Thank you, My Freels come from I believe, Daniel O'Friel Va. to James b. 1765& Jean Wood. to Benoni b. 1787 he in Indiana to Iowa To Mathew b. 1811 & Barbara Indiana they moved around a bit. Amos Edward b. 1855 he went to Montana in 1906. to Henry & Minnie Freel in Washington. I do have a lot about the Washington Freels and some on the Montana Freels. the name spelling seems to have changed between Daniel & James I think. Oh I was spelling Morris not Maurice thanks karen

The story is called "The Martins of Virginia". To get to it, do a "search all records" for maurice o'friel, and it is the first result that comes up. My Freels went from Virginia to Indiana, to Iowa. Regards, Kim

Daniel O'Freil was also my GGGGG grandfather! I am descended through his son James, then Charles, then John, then Margaret. I just started researching this line a few days ago and had no idea there was so much info out there, especially about then settling in Augusta, VA. I found an interesting story this morning, "The Martins of Virginia", by Evelyn L. Martin Devore Miller, when doing a general search for Maurice. It is very detailed and gave me a lot of insight. I have returned to this Freel Message Board after a few years absence. To date we have no research to indicate any Donald Freel in my line. If you read the previous postings related to this subject you will see that there are two United Empire Loyalists who came to Canada from NY. They were Peter Freel = Mary Lake > Prescott, ON and my John Freel = Deborah Morgan > Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON.

I also know that there is another Freel family who came to the Hamilton, Ontario area from Ireland circa-1850's. They named their town Freelton. Are you descended from that line?

Interested in sharing info about John Freel b. c 1743 in Ireland and married Deborah Morgan, dau. of Thomas Morgan. They lived in Johnstown, NY. Children were Barbara b. 1770 (married Samuel Cox), Thomas b. 1773, James, and Hugh b. c 1780. They were Loyalists during the Amer.Rev. and settled in Niagara, Ontario, Canada after the war.

I was particularly interested in your first post on 23 Oct 2001 where you mentioned church and cemetery records for the Perry County, Ohio Friel family, specifically John, Patrick, Hugh, Stephen, James, and others. A description of my Friel Line:
My gggrandmother is Isabelle J. Friel born Mar 1864 in Illinois. She is the daughter of John J. Friel (born 1833 in Pennsylvania) who married Isabell Green (born 1835 in Pennsylvania) on 27 Oct 1852 in Perry County, Ohio. John and Isabelle are found on the 1860 census in Bearfield, Perry County, Ohio. They are enumerated next to many other Friels, including Patrick Friel, who I believe is the father of John J. Friel because John appears in Patrick's household in the 1850 Census in Bearfield, Perry County, Ohio. Patrick appears to be born in Ireland around 1792.

This is a long shot, but sometimes it works. I have been looking for the family of John Freel of Co. Sligo, probably parish of Ahamlish. I know of two daughters - Catherine, who married Owen Feeney of Drumcliff in 1805, and Dorothy, who married Patrick Clancy of Lislary in 1809. One of the witnesses at the Freel/Clancy marriage was a James Freel. He would probably be a generation older than your James, I would guess. I know of no specific Freel descendants, but several grandchildren of the Freel/Clancy family emigrated to Crawford Co., PA, which adjoins Venango Co., starting about 1869/70. Just a funny coincidence.

What little I have is Andrew Jackson Freel married Mary Ann Nutter. Besides Frances M., they also had Sarah and David. That's all I have on this family. The difficulty with the Richardson County Freels(and Gage and Pawnee counties for that matter) is that if anything happened to one of them, another Freel raised their children and it poses a problem sorting out who originally belonged to whom. "Cousins" turn out to be second and third cousins several times removed.

My William Freel (without the e) is from Mara Towhship, Simcoe County, Ontario. His parents emigrated in 1845. If we are related it's back in Ireland.

I am looking for information about the family of James Freel who emigrated from County Sligo, Ireland, around 1845 (one of his children is said to have been born on the Atlantic Ocean). The family first settled in Mara Township, then Ontario County now Simcoe. They alternated between Mara and Venango County, Pennsylvania. His sons emigrated to Bay City, Bay, Michigan. Collateral lines include Spegel, Rivard, Meloche, Ferguson, Dorion, Kelly, McDermott, Scott, and Cavanaugh. Any further information would be greatly appreciated.

It would include insurance proceeds, overpaid fines, any money that they couldn't find the owners for. There are about 300 entries for Freels--unfortunately none for me. Good luck!!!

I just came across your posting about Catherine Seed and William Freele. I have been researching Francis Hannah Freele, their youngest daugther, who was born in Adelaide Twp, Middlesex Co., Ontario in 1848. Francis (usually called Hannah) married William Henry in 1869. He was born in 1849 in Chicago or Cleveland (the records vary). I am researching this family for a 3rd party (William and Catherine's 3rd g-granddaughter), but would be interested to hear back from you. Catherine was as far back as I had been able to get any information, so the details of John Seed's longevity is certainly interesting. Perhaps your cousin who has researched the Freele family might wish to get in touch as well.

The only info I have about James is that he went to Maryland, Eastern Shore. I have a few pages copied from "The History of Pocahontas County" that has this listed only it lists Daniel as the father and don't list Morris. This is obviously an error. There are Daniels in more than one generation and can get confusing.

We was told that Joyce's birth mother became vary sick she was dieing and she ask her best friend Lucy Sinkiss to take Joyce and raise her Lucy latter married Henery G. Cline.

I am researching an ancestor Susannah Freel/Friel born in NY in 1802 (Genesee County according to her death record, but that includes several presentday counties). Her parents were Peter Freel/Friel and Mary Lake. She married William Moore in 1819 in Kingston, Frontenac Co, Ontario.
Peter was born in 1772 according to some. He married Mary Lake in Ernestown, Ontario.. they came back to NY (Mary's parents were from NY). I am assuming he also was from NY but I don't know.
I am trying to find any info on Susannah, as to her place of birth etc, or Peter, where he was born or his parentage.
Any info you may be able to provide would be of interest.

My grandma was Dorothy Webster Freel before she married my grandad Foster Percy gray.
Anyway, her father was Barnard Freel born Earsdon 1900, His father was John Freel born Bedlington 1864 and his father was John Freel born Ireland 1839. We also originate from a mining family too. Do any of these names sound familiar.

You need to look at the J&J Cooke Ships Passenger lists ( on Olive Tree Genealogy site) there are a few James Freels who emigrated between 1842 and 1864. The list is organised by destination and gives the passenger lists for each ship and the search is free. Hope you find who you need to there.

Charles Friel/Freel/Frill born Ireland circa 1820

We are trying to locate the town in Ireland where this chap was born or lived as so far we cannot locate him. He might not have been able to read or write so the surname spelling could be up to the person recording events of the time. We do know he had at least one son Cornelius and there is a family pattern of these two names recurring through the line. Other family names are John, Robert and Michael. It's possible Charles could have been a miner (either limestone or coal) or a labourer. No sign of him on the Donegal Relief Fund Ships records so it looks unlikely he went to Australia.

Both John and Frances died in the 1940's in California.

I am the descendant of a Philip FREAL (or FREEL) who was born in Co. Donegal in 1837 and migrated to Australia on the 'Lady Elma Bruce' in 1859 as part of the Donegal relief fund. His Father was also by the name of Phillip FREAL and his Mother was Margaret CAFFREY.
From the ships records it says that Philip's Father was Paddy (Deceased) and his Mother was Peggy (short for Margaret) and that he was a Labourer born in Gweedore, Co. Donegal. I don't know if he was a relative, but the name was changed repeatedly throughout the family history and was spelt variously, FREAL, FREEL, FREE, FEEELE, FREEHILL etc...I don't have any further information at this time, but I thought it might be helpful to put our heads together.
