This from the papers of my husband's grandmother, who was a descendant of Philip Freeman. She had the common misinformation as to the mother of Philip's children, so I have corrected that information. The rest of the information is copied as it appeared in her notes.

Philip Freeman + 1. Barbara Seidenspinner Bonjour 2.
I am trying to search for Simon Gless' family. He is my great grandfather. With what you have on Gaston Oxarart, does it say how he was related to the Gless family. I would like to find Simon's parents. I know that one census (I think 1880) shows Simon working as a laborer for a family in San Fernando. But I find nothing else.

Thank you,

Aric Gless,
Irvine, CA

I knew an Eddie Freemnan in the 80's and still know his grandkids. He was a big time guitar player in London during the second world war and played with some big time orchestras.
Re: Freeman surname, Prence? Elijah? Silas?

Elijah Freeman, the son of Prence/Prince Freeman, was born in Mansfield, Conn. on 3 Nov 1757. His family moved to Hanover, N.H,, in 1762. Elijah was living in Norwich, Vt., by 1790, and removed to Waterford, Vt., in 1796. He died there on 21 Dec 1796. He had no child named Silas.

Silas Freeman, later of Clymer, was born 10 Jan 1775 in Newark, N.J., a son of Hezekiah Freeman, and lived in Morristown, N.J. until 1796 or 1797, when Hezekiah removed with his family to Onondaga County, New York, in a township that was soon after reorganized into Cayuga County. The area where he lived bore the names Elbridge, Aurelius, and Brutus successively. Hezekiah died in 1812.

Silas appears in the 1800 census in Aurelius and in the 1810 census in Brutus, in a part later called Sennett. In 1828 he had removed with his wife and 13 children to Clymer, Chautauqua County, N.Y., where he was listed in the 1830 census. He died there on 3 November 1836.

These Freemans were descendants of Stephen Freeman, who arrived (presumably from England) in 1645 and settled in Milford colony in what is now Connecticut. In 1666 he was among the founders and original settlers of Newark, New Jersey.

All of the records for the families mentioned above are documented in my book "Freeman Families of New England in the 17th and 18th Centuries" (Westminster, MD: Heritage Books, 2005). Copies are available in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, the New England Historic Genealogical Society Library in Boston, and the Allen County Library' Genealogical Collection in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

My line goes back to the son of John, Nathaniel (1668-1760). In my previous email, I was answering someone who wanted information about John (1622-1650), the son of Edmund (1596-1682). I hope my information about those Freemans was correct. My line stayed in New England right down to my father (1894-1978), the son of Leonard (1850-1916). And if you are in fact the author of "The Freeman Families of New England" (3 volumes), thank you so much for sharing all your wonderful information about the Freemans (and clarifying lots from "Freeman Genealogy" by Frederick Freeman). Those volumes are real treasures!
Freeman surname, Prence? Elijah? Silas?

I need help with a Freeman situation. I have documented Silas Freeman being born in Clymer, Chautauqua, New York in 1774. I have his father as Elijah Freeman, born in 1757. His father was Prence Freeman, born in 1713 in Sandwich, Barnstable, Mass. Okay.... anybody have any documentation that this is correct? It seemed to be working out well, but I now see that there are many Freeman's who have Silas's father as Hezekiah and up a different line altogether. Any help??? ALSO.... both have Silas's wife as Sarah Sally French, father Ebenezer French - and by her name her family leads back through the Bassetts, .... Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Edmund Freeman founder of Sandwich MA

I think there is some confusion in the family line you've proposed.

Starting from Edmund Freeman the immigrant of 1635. His son John (1622-1719) did have a son by the same name, but that John Freeman (1651-1721) had no son named William. The first John Freeman (1622-1719) did have William (1660-1687) who had William (1686-1772). However, that William Freeman did not have a daughter named Christian. Among all the Freemans of New England mentioned in my book [Freeman Families of New England in the 17th and 18th Centuries (Westminster, MD: Heritage Books, 2005) the name Christian only occurred once, for a child of Capt. Elkanah Freeman, born about 1752 and baptised in 1760 in Harwich, Mass. There is no further information about this Christian Freeman. There was a Christiana Freeman born in Easton, NY, in 1784, but that was in an entirely diiferent Freeman family, unrelated to the Edmund Freeman line.

The WorldConnect database (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/) has 23 listings for a Christian Freeman who married Blake Baker in North Carolina. A number of these say that her father was King Freeman, also of North Carolina.

I am just now confirming my Freeman link. I am related to the Freemans through my ggggrandfather Blake Baker who married Christian Freeman, dau. of William Freeman, son of William Freeman, son of John Freeman, son of John Freeman, son of Edmund Freeman. I do not know if Elizabeth or Bennett was John's mother. If anyone else has this genealogy or knows something about it, I would love to hear from them.
moromans@aol.com
Re: Freeman DNA - Bedford Co., VA; Roane Co., TN Webster Co., MO; OK and TX

When my Uncle William Mitchell Freeman (1867-1930) visited his grand-uncle Littleton T. Freeman (1809-1891) a grandson of James Freeman, Littleton was 81 years of age. This is the information he shared with my Uncle Willie:
Littleton Freeman said:
My grandfather came from England in about the year 1610 and settled in Bedford County, Virginia; there he married a lady by the name of Susan — and raised a large family of children, seventeen (17) in number, most all boys. His name was James, and he was a Baptist preacher and a very wealthy man ......
So even a grandson did not know of the Native American background.

Paul Johnson writing in A History of the American People copyright 1997, first Harper Perennial Edition, published 1999, wrote:

In Part Five-Industrial America, 1870-1912, p.518-519,
The more they (speaking of the Indians) and the white settlers who displaced them, are studied in detail, and without prejudice on either side, the smaller the differences between them appear. Both Indians and whites were living in the same, often harsh country, and trying their best to master it, in different ways. There seems to have been no discernible difference in intelligence, as is attested not least by the large numbers of Indians who passed imperceptibly into the ranks of the whites and underwent racial and ethnic oblivion in a very few generations.
Footnotes refer to R. H. Pearce: Savagism and Civilisation: the Indian and the American Mind (New York, 1967); Stanley Vestal: Warpath and Council Fire: Plains Indians, 1851-91 (New York 1948).

And in Part Six-Melting-Pot America, 1912-1929, p. 667, he writes:
It is also true that many Northerners had some Indian blood, and boasted of it. The James family of Boston and both the Oyster Bay and the Long Island Roosevelts were cases in point. (This would be Theodore Roosevelt’s family – the Oyster Bay Roosevelts)
Footnotes refer to Madison Grant: The Passing of the White Race (New York 1916) 3-36.

Family History from Harold Freeman, my cousin and a son of William Mitchell Freeman:
The family history from Harold Freeman dates from July 9, 1980.
My Father told me that James Freeman of Bedford County, Virginia, was a Baptist Preacher and that on or near his farm there was a Church known as Freeman Baptist Church. It was still there in 1922, when he and my Mother visited the area.

In the book, Our Kin: The Genealogies of Some of the Early Families Who Made History in the Founding and Development of Bedford County, Virginia, copyrighted in 1930 by Mary Denham Ackerly and Lulu Eastman Jeter Parker, we have information on Indians in early day Bedford County, Virginia.

BEDFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA
p.8
As is true of most of the counties in this section of Virginia, Bedford was once the home of the red man. Tomahawks and arrowheads picked up in various parts of the county bear testimony to his dominion; while human skeletons and implements of war have been exhumed in the vicinity of Montvale, and an old barrow still remains there on the south bank of Goose Creek. An Indian fort, in which Mary Ingles sought refuge after her captivity and eventful life among the savages, stood near this barrow; and from here two Indian trails lead in directions of other settlements—one to the north between the Peaks of Otter, and the other to the west through Bugord’s Gap (now Villamont) in the Blue Ridge Mountains.,……

Like you, I am very curious of our Native American background. I would like an indication as to what Indian tribe etc. but I guess we'll have to say as Will Rogers often did, "My ancestors didn't come over on the Mayflower. They met the boat."

You can be sure that I will share any further information that I receive from any other source.
Freemans in Northern Ireland

There were - and still are - many Freemans in Ballymoney and Coleraine. They went all over the English speaking world from the 1840s onwards. My great grandfather came to England in 1862 - most of his cousins had gone to the USA, but that was a bad year to go there.

I have read the 1000 most recent posts without finding any mentioning Irish ancestors. I have done a lot of work on the Freeman families of Ulster, and where they went, and if there is anyone out there who is interested, I should be pleased to hear from you.

Michael Freeman

Aaron Freeman and Mary Bently family...new information prooves this family began with a Native American male...

Over the past 15 years as I've researched my Freeman ancestors, I've followed the connections made by other researchers to John Freeman of Norfolk County Virginia. Evidence seemed likely that this information was true, but lacked definitive proof, and I was never happy with the lack of evidence supporting the connections. Recently I've had to change my thinking completely as additional research and DNA testing are leading me down another path. Although many people believe that Aaron Freeman who married Mary Bently in Rowan County North Carolina is the grandson (or sometimes son) of John Freeman and Tabitha Hoyter of Chowan County North Carolina, new information suggests that this is untrue.

Recently a fellow male researcher (D. Freeman) with proven connections to Aaron and Mary's son Aaron Posey Freeman took the Y-DNA test (http://www.carnicle.com/DNA_Project/) and we discovered that our Aaron Freeman line started with a Native American male (Q1a3a Haplotype), probably at least one, possibly two generations before Aaron who marries Mary Bently.

Although I am unsure at this time who Aaron's father is, it is possible his ancestors were Waccamaw Indians who settled in Bladen County North Carolina (just south of Rowan Co.), where Freeman is a prominent name amongst Waccamaw surnames. Other possibilities could lead to the Monacan tribe from Bedford Co. Virginia or the Tuscarora Tribe who joined the Lumbees or Cherokees in North Carolina. Only time and further research will lead us to a definitive answer.

We do know that Aaron first shows up in Rowan Co. North Carolina in marriage records, marrying Mary Bently December 17, 1769. In addition to being signed by Benjamin Bently (Mary's brother) the bond is reported to be signed by James Freeman, possibly Aaron's brother or father. Other Freeman's in Rowan Co. dating back to this time include John Freeman and Samuel Freeman who show up in 1759 Rowan Co. tax lists and Isaac Freeman who marries Agness Faggot January 19, 1762. Isaac is listed as a free man of color, a term often used for Native Americans as well as for free Blacks and Mulattos, in early census records. The 1790 census records report that Agness Freeman is listed as white. Additionally, a Sarah Freeman marries Adam Hall Jr. in Rowan Co. March 16, 1778.

There is further confusion with this line as Samuel Freeman, a descendent of John Freeman of Norfolk Virginia, does settle in Surry Co. just north of Iredell and Rowan Counties. However, according to Merrill Hill Mosher, author of John Freeman of Norfolk County, Virginia: His Descendents in North Carolina and Virginia and Other Colonial North Carolina Freeman Families, this Samuel was living in Granville Co., and it isn't until 1771 that he purchases land in Surry Co., while our Freeman family was in Rowan Co. as early as 1759. Additionally, our Freeman family settles in an area that later became Wilkes Co., as well as in Iredell and Burke Counties, eventually moving further west into Buncombe, Madison and Haywood Counties.
I am looking for Mercedes Joan Freeman & Helen Rendell Freeman, children of Joshua Porter & Ethel Hatfield Freeman who lived in Yonkers, NY. Ethel Hatfield was the daughter of John Gilbert Hatfield and Mary Ann Reeves who was born in 1846 in Lee, Oneida Co., NY. I am trying to find the Freeman sisters hoping they might have information about the siblings of Mary Ann Reeves and her parents, Jeremiah Aylward Reeves and Dorothea Warth. Dorothea Warth, born in Switzerland, was the daughter of Marcus & Elisabeth Becker Warth. I am descended from Marcus & ELisabeth Warth and hope to find more about their family. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Kathryn Mereness - Email MMer2000@aol.com
