frailey (Frohlich) emigrated in May of 1750 from Neerach, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland - he sailed on the ship St. Andrew and landed in Philadelphia. He signed his name to the passenger lists as Lienhard Froli - but the Froli was misinterpreted as Groli by historians. Leonard Frailey married Catharine Brandley on May 8, 1752 in the Gloria Dei (Old Swedes) Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. They settled in Germantown and raised a family of 4 boys (Jacob, Rudolph, Peter and John) and two daughters (Catharine and Ann). My ancestor Peter Frailey settled in Reading, Berks Co., PA and later re-settled in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill Co., PA. His son Jacob settled in Lancaster, PA in the early 1800's where my father's line came from.

MY NAME IS DICK HAMMERLY AND THE FRAILEY YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT WAS MY GRANDMOTHER. I DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT HER. I BELIEVE SHE DIED SOMETIME IN THE 1940'S OR EARLY 1950'S. I CAN REMEMBER WHEN SHE DIED. I WAS ABOUT EIGHT OR NINE. I LIVED WITH MY GRANDMOTHER ON MY MOM'S SIDE. WE ONLY LIVED WITH MY GRANDMOTHER TILL I WAS ABOUT 12. I'M 67 SO I KNOW IT WAS NOT IN 1972 AS YOU HAVE POSTED. MY DAD'S NAME WAS ADAM J HAMMERLY. THE HAMMERLY'S HAD 2 BOYS AND, I BELIEVE, 4 GIRLS. BOYS WERE JOHN AND ADAM. GIRLS WERE MARION, BETTY, EVELYN, AND THE LAST ONE ESCAPES ME. I DID NOT KNOW THAT SIDE OF THE FAMILY VERY WELL. I BELIEVE THEY HAVE ALL DIED. I ALSO KNOW THAT GRANDMA FRAILEY WAS CALLED DADE. I WISH THAT I KNEW MORE. IT IS INTERESTING TO KNOW WHERE THEY CAME FROM AND HOW LONG THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE USA. HISTORY IS INTERESTING. THANKS DICK HAMMERLY

FRAILEY

Hi Kathleen, Mary was born 1834 - died 1912 and her father was Peter FRAILEY from her death certificate - it would appear that the Peter you mentioned (b1759-d1831) was perhaps her grandfather. Do you know if he had a son, Peter? Can you email directly? I would love to hear what you have on her family. Looking forward to hearing from you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
