Hi! Franco is a very common Jewish name. For many years I was convinced that my mother's family were of Jewish ancestry but the DNA results showed that she is Native American. Her parents were first cousins so they were both Franco's. Her maternal DNA (Haplogroup B) and her paternal DNA by way of her brother both showed Native American ancestry. I can send you the complete results if you wish.

Hi, I am a Franco by grandfather. Do you know if your Francos came from Cuba? Do you know what part of Cuba? Do you know when they came to the US? My grandfather was from Galicia, Spain, went to Cuba in 1920/1930's, to Holguin, married my grandmother, moved to Havana, had 13 children, then moved to US---children were all here when he arrived in 1970's. My grandfather had 2 brothers named Ramon and Manuel who came with him from Galicia to Cuba, plus some cousins, some of which I heard went to Argentina, after a short stay in Cuba. Anything ring a bell? Thanks, luv2bmami@yahoo.com

Speaking candidly, where the name is from depends on how far you go back and how your family tree winds around.

Franco has collectively been used as a corruption of the Francs (A germanic tribe living on the Rhine - most famous member being Charlemagne), a corruption of France (the country), as well as other names. Its also from an Old English word for javelin (franca). In Spain, Franco was given to freed slaves, and the Jewish people adopted the name from there.

It was found in the Domesday Book in 1086 and again in the 13th century.

Seeing as how Rome conquered England before the Domesday book was written, I've always assumed at the very beginning it was Italian and spread to Spain and England, and then to the rest of the world as colonialism was driven through history.

I am a Franco from PR...My mother's family is from Cidra-Cayey. I was amazed to see that the family is concentrated in those towns. I wonder, do you have any information between 1900 and 2000? I would be interested in that info.

Ok...well, I will admit that my connection to the Francos is quite distant. I do have some info if you are at all interested in Stanley's wife's family. Basically, Mina's uncle was married to my great great grandmother's neice. Confusing enough for you?? LOL Well, basically if there is any interest in Mina's family, I can give you some background on that but not too much on the Franco side unfortunately. I am always open to adding more people to my tree even if they are only remotely related. I like to see how all the families are connected...you find the most interesting connections. Sometimes families connecting multiple times in different areas. Probably because Trinidad is so small! :)

Hi, Uncle Stanley is my Grandfather Rodericks' brother. Grandpa passed about 15 years ago, in NJ.
I last saw Tara when she was three years old in Trinidad, at Auntie Mina's/Uncle Stanleys home.
My Uncle Bob's(Rod's son) step-daughter, Seana married Sean.We are definitely related!
I live in Northern California. My mother, Clare, is the only living child from Roderick & Agnes' marriage. She is 73, and lives in CT.
I am interested in The Trinidadian lineage, as this is mostly a mystery to us. my mother didn't know too much beyond, all the brothers and sisters.
You can reach me directly at: RubenLARAZA@aol.com .
Thanks,
Christina
I believe we may have some relatives in common.

My g.grandfather, John Franco was born in Trinidad in 1867. He was married to Clementine Pace and they had 10 children: Louis, William (my g.grandfather), Leanora, Louise, Caroline, Marie, Vera, Daisy, Agnes and John.

The family left Trinidad for Grenada where my g.grandfather was born in 1889. William immigrated to Canada where he met and married my grandmother. Their son still lives in Toronto.

I would be interested to hear from you and if we are connected.
