Re: Family of Frederick Fraley

Frederick Fraley was one of the men sent on the Cherokee Expedition of August 1776 from Southwest VA (prob. Washington Co VA):

"In the History of Southwest Virginia, 1746-1786, by Lewis Preston Summers, it states that "Captain Thomas Madison was appointed Commissary and Paymaster for an expedition to be led by the guidance of Frederick Fraley (a private whose direction had to be followed by order of the governor.)" Frederick is listed as a private soldier in the Cherokee Expeditions in the records of Col. William Christensen in August 1776. In the Annals of Tazewell County Virginia, he is listed as a Revolutionary War soldier paid for services performed as a private in Col. Russell's Company and Col. Henry Smith's Company, at the Battle of King's Mountain. In his son James pension application, Frederick was listed as a "surgeon" who removed a bullet."
McDaniel Fraley

Does anyone know who McDaniel Fraley is? I know he was from Russell County, Virginia. I know he was in the 37th VA Infantry during the War Between the States. I know he married a woman named Louisa and they had Frances E., Joseph Benton, Thomas N., Florence B., William B., and Carrie A. Fraley. I know he died in December of 1879 in Russell County of Liver Disease, but I don't know who his parents are because I can't find him in the 1850 census.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely,
Keli Spiegel
keli97@comcast.net
boarders with Barbara (Fultz) Fraley in 1900 census

In the 1900 census, there were several boarders listed with Barbara (Fultz) Fraley, widow of Frederick Fraley Jr., with no relationship stated:

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hoggtown precinct, enumerated 15 June, lists on p. 11A as household #189/192:
Fraley, Barbrey, 78, b. Apr 1822, widowed, farmer; Dicy, dau, 54, b. 1846, single; Epperheart, French, boarder, 21, married 3/12; Jenney, boarder, 16, b. Apr 1884, married 3/12; Fraley, Isabell, boarder, 20, b. Feb 1880, single; Randall, Robinett, 68, b. Mar 1832, Va Va Va, married 5 years, teamster; Fraley, Josey, 1, b. Mar 1899. All except Robinett Randall born Ky Ky Ky.

Jenney's maiden name was also Fraley:

Rowan Co. marriage book 3, p. 448, records the marriage of French Epperheart, 21, born Rowan Co., father born Va, mother born Ky, residence Miner, to Jennie Fraley, age 15, born Rowan Co., father born Rowan Co., mother born Ky, on 13 Feb 1900 at Barb Fraley’s by Elder Samuel D. Nickell, witnesses Flemon Pelfrey & Charley Vancuran, bond surety by William Fraley. First marriage for both parties.

I would like to identify the parents of the above Jennie Fraley, Isabell Fraley, and Josey Fraley, and also of French Epperhart.

Are some of the Fraley girls daughters of Dicey Fraley? If so, why are they not listed as grandchildren of Barbara?

Here are some people of those names who they are NOT:

There was a Jennie Fraley born ca 1883 dau of Daniel Fraley and Isabell Springer, but she was still single and listed with her parents in 1900:

1900 census of Pine Grove precinct, Rowan Co., Ky, enumerated 12 June, lists as household #161:
Fraley, Daniel, 36, head; Isabelle, 23, wife, married 4 years, mother of 2 children, 1 living; Henry, 20, son; Luisia J., 19, daughter; Jennie, 17, daughter; Jacob, 14, son; Harvey, 12, son; John T., 10, son; Laura, 8, daughter; Beatrice, 2, daughter. All born Ky Ky Ky.

There was a Josie Fraley born Sep 1899, dau of James M. B. Fraley and Maria Hall, but she was listed with her parents:

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hoggtown precinct, enumerated 17 June, lists on p. 8B as family # 140:
Fraley, James, 42, b. 1858; Mariah, wife, 38, b. June 1861, married 21 years, mother of 11 children, all living; Manda, dau, 17, b. Mar 1883; Alorra, dau, 16, b. Mar 1884; Wilson, son, 14, b. Sep 1885; Rena, dau, 11, b. July 1888; Miligan, son, 9, b. Sep 1890; Ella, dau, 7, b. Mar 1893; Boone, son, 5, b. Aug 1894; Willie, son, 3, b. Oct 1896; Bryan, son, 2, b. Feb 1898; Josie, dau, 8/12, b. Sep 1899. All born Ky/Ky/Ky.

There was a French Epperhart b. ca Nov 1859, son of Henry Johnson Epperhart and Martha J. Stamper, and a French Epperhart born Jan 1892, son of James A. Epperhart and Elizabeth Brown, but the former was a generation too early and the latter a generation too young.

I cannot find this French Epperhart in the 1910 census. His wife Jennie Fraley apparently died before 1920 (or they were divorced), because in 1920 and 1930 he is listed in West Virginia with a wife named Elizabeth. Both French and Elizabeth are buried in Epperhart Cemetery in Rowan Co.

His gravestone has the dates 1879 - 1960, but he does not appear in the Kentucky death index. Nor does his wife Elizabeth, with whom he is buried. Most likely they both died in West Virginia and were returned to Rowan Co. for burial.

I cannot find any name/age match in the 1880 census. One possibility is that he is the same person as the Rector Epperhart listed as age 1, son of David Epperhart and Martha Ellen White. It may be, however, that the birthdate of March 1879 is incorrect, as are a great many birthdates in the 1900 census, and that he was really born after June 1880.

Re: DAR update

Hi Keli,
Can you confirm for sure the recorded will is actually in the 1st Law Order book and would you know the page number of the will please? I have tried repeatedly to get a copy from the courthouse, but nobody there seems to be able to produce it.

The data which shows on the Russell Co VA GenWeb is:
WILL OF FREDERICK FRALEY
Russell County, Virginia
Court Order Book 2, Pages 56 & 70
Executed Feb, Apr 1793

When I sent for this information shown above, the Russell County VA court clerk told me the actual will document was not recorded in that book on those pages.

Below is all you will find on those pages...just a brief mention that the will was recorded....but no actual will document is on record at the courthouse to their knowledge:

RUSSELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA LAW ORDER BOOK 2 (1792 - 1799)
P56 - Motion, administration is granted to Cloe Friley & James Friley on the estate of Frederick Friley, decd with the will annexed.
P57 - Commission awarded to Cloe Friley & James Friley, Adm of the estate of Frederick Friley, decd with will annexed to take depositions of John Walker in the ceeded territory and Edmund Smith in Lincoln Co., Ky.
P67 - Motion, Administration granted to James Friley & Cloe Friley, executor of estate of Frederick Friley, decd, will annexed. Bond: James Davison, Christopher Cooper, John Frazer
P67 - Ordered that John Smith, Samuel Porter, William Bolin & James McKinney appraise the estate of Frederick Friley, decd
P70 - Will of Frederick Friley, decd, depositions of John Walker & Edmund Smith, recorded
P115 - inventory & appraisement of estate of Frederick Friley, decd, recorded
------------------------------------------------------------

The actual physical location of this document is vital to know since so many of us need a photocopy of it for DAR. For many of us, this is the ONLY document that proves our ancestor was a child of Frederick. I think all Frederick's descendants should be able to know where they might find it, but sadly, whoever does know it's location will probably take the information to the grave with them. It's beyond frustrating!

Yes, Keli you did respond! My husband I and went to the JP Fraley Music Festival in KY recently .. that we learned about from you. JP (Jesse Presley) Fraley now suffers from Alzheimers, so we could not communicate, but he really enjoys listening to others playing at the festival in his honor. My husband, Buddy, has done quite a bit of research and found out a great deal about the Fraley's. JP and I do share a common ancester. After we left KY, we traveled to New Castle, PA and visited Greenwood cemetery where my g-grandfather (Rufus) and my g-grandmother (Mary Elizabeth) are buried. It was very special to me. Thanks for all your info. Pat Stanford

No, I have not heard of Jewish Froelichs. It is not unusual for both gentiles and Jews in Germany to share the same surname. As far as twins are concerned, that is interesting as I am NOT a descendant of Frederick and Chloe, but of the other Frederick (born 1741-42)and Elizabeth Bull. My Frederick was the son of Johann Daniel Froelich and Dorothea. BUT my line also has a history of an unusual number of twins. Perhaps a coincidence, perhaps not. Bob Engel

Hi Lorrie,
I was wondering if you had any success in getting the documents from DAR yet? I'm trying to prove Sarah Fraley-Donohoe was Frederick's daughter, and the only piece of paper I need is a photocopy of Frederick's will which lists Sarah as his daughter. If you were able to get a copy of the will, please let me know and I would be happy to pay for a copy of it.
Thanks,
Tara

Bernard Friley

Bernard Friley born in Ashland, KY 1898-1899, murdered in Ashland, KY 22 Jan 1934 by Henry Bond. Bernard was a s/o William Friley, b. ca. 1869 in KY, and Rosa Blandenship. William Friley and Rosa Blankenship were married in Boyd Co., KY 21 June 1897. I haven't been able to find William Friley after the 1900 Boyd Co., KY census. Rosa died in Boyd Co., KY 22 Nov 1900. Bernard was living with his Blankenship grandparents in the 1910 and 1920 census. Bernard married Emma Caines in Boyd Co., KY 12 Feb 1928. James William Day [stage name Jilson Setters]wrote and sang a ballad about the murder of Bernard Friley. Any info on the ancestry of William Friley will be appreciated.

I am looking for any information about a Charles R. Fraley who was born around 1849. He married Martha Jane Moore and had two sons Sylvester S. and Charles W. At some point he lived in Scott County, Virginia, but I do not know if that is where he was born. A marriage certificate for Sylvester indicates that is where Sylvester was born.
Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I sent you an email but thought that I would post here as well. I connect Martin Fraley and William from a transcribed will that I found on the Russell Co. Va. Geneweb site- I emailed you a copy of the transcription.

I know that Martin had a nephew who was also named Martin, so its possible that the Martin Fraley that I am looking for either fought for another regiment or didn't fight in the Civil War at all. Let me know if you have any other information that could help. There is little information on the 50th Va., outside the original enlistment records. I think shows Martin the grandson of William, not the son.

I was able to figure out the answer to my own question. Charles' father was Martin Fraley, census records mispelled it as Friley. According to reocrds I found on the Russell Co., VA Genweb site, Martin's wife Mary filed for his pension as a Civil War veteran. According to her application, he was killed at Gettysburg and served in the 50th Virginia Infantry. He apparently also had a nephew named Martin who died at Gettysburg as well and both may have fought in the same regiment. If anyone has any additional information on this it would be very much appreciated.

Martin's father was William Fraley, and William was one of Fredrick Fraley's sons.

Jewish Froelichs?

Hi,
I am a decendant of Frederick and Chloe Fraley (Froelich). I'm very curious about something. I have heard rumors my whole life that the original Froelichs were of Jewish-German ancestory. When I visited a museum in Prague about 9 years ago, I discovered the names of many, many Froelichs who had been killed during the Holocaust. Does anyone know whether Frederick Froelich's ancestors might have been Jewish and among these people?
Many thanks!

I just saw this message fours years after it was posted! I am a Frederick and Chloe Fraley descendant, and I'm also an identical twin. I have always heard from my father (Charles Fraley, Jr) that we have a lot of other twins in the family. Also, I have heard rumors through the years that the Froelichs were originally Jewish-German. When I was in Prague about 9 years ago, I discovered the names of many, many Froelichs who had been killed during the Holocaust. Has anyone else heard anything about Frederick Froelich's ancestors being Jewish?
Many thanks!

I just read these latest posts. I will send all of you with posts here these pics. I just need to find them all first, as my picture files have grown leaps and bounds.

I'll try to do that later today. Roy I loved your post! It is so exciting to learn about your ancestors. New Mexico is a beautiful state also; one of my very favorite. My daughter lived in Albuquerque for 3 years, but moved in 2005. I just loved to visit there and go up to Santa Fe.

I grew up near the original Fraley lands in Russell County. I was in Scott County, near the county line. My mother was from Russell and my father from Scott, but they lived only about 3 miles apart. Russell County is such a beautiful place. I hope you get to visit it some day. I go over that way from Kentucky, where I live, about every two months or so. Still own my daddy's land there, but it's very grown up now. My uncle John Fraley, who turns 83 this month, still lives there on his part of our Fraley farm. He makes handmade mandolins, but is not able to work on them much anymore. He's made around 80 since he retired from the Michigan auto industry and moved back to his homeplace. His mandolins are in the hands of many professional players and all sing high praises of their tone. They go by the Fraley brand.

I see I've written a short novel here. ....Carol

There is still some confusion here in what you have written. Martin Fraley killed at Gettysburg was the son of Andrew and Barbara Fraley. Andrew is one of William's sons. Martin Fraley is my great-great-grandfather. His son John is my great-grandfather. Martin, killed at Gettysburg, was married to Mary Polly Horne, who did file for a pension as a Civil War widow. She had seven children when he died.

There may be another Martin Fraley, but I don't find that in my databse. I do not have a Martin listed as one of William Fraley's sons, but that is not to say there was not one.

Andrew Fraley had 5 sons who fought in the Civil War. All survived to become old men, except Martin. I visited Mr. S. A. Fraley near Castlewood, VA recently. A wonderful man who still lives on the original Frederick Fraley lands. His grandfather Harvey Fraley, son of Andrew, fought in the Civil War. Frederick, William, Andrew, and his father Harvey are all buried on the original Fraley lands. That part of the farm is in other family's hands now though--not Fraley's.

My grandfather was Charles Kitchen Fraley and my father Charles Kermit Fraley. Charles Kermit died in 1980 and Charles Kitchen in 1956.

I'd love to communicate with you more, herd6494.
Passing of Lavelle Boyd

I recieved this this morning...

I’m sorry to send this mass email, but didn’t know any other way to let my mom’s friends know that LaVelle passed away last night. She passed peacefully with both daughters and her sister at her side. While she had been ill since summer, she had made great progress toward recovery until she returned to the hospital last saturday afternoon. Her body just couldn’t fight a massive infection, and she passed last night. We’re all in a bit of shock! Obituaries will be in the Nashville, Lawton, and Ft. Worth papers.
