FREDERICK FRALEY'S SON CHASED BY INDIANS
Colonel Arthur Campbell, wrote to Govenor Patrick Henry, on June 7, 1785 saying:
Since my last the Indians chased a son of Mr. Friley's on Clinch, and ran him until within site of his father's house.
Frederick Fraley settled in Upper Castlewood in 1769, being an emigrant from Rowan Co., N.C. The name was variantly spelled Friley, Fraley, and the German spelling of Froelich. Descendants today use the spelling of Fraley.
At the time his son was chased Frederick Fraley was living on the Moore's Fort property, which he had purchased from Captain John Snoddy, when Snoddy left the Clinch for Kentucky, around 1780. Just which of the several sons of Frederick Fraley was the one who was chased is Unknown. James, who was perhaps the oldest son was one of the most noted Indian Spy of the area, and one contemporary who served with him says he was chosen, "because of his dexterous use of the rifle."

In most past research a James H. Lee is here with a died young. This is an error. James H. is son of Giles and Susannah and did not die young. I am a descendent of this James H. Lee. The confusion is in the way they wrote the Bible entry. Since Giles and James (Father Son) were married to sisters they both had children named James, Rachel, Margaret, all born about the same time.

We parked the motorhome in Bascomb Slimps yard and took a walk up the hill to the cemetery.
Some of us were puffing by the time we reached the top. A very sturdy fence had been erected
around the cemetery with a good sturdy gate as we arrived at the top. Brush had been cut and
all the stones were visible. Many trees had been removed. One tree in the middle of the cemetery
remains to be removed. This looks so much different than the previous times I had been there.
We learned that at death you are placed in the cemetery by rank. The highest position given to
the head of the family. The highest position in the cemetery is a large stone that is unreadable.
It is thought this might be the father of James, William, John, Giles, and Nellie Eleanor. Some consideration given, as perhaps this could be Giles Lee mentioned in James Lee's bible who died
1817. Next level down was the resting-place of James Lee b. 1765 d. 1851. Several field stones are at
this level. In this cemetery could be the burial place of William Lee who died 1810 and several other
brothers. Close to James' stone were two field stones placed at the same level with similar type
of stones. With the knowledge of burial customs and a line of logic, the group concluded this was
probably the two wives of James: Sarah, and Rachel Hendricks Lee. This is where memorial markers
were placed in their memory. The stones are hand made by Mary F. Harvey a descendent of Sarah.
Another gate was placed on the West Side of the cemetery and as you are on the outside of that
gate you can look down to the bottom of the mountain and see the home of Tommy OSBORNE.
Looking to the west you can see where the OSBORNE cemetery is on the next hill over. South
of the OSBORNE cemetery is an old log cabin still standing where the James Lee place was. On up
the holler to the west and out of sight was the William Lea/Lee place. Directly behind Tommy
Osbornes house is an old log building: It is believed that this was the place where Giles and
Susannah Hendricks Lee made their home in 1820. Four of their children were born there. In the
1830's they pulled up and left for new land and a new home in Missouri, stopping for a short while
in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Other relatives where at this point. Giles and Susannah with there four
children went on into Osage-Gasconade Co. Missouri where an uncle of Giles and his family
were already settled. Perhaps in the same house where Giles and Susannah lived was the house
that Alexander and his family moved to from Lebanon. Grady is a descendent of Alexander Lee or
A.M. Lee as he signed himself on documents.
The cemetery is at a very high point and the view is beautiful from any point in the cemetery.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the
voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ
shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up
together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall
we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
KJV
Paul is referring to the Rapture or Second Coming of Jesus Christ. To
prepare the dead people in the Lee Family Cemetery, their loved ones buried
them facing east. That is to say their feet face east. That way when Jesus
reaches the horizon in Castlewood the buried Lee family member will rise and
meet Jesus in the air.
All of the people buried at the Lee Family in Castlewood were buried using
this pattern. The VA stones in the Memorial garden were not placed this way
to show our descendants that no one is actually buried there.Grady K. Lee
Looking to the North. Northwest, there is a gap in the mountains. A trail can be walked through
here about 3 miles to the Clinch River. All of James land drained into the Clinch River.
Looking directly to the South of the cemetery, over the next mountain was the home of John, brother
of James. This John was married to Mary Polly VanHook. Edwin Lee is a descendent of this brother.
After the death of Giles Lee 1817, John left with his family and went to Kentucky and on to
Missouri about 1830. All of John's land drained into the Copper Creek.

Notes for FREDERICK FRALEY:

1) CHLOE LEE, the widow of James Lee deceased presented in Court for probate a writing purporting to be the Last Will and testament of said dweceased, which is contested by MARTIN LEE, OLIVER H. PRICE and WILLIAM PORTER: and by consent, the contest about said will is continued till the 2nd day of the next term of Court (March 4, 1851)
2) MARCH 5, 1851, another hearing which declares the JAMES LEE was in such a state of mind that he was incapable of preparing a will and the court refused to establish it as his will, and also refused to admit such a record. The court declares that James Lee was not , and had not been in the right state of mind long before the will was written. Due to this the will was not allowed to be admitted for probate.
November 1, 1998-------Lee Family Cemetery, Russell Co. VA.
