Thank you for the response to my posting.

I'm hoping these message boards bring me the little treasures (obits, photos, stories, artifacts, etc.) about the men who served in the 208th. I've about exhausted the internet material.

Thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net
Some general information on the unit at

http://www.pacivilwar.com/regiment/208th.html

That page contains hyperlinks to other sites including Bates Regimental History and Company Rosters. That link opens a new window, where you can read a page at a time. The unit history is brief, starting on page 691. Page forward to 694 for the start of the roster. Isaac and Daniel Frantz are listed on page 695.

Another link to the selected letters of Col. John S. McCalmont, available online from Penn State, are of interest too:

http://collection1.libraries.psu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOR...

The website is very slow in downloading, even over a high-speed connection. I wouldn't attempt with dial-up.

I glanced through the front matter, and it states that the 208th was created from the depleted 142nd, so there may be more information looking at that unit's rosters.

Glanced at the Colonel's letters - they look like very interesting reading as well.

Mary Jean ~

Thank you for your kindness in checking for me - I truly appreciate it. The FRANTZ mailing list told me that my NY FRANTZs aren't in any of their lines, which are fairly well established.

Another possibility is MAYBE, JUST MAYBE the NY FRANTZs descend from the widowed Johannes FRANCK / FRANTZ who came from the Palatines in 1710 with several children. He married widow Magdalene [surname unknown] STREIT ~ 1712 after he arrived.

However, it's only a vague possibility at the moment since there's quite a gap between Johannes and my G4GF Joseph.

There were probably other FRANTZs, too, who came between 1710 & 1800 when Joseph got married - maybe even Joseph himself.

Chipping away in extremely slow motion....

I have checked my data base but I regret to tell you I have nothing that will help you.
My Frantz family and those I've traced were all in PA in the beginning. Three brothers came from either Germany or Switzerland in the early 1700's. Some moved to Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan and even Washington State, Oklahoma and California.
I'm sure there may have been some who moved to New York too but I have nothing on them.
Coincidently, I have a cousin whose daughter is married to a Frantz. Her parents said their daughter's husband's family same from New York. I've been unable to link this family to mine.
Good luck in your search!
I'll let you know if I do find a link.
Mary Jean

Dear Mary Jean,

I'm glad you are able to help Betsy with her query.

I was wonering, though, in your FRANTZ-info collecting if you came across any NY FRANTZs?

I can trace my Ulster County, NY, FRANTZs back to my G4GPs who married in the RDC in Shawangunk on 11 Feb 1800 (as Joseph FRANS & Ruth TRAP), probably living in the T/Shawangunk or nearby T/Wawarsing, Ulster, NY.

Joseph was born ~ 1779 & Ruth was born ~ 1780, but I don't know where. And if not in the T/Wawarsing, then I don't know where either of them came from.

She died in 1843; he died in 1856. Both are buried in the Old Ellenville Cemetery, Ulster, NY.

I know this is a stab in the dark, but I try to follow up on possible leads.

Thank SO MUCH you for your time!

[Other forms of spelling for FRANTZ are: FRANS, FRANZ, FRANTS, FRANCE, FRANSE, FRENTS, FRANCIS, FRANTSYE, and my favorite, FRANCI.]

Betsy,

Contact me. I have some information on this family. They are NOT my relatives but with the numbers of Frantz families living in Pennsylvania, I decided it would be better to search all of them. I have one question.
According to the 'Palatine Families to New York' books, Johan Franck / Frantz came to NY as a widower with several children and married Magdalena _?_ Strait, widow, in the West Camp RDC (Ulster County, NY) in 1711. (Off the top of my head.)

Do you know with any assurance whether they stayed in the Hudson Valley, moved to the Mohawk Valley, or migrated into PA? Also, do you know if they had any children of their own? Did any of their sons, surnamed Frantz, Franck, France, Frants, Franz, Franse, whatever, go on to have any children? I believe Magdalena's Streit / Straight children did.

I get as far back as my possible G4GF, born 1785 in ?, married 1800 in T/Shawnagunk to Ruth Trap. I went to the Ulster Genealogical Society on Sunday and they had less than I did about the Frantzs, etc. But it was a madhouse there, so that might be the reason I couldn't get more info.

Responders from the Frantz mailing list tell me my Frantzs don't come FROM PA.

The woman who's been the long-time overseer of the UCGS hadn't heard of Frantzdale before and wants me to bring the little I can find on it (T/Wawarsing, Ulster, NY from at least 1837 to 1850/1 - then name changed to Homowack then to the current Spring Glen).

Any info you may have tripped over regarding these folks will be happily received. If not, then, oh well!

There's also a mailing list for the Brethern.

I descend from Michael Frantz the first but I don't a whole lot if anyone can help me piece the puzzle together I would greatly appreciate it. I have this e-mail that I will attach at the bottom that supposedly come from a cousin John Brewer and I have emailed him many times with no response.

Esta Frantz m. Sarah Catherine Long (sorry I don't have dates but I do know they came from PA then spread to Ohio and Indiana.) they had a son (I suppose more than one child) Rollen L. Frantz m. LeAnna Rose Hoskins they had my grandmother Verna Rose Frantz b May 31, 1925 in Gary, Indiana d.February 04, 2006 in Tomball, Texas. Verna m. Arnold Theodore Kehoe.

Here is the email I found.

*Michael Frantz I and the fact he is credited with founding the GB Church, there was some discussion about 'when'.
*So, while in NM today I went to the library to recheck my information.
*In 1723 Peter Becker established the Brethren Church in America.
*Near the same time, Conrad Beissel founded his Brethren Church in the same area of Pennsylvania.
*Michael Frantz I landed in Philadelphia on the Molly on 30 September 1727 and settled in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania - or Penns Woods - on the Coalico Creek.
* Balzer Frantz (third brother) arrived on the Adventure October 2, 1727.
*Christian Frantz I, older brother of Michael I, arrived on the Samuel August 11, 1732.
*On September 29, 1734,Elder Peter Becker established the Conestoga Congregation of the Church of the Brethren. Michael was baptized and chosen to lead the Conestoga Congregation.
*On that same day there was a large meeting of both factions of the Brethren (Beissel's and Conestoga) at the 'Old Frantz Farm'. Both leaders presented their beliefs and the reasons for them. There still was friction.
*Michael called all into the runway of the barn where he had placed a fence rail down the middle. He said he was following Elder Becker and the Conestoga and asked all who beleived as he did to step to the right of the rail while all who wished to follow Beissel should step to the left.
*The Conestoga Congregation flourished and spread into Ohio and Indiana and points west. Michael I was ordained Elder in 1735.
*The Beissel followers eventually dispersed.
Sadly, from what can be determined, Christian followed into the Conestoga Congreagation while Balser followed Beissel. To this day, descendants of Balser - who live in the Rossville and West Lafayette are - know only there was a split and Balser's descendants were forever split from their brothers.
*The youngest brother Johannes - John or Hannes - arrived on the Berth Amboy October 19, 1836. He was killed in the Indian Wars in 1742.
* I've also discovered that earliest records of a Frantz in America are Johan and Magdalena in 1709!

Any help is appreciated.

thanks
God Bless,
Candice

Anyway, I descend on my grandmother's side Frantz. Not sure how all this fits is but was told this e-mail depicts my lineage. Source: John Brewer (Frantz family record-Verna Frantz Kehoe Ancestors)

If you could possibly help I would be very greatful.

Thanks,
God Bless,
Candice

I knew F. Bernard Frantz and some of his children. He was married to Ada V. Miller, and they dwelt at Waynesboro, Franklin county, Pa. At last information, their daughter Miriam was still living somewhere in Ohio. On another post I just answered I misnamed one of their many children, Earl, as "Eugene." And I forgot Richard. I remember Miss Mabel Frantz best. F. Bernard lived directly across the street from my family when I was a child. His sister Mrs. John Plank lived about a block and a half west of us. His daughter Mrs. George Heckman (Gertrude) lived about the same distance to the east of us, and Miss Mable Frantz, a nurse, lived around the corner. If you wish further info, please email me at tadorsett@comcast.net.

I knew F. Bernard Frantz and his children Gertrude, Mabel, Miriam, and Eugene. I remember Miss Mabel the best. He lived across the street from my family when I was a child. I also remember his sister Mrs. John Plank, who lived down the street about a block and a half. They had another sister married to Lorin Treichler, who I believe settled in NJ. I think they had several brothers as well. Ada V. Miller had a sister Gertrude married to Barton Hauptman, and they had several children who dwelt here as well. These all were large families. I believe Mr. Frantz had 11 or 13 children altogether: Gertrude, Franklin, Mabel, Martha, Miriam, Frank (not same as Franklin), Ada, Eugenia, and Eugene, among others. Miriam was still living at last notice. She lives somewhere in Ohio, aged about 92.
Todd Andrew Dorsett,
Waynesboro, Pa.

Our William Harrison Frantz was born in Pennsylvania, Dec. 1888.. Lived in Bluefield WV. He lived in Ironton, OH in 1942. I haven't been able to pinpoint a lot of the years. He died from a self inflicted gunshot wound in Ohio in Sept.1954. My grandfather was his brother. In fact, Roland Frantz signed William's death certificate.

Isaac Frantz, Clearfield County

Just checking in again to see if there is an new information on my ancestor Isaac Frantz. According to his death certificate, he was born 12 Jun 1818 in Nothumberland County, PA, and parents were born in Centre. I am wondering if he could be from the Frantzes that lived in Miles or Halfmoon townships? Centre was not a county until 1800, and likely Isaac's parents were born prior to 1800. Therefore the part of Centre County they lived in would have then been part of Northumberland, which pinpoints the areas of Miles and Halfmoon.

Chances are great, then, that my Frantzes came from there if the death cert. info is correct. Anyone out there know of which Frantz family lived there? I did find a Jacob Frantz in Halfmoon in 1830 census, had 1 son bet. the ages of 10-15, one 15-20, one 20-30, Jaco was 40-50, 4 daughters 15-20, and wife 40-50. I am inclined to think this may be my family.

My Isaac settled in Brady Township, Clearfield Co., PA and died 7 Oct 1910. He was a farmer, married to an Elizabeth.
10 children of whom I do have info on: daughter Angeline, 1842, Susannah Margaret, 1845, John, 1850, Rebecca, Araminta, William Bigler, Jeremiah, Jacob, Carolina, and Reuben.

Any input is appreciated!
Wow, I am amazed with this information. I will definitely tell my mother tomorrow about this tomorrow. I can't believe that after all these years, someone knew who I was talking about. And not only that, but actually knew them. I know in talking with my mother, she had a brother named Richard(which you named). I'm not sure what happened to him. My mom either told me that he was sent off to an institution and/or died as a child. Do you know about him? My grandmother(Martha) ended up having 4 children...Julian, Richard, Michael, and my mom Brenda. Thanks again for responding. Hope you have a great night. Kyah

Rhonda,

My 2x Grgrm, was Margaret FRANTZ, b. 1823, PA; dau. of Isaac Frantz. Not 100% certain of her county of birth, but thought to be either Westmoreland or Armstrong Co. First marriage might have been to an ANDRUS; second marriage definitely to Richard WILMOT, 1843, Armstrong Co., PA.

Might you have a Margaret anywhere in your ancestry?

Thank you.

Marybeth C,
acmbjc@aol.com

Greetings:

I know it's been over a year since your post but I was wondering if you still had copies or scans of those pictures. Franz Frantz and Mary Specht were my grand uncle and aunt. I have been trying to gather as many pictures as I can but they are hard to come by.

Thanks

Richard Frantz (rwfrantz@gmail.com)
