obit fyi: Gretchen Dorothy (Poulson) Franz. 1913-2009

PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS POSTED FOR REFERENCE ONLY. I AM NOT RELATED TO, NOR AM I RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY, I’VE ONLY DONE A COPY AND PASTE FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER FYI.

THIS INFO HAS BEEN POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE EDITOR OF THE COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD.

Gretchen Dorothy (Poulson) Franz
Posted: Monday, Jan 12, 2009 - 04:05:48 pm PST
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE. WASHINGTON.

Gretchen Dorothy (Poulson) Franz passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 2008, in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Gretchen was born in Helena, Mont., on Sept. 10, 1913. She moved to California at the age of 17, where she attended secretarial school. Her secretarial and administrative skills led to a wide variety of jobs in government and the private sector. In the 1960s, Gretchen moved to the Palm Springs area where she worked for the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce and served as a legislative assistant to numerous Republican state senators, assemblymen and members of Congress from the Palm Springs area.

Gretchen was well known in the community for her volunteer and political activities. She was affiliated with the California Women for Agriculture since its inception, was a member of the Coachella Valley Association of Governments and the Valley Players Guild as well as many other non-profit organizations. She served on the local Republican State Central Committee and the State Republican Central Committee for over 25 years. She was a member of the California Republican Party, the Riverside County Republican Party, the Palm Springs Republican Assembly, the Desert Republican Assembly and Ranch Mirage Republican Women’s Federated. In April 1983, the California Legislature recognized her with special honors and highest commendations.

Gretchen loved to entertain and was well known for her Pu Pu (Hawaiian hors d’oeuvre) parties. She also delighted in her collection of elephants – all shapes and varieties that she purchased and was given by friends over the years. One of her greatest passions was reading, and well into her nineties, she would quote from memory poems by Longfellow and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as sing little ditties she remembered from her childhood.

Gretchen retired in 1984 at the age of 71 to marry long-time friend, Walter Franz of Palm Desert and Moses Lake. She and Walter took a year-long honeymoon to travel the world and spend time at their beloved home in Maui. During their years together, in addition to their Maui home, they built a home on Moses Lake where they enjoyed entertaining and continued their involvement in the Republican Party. Throughout their marriage, they traveled extensively and won numerous prizes for their ballroom dancing skills. After Walter’s passing in November 1998, Gretchen returned to California and lived for a number of years at the Fountains of Carlotta in Palm Desert. In 2008, she moved to University Village in Thousand Oaks to be near family.

Gretchen is survived by her daughter Adrianne (William) Knox of Lansing, Mich.; her son Ronald J. (Susan) Poulson of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

At Gretchen’s request, there will be no service. Her ashes will be scattered near her Maui home. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Alzheimer Association, California Central Coast Chapter, 1339 Del Norte Road, Camarillo, CA 93010.

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 753.

City of La Crosse

AUGUST FRANZ, saloon and restaurant keeper; was born in Prussia in 1840. He lost his father in childhood, and when 13 years of age, his mother started for America, with her family of seven children; she, with one son and one daughter, died on the passage, and August, with three brothers and one sister, made their way to Wisconsin, and settled at Black River Falls. In April, 1861, he enlisted in Co. K, 5th W. V. I., and went out as a private, and was in the service till June, 1865; he was wounded five times during his term of service, four times at Cold Harbor and once at Sailor's Creek, April 6, 1865, by a ball passing through his body, striking his right breast and coming out near the spine; he received a captain's commission, dated April 2, 1865, for gallantry displayed at the charge on the works at Petersburg, Va., and at the battle of Sailor's Creek, April 6, 1865, he being the first man to plant our colors on the rebel works; when mustered out he belonged to Co. A, that company having been consolidated with Co. K and one or two others. Since the war, he has been running as pilot on the Mississippi River in summer, and spending his winters in the South, till the last three years, has been in his present business.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information.
Heinrich Franz

Looking for any info about the children of Heinrich (Henry ) Franz; married to Susanna Girardin. Both born in Germany, and emigrated to America through Philadelphia. They had one daughter, Schalotta (called Charlotte) Juliana. I am looking to find records on any siblings she may have had. I believe she was adopted Native American girl originally named Juliana by the Moravians who baptised her. She may have been the daughter of Delaware Indian Abraham, Indian name ( SHEBOSH ).

Ruth Franz, b. 1902, daughter of Max/Louise, lived Milwaukee, WI

I have an original snapshot photograph of “Irma Kaiser, Ruth Franz and Tillie Kuehne”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Milwaukee, WI in about 1930 and each lady looks to be about mid 20s. They are standing in front of a building which says “Pabst Brewing”.

I found each girl in Milwaukee, WI. Loretta Kuehne ws born 26 Aug 1903 Milwaukee; Ruth Franz was daughter of Max and Louise Franz, was born 1902 and lived in Milwaukee in 1930; and there is an Irma Kaiser born in Milwaukee on 26 Aug 1905, who is probably the Irma Kaiser in the photo.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Ruth Franz.

I know its been a long time since you posted this, but my grandpa Dwaine Fertch was a cousin of her's. She lived in Hannibal, MO. My grandpa was her power of attorney. She was an RN, never married and had a brother Ennis. I'm sure he could give you more information than what I remember. It's been about 20 years since she died. We would be interested in knowing if this is the same person.
