Fletcher Sanson Riddle enlisted and served in the confederate Army in Virginia and on returning purchased 300 acres of land and the second good frame house erected on the Reedy Creek; situated a quarter mile up creek from Ravenswood and Spencer Turnpike.
He was prominent in District and county affairs for twenty years.

Someone might be interested.
A few weeks ago I sent you a picture of my father and your grandfather just to show the likeness.
I doubt that very many people would be interested in my father even though he is a great grandson
of Eli. I just sent it to you because we, out here, think the Riddle look is so strong down through
the generations.
We sent the picture to Roy Lockhart and I think he sent it to Rev. Harold McDougal.
I guess he has a lot on his mind and got mixed up.
I don't know how to put pictures on a website. I don't have a scanner.
My niece scans pictures for me sometimes. We live on the same block.
I wish there were pictures of all of Eli's children.
We may get one of his son James with his first wife, Nancy Burdett, yet.
My niece has met a descendent of his. Actually one of his grandsons, Odus, lived most of his life
here and is buried here, and this grandson' son, James, still lives here but doesn't have pictures
and got his information from us, but this lady is a descendent of one of his daughters and it seems
that daughters were more likely to have the pictures in those days.
Fletcher came out here when he was rather young, a few years after the Civil war.
I think he probably came because his brother David had been here and maybe still was.
I think part of the reason he came was likely that he hadn't divorced Mary Goff before he
married my great grandmother Ellen Frazier.
He added James to his name and went by that at times, though not in Nebraska.
I have heard that his tombstone has his name as James.
None of us have ever seen it or even a photo of it. It is in Missouri.
This was a big open country when he came out here and it was easy for a person to
get away from his past in it.
He may have had a good reason for running away instead of divorcing or he may have
just been very mad at her. No one has been able to find a record of a divorce.
It is possible that Mary divorced him later before she married Valentine.
I don't know that anyone has looked for a record of a divorce at that time.
We had quite a few and my aunt Mary had some she let us copy so we probably have all that
this branch of the family had.
We really haven't asked all of my dad's cousins.

Again have our ranks been saddened by that Grim Reaper whose touch is death, and placed
his seal upon all that is mortal of our Comrade F. S. Riddle, Company G.,
14th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry,who answered to eternal roll call, February 28, 1897.
Comrade Riddle was a member of Liberal Post, No. 515 G.A.R. Department of Missouri, in
good standing, was buried according to the burial services of the order, March 1, 1897,
in Barton City Cemetery.
Truly one of God's noble men has been taken from our midst to the grand
Post above. A true friend, a faithful comrade, and upright citizen, a loving husband and father
has gone from us forever. That genial smile shall greet us no more, that warm hand will not
clasp ours again, his counsels will not be heard in our Post room. but let us emulate the noble
life he lived, imitate the loving deeds he did and we shall approach nearer to the sphere of a
true Comrade. Resolved: that a copy of these resolutions be furnished his family, a copy each
to our local papers with request to publish, and that a page in the Minure book of our Post be

Fletcher died at Pedro,Barton,Missouri of chronic disease contracted in the U.S.Army.
He was married to his first wife under the name of Fletcher S. Riddle, to his second wife
under the name of F.S. Riddle and to his third wife under the name of James F. Riddle.
His obituary gives his name as James S. Riddle.
He was in 1860 census of Ritchie County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
He was a photographer in 1880,served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a
Corporal of Company G. 14th Regt., WVa. Infantry from September 13,1862 until honorably
discharged May 27, 1865.
He was enrolled at Ellenboro,Ritchie,Virginia now West Virginia on August 9,1862; mustered into
service September 13,1862; and discharged at Wheeling,Ohio,West Virginia.
His Obituary states he enlisted August 6, 1862 and served as a faithful soldier three years; participating in the great battles of Second Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg and others.
Lowther's History of Ritchie County, West Virginia states Fletcher S. Riddel served in
Company D., 14th Regt. W. Va. Infantry.
He is buried in Barton City Cemetery, Barton, Barton, Missouri.

In his early manhood he joined the M.E. Church.
His ability as a speaker was soon recognized and he was given license as an exhorter, then ordained to the ministry which position he filled very acceptable to the church. He moved with his family to Nebraska in 1870 and settled on a homestead in Fillmore County; moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1875, then back to Nebraska in 1886 and settled in Hall County. In 1895 they moved to southwest Missouri and settled in Liberal and Pedro, Barton County in 1896. After moving to Nebraska, he cast his lot with the United Brethren Church and continued with them as an ordained preacher.
He was a member of the Grand Army Post of Liberal, Missouri.
He made a deed in Hall County,Nebraska 1876.
He and Ellen 1880 census of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Kane Township (Council Bluffs).
They lived at Council Bluffs 1881,and he and Ellen made deeds in Valley County,Nebraska 1891 theu 1894

Fletcher Sanson Riddle enlisted and served in the confederate Army in Virginia and on returning purchased 300 acres of land and the second good frame house erected on the Reedy Creek; situated a quarter mile up creek from Ravenswood and Spencer Turnpike.
He was prominent in District and county affairs for twenty years.

Know ye, that Fletcher S. Riddle a private of Captain Jacob M. Retitz's company (C) 14th Regiment of Infantry West Virginia's Volunteers who was enrolled on the ninth day of August one thousand eight hundred and Sixty Two to serve three years during the war, is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States this Twenty seventh day of May, 1865 at Wheeling, West Virginia by reason of telegram posted war Dept. Hedgs Washington, D.C. May 4, 1865.

Someone might be interested.
A few weeks ago I sent you a picture of my father and your grandfather just to show the likeness.
I doubt that very many people would be interested in my father even though he is a great grandson
of Eli. I just sent it to you because we, out here, think the Riddle look is so strong down through
the generations.
We sent the picture to Roy Lockhart and I think he sent it to Rev. Harold McDougal.
I guess he has a lot on his mind and got mixed up.
I don't know how to put pictures on a website. I don't have a scanner.
My niece scans pictures for me sometimes. We live on the same block.
I wish there were pictures of all of Eli's children.
We may get one of his son James with his first wife, Nancy Burdett, yet.
My niece has met a descendent of his. Actually one of his grandsons, Odus, lived most of his life
here and is buried here, and this grandson' son, James, still lives here but doesn't have pictures
and got his information from us, but this lady is a descendent of one of his daughters and it seems
that daughters were more likely to have the pictures in those days.
Fletcher came out here when he was rather young, a few years after the Civil war.
I think he probably came because his brother David had been here and maybe still was.
I think part of the reason he came was likely that he hadn't divorced Mary Goff before he
married my great grandmother Ellen Frazier.
He added James to his name and went by that at times, though not in Nebraska.
I have heard that his tombstone has his name as James.
None of us have ever seen it or even a photo of it. It is in Missouri.
This was a big open country when he came out here and it was easy for a person to
get away from his past in it.
He may have had a good reason for running away instead of divorcing or he may have
just been very mad at her. No one has been able to find a record of a divorce.
It is possible that Mary divorced him later before she married Valentine.
I don't know that anyone has looked for a record of a divorce at that time.
We had quite a few and my aunt Mary had some she let us copy so we probably have all that
this branch of the family had.
We really haven't asked all of my dad's cousins.

Again have our ranks been saddened by that Grim Reaper whose touch is death, and placed
his seal upon all that is mortal of our Comrade F. S. Riddle, Company G.,
14th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry,who answered to eternal roll call, February 28, 1897.
Comrade Riddle was a member of Liberal Post, No. 515 G.A.R. Department of Missouri, in
good standing, was buried according to the burial services of the order, March 1, 1897,
in Barton City Cemetery.
Truly one of God's noble men has been taken from our midst to the grand
Post above. A true friend, a faithful comrade, and upright citizen, a loving husband and father
has gone from us forever. That genial smile shall greet us no more, that warm hand will not
clasp ours again, his counsels will not be heard in our Post room. but let us emulate the noble
life he lived, imitate the loving deeds he did and we shall approach nearer to the sphere of a
true Comrade. Resolved: that a copy of these resolutions be furnished his family, a copy each
to our local papers with request to publish, and that a page in the Minure book of our Post be

Fletcher died at Pedro,Barton,Missouri of chronic disease contracted in the U.S.Army.
He was married to his first wife under the name of Fletcher S. Riddle, to his second wife
under the name of F.S. Riddle and to his third wife under the name of James F. Riddle.
His obituary gives his name as James S. Riddle.
He was in 1860 census of Ritchie County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
He was a photographer in 1880,served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a
Corporal of Company G. 14th Regt., WVa. Infantry from September 13,1862 until honorably
discharged May 27, 1865.
He was enrolled at Ellenboro,Ritchie,Virginia now West Virginia on August 9,1862; mustered into
service September 13,1862; and discharged at Wheeling,Ohio,West Virginia.
His Obituary states he enlisted August 6, 1862 and served as a faithful soldier three years; participating in the great battles of Second Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg and others.
Lowther's History of Ritchie County, West Virginia states Fletcher S. Riddel served in
Company D., 14th Regt. W. Va. Infantry.
He is buried in Barton City Cemetery, Barton, Barton, Missouri.

In his early manhood he joined the M.E. Church.
His ability as a speaker was soon recognized and he was given license as an exhorter, then ordained to the ministry which position he filled very acceptable to the church. He moved with his family to Nebraska in 1870 and settled on a homestead in Fillmore County; moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1875, then back to Nebraska in 1886 and settled in Hall County. In 1895 they moved to southwest Missouri and settled in Liberal and Pedro, Barton County in 1896. After moving to Nebraska, he cast his lot with the United Brethren Church and continued with them as an ordained preacher.
He was a member of the Grand Army Post of Liberal, Missouri.
He made a deed in Hall County,Nebraska 1876.
He and Ellen 1880 census of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Kane Township (Council Bluffs).
