Sigmund Freudenberg (1828-1908)

Sigmund Freudenberg (1828-1908), aka Siegmund Freudenberg was a worker at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (b. 1828, Friedrichswerder, Berlin, Brandenburg, Prussia/Germany - March 23, 1908, Manhattan, New York)

Birth:
He was born around 1828 in Berlin, Germany.

First marriage:
Sigmund married Clara Charlotte Horwitz (1834-circa 1861) around 1855. Her parents were Leopold Ludwig Horwitz and Dorothea Pauline Lousia Borneman. The Horwitzs were most likely Jewish.

Children:
Maximillian S. Freudenberg I (1858-1921); Alfred Freudenberg
(1859–?); and Gertrude Freudenberg (1861–?).

Berlin:
The first clue that the family was from Berlin came from the World War I draft registration of Richard F. Freudenberg (1896-1988) in 1918. Richard was the son of Max. The idea that he was from the Friedrichswerder church comes from a reference to a Clara Charlotte Horwitz (1834-?) christened on September 29, 1834 at Friedrichswerder and recorded in the International Genealogical Index.

Death of first wife:
Clara most likely died in childbirth in Germany between 1861 and 1865. Her last child was born in 1861 and her widower came to the US with the children in 1865.

Emigration:
Sigmund and his children came to the United States in 1865 and they appear in the 1870 US census.

Second marriage:
He married Augusta Herrman (1835-1904) between 1865 and 1868.

Children:
Kate Freudenberg (1869–after 1880); Carry Hildise Freudenberg (1871–after 1880); Harriette Freudenberg (1871–after 1880); and Jennie Freudenberg (1872–1943) Eidelman.

Manhattan and Philadelphia:
In 1870 he was living in Manhattan, New York City, New York and "Siegmund" was an agent at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He resided in Ward 15, District 12. In 1880 he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at age 51. Siegmund resided at 935 North 6th Street. His occupation was listed as "life insurance". In 1905 he was living in Manhattan, New York City, New York and was listed as the retired father-in-law of Joseph Eidelman.

Death:
He died on March 23, 1908 in Manhattan and his death certificate was number "9795".

Relationship:
Sigmund Freudenberg (1828-1908) was the second great-grandfather of Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ).

Source:
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for Findagrave starting on September 10, 2003.

Updates:
"Siegmund Freudenberg" (1830-1908) who died on March 23, 1908 in Manhattan was a suspect for being our Sigmund but there was no evidence. The family oral tradition was the Max came alone as crew on a ship and stayed on in the US illegally by "jumping ship". Sigmund never appeared in the 1880 or 1900 census and he was not buried with the other family members in Brooklyn or in Jersey City. On June 6, 2011, Kevin Borland discovered more information on Sigmund Freudenberg from the 1870 census that contained both Max and Sigmund together. It was improperly transcribed at Ancestry.com but was correctly transcribed at Familysearch.com. This let him connect the Sigmund that died in 1908 to our Sigmund. He wrote: "I also found Sigmund Freudenburg's second wife Augusta, after Clara died. Sigmund had a full-sister Gertrude, and a half-sister Jennie, hence the origin of the name Jenny Gertrude. We'll have to search Philadelphia records to prove it's the same family, but I think it is, because Max is in the household in 1870 when they lived in New York, before Sigmund shows up in Philadelphia 1880. Sigmund sold life insurance. His office was across the street from the US Mint. Siegmund Freudenberg died March 23, 1908 in Manhattan. Up until then, he was living with his daughter Jennie (Freudenberg) Eidelman." Kevin then found him in the 1880 census and the 1905 census and found the names of the children from his second wife.

It would be helpful to know which part of what is now Germany your ancestor came from as Germany did not exist as a country before 1871.
Do you have an 1880 census for him? In the 1880 census, many of the entries listed the place of birth for Germans as the city state, e.g.: Hannover, Bavaria, Prussia, etc.
As you may know, most German immigrants in the 1870's came in through the port of New York.
I do have a copy of an 1880 census for a William Freudenberg living in Queens, NYC, NY. The age looks like 22, but it's difficult to read and could also be 32. Place of birth for this William F. was Prussia, and his occupation was listed as "tinsmith". If you'd like a copy, send me an e-mail as its a pdf and ancestry.com doesn't seem to accept pdf's as an attachment to posts. My e-mail is rgfreud@aol.com

Ahhh, when it rains it pours. I love getting family history like that. I am not related. My husband's ancestor, Johann Arnold HUGEBACH/HUGEBACK or "Arnold" as he was called was married to Mary Elizabeth Freudenberg (a distant relative of yours as I've devised), as I documented in the first message in this series from Feb 10. "MARY ELIZABETH3 FREDENBURG (HEINRICH2 FREUDENBERG, BERNHARD1) was born April 26, 1826, and died August 12, 1859 in Buried at Stickbold, Luzerne Co., Penn.. She married JOHANN ARNOLD HUGEBACH/HUGEBACK, son of JOHANN HUGEBACK and MARIE MUHLE. He was born September 01, 1824 in Ellenstedt, Oldenberg Province, (Lower Saxony) Germany, and died March 14, 1907 in North Washington, Chickasaw Co., Iowa." She was his first wife. My husband is decended from "Arnold" and his second wife.

Why don't you shoot me an email and I'll see whatelse I can help you with. "Lhugeback at netscape.net" I think I came across that book or excerpts back in 2000, so I have tidbits of info in my notes. I'll go back through them and see what else I can send you. Probably not a whole lot more, but I know from experience, anythink new can help.

LeAnn
Thank you for the information on the Freudenberg families. At this time I don't see a connection. Frank Conrad (Conrod) Freudenberg is the oldest person in my family at this time. Conrad married Charlotte Schilla, both from the Hennepin CO., Minneapolis. I will keep your information and maybe we can see some connection. Children are:
Albin (Alvin, George,Richard, Ann b-18 Jul 1887 & d-1969. Also William (Willie), Marie, Paul (Paule) Ernest b-15 July 1895 d-6 July 1965 from Crow Wing Co., MN.. Paule married Brenda Cambell.

Do you Really think it means jewish? berg? anyway. I googled for westphalia ship 11 may 1869 and this came up. Sorry it's so much to read. I just wanted to say in `869 on ship before or after the one leaving 28 april or that one, I saw the name Freudenberg or was it Fruedenberg. I didn't study it closely. I was looking or the arrival of Meyer or some form of it to New York from leaving 28 april. According to AIDA passenger passage record.
This is all I know about the Freudenberg family connected to my husband's Hugeback family back in Germany (and for a time, in Pennsylvania):

Descendants of Bernhard Freudenberg

Generation No. 1

1. BERNHARD1 FREUDENBERG was born Abt. 1758. He married ANNA CHRISTINE MEYER in Ellenstedt, Oldenberg Province, (Lower Saxony) Germany. I know a little more now. Heinrich (Henry) grew up in Germany; maybe in Ellenstedt. He was baptised into the Catholic Faith on March 3, 1778 at St Gorgonins; in Goldenstedt, Germany. His sponsers at baptism were Herman Myer an uncle, and Johann Henrich Kechlman an aunt. I really do not know where to go from here...does anyone have any information? Thanks! Deborah

Henry Heinzmann Jun 2004
Hermann Henrich Freudenberg was born in Ellenstette (now Ellenstedt) and was baptized at Saint Gorgonius Church in Goldenstedt on 3 March 1778.
My husband's surname is Hugeback (Hugebach/Hogebach/Hogeback are other variations). I was incorrect in saying that the Freudenberg's were his ancestors, because his ggg grandfather's first wife was a Freudenberg and my husband descended from the second wife.

When did your Freudenberg's emigrate? My gg-gf was Joachim Heinrich Johann Jacob Freudenberg, born January 11, 1848 in Westersode, (then part of the Kingdom of Hannover), in present day Germany.
BTW: In earlier centuries, there was an Amt Freudenberg in the area of what is now Bassuum, Germany. "Amt" roughly translates as "township". There are also several towns or villages in Germany named Freudenberg.
Feel free to respond via e-mail: rgfreud@aol.com if you prefer e-mail to posting.
Best regards,
Bob Freudenberg
Hillsborough, NC USA
Werner,

All of my Freudenbergs seem to be from Freiburg. The oldest one I have is Hinrich, who was born in 1600 and married Christina Borges. I have attached a portion of a family tree that was given to my mother many years ago that shows the main line of the family. If you are interested in seeing the entire tree perhaps I can send it to your e-mail. There are 14 files, and each file is about 1.5 MB. I have also posted my family tree on Roots Web. The database name is m_ackley.

Mike Ackley

Hi Freudenberg,
Yes, to my knowledge she was the daughter of Fernando Freudenberg and Virginia Leindecker. Otilia was German and was born around mid-late 19th Century (1850's to 1870's).
Unfortunately, sometimes European immigrants changed their first names to Spanish ones once they arrived to Mexico, so I do not know if these first names are German. I also know they called Fernando "Fritz" as a nickname. This also happened in the Swiss side of the family, fist we had to find their real first names before being able to continue the search. I will appreciate any help you can provide on this issue.

I have no known names so old as that. I have seen Mike Ackley's Family Chart. It is very neat!

What is your source of older church records before 1717 when Oberndorf records start... Osten/Osten area?
My most recent is:
Henry Freudenberg was born in 1848 near Stade, Germany on the Elbe River came over to USA in 1873-74. Back more generations, the Freudenberg name was on the opposite side of the Elbe River in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
I have relations named Stegemann from Schleswig-Holstein region who moved to Niedersachsen side of the Elbe River. Other surnames are Horeis, Raap and (Bremer of Cadenberge, Germany).

Read German church records back to 1717 for Oberndorf.
Looking for connections in Cadenberge, Wingst and Bu"lkau, Germany. Or maybe Stade should be Cuxhaven or another regional town name.
The surname would be Bremer.
Anna Margarethe Bremer born 2/7/1814 in Cadenberge, Germany. Father's name: Hinrich. She married in Oederquart in 1834 to Johann Freudenberg.
Have marriage date and info, as well as death in 1859 in Oederquart.
Hoping to trace her birth and generations backwards.

Another surname: Bru"mmerstede
Metta Margaretha Brummerstede; Father: Johann Bru"mmerstede Mother: Becke Meinke(n)
Town of Neulandmoor, across the Elbe River near Glu"ckstadt, but closer to Krempe.

Have direct Ottertail Co. MN connections?

Contact me via km@diers.us.
Curious to know where your Freudenberg ancestor came from and settled.

Hope we can exchange a little info.

Yes, that sounds like the same family. I have read Church records on films that I could get through LDS of the Stade area. I read and transcribed many entries that I could see a connection. I have my info on paper. My g grandfather came to Ottertail Co. Minnesota in 1873 / 74. He had a 2nd family so my line comes from the younger family. A brother came also.

I know of family we visited in 1984 who took me to see the old Freudenberg place by Oederquart, a barn shape house (animals live down below; family lives on main floor above).

Please contact me km.NOSPAM.@.nospam.diers.us

Hello,

I was poking around on the Central Europe message board and came across your message about your Freudenbergs that came from around the Elbe river north of Hamburg. My mother is a Freudenberg, and her family came from Freiburg on the Elbe, which is north of Hamburg. Wondering if we're researching the same family? My g-g grandfather came to Milwaukee, WI in 1866. I have a hand-drawn family tree that goes back to 1600 that has hundreds of Freudenbergs on it. Would like to comapre notes and see if we're looking for the same family.

Mike Ackley

Freudenberg (1896-1988). Selma Louise Freudenberg (1920- ) says: "she had a tragic love affair, then never married. She may have had some psychological problems. She went into a decline after losing her job and never recovered. Once Ralph Herman Freudenberg I (1931-1992) made a prank phone call to Clara by disguising his voice and asking her for a date. She got dressed up and of course no one showed up. Maria Elizabeth Winblad (1895-1987), the estranged wife of her brother, Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968), took care of Clara for a while, but found her to be too sarcastic and she ended up living with her brother's house in Keansburg." She died in Keansburg, New Jersey of a heart attack. Her obituary appeared in the Jersey Journal on Wednesday, November 04, 1959 and reads as follows: "Freudenberg - Clara, on November 2, 1959, of 136 Cottage Street, Jersey City; sister of Arthur, Richard, Ralph, and Mrs. Grace Sanford.
