Re: Samuel Frazee (b. 1610 in or around Dunnotar Castle, Scotland) father of Joseph Ephraim Frazee

I have been researching my Frazee lines for over 30 years and I have read the Frances Hamilton Book. Yes, it does make reference to a Samuel Frazee as the father of Ephraim Frazee. This was written by Dr. Lewis Jacob Frazee in 1886 from what appears to me as oral family history. I have a similar letter on my own line. These contain good recent (to the date of writing) information, but the further back they go the more questionable the information. I prefer to rely on historical documents from the time period.

I have looked at Google for “Samuel Frazee born 1610” and only found genealogical sites for family lists. I do not consider them reliable sources. It is easy to duplicate someone else’s errors. I have also looked at the LDS records (although that was a few years ago) and only found records for a John Frazee in Edinburg, Scotland in the 1600’s. These were actual original documents. They were a marriage and birth record. I am willing to share these or where they can be found. If anyone has the actual original documents for Samuel Frazee born 1610 could you please let me know where to find them?

I am not saying that Samuel Frazee born 1610 was not the father of Joseph Frazee died 1713/14, but I need proof to say that he is and all the documents I have does not show that proof.

Jim Frazee
Jim,

I have been researching this line for well over 10 years now and if you do a Google search of "Samuel Frazee born 1610", you can find plenty about him. LDS has records of him and his burial AND his marriage, but still no name of his wife. Joseph was also buried in New Jersey, at an Echo Lake cemetery, which I believe is no longer in existence, but I cannot say for sure as I have never been to New Jersey.

I am not perpetuating any rumors, I am going by what I have found in my nearly decade and a half research of my family line. Joseph is listed in MANY historical documents in and around Elizabeth New Jersey. I have read the books and I have (somewhere) a bound copy of the Ancestral Lines of the Hamilton, Doniphan and Frazee Lines. Although I have not looked at it in several years (I have moved several times since buying it), there are a few things in there about his existence and his connection to our Frazee line. I don't dispute that there isn't much out there about his parents in the way of place of origin, but I would hardly consider this to be a rumor of any kind.

I am spending some time in Europe this summer for my Senior Experience through my University and although I'll be in Prague primarily, I have the British Isles on my list of places to visit in search of records.

From what I've read recently, there were many records in the Echo Lake area that were destroyed in a fire since the late 17th century, so what we're looking for could have literally gone up in smoke.

Hello; I wouldn't be able to tell you without any other information. What you need to do is go to the family tree for this bible, and check it against the family you have from Sullivan County.
The earliest Lowerre listing in the bible was Samuel W. Lowerre 1788-1862. You should be able to go to the profile page for him using the following link; http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5431413/person/-1454393693

Once there, you can navigate through the tree to make your comparisons.

Good luck!
John W.

Thank you Jim, I also have been searching for over 20 years and I have found nothing as to Joseph Frazee as to his birth. The dates have ranged from 1635-1643 but I have yet to discover when or where he was born. I have not viewed the letters that are at the Friendsville library, (assuming this is the Friend Museum)but I plan to be up there this 2012 summer and I will look. The letters infer that Joseph Frazee arrived at Perth Amboy from Aberdeen, Scotland. Until I have actually viewed records that prove this it is all just assumption. I am still searching for proof. If someone has documented proof Joseph b.ca 1640 or of his son Joseph b ca 1700. I would love to see it. I do have their wills. My line also comes from Selbysport Maryland.
Joseph's (1700) son, Elisha, ca 1743 married Mary Rutan, Dec. 1763 in New Providence. His son Jeremiah is my 4th great-grandfather, I can find nothing on except for a Book that I have "Portrait and Biographical Record of the Sixth Congressional District, Maryland", published 1898. The Frazee's have been confused on the family of Jonathan, Jeremiah, and Ephraim for years. The Frazee's in the Frazee Ridge, Buffalo Run are related, I believe (supposition)Ephraim was my Elisha's uncle. Jeremiah and Jonathan are brothers. I have read in my early searches, that Ephraim was disinherited for not adhering to Presbyterianism, it would make sense since he was associated with the Baptist church. I have rambled, but my original point is unless we have proof other than census' I wish people would put their information as supposition.

Thank you again Jim for your post.

I think it was Elizabeth who married Frank Scull, lived in Scarsdale, NY, and had one child Florence who never married and had no children. Susan, Jessie, and Riche had no children. I believe that both Jessie and Riche did marry. I will ask about Susan. Marshall Warrington born Jan 30, 1914 is the only surving child of Jennie F. Smith and lives in Westmont, NJ. He will know the history. He may be reached at 856-429-4842.

I am researching Frazee ancestry as well. My aunts and uncles have also talked about native ancestry, but don't know exactly where it comes from. We are ancestors of Lewis Frazee who was from new Jersey, I think. He settled in New Brunswick, Canada.
He was the son of Timothy, who was the son of John, who was the son of Joseph.

Would you have any information about these men and their ancestry, or who they married.\

Thanks, Sue

Did you find all the links of these folks into one circle of family?

The FRAZEE - MEEKER - MILLS - etc, of New Jersey all wrap around each other. ALong with GUSTIN - HOWARD - PACK/PECK = ROBINS/ROBBINS, at least by DNA testing, on another web site comparison.

Just curious.

Pat
cw
I have Turner FRAZEE = Martha MEEKER
son of George FRAZEE - Hannah MILLS
dau of James MILLS.
Possibly this is the Richard MILLS Jr aka James MILLS that some have listed on their data files on this web site?
A will was found that listed the children of this James, and among them was Hannah as FRAZEE.

Hope this may help further.
The James you mention is in the right time frame to be Martha and Turner's son.

Pat
cw
After I sent the last msg, the place of birth for Stephen doesn't appear to be correct for Bedford Pa. I will check this out in more detail when I return. I may have that confused with another Stephen. It seems in the Frazee line names, dob's, etc. overlapped! I think that's why its so hard to be 100% sure in all cases.

All I have on Hannah Gifford's parents: A Gifford (father) and Mary Halstead (mother)
Hannah dob about 1748 in Allenwood, Washington Valley, NJ
Also, I have her husband Stephen dob as 1748 in Bedford Co., PA and dod before 1806
16 May 1765. ... Stephen FAZEER... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Hannah GIFFORD of
Shrewsbury... [w] Sam LEONARD (Governor's license at Christ Church Shrewsburg, Monmouth Co., NJ)
I do have more info but will not have email for about a week. The book you referenced by your dad's uncle: I have not been able to find a copy and would welcome info from it, Maybe we can correspond privately. Also, on Joseph - I have copied much of it from the internet. And you are correct, not all is accurate. Proof is really hard to obtain and so many researchers disagree.

Thank you once again for your help. If I may impose again, I have Stephen Frazee (dob 1745) married to Hannah Gifford (I have no parents for her) and their son, Stephen (dob 1767) married to an Amy Johnston Gifford, born in Pt.Pleasant, NJ., widow of Joshua Gifford, cousin of Stephen. Do you know anything about the Giffords? Also can you go farther back than Joseph (dob 1635)? I have done a fair bit of searching on ancestry, but find it is not always accurate. I got most of my information from the "Genealogical Record of the Frazee Family including La Fetra, Brouwer, Bogardus, Hallett and Related Families" written by my Dad's uncle Vernon Frazee. He only went back as far as Stephen F. & Sarah Allen. Thank you!

For Mary Osbourne I have a dob as: about 1659 in East Hampton,Long Island,NY. And dod as 1702. another researcher has her dod as 9 9 1728 - Elizabethtown.

I did copy the following from an undocumented internet source: Mary is listed as one of Stephen's children and married to Joseph Frasey in her father's will dated 12 July 1694, pr. 20 Jul 1698. This info came from FHL 941118, N J Families, under Osborn, taken from NJ Archives, Vol. XXI, bp 287.
For Stephen Osborne I have: Stephen Osborne, dob February 24, 1633/34 and dod July 1698. "a second lot Right, is listed as one of the original "Associates of Elizabethtowne",, page 340 - Ancestral Lines of the Doniphan, Frazee and Hamilton Families by Frances Frazee Hamilton" 1928 WW Mitchell Printing Co.
(corrections always welcomed)

Thank you for responding! THis makes more sense. I have had Stephen' birth as 1715 and Sarah Allen's as 1725.
1725 for Stephen makes the numbers fit. I had missed a generation. It still leaves Mary Osbourn's dates in question as I have her dates as 1642-c1693. Neither of which work for having aa child in 1700. Any idea? Do you know any farther back?
Thank you again!

This is one of those cases where we will probably never know his parents. It is very likely that either Joseph or Isaac (sons of Mary Osborne Frazee) was Stephen's father because Mary's father was Stephen Osborne.

Jim Frazee
Has anyone found a logical set of parents for Stephen Frazee (1715-1766), married to Sarah Allen? I had the names of Joseph Frazee and Mary Osbourne, but according to the listings on ancestry.com, she would have had to be over 90 when he was born. The other possible mother is Mary Demoney who would have been 7 at his birth. Either the dates are wrong or there is another generation between Joseph and Mary Osbourne.

Granddad Frazee died in 1996 in Muncie Indiana. His wife was K(C)athrine Silvers Frazee. They had three children; Richard, my Father, William, and Judy. I was always told that my Great Grandfather's name was William. As far as I know, we have lived in the central Indiana area for 6 generations since James Frazee bought land in 1836 from the federal government. Prior to that, the family lived in either western Ohio or south eastern Indiana. However, it does seem hard to believe they are not the same. Kermit Frazee is a very uncommon name. Hope this helps.

That time frame is very close. Do you know where he died?

I don't know much just that he was supposed to be either from or related to people from the West Virginia area, and also that he may have changed his last name from Richards to Frazee. His mother would have remarried to a Frazee - as far as I know, but I could easily have the wrong information.

Thanks!

Confused on the name Jennie Frazee.
My great-grandfather is Andrew Blair Frazee (1820 New Brunswick, NJ). He was married twice and produced no daughter named Jennie. Could this be a nickname? Based on her birth date, 1845, and death date, 1906, it would have been from the first marriage to Susan Voorhees. The only child, a daughter, was named Jane (1845-1906). Could this be her?
You can get back to me at frazeedg@gmail.com
Thank you in adavance.

I would love to know this as well as my father used to tell us we had Native American ancestry when we were young. Unfortunately he is no longer with us to ask for further details. I've been looking and looking for proof in our direct line, but haven't found anything yet. However, you may be interested in something else I came across that is very intriguing. It was found in a book by a Crow Indian Chief and has some background information on the Frazees (Joseph Ephraim's line)as they were the ancestors of Tom Yellow Tail (member of the Crow tribe). You can read it all at this link:

http://books.google.com/books?id=Dk-QJ7uWy5sC&pg=PA52&am...

Here is a link to buy the book too if you are interested. I'm actually buying more copies for Christmas gifts to my brothers this year. Good luck and let me know if you find anything good in your searches!

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/books/product.aspx?r=1&...

Hope this helps!
Nicolle Frazee
