My Great Great Grandfather Joseph and Lena Freedman came from Riga to Hull England then to Edinburgh in Scotland, and died in Wellington New Zealand. Freedman is not a very popular name in those times, so likley we are related in some way if your Freedmans came from Riga too. gerryfreedman@msn.com

Thanks again for the information you have sent. Unfortunately most of the details you sent differ in at least one detail, such as birthplace. I am unsure of immigration date but I know Yetta was born in Poland not England. The Shelby connections in 1920 are definitely of interest.

My grandfather was Stanley Freedman, probably short for Samuel. My father, his son, passed away in 2006. We had pictures and stories. I vaguely remember my father mentioning we had Kaplans in the family. I also remember something about family origins from Riga.

That's all I know though.

I hope this reply reaches you since you posted so long ago. I have a ship's passenger list from 1904 showing a Samuel Freedman age 11 - born about 1893 - the ship was the Haverford and it went from Liverpool, England to Philadelphia. The reason I am responding is there was a Samuel Freedman who knew my ancestors who were named Kamazarov/Komsarov (we think). I am looking for relatives of this Samuel Freedman. I don't know if we have a connection here. There also was an M. Freedman, who I think may have been Samuel's brother - not sure.

He married Mollie Werner also from Russia. They had two daughters in 1930 named Minnie and Lillian. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me. Lillian married a Harry Van Buren in 1940 and had a least one son named Norman J Van Buren. Thanks Jean Burden

Tracing Barry & Joseph Freedman B. circa 1940

Hi, my neighbour, Joan Freedman is trying to trace her 2 sons, Barry & Joseph Friedman (or Benjemin - maiden name?)
The family were buried in their Bristol home after a bombing raid during the second world war. Joan was hospitalised and her sons were rehomed. All contact with her sons was lost and she has no trace of them since.

The family originated from Walsall / Birminhgham in the UK. Joan's maiden name was Benjemin (unsure of spelling) her husband was Joseph. Again, all contact lost with Joseph senior during the war.

The two boys were approx 9 months and 2 years old when they were taken away. Joan is unsure whom or which organisation was responsible so has no clue where they were rehomed. Sory, that's an appalling term, but i can't think of a suitable alternative.

So, Barry and Joseph will be approx 65 - 70 years old now.

Any help or pointers for suitable agencies to asist wirth the search would be most welcome.

Thanks for reading this.

Vernon Hall

FREEDMAN / FRIEDMAN from Russia (now Lithuania)

A wonderful fellow researcher has just been able to determine that my Russian-Jewish family of FRIEDMAN/FREEDMAN was from the area of Serey/Sereje, Russia (now Seirijai, Lithuania). Isaac DRATSCH (born about 1884; Isac Drash on his death certificate), son of Jacob and Sarah, married Ester FRIEDMAN/FREEDMAN (born about 1854), daughter of Israel and Annie. They immigrated to NYC in 1884 and 1887. They had 10 children -- at least 2 were born in Serey. Anyone have any information on these families? Thanks so much.

Annie Caplan - looking for her Riga connection.d Manchester.UK

My Uncle recalls his grandmother (Annie Caplan; b. 1877 approx) saying they came from Riga. Using calculated guess work I believe they arrived in the United Kingdom about 1886
Her parents are Lenah ( later Lilly)[grocer dealer working from home] and Jacob Caplan. Jacob was a Rabbi [b.1847 d. circa 1889) All cited as born in Russia.
According to the 1891 census she was born in 'Russia' (b.1877) that was the catch all for that region).with other siblings:
Rachel [b. 1871 Russia] is already married by the time of the 1891 census to Solomon Schwartz [b.1871 Russia.] I believe they later emigrated to USA.

David[b 1881]garment maker
Jane [b 1883]
Sarah [b 1876]married Harris Willss gramentmaker b. Russia [1872] two daughters Dolly [b1898] and Florrie [b 1900]
Simon (Lain)[b approx.1886]
Morris [b 1890] born Manchester England
Rebecca [1888] born Manchester England
Mendel [b. 1893] born Manchester England
Hyman [b.1896 approx] born Manchester England
Abraham [b.1894 approx] born Manchester England
Jacob [b.1898 approx] born Manchester England

Amelish Licht is cited as a niece of Lenah and Jacob in the 1891 England and Wales census. Amelish is born 1872 and is a tailoress on the census forms. She is not living with them in 1901 census. Can't find her.
We have a family story that this part of the family were neighbours of Maisie Moscos ( of Almonds and Raisins fame).
I am looking for information on any aspect of my family. I am especially eager to know where the family originally came from Latvia or Lithuania.
Annie went on to marry Louis Marshall - I have drawn a blank on him completely.
Question for the African American Freeman Genealogists?

FREEMAN, JACOB E. (ca.1841-?). Jacob E. Freeman, who represented Waller, Fort Bend, and Wharton TEXAS counties in the Fourteenth and Sixteenth legislatures, was born a slave in Alabama around 1841. He arrived in Texas at the age of eleven and apparently assisted his master in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Freeman was a mechanic in the Hempstead area by 1873, when he served on the Waller County grand jury. In July 1873 he participated in the Colored Men's Convention at Brenham, TX which sought to enhance the status of African Americans in Texas politics. He won election to the Texas House of Representatives for the Fourteenth Legislature, 1874, and served on the Penitentiary Committee. He was elected to the Sixteenth Legislature in 1879. He ran unsuccessfully for the legislature as a People's party candidate in 1886. Although he was a member of the Republican party, Freeman campaigned for a Greenback party candidate for governor in 1878 and for a Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 1892. At the time of the Fourteenth Legislature Freeman was married.

Are you related to this Freeman descendant?
We are needing dates of death and the place so he can have an obituary posted.
If you have the information, please advise. He was one of the first African American politicians in Texas. Thank you.

Freedmans from Austria, PA, OH, TX

I am looking for info on Isaac Freedman and his wife Rose (Rosa, Rosie). According to census records they immigrated in 1887 and the 1900 census shows them in York, PA. along with children Minnie (b. Austria d. 1903 York, PA), Jacob (b. York,PA 1889 d. Tx 1971), Lena (b. 1895 York PA), Rebecca (b. 1902 York, PA), Salli (b. 1892 York, PA), Harry (b. 1890 York, PA) and Hattie (b. 1893 York, PA). The 1900 census also lists two men, Joseph Mendowitz and Daniel Zeigler as brothers to Isaac, both born abt. 1877. 1910 Census shows Rose, Harry, Salli, Rebecca, Lena and Hattie in Franklin, Ohio. I cannot find anything on Isaac again. I know that Jacob ends up in Texas at some point (he is my ggrandfather) and so does Rose, Harry, Hattie, Rebecca by 1930. I do not know what their name was before coming to the states or which port they came in at. If anyone has any info please let me know.

Thanks. I did just find my Minnie Freedman's death record from the York county,PA Archives. She died in 1903 (age 19) in York county. The 1910 census shows Rose (mother) and children Lena, Rebecca, Harry, Salli and Hattie in Franklin, Ohio Columbus Ward 2 and then in 1920 I have Rose, Hattie, Harry and Rebecca in Lockhart, Tx. I loose Lena and Salli after 1910 so if you have any knowledge of either of them that would be great! Thanks for responding and trying to help.

I am looking for info on Jacob Freedman, siblings Lena, Rebecca, Sally, Harry,Hattie and Annie. Jacob married Esther Miller. I found them in PA, Jacob and Esther ending up in Texas. I believe his father was from Hungary and possibly his father's name was Issac or Isidore, mother was Rosa. Any info would be appreciated. Jacob had children, Merle, Lester, Robert, Ruth and Erwin. There is some sort of Ohio connection as 2 of his children were born in Ohio. Jacob was born in Philly.

do you know Morris's parents names? I have ancestors, Isaac and Esther Freedman who lived in London, they had a son named Morris, but can't find a son Nathan. My GGrandfather was Lewis Freedman, could be Louis on Cencus, who came to Australia, but several years later left for ?USA, unable to track him down

Regards, Gwen

Searching for researchers of this family:

Abraham Moshe Freedman and wife Rebecca (?) who began in Poland, moved to England, possibly ran a greengrocer's shop in London in the late 1800s. They had these children:

Annie Freedman b. 1885 in Poland, m. Treytl (Tratel) "Thomas" Finklestein (Finkelstein) Cohen (changed name from Finklestein to Cohen, had children Tessie and Barnard

Bernard, married Minnie, had sons Henry and Phillip

Rebecca, Beckie, married Nat Feinberg

Fanny, married Joseph Morris, did not come to America, had Stan, Monty, and Edna

Rose, married Benjamin, no children

Isadore, married Esther, had Bessie, Dorothy, and Marvin

Joseph, married Dorothy, had daughter Gloria

Ettie, married Jack Seelin, had son Monty.

The father left for America first, with oldest son Barnie, not before 1897. The other children followed piecemeal and the mother brought the youngest two between 1911 and 1914.

Hi, this sounds like it could well be a match. I know Morris and Nathan had sisters, one of whom did also emig. to the USA from England, do you know the name of the sister?

Anothery sister of Morris that I have info on, was Dora, who married Sam Bloom. Do you know if Nathan also had a sister called Dora?

NB My parent's names are Philip and Madeleine. My late grandfather Marcus (Mark) Freedman was Morris's son.

Look forward to hearing back from you.

Best wishes,

Paul.
I think the possibility is very good. I believe my grandfather Nathan had a brother named Morris. What are your parents' names? I will look at the ship manifest as soon as I have a chance. Nathan actually went to New York before Philadelphia. I believe a sister also came with them.
