W.H.P. MacDonald, and being private, was attended only by sympathizing friends and neighbors. All were made sadder by the fact that the mother is herself an invalid. The report that the surviving son is also ill is a mistake, we are glad to say.

Re: Charles Franke and Mary Elizabeth Ronke

Katie,
Thanks for the info. It helps me to look in another direction.

I was glad to have helped you. Unfortunately, I don't know all that much about this family. I am related to them through Mary Ronke, my great grandaunt.

What I do know is this:
Mary was born in November of 1865 in Princeton, WI. Her parents were Andrew Ronke and Marianna Flemming (both came from Prussia but married in WI). She had 13 siblings. Most of the sisters went to Chicago and most of the brothers went to South Dakota. Mary and Charles (Carl) were married about 1890. I think Charles may have died before 1936 (Mrs. Mary Franke was mentioned in her brother's obit and not Mrs. Charles Franke).

A cousin had some old photos that we were trying to identify. Some of them were from Chicago studios, so we assume that they were of the sisters or their families.

Suzanne

Re: Charles Franke and Mary Elizabeth Ronke

Suzanne,

Charles (Carl) Franke is my half great grand uncle. I know that Barbara and Clifford Cozens were related to me (my grandparents used to visit them in Chicago). Your post solves the mystery for me how they are related.

Charles was born in Washington County Wisconsin in about 1864. He was on 1870 and 1880 census in the household of Gottlieb Franke, his father. Check those out on Ancestry.

In 1870 he is Carl age 6. His mother, Charlotte somebody, died before 1867, when Gottlieb remarried a younger Charlotte Waechter, a widow. The first Charlotte immigrated with Gottlieb and some older siblings in 1854. They were from Wintzingerode, Saxony, Prussia. Then it seems that in 1870, Gottlieb was again a widower. There is a 23 year old Charlotte on that census, but that is probably his oldest daughter, who also went by the name Mary or Maria.

In 1880, Carl is 16 and Gottlieb has new wife, Johanna Gedke, who he married in 1871. She had five more children with Gottlieb. (My great grandmother was one of them, Elizabeth Franke b. 1873 who married Henry Angermeyer who she met in Chicago).

I have been very interested in this family, and did not know who Carl married or about his children. I would love to see his marriage certificate to help sort out the multiple wives.

Gottlieb Franke is the son of Andreas Gottfried Franke and Charlotte (another Charlotte) Hohnstein, who also immigrated to Washington County Wisconsin from Wintzingerode, Germany.

There is a lot more. Hope this helps.

Katie

I believe your Lottie may be Charlotte Franke, who was b. Wisconsin about 1878 (could be 1877). She was age 2 on the 1880 census in Town of West Bend, Washington County Wisconsin. Her parents on that census were Gottlieb Franke, farmer and Johanna Franke, with siblings Carl 16, August 14, Julius 11, Mina 8, Elizabeth 7, Gottlieb 4, Charlotte 2.

That's all I have on Charlotte, but I have more on her siblings, and ancestors on the Franke side and Johanna (Hannah)Gedtke's side.

Would be most interested in what happened to Charlotte after she left Wisconsin. Elizabeth went to Chicago as a teenager to work as a maid, and there she met her husband, Henry Angermeyer. (those are my great grandparents). Charlotte's older half-brother, William Franke worked in a brewery in Chicago, and later became a brew master in Aurora and Sterling Illinois and in Auburn New York. Her brother August (Uncle Gus) also went to Chicago and raised his family there. My Dad remembers them and some of the other siblings, but he didn't remember Charlotte.

Who did your Lottie Lena marry, and where and when was she in Illinois and Indiana? If I am right, then she would my great grand aunt. Would love to know her story.

Katie Angermeyer

Carl Franke, b.abt 1827, wife Fredrika (Koehler), dau. Selma, of Milwaukee Co., WI

I have two photographs of this family, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. One photo is a copy of a group photo taken about 1900, of Alfred Meyer, Carl Franke “gr. grandfather”, Irma Meyer Mahr, Frederika Koehler Franke “great grandmother”, and Selma Franke Meyer “grandmother”. The other is an original studio picture of “Friederich and Selma Meyer”, taken in about 1910. Photo was taken in Milwaukee, WI and he looks about 60 and she about 50.

Carl and Fredrika Franke were parents of Selma Meyer, and I found them in the 1880 census for Oak Creek (Milwaukee Co.) WI, with their children. Charles A. Franke was age 53, Fredrika was age 49, with children Oscar, 25; Ernest, 18; Selma, 20; Herman, 14, and living with them was 80 yr. old John G. Franke.

I found Friedrich and Selma Meyer in the 1900 federal census and 1905 WI state census, living in Oak Creek (Milwaukee Co.) WI, as Fred and Selma. 1900 census shows Fred was born Oct 1849, and Selma in 1860. In 1905, however, in same location, he was listed as 52, and she as 45. In 1900, their children were Ella, born Sep 1884, Dornetta/Arnetta, born Sep 1886, and Alfred, born Sep 1887.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Carl Franke or Fredrika Koehler Franke or their daughter Selma Franke Meyer.

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Ernst Franke and Marie Baumann”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Milwaukee, WI in about 1898-1900, and each of them looks to be in their 30s. Public Member Tree in Ancestry shows that they were married 18 Mar 1899, so this might have even been a wedding photo, although there is no formal gown.

In the 1900-1930 censuses for Oak Creek (Milwaukee Co.) WI, I found Ernst F. Franke and wife Marie M. Public Member Tree shows that Ernst was born 31 Jul 1862 Milwaukee and died Oak Creek, WI. Marie was born Jan 1868. In the 1880 census for Madison (Dane Co.) WI, I found Marie M. Baumann with her parents Edward L. and Carolina.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Ernst F. or Marie M.
Hi George!
Sorry, I have no idea who Adolph Frank's parents were. He seems to have dropped the e in Franke when he got to America in 1903. He and Augusta had 7 children - Mary (by Augusta's 1st marriage), Elizabeth (my grandmother), Frieda (Pieske), Paul Otto ( who died in 1931 in Ca.), Albert, Anne (Hampel-Krbec) and the youngest I think is August. I haven't been able to find a thing on him, not even sure of his name. They all came over from Germany. I've had a very difficult time finding any info on them and most of the relatives have passed on.
Hope we can latch on to something here.
Joyce

As I said, He was also born in 1857 in Berlin, Germany (same year as Augusta) but with Adolph birth date in 1861 they may be related. George also lived in Chicago (1910 census), Buy chance do you have any information on Adolph Mother or Father? Hope that we related, I have been looking for a long time –hope to talk to you later-George

Immigrated to America in 1903 w/7 or 8 children. Lived in Chicago, Il. entire time to my knowlege. Adolph died in 1921, Augusta died in about 1922. Could George and Adolph possibly be related?
Hoping to hear from you,
Joyce

Re: Andreas Gottfried Franke of Winzingerode

Hi,

Good to hear from someone researching this family. I only just recently found out about Pearl, when I found Peter in Milwaukee in 1930 census.

Peter Franke, 47, S(ingle) was overwritten with M(arried) (Married at age 42), boarder, b. Wisconsin, parents b. Germany, occupation scaler stock yards, with Pearl Franke, 4 yrs 6 mos, boarder. Both Peter and Pearl (his daughter?) in household of Laura Gath, 37, widow, rents $30, b. Wisconsin, parents b. Wisconsin. Others in household: Hulda Gath 18 daughter b. Wisconsin; Paul Gath 12 son b. Wisconsin; Gertrude Gath 12 daughter b. Wisconsin; Arnold Gath 8 son b. Wisconsin. There was one other male boarder, a widower. This census suggests that Peter's wife was still alive. Sounds like they weren't sure what to tell the census taker. Laura Gath is a possible suspect for the mother of Pearl.

[I am pretty sure this the same Peter Franke as the one from Washington Co, Wisconsin. Age, birth place, birth place of parents match, and he does not show up in Washington Co. that year.]

I have him born in Nov. 1882 (per 1900 census). My father knew him as a single man and had no knowledge of a child. Seems that he would have married or had a relationship of some sort in about 1924 probably in Milwaukee, and who knows what happened to her. Milwaukee County should be checked for Franke marriages, births and deaths 1920- 1930. Maybe you have already looked there.

From 1900 census, he was in Schleisingerville (Slinger), Washington Co. WI age 17, with his mother Hannah. He was a day laborer.

1910, he was in Milwaukee, age 27, again in Hannah Franke's household. He was a teamster for a box factory.

1920, he was in Polk Twp, Washington Co. with his mother, he was single and a store keeper.

Hanna died in April 1920, just after being counted on the census. Peter signed her death certificate. It appears he was her caregiver while she was older and ill. She had cancer of the uterus. Peter was the youngest child and lived with his mother until she died.

Seems that he could have gone to Milwaukee and found a woman in the years after his mother's death.

I don't have Peter's death date either. He isn't on the Social Security Death Index.

I would be most curious to find out more about Pearl. What can you tell me about her? Does she have descendents? Are there any pictures?

I descend through Peter Franke's sister, Elizabeth Franke Angermeyer. I can help you more with Gottlieb and Hannah and the Washington Co. Franke's.

Hope this gives you a clue.

Katie Angermeyer

Andreas Gottfried Franke of Winzingerode

I have a great great grandfather named Gottlieb Franke (1820-1891) who immigrated to Washington Co. Wisconsin in 1853 with his family from Prussia . His second (or possibly third) wife was Johanna (Hanna) Getke (Jedke), who he married in Wisconsin. The marriage certificate says his parents are Gottfried Franke and Katherine Hohesteten and that he was born in Winzingerode.

Gottlieb and Hanna Franke lived in Polk Township in Washington County.

I am trying to find out more about the Andreas Gottfried Franke (1791-18630, wife Charlotte Hornstein. He is of the right age to be the Gottfried father of Gottlieb, if you are following what I am saying. The Winzingerode origin and settling in Washington Co. Wisconsin all are good circumstantial evidence.

I know that Duane Koch and others have researched this family. Would like to know more to prove or disprove that Andreas Gottfried Franke- Charlotte Hornstein is the same as Gottfried Franke- Katherine Hohesteten.

Hi Terry
Alice ARMSTRONG, M 1663, William FRANKE. Unfortunately, I have no more on him or his ancestors. Her ancestors have some tenuous link to King William I, "the Conqueror" who appears to be my 29xG Grandfather. And other connections with King Henry I mean that I'm related to our current Queen Elisabeth.
I can also trace her ancestors back a further 10 generations.
There may also be a connection to Rig Sverige, born 340 AD in Sweden.
Between them, they have 89 descendants, including myself, on my tree.

So how relate to William FRANKE?

Emilie Kassing Sudhop is my great grandmother. I visited St Michaels two weeks ago to see her grave. Your gggrandparents are buried atop my gggrandfather, Louis Sudhop, who died in 1877. Emilie remarried Edward Franke and had two children with her second husband. Her body was removed from the Kassing family plot when her second husband died in 1922. I understand that according to census records, the Halls lived with the Kassing family in Astoria Long Island and I believe they may have been somehow related to the Kassings, but how, I dont know.

Hi there. Just had a quick look at the 1900 census - Richard Franke is living with Edward & Emelia in Buffalo Ward 18, Erie County, New York. There are no other children with Edward & Emelia. Edward born Sept 1855 in Germany, married 21 years, occupation Night Watchman, immigrated 1889. Emelia born July 1857 in Germany, married 21 years, had 3 children, 2 living; immigrated 1889. Richard born Aug 1879 in Germany, single, occupation Student, immigrated 1889. Address looks like 23 Wende.

I expect they can be found in other other census records as well. Hope this helps.

Charles Franke/Anna Golen

I am interested in any information anyone might have about a Charles Franke (b. Abt 1865) in MI. He lived in the Detroit area. I believe his parents were Adolph & Wilhelmina Franke. His wife was Anna Golen (Gaulen) also born in MI. They had a daughter named Anna in 1891. Anna is later listed in census records as living with her grandmother Wilhelmina. I am curious if anyone knows what might have happened to Charles, Anna and even Adolph, as they disappear from any records in the year(s) 1892/1893. Was there any accidents/epidemics in Detroit at that time?

I think I found Anna's family in Detroit, MI in the 1800's and early 1900's. I believe her parents were a Charles and Anna Franke. She was listed as living with her grandparents though on the 1900 and 1910 census for Detroit. They were Adolph and Wilhemina Franke. Does anyone know if any of this info is right and if so what happened to Charles F. Franke and his wife Anna?

Anna Franke b. 1891 in Michigan

I am looking for information on an Anna (Annastasia maybe) Franke that was born in Michigan and married a Murven L. Lohr in 1912. They lived in Johnstown, PA for the 1920 census. I tracked Anna to Elyria, OH in 1932 and I can't find anything on her after that. I know she divorced Murven so she might have re-married. Does anyone have any info on either Anna Franke or Murven Lohr? Thank you!

Re: Andreas Gottfried Franke of Winzingerode

I'm also researching Franke's in Wisconsin.

I have come back to Gottlieb Franke and Hanna each time I try to find information on Peter Franke born November 1882, and Pearl Franke born in Wisconsin in September 1926. I find no birth or death information on Peter. Pearl's death was February 1961 in Waushara County.

I am also having no luck finding information on a wife of Peter and mother of Pearl.

Have you come across any of this information? We know nothing of Pearls family and would like to find anything to get on the right track.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to get in touch with you.
I have information about Pearl's children. I am married to her youngest son.
I am so happy to have found someone that may be able to fill in some of the gaps.
I have a marriage license for Pearl, but still can't locate a mother by the name listed on the license. Cannot locate a birth certificate for her as of yet.
I do have some pictures. Very few, but there are some.
Thanks for the reply. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Jennifer Johnson
