Update on Freda Family from Cellole

Still looking for the Freda family from Cellole, Casserta, Italy.

My great-grandfather was Tommaso Freda, he married Addolorata Martone (from Cervinara, Avellino, Italy).

Tommaso was born in Sessa Aurunca on January 1, 1884 (officially) but my grandmother and her brothers and sisters dispute it as December 21, 1883 (his Atto di Nascita might have been filed after the new year, hence he is listed as January 1, 1884). He came to America on Aug 20, 1907 according to ellisislandrecords.org (listed as Tomaso Freda). He moved to Jersey City, NJ and then New York City, NY after getting married on July 21, 1918.

Tommaso is known to have one brother Agostino Freda (a.k.a. Uncle Auggie and Gus Freda). Agostino was born Aug 18, 1892 and came to America May 20, 1909 and also settled in Jersey City, NJ and remained there.

When Tommaso and Agostino moved to the US, they stayed with brothers Giacomo and Antonio, respectively. However, no one in my grandmother's generation knows of these brothers.

There is one known sister, Antoniatta, who did not come to the US. She married Giuseppe Montecuollo. This information come from several letters my grandmother recieved in 1981.

There might be another brother, Luigi, which not much is known except I have breif contact with one of his decendents who has the same name as one of Agostino's children.

Tommaso's father was Carlo Freda. His mother was Giuseppa Bove. Carlo was born Oct 20, 1858 in Cerano, Casesrta, Italy. Giuseppa Bove's parents were Tommaso Bove and Lucia (last name might be Mirante).

Carlo's father was Nunzio Freda born around 1815. Nunzio married Giovanna Sogente who was born around 1818. And finally, Nunzio's father was Antonio Freda.

Looking to share and exchange information with anyone who might be related to the Freda family.

Jason Cook

He married Mary DiGregorio b: 1922 Somerville, Massachusetts, d: 1998, Florida. I know he had a brother that was a year older Anthony Freda b: 1918, Somerville, Massachusetts, d: 1985, Connecticut. Albert & Anthony's parents were Paul Freda b: 1888 (?), Rome, Italy d: 1952, Connecticut and Mary Cataldo b: 1893, Multifulgone, Italy d: 1978, Connecticut. But this is as far as I can get. I can't seem to find anything on Paul Freda or Mary Cataldo. I also don't know much about Anthony Freda, I think he had a wife, Helen? If anyone has any info on these members of my family it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

The Freda's of Boston

Ciao primi.

I recently asked my father, Carlo Felice Freda, to fill in any information on his father who came over in the early 1890's. Here it is, hope it's of some use.

My father, Generoso Henry Freda, and his family came to America from Bonito, Italy probably 1893-4 via NYC.
My father's father's name was Archangelo and his mother was Elvira( nee Lanza) and they settled in Boston. My grandfather had a bunch of brothers and sisters, I think 8-10 and at least one of those settled in NYC under the name Fredo thus Charlotte Fredo whos father's name was Michael Fredo and he was a lawyer in Boston. Michael Fredo had a brother Frank who is still alive and lives in NYC and has most of the direct knowledge remaining about the Freda/Fredo family.

Archangelo decided that he didn't like America and basically abandoned his wife and four sons Generoso, Joseph, Anthony, and Ralph and wife by returning to Italy and raising another family with a common law wife. Ther are probably some illegitimate Fredas running around Italy. Nobody in my family knows anything about Archangelo after he left because my father and his brothers were forbidden from ever mentioning his name again by their mother who was, by all accounts, a very regal and strong willed women. Basically, my father became the head of the family and with his brothers supported themselves and their mother from the time they were old enough to get a job, about 12 years old in my father' case. My father had his own successful company by the time he was 18 years old and for most of their lives 3 of his 4 brothers worked in that company, Mass. Importing in Boston.
Freda from Cellole

Searching for my Freda branch who came from Cellole, Italy.

The earliest generation we know of is Carlo Freda and his wife Guiseppa Bove. Carlo was born in 1859 in Italy and he and his wife died there. They had several children ... 2 are known to have come to America. Their first son ( my great-grandfater) was Tommaso Freda was born Dec 21, 1883 in Cellole, Italy. The other son was Augusten Freda (aka Augie and Gus), born Aug. 18, 1892. There were also several sisters (and maybe brothers) who stayed in Italy.

Tomasso Freda married Addolorata Martone (aka Dora). They married on July 21, 1918 in NYC. They lived in Manhatten and had four children ... Josephina, Carl, Claire (my grandmother) and Edith.

Augusten Freda married someone and lived in NJ (prob. Hudson). He had three sons, Robert (later changed his name to Bob Lito), Theodore and Frederic.

Any information would be useful, esp. about those still in Italy which my Uncle Carl met in the 1970's and my grandmother wrote to until 1981 when the letters stopped (maybe due to an earthquake?)

Thanks and good luck to all.
Jason

To All Fredas and Fredos

Like almost everyone else on these pages, I'm in the thick of it in researching my family background. The family name in Italy was Freda but was changed to Fredo shortly after my grandparents arrived in New York in 1899. My grandfather, Francesco Freda was born in Bonito, Italy in 1863 and was married to Pasqualina Gubitosa in her hometown of Monteperto, Italy in 1888. These neighboring towns are about 60 miles east of Naples. The eight children of my grandparents, including my father Nicholas,
all used the Fredo spelling of the name.
I'd like to share with all of you this entry
from the "Annual List of Italian Nobility", 1904 edition. Author" Asta:

(This is the English translation of the original entry, which is in Italian)

"FREDA

Resident of Foggia. This family, origin of Foggia, was decorated with the title of Marquis, with royal privilege on June 24, 1797. Conferred to Domenico Freda whose descendants are still thriving in Foggia.

Coat of Arms: Blue, with a silver tower open with windows in black with a natural lion on the left and a golden lily on the right."

For those of you in the NYC area who are just starting out, you might try researching the files in the genealogy section at the New York City Public Library at 42nd Street and 5th Ave. They have a goldmine of research materials including passenger manifests of ships arriving from Italy, US Census records (up until 1930), birth and death records and lots more. Everything is on microfilm and the staff is very helpful in assisting you with your research. Hope this helps!
