Smith; Vol. 1, 1998; Vol. 2, 2000. Picton Press (Rockland, Maine).

(2) Background: These records were sent to me, (James M. Freed), by Dr. Charles A. Heiberger in February 1985 to be included in the second volume (1985) of “Freed Family Facts”, the first volume (two issues) of which I printed in 1984. Because of increasing family and professional responsibilities, I was not able to publish additional volumes and these records were filed for future study and not found until September 2009. Unfortunately, Charles died of brain cancer September 13, 1985 (according to a January 7, 1986 letter from his wife, Delores M. Heiberger). His major genealogical publication was “The Fried/Freed Family; Descendents of Johannes Friedt (1682-1744)” [of Aspisheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany; immigrated to America, ca 1720; Mennonite], privately printed in 1984. [Heiberger’s mother, Carrie Estelle Freed, was in the 7th generation of this Fried line in America.] In his professional life, Dr. Heiberger was the co-editor of “Encyclopedia of PVC, Second Edition: Compounding Processes, Product Design”. He lived in Princeton, NJ, USA. Dr. Heiberger also sent to me a manuscript (in two parts) on the family of Samuel Fried of Lehigh County, PA. This Samuel Fried or Freed is the son of Johannes Fried/Freed and Margaretha Graf Fried/Freed and the grandson of Philip Fried or Freed and Anna Regina Benner, of Montgomery County, PA. [This Samuel Fried family is NOT Heiberger’s Freed family, showing his interest in all Fried/Friedt/Freed lines.] As time becomes available, current plans are to share this manuscript online.

(3) This information given here about the Johannes/Sara marriage is almost an exact quote as shared by Heiberger. Searching online on “Sara Roffel” provides the information that Johannes Fried and Sara Roffel were married 13 Feb. 1776, by Rev. Schmidt.

(4) The given name of the persons baptized did not include a surname on Heiberger’s list and in most cases the surname of the parents was not provided. I have assumed and added the surname of “Fried” to all the given names in this list of baptisms. Consequently, web searchers will be able to find the given and surnames together. Abbreviations: b = birth date and apparently the abbreviation of “bp” represents “baptism date”.

(5) Presumably, the abbreviation “bd.” refers to the burial date.

(6) Comment added by Charles Heiberger himself: “George, born ca 1700, may be the Hans Georg. Fried/Frid, who immigrated, arriving in Philadelphia on 24 Sept. 1737, on the Virtuous Grace, John Bull capt., from Rotterdam via Cowes. Ref: Strassburger & Hinke -Vol. I, pages 175-8.” Comment by Jim Freed: Charles suggested to me (many years ago) that perhaps this George Fried is the father of Philip Fried (Friedt, or more commonly spelled “Freed” for many of his descendants, including myself) of New Hanover Twp., Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, who married Regina Benner in 1749. (Montgomery County was formed in 1784 from Philadelphia County.)

(7) Presumably, 28/5/1 refers to 28 years, five months one day

(8) At the conclusion of these lists, Heiberger added the following: “Another item of possible interest is a baptismal record from the Lower Milford Reformed Church in Milford Twp., Trumbauersville, Bucks Co. –Johannes Fried and Margaretha Fried had a son, Heinrich Fried, b. 13 Feb. 1793; bp. 16 Nov. 1794; sponsors George Beringer and wife. Could this be Johannes and Margaretha Graf Freed of New Hanover, naming a son after his brother?”
Philip Friedt (Freed); Regina (Benner) Friedt's family, 1779

This indenture was made March 22, 1779, between Philip Friedt, a weaver, of New Hanover Twp, in the county of Philadelphia, and Regina, his wife, of the one part, and George Boocher (sp?) of the same place, farmer, of the other part. [Note: Montgomery County was formed from Philadelphia County in 1784.] Elias Affe (sp?) and Catharine, his wife, had sold on January 30, 1741/42, about 125 acres to John Benner of New Hanover Twp., tanner. John Benner died intestate, leaving the following issue:

John Benner, married Barbara
Gertrude Benner, married Adam Smith
Regina Benner, married Philip Friedt
Susanna Benner, married Andrew Kachlein (sp?)
Elisabeth Benner married Jacob Freyer
Catharine Benner married John Hanith (sp?)
Magdalene Benner married Adam Sharer
Marie Constantine Benner m. John Reinberger
Hannah Benner married Felix Brunner

On August 22, 1757, John Benner, the son, granted his portion to Adam Smith and Philip Friedt, his portion being two equal and undivided tenth parts. Henry Lora of Hatfield Twp. and Catharine, his wife (late Catharine Benner, widow and relict of the above named John Benner, the father, deceased) quit claimed into Philip Friedt any rights. Other heirs named above also granted unto Philip Friedt their shares. George Boocher paid 200 pounds for the land. Philip and Regina Friedt made their marks; witnesses were Abraham Grub and Jno Richards.

[I have no further infomation on this Benner family, except for the Philip and Regina Friedt (Philip Freed) family from whom I descend. Jim Freed.]

Grave of John Freed (1773-1812) FOUND

I just found in my records a newspaper article that Minnie N. Motsinger sent to me (date of 16 May 1985) and I apparently did not look at that newspaper article at that time!!! I have forgotten how she and I are related, but we both share the common ancestor of John Freed, 1773 - 1826.

The article is in the "Mitchell Tribune" of May 1984 or 1985 (both dates are on the clipping), of Mitchell, Indiana. [Must be 1984 as the article gives the statement of Sunday, June 3, which was true of 1984, NOT 1985.] The title of the article is "Talbott Cemetery Association prepares for 144th meeting". The critical and most important statement (for our purposes) in the article is: "The oldest grave of a veteran in Talbott Cemetery is that of John Freed. Freed was born in 1773 and was a veteran of the War of 1812. He died in 1826."

Talbott Cemetery is 1.4 miles S by SW of Bono, Indiana, (on Tunnelton-Bono Road) in Bono Township of Lawrence County, Indiana.

This John Freed married Regina Rife in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and was the son of John Freed and Margaretha (Graf) Freed and the grandson of Philip Freed and Regina (Benner) Freed (married in 1749) of Montgomery County, PA.

I was told many years ago that this John Freed was buried in a single grave "cemetery" in Orange County, Indiana, but this newspaper article must be correct!

Minnie Motsinger added this comment: "According to tradition, John Freed's body was taken by ox drawn wagon from his homestead on Section 18, Twp. 3N and "r-e-E" [must be a mistake here on the specific range]to Talbott Cemetery near Lawrencesport, Bono Township, IN. This was a distance of about 9 miles."

Jim Freed, Delaware, Ohio
jmfreed@midohio.net
Family Tree of Sam Fried, 1804-1876

In my files I have found a large scale diagram of a family tree of the family of "Sam Fried", who lived from 1804-1876. No wife is listed for Sam and no locations are given on the family tree, except that the name of Murray Fried of 25 Gildner St., Kitchener, Ontario and the date of July 1980 are written at the bottom of the tree.

Sam's children are listed as Eliza Stolz, Absalom Fried, Noah Fried, Lydia Master, John Fried and Rebecca Schneider. This specific diagram continues on only with the family of John Fried, but beneath the names of the other children are the words "See Separate Trees". The only other diagram that I have is the family tree of Sam's son Noah.

The children of John Fried (son of Sam) are listed as Allan Fried, Lawrence Fried, Owen Fried, Melilssa Gooding, Lucinda Thamer, and Lia Histand. The tree continues on through five generations of names (no dates nor spouses no locations listed).

The children of Noah Fried (son of Sam) are listed on the second tree as Laura Taylor, John Fried ("to Russia"), Emma Fenn, Elsie Reid, Roland ("Saginaw Mich") and William; the tree continues on through four or five generations (in some lines, again no dates, no spouses, and no locations mentioned except for the above "Saginaw Mich".

This is not my Freed family and I would like to give these two family tree diagrams to a member of this family. Please send a message to jmfreed@midohio.net if you would like these two family trees.
Freed as a Jewish name; DNA evidence?

As the administrator of the Freed Surname DNA Project, I have been asked several times to confirm that the "Freed" name is of Jewish origin. So far, there is no DNA evidence through this DNA study to confirm that suggestion.

Almost all of the participants in this DNA study are of American colonial origin (prior to 1776) and in Haplogroup R1b (Western European origins), and have strong protestant connections. This is not to imply that there are no Jewish traditions or connections further back.

What we need, in this DNA study, are some Jewish males with the Freed (or variations thereof) surname, who have at least a few hundred years of confirmed connections to the Jewish faith. If any of you know of such, please contact me.

Jim Freed, administrator
Freed Surname DNA Project
jmfreed@midohio.net

Freed surname project is at:
www.familytreedna.com/public/Freed
Looking for Mildreth Freed or family members!

Hi,
I am looking for the birth mother of a friend. Her birth mother was a Mildreth Freed, who gave her up for adoption thru Catholic Chaities in Chicago, IL. The daughter's adopted name is Eileen Judith Kennedy. She was born on Sept.18, 1945 in Chicago. Supposedly she was given up for adoption because her parents could not afford another child. I do not know if Freed was a maiden or married name. Can any one please help me find my friends family? The couple who adopted her did not provide a very happy or stable home. I would love to be able to help her find her family. She now lives in North Alabama.
Dianne

The Samuel Freed in your message who was born abt 1826 is not the son of Samuel and Nancy Freed.

Samuel & Nancy's son was named Samuel Rusell Freed, born 9 Sept 1833 in West Moreland PA, In 1850 census he was living with his older brother James Adair Freed in Lawrence Co. PA, He later married Margaret Garner.

Sorry, Your Samuel Freed born abt 1826 is from different parents.

Here is an update:

1st on Rebecca Friedt, found this Obit:

Rebecca Friedt was born in Westmoreland county. Penn. Dec. 2, 1825. Died at the home of her sister, Mrs. John Carper, in DeKalb county, Ind., March 11, 1903, aged 77 years, 3 months and 8 days. Sister Friedt moved with her parents from Pennyslvania to Ohio when about two years old. In 1854 she moved with her parents to Allen county, Ind., united with the United Brethren church at Maysville and lived a consistent christian until the Lord called her home to the spiritual land where sorrow comes no more. She was the oldest but one of the family. There were ten brothers and sisters, three brothers and one sister and one half brother, three half sisters, are left to mourn their loss with many friends and she was a friend to every body.

The funeral occurred at residence of Mrs. John Carper, Jackson township, Friday 13, Rev. S. P. Klotz officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Maysville, Allen county. (Re: Obituary Book, vol 1, pt 1, page 53)

This fits all my data, completely with the single exception that I thought (believe) there was an older brother Jacob Friedt, born April 24 1824 - which would make Jacob the oldest AND would have indiecated that --My John had 12 children instead of Rebecca + 10 for 11 Children.

Never-the-less, this does however prove -- That My John Friedt did move from Westmoreland Co., PA to Wayne Co., OH in about 1827 and on to Richland Co & Ashland CO, OH and finally to Allen CO., OH. It also prove that John had two wives.

I believe that his 1st wife was Lydia Zimmerman. And its been reported by "Jack" that: from Marriage and Death notices from weekly newspaper 1818-1865, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Dell Reagan Fischer, page 43, that a:

FRIEDT, John and Lydia ZIMMERMAN, both of Hempfield Twp, m 11-28-1822 by J. M. Steck (12-13-1822), This fits.

Also from a will for Jacob Zimmerman we have:

Will of Jacob Zimmerman
1843 Zimmerman, Jacob will. 3WB 100 (1495)
1. Plantation in Hempfield twp. bounded by lands of Peter Zimmerman and others, 147 1/2 acres to my son George Zimmerman. George to pay $1917 in 18 annual payments to my respective heirs hereinafter named. $106.50 to each as follows.
Son, Daniel
Dau.,Esther married to Adam Hetrick
Son, George
Son, Jonathan
Son, Benjamin
Dau.,Lydia, deceased, married to John Friedt, her children (not named)
Dau.,Polly married to David Baker,(Bechter).Polly is Maria Magdalena.
Dau.,Sarah married to John Boyers
Dau.,Rebecca married to Isaac Schooster

Daniel and Jonathan of Westmoreland county executors June 12, 1843
Proved Jan. 8, 1844
1810 and 1830 Pa. census, Westmoreland Co., Hempfield twp.

Also further info on Jacob Friedt:

here a summary of Jacob Friedt (the one I believed could be John’s son) data:

Jacob Friedt, he was born Apr 1824, married Sarah___, (Sarah was born about 1830,PA). I believe they married in Ashland Co., OH, where they had 4 children (Amanda 1852, Samantha 1850, Agent F. 1852 & Mary 1854). Then the family moved to Springfield, twp, Allen co., IN and had 3 more children (John 1857, Myra Bell 1859 & Lizzie 1861). I have found Jacob in the 1850 census in OH, & the 1860, 70, 80, 1900 & 1920 Census in IN.

Jacob died March 20 1920 in Springfield twp, Allen Co., IN. I have order a copy of his death record – so far it’s been sent to a 3rd party and he is going to forward it. I don’t know just what if any light the record will shad on the matter. BUT, Jacob must be a son, cousin, or nephew – I don’t know just what, but his path thru life parallels John’s.

I have most of Jacob’s Children defined and its interesting that his only son is named John. Anyhow, I will just have to wait, keep working and see. Ty

As the administrator of the Freed Surname DNA Project (www.familytreedna.com/public/Freed), I note that a DNA study would certainly be valuable to determine the ancestral DNA line from which this Freed family descends.

I note that the John Friedt (who was born abt 1800 in PA, and if I am interpreting the information correctly), had four sons: Jacob Friedt (born abt 1824 in PA, who had one son John b. abt 1856 in IN); G. Freidt, (male, b. abt 1831 in OH); S. Freidt, (male b. abt 1839 in OH); and David Freidt (b. abt 1849 in OH).

If any currently living Freed (Friedt, etc.) named male can trace his ancestry to one of these four sons of John (b. ca 1800 in PA), he would be a prime candidate for DNA studies.
In relation to the John Freidt/Freed family of PA, then OH and IN, the message below was sent directly to the Freed Rootsweb Mailing list rather than through the Freed Rootsweb Message board.
Meshach, Shadrach, and Abegnedo, are names found in the book of Daniel, they were the men thrown into the firery furnace.
I have not heard of these names used before. I can understand them changing it, but this interests me. We have a Samuel Freed born Sept. 13, 1796 in PA or VA who has no record of his parents. He died Oct 1968. It's a long shot but could our Samuel really be your Shadrach? He settled in Beaver PA.
We did a DNA study and know what line he came from but have not made the final connection. Have you thought about doing a DNA study? It can eliminate a lot of false speculation and keep you on the right course. Contact Jim Freed for DNA information.

I found a Catherine "Wigle" in Swanton, Fulton County, Ohio in the 1880 census (Roll: T9_1017; Family History Film: 1255017; Page: 99.4000; Enumeration District: 21; Image: 0638), married to Adam Wigle. This must be the name for whom you are searching. I did NOT find them in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Columbiana County, Ohio, but I did NOT search for all combinations or variations of names.

In the 1880 census referred to above, Catherine is listed as 63 years of age and born in Pennsylvania; Adam is listed as 64 and also born in Pennsylvania. No family members are listed with them.

There were a number of Freed families in Columbiana County, Ohio; have you been able to find the names of the parents of Catherine Freed and her ancestry back to the immigrant Freed?

Jim Freed
jmfreed@midohio.net

Benjamin was born on June 6, 1857 in Waterville Township, Lucas County, Ohio. His parents were John Freed and Margaret Allion. John was born Feb 4, 1821 in Rott Bas-Rhin, France. John and Margaret are buried at Mennonite Cemetery in Whitehouse, Ohio about 3 miles from their family farm. Benjamin married Harriet Krotzer in 1884. All of their 11 children were born in Ohio. They migrated north to Gratiot County, MI in 1903. Their farm was on Lincoln road just north of Elwell, Mi. Zelma and Lyle Parks (Clarences daughter live there now). Ben and Harriet are buried at Seville Township Cemetery on Madison road just north of Elwell. Ben's father John came to the USA with his parents Benjamin and Magdalene Fried in 1835 settling near Bascam, Hopewell twp, Seneca County, OH. They are buried at Sandridge Cemetery in Bascam. I could go on here forever.... I have cemetery photos and farm locations for all. I have more info than you could digest in a whole years hard reading. You are going to run into many, many Ohio Freed's that are cousins to Benjamin. I have them sorted out. It took years.

Freed Deadends - Samuel, Sarah, etc.

Reviewing the message board, it looks like most Freeds are from PA. I am looking for Samuel Freed born in the mid 1800's possibly in Missouri. He died prior to 1887 and was married to Sarah Bowers Freed from Illinois (B 1858, D 1887) according to stories handed down in our family. Their children were Ernest LeRoy, Bertie H., and James William. I am a desendent of James but he was orphaned at age 5 and we have very little information on the family.

The family lived in Ottumwa/Bloomfield area of Iowa. Sarah and James are buried in Des Moines.

I cannot find marriage or birth information for Sarah or Samuel. Am also looking for death information on Samuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

She is buried in Woodbridge Township Cemetery, Hillsdale County, Michigan.

According to the 1900 census, Mary gave birth to 10 children, 8 of whom were alive in 1900.

1) William b. Aug 1854 in PA - I don't think he ever married.
2) Nancy b. 1856 in PA, died 1916 and is buried with her mother in Woodbridge Township Cemetery, Hillsdale County, Michigan. Never married.
3) Betsy/Beatrice/Betty born March 12, 1857 in PA, married George Samuel Elems.
4) John b. 1861 in PA
5) Oliver b. Jan 19, 1863 in PA, died April 3, 1870 and is buried in Keller Cemetery, Jenera, Hancock County, Ohio. "Oliver, son of S & MA Freed"
6) Samuel born Dec 1867 in OH - don't believe he ever married.
7) Lydia b. Oct 25, 1871 in OH and married John Shroats
8) Jane b. 1871 in OH (Maybe Lydia's twin??)
9) Rhoda b. April 1874 in OH, married Virgil Smith
10) ? Unknown child

I believe Samuel was the son of John and Nancy Freed who were living in Beaver County, PA during the 1850 census as there is a Samuel who was single and their son listed with them.

In the 1860 Franklin Ts, Beaver Co, PA census, Samuel is shown as 33, married and living with his wife Mary, and children William, Nancy, and Betsy.

In the 1870 and 1880 census, they are living in Eagle Township, Hancock County, Ohio.

In 1900, Mary and the children are shown in the census, still living in Eagle Township, Hancock County, Ohio. Samuel is not listed which means he died before 1900 (I believe he died Aug 25, 1881 and is the one buried in Keller Cemetery).

In 1910 census, Mary and her family have now moved to Woodbridge Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan.

Mary died in 1912.

The 1920 census Woodbridge Township, Hillsdale County, MI shows William and Samuel (both single), living with their sister Lydia and her husband John Shroats.

I'm interested in knowing if anyone has any idea what brought Mary and her family to Hillsdale County, MI after Samuel's death.

Do we know for sure that Samuel is indeed the son of John and Nancy Freed?

My Freeds are buried in the same cemetery - opposite side -- but I've been unable to tie Samuel and his family into mine. For anyone who is interested, I do have photos of Mary and Nancy's tombstones here in Hillsdale County.

Thank you.
