You can email me at macatkins@gmail.com if you're interested in corresponding further.

Somehow I became anonymous but my Grandmother was a sister to Charles Frankenfield. Her name was Clara Frankenfield Hamilton and she lived in Bordentown just about all of her life except for the last 3 yrs of her life. My Grandmother always wondered what happened to Edna? know she was in Masonic home. Is she still alive? She loved her Aunt Clara.
I am trying to find who his parents are. The last bit of info I can find shows that He lived with the Keller Family @ age 8 in Haycock, Buck County, PA as a farmhand.
As a descendant of what we call the "westward Frankenfield movement," I might be able to shed some additional light on this.. lol

My grandfather's parents' married in KS, but had grown up together in Lycoming & Tioga Co. area. My grandparents grew up next door to each otherin Kansas. He went to work for the railroad.. She went to college. He realized after several years that his heart belonged to her.. and went back to claim his school teacher bride.

Suffice it to say.. it appears that in those days.. our family, like many others, hung with and married the neighborhood kids.

My guess, from reading your tale is that Mary is Lydia's mother. I imagine that her first husband died.. or he might have been abusive, causing her to divorce him.

Check the court documents in Northampton County for that time period.

I read about a case in TN where the husband was a abusive *NOT RELATED TO A FRANKENFIELD HERE*, and the wife, because women had no rights, had to get the neighbors to attest to the brutality. The judge granted her the divorce, because her husband treated his horse better than his wife and children. You might check the papers, too. A divorce in those days was FRONT PAGE NEWS!!

There is a book that has great family history on our family. It's entitled, "Frankenfield Kin and Family Data" by Alfreda Patton Davidson. Alfreda is a professional genealogist and did a GREAT job. She collected data and information from Frankenfield descendants all across the country. I contributed the info. for our branch.

You might check with Amazon.com and see if you can get it there or try the family website. The book is well worth the price.

Happy Hunting..

Re: FRANKENFIELD mystery - Northampton County, PA

I don't have a precise answer to your query but did some digging just for fun. I have been looking at another branch of the Frankenfield family so your message caught my eye.

There were a lot of Frankenfields in Northampton County, esp. in Forks and Moore Township. The people I'm seeking were mostly in Moore Township, and I'm also trying to find a census or vital records connection to a Lilly or Lilli family, as they were godparents to a Frankenfield baby in 1836.

I suspect the reformulated families you're looking at (Frankenfield, Breidinger, Metz) resulted from the death of a spouse, because neither divorce nor desertion were common, especially in this conservative (Amish, Reformed, Lutheran) part of the state. Unfortunately, spouses did die frequently, esp. young mothers during or related to childbirth.

It was also common for children to be "farmed out" as laborers or mother's helpers. This happened in my family where a 13-year-old was sent to live with cousins who had three small children and the mother was in poor health. It's possible that Mary Frankenfeld was a widowed grandmother who needed help or wanted company in her household.

Re the Hahns: It's very likely that the Hahns and Frankenfields were related by marriage, e.g. Lydia may have had a sister who married a Hahn, or perhaps it was a generation back. Unfortunately we can't tell much about women from census records prior to 1850, as women and children weren't listed by name or age. However, you might be able to do some trial-and-error searching in later records for other Hahn and Frankenfield families to see who is living near whom. Maybe a pattern will emerge. People didn't move around a lot. However, some church-related groups did break off and move to other states, e.g. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, so if that were a possibility those states should be checked as well.

In 1850 Jonathan and Maria Hahn were in their 20s, and the children included Sidney as you mentioned, but also Sabina Fritz (12). In the 1850 census record you cite showing Peter Metz and Lydia Breidinger, note that two doors away live Stephen Hahn and his family.

Then in the 1860 census for Plainfield, page 2, you will find: Stephen (28) and Sabina (20) Hahn, with Thomas (12) and Edward (6/12) Hahn, and Elizabeth Fustenhaden (? can't quite read it), age 11. (Except for the 2-yr discrepancy in her age, I bet this could be the same Sabina.) Next door are George & Sarah Hahn and children, and next door to them are Jonathan (36) and Angelica (34) Hahn with their children Peter (8), Clarissa (5), Ellen (3), and William (7/12), and Joseph Bridinger (18).

In 1870 Jonathon (note spelling) Hahn (45) and Maria (43) have children Peter (18), William (10), Samuel (7), Erasmus (4), and Anna (5/12). It's possible Clarissa was married by then, or that she & Ellen were mother's helpers, or died.

In 1880 Jonathan (55) and Maria A (52) had William (20), Samuel (17), Erasmus (14), and Anna (11), and Thomas ("brother), age 61.

Given that Jonathan's spouse went from Maria to Angelica and back to Maria, I suspect it's the same spouse; perhaps her name was Maria Angelica and she used Angelica informally. It's very common for names to be misspelled, changed, or shortened. I had great aunts Mary Katharine and Ella Louise, who I knew as Katharine and Louise. Abbiannah became Abby Anna. Heinz became Henry.

In 1900 Clarissa, married to George Batt, with Thomas Hahn in their house (still Plainfield).

In 1900, no sign of Jonathan or Maria in Northampton County; possibly dead by then.

And so on! It gets pretty thick. You've probably done a lot of this work already, but since I was interested in Frankenfields I wanted to see if this could be helpful.
FRANKENFIELD mystery - Northampton County, PA

I have a bit of a mystery on my hands. Lydia Frankenfield (b. Apr 19, 1811) married Michael Breidinger. They had the following children: Elizabeth (b. Mar 26, 1833), Leonard (b. Jan 22, 1836), Sidney (b. Jan 8, 1839) and Joseph (b. Dec 28, 1841). Two years after Joseph's birth (in 1843) Lydia Frankenfield gets remarried to Peter Metz.

In the 1850 census for Plainfield Township, Northampton County, Lydia and Peter Metz are living together with the following children: Leonard Breidinger (b. 1836), Lucinda Metz (b. 1836), David Metz (b. 1842) and Reuben Metz (b. 1846). On the surface it appears a widow and widower remarry, bringing their children together into their new relationship...

However, Lydia only brought 14-year-old Leonard with her. According to the same census, Sidney Breidinger (now 12 years old) was living in the home of Jonathan and Maria Ann Hahn. Little Joseph Breidinger (now 8 years old) was living alone with 67-year-old Mary Frankenfield. (I can only assume Mary Frankenfield was a relative of Lydia). I was wondering if anyone researching any of these surnames in Northampton County knows the details surrounding the break-up of this family. Did Lydia's first husband die, or was there divorce/desertion? How is Mary Frankenfield related to Lydia? Who are the Hahn family, and how did they end up with one of the Breidinger children?

Hello again,
We may have gotten lucky!
Spoke with a fellow from Oliver H. Bair Funeral Home in Havertown, PA and he said the records from Bair and Frankenfield, which was a part of Bair, were donated to the Historical Society of Philadelphia.
Went to the web site and found them!
Phoned the society and had to leave a message. I asked how to go about accessing the records from Ohio. They are to return my call within two days.
Here's hoping. Will let you know what happens, but if you are close to Philly, you could go there.
Happy hunting,
Marilou

Raymond married Rebekah, Helen married Frank VanArsdale and Clara married Harry Hamilton...Edna (Charlie's daughter) was burned as a little child.
S. P. Frankenfield, Funeral Director

Trying to locate the funeral home that took care of my gr-grandfather (Morton Stanley Adams) in May of 1929. His obit said the funeral director was S. P.Frankenfield. This funeral home was probably in Delaware or Philadelphia County, PA. My gr-grandfathers viewing was held in Clifton Heights, Delaware Co., PA. The funeral home made arrangements to move him to Whitinville, MA for burial. My gr-grandfather's death was not recorded in either county according to PA & MA VR's. I'd like to find any records that the funeral home may have kept. Any information is appreciated.

Best Regards,

Myra Adams Chiles

Hi Edgar,

Just saw your post from years ago saying you're one of the last of Simon and Eve's descendants. Let me reassure you, you are NOT one of the last of Simon and Eve's descendants left. We number in the hundreds! Check out Alfreda's book!

In the generation from my grandfather, Norman Henry "Red" Frankenfield, son of Wesley Daniel, grandson of Daniel, a Civil War Union Veteran from Bucks County, there are 64 that I KNOW of.

Simon and Eve's legacy lives on!

Cindy in Oklahoma
