Beste Petra,

Groets,

Ruud

I can send you a PFD file with old foto's from around 1910 with the family of Freund.
But I only can send it direct to your emailadress. I try to send it as a attach file. If this does not work, my emailadress is petra.50@live.nl
But it does not work

Coenra(a)d Freund was born in Rotterdam at 12-09-1877.
He married Algonda Alberdina Maria Kock in Rotterdam at 06-05-1903. She was 23 years old at that time, she was born in Delfshaven.
The parents of Coenraad were Coenraad Freund and Cornelia Elizabeth Hornon. His father died in Rotterdam at 08-12-1914.
The death of his mother is unknown to me, but is part of my question to you: we suppose after 08-12-1914 Cornelia Elizabeth Hornon left Rotterdam and settled in Amerika too. Do you have any information about this...?

With any response, please mail to a3aan45@hotmail.com.

Ruud

Fred,

Jacob Fruend
Cincinnati, The Queen City, Vol. 3;
published in 1912
Transcribed by: Michelle Leslie

Jacob Freund is at the head of two important industrial concerns at Winton Place, Cincinnati, -- the Jacob Freund Roofing Company and the Cincinnati Roofing, Tile & Terra Cotta Company. He is one of the pioneers in the roofing business, having been identified therewith as a workman and manufacturer for forty-five years. His birth occurred in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the 15th of January, 1854, his father being Leonard Freund, a native of Germany. He attended school until thirteen years of age and then learned the roofing business, first working as a journeyman and later acting as superintendent for different concern of Cincinnati. In 1879 he became a partner in the old firm of James Hunter & Company on Central avenue, which in 1883 was succeeded by the Jacob Freund Roofing Company. On the 8th of March 1892, the Jacob Freund Roofing Company was incorporated with a capital stock of forty thousand dollars, while in 1896 the Cincinnati Roofing, Tile and Terra Cotta Company was established and incorporated with a capital stock of fifty thousand dollars. Jacob Freund is the president and general manager of both these important industries and has developed an extensive and profitable business in the manufacture of galvanized cornices, ornamental tile and slate roofing. About one hundred men are employed in the two plants. The manufacture of tile roofing, was begun in 1897. The plant of the Jacob Freund Roofing Company was destroyed by fire in May 1909, and a larger and more commodious structure was erected on its site. Our subject has earned for himself an enviable reputation as a careful man of business and in his dealings is known for his prompt and honorable methods, which have won him the deserved and unbounded confidence of his fellowmen.
In 1870 Mr. Freund was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Pancera, by whom he has one daughter, now Mrs. Magdalene Meyer of Cincinnati. Fraternally he is identified with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He has spent his entire life in Cincinnati and has long been numbered among its prosperous and representative citizens.

I haven't been able to connect him to my Freund family.

Betty

Re: Louis Freund

I have a collection of drawings and woodcuts that Louis Freund created. I have a copy of a biography written about Louis Freund. Jerry Bedford because the trustee of Louis Freund's estate help distribute Freund's work throughout museums and universities and religious institutions across the country. I have been able to confirm that many notable musuems have collected his work, including the Smithsonian, Arkansas Arts Center, Nelson-Adkins Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Michael Carlos Museum in Atlanta, Springfield Art Museum, Historic Arkansas Museum, Eureak Springs Historical Museum. His works are also in many university collections where he either studied or taught including Princeton University, Hendrix College, University of Arkansas Little Rock, University of Arkansas Fayetteville, and Stetson University in Florida.
Early on, Freund was a portraitist. Many of his portraits have survived.
He painted at least six murals as an artist for the Works Progress Administration. Some of the original murals were in Pocahontas, Harrison, Fort Chaffee, Arkansas.
He and Elsie are historically credited with founding the artist colony that has developed in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Freund was friends with other notable Regionalism artist like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood during his life time. This movement focused on the value of art in the area surrounding day to day life. He was also close friends with John Gould Fletcher, a renowned poet.
Perhaps Freund's most stunning accomplishments were antiwar pieces. The Red Laugh of War, Grief, Shape of Things to Come are excellent, sought-after examples of his protest work. The Red Laugh of War at the Historic Arkansas Museum is a priceless piece. Freund was a conscientious objector during World War II.
Later in life he became enamoured with religious art. Some large examples of his work, both entitled Alpha and Omega, can be viewed at First Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Village both in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The value of his life's work cannot be overstated as it touched on so many themes that remain politically powerful today.

Re: Freunds in Alsace-Lorraine, France

Hello Ms. Walker,

I have been doing some research on my husband's side of the family and came across your blog on the message board. I know it's been awhile since you asked your question so I am not sure if you need any info yet. I am also not sure if your Freund family is of the same connection as my husband's.

My husband's family came from Alsace-Lorraine specifically the Bas-Rhin area. Towns/villages include Kurtzenhouse, Weitbruch and Gries. The verified farthest I am able to to back is Pancratius Freund who was born June 30,1749. He married Marie Frauli (Frauly). I can not verify if he married an Elisabetha Ohl before Marie. I have info that confirms a Pancratius married Elisabetha but again I am not sure it is the same Pancratius in my husband's family. It appears that they may be the same, but with everyone naming their children after family members it gets fuzzy. If they are indeed the same Pancratius then his father was Lienhard Freund (may have been called Georgii) and was married to Margaretha Gras(sin). Lienhard's parents were Peter Freund Mathis & Margaretha Hugel wife #1 and Eva Schmidt wife #2. Peter's father was Georg Mathis & Barbara Hartnagel. Georg's father was named Georg Mathis who was born in 1590.

Most of this info was obtained on Genealogie.com (which is all in French) from other family trees. I did obtain some info from the civil records from that site.

Barb Freund

Please Help Me!
I'm looking for information on my g-fathers family. My g-father George William Freund was born somewhere in Illinois possibly Chicago in 1891 DOB is September 10.
His parents were George Freund and Rose (surname unknown). He had four other siblings 2 brothers and 2 sisters
Philip, Fred, Rose (Rosa) and Catherine. Philip and Rose were adopted by the EDDY family and were circus performers with Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus. Philip also owned and played a Stradivarius violin. I believe he played the violin before the crown heads of Europe.
My g-father was adopted by the John ROTT family of North Dakota as a small child and took back the name Freund when he came of legal age.
Rose married into the Fournier family and lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut until her death in the early to mid 1960's.
Philip passed away in 1957 at the time of his death he was living in Indianapolis, Indiana and had a chain of restaurants.
Cathryn married into the Richardson family.
The only information known about his brother Fred is he lived in California and was supposedly an actor and had a daughter Diamond born in 1924 is San Joaquin County, CA.
George married Magdalena (Maggie) Rosina Rott on January 31, 1918 and were married for 58 years until her death in Omak, Washington in September 1976.
George passed away in October 1978 in Omak, Washington
George and Maggie had 13 children 6 of them preceded them in death.

Catherine Freund was my great-great grandmother. She immigrated to the US in 1890 along with her brother, Conrad, from Germany. It seems that she traveled directly to Michigan. She married Henry Schmiedeknecht in 1892.

The question I am trying to answer is "What brought her to Michigan?" On the passenger list for her departure from Germany, it listed "Montague" as her destination. I take this to mean Montague, Muskegon County, Michigan. I further assume this means she knew someone in Montague.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Steve Westbrook

I met Louis and Elsie in Eureka Springs in the mid 1980s
I own three of Louis' paintings and one watercolor of
Elsies. She also made jewelry. They were a wonderful
couple, whe would go out for lunch and talk about everything from reincarnation to the their love for the
Southwest. He was a muralist for the WPA. A art teacher
and I believe the founder of the local art colony. I bought
my first painting from a gallery and subsequently directly
from him. But it took several years of "hanging" with
him to convince him to sell me his favorite paintings.
My paintings of are Sylamore Ferry, Osage and Eureka Springs. For a period he painted religous themes. He was
a religious man, and she was very quiet , a wonderful person

What little info I have is this:

Marion Kathryn Freund married Mervin Leslie Schoenholz.
Mervin's parents were John Frederick & Edna Viola (Arnold) Schoenholz. Edna was my grandfather's sister. I don't know if Edna & John divorced or he died, but she married again. I have found Edna and a daughter Lois in a 1930 Davenport, Iowa census and and another son & daughter living with other families in Illinois in 1930. The son, Gerald, was living with his Schoenholz grandparents.

Thanks for the help,
Sue

It also show 2 marriages, Nn Schoenholtz & William Herrmann. Looks like my spelling may be a question mark but, I can provide a bit more if you interested.
I don't have these names in my database, however much more info about Freund's can be found in the McHenry library. Do you live nearby? Do you have dates or more info for these two people, a time period to start searching?

Seeking information on or from the family of Heinrich Freund. Heinrich's sister, Paula, was my grandmother. She was born in 1880 so I believe he would have been born earlier then that. A family member thought that Heinrich had gone to Isreal after WWII. I am hoping a member of his family will see this message and contact me. I'd love to exchange family information.

Seeking information on my grandmother's family. She was born in Austria 10 Dec 1880. Paula's mother was a Fleisher. Paula immigrated to the US in 1899. She married Leo Stern. They lived in New Jersy all their married life - they lived in Newark and Montclair, NJ.
Paula had a brother, Edmund Freund who died in Oakland, CA in 1927. She also had a sister, Rosa who married an Oswald who, along with their son was killed in bombings during WWII. If any of the above sounds like these people might be members of your family I would appreciate hearing from you. I know someone who could translate from German if your response is not in English. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Hi Judy,
I hadn't been looking lately, but recently met a man with the surname Liechti. It is apparently very common here in Switzerland, so I think he found it unlikely when I told him we might be related! But it was a good reminder that I should pick up the search closer to St. Gallen and see if I can find any of our relations. As I haven't been on this site much, I've forgotten how to see our family tree and figure out where to start looking. How lucky that you've been so active! Hope to find a few links --
Nancy (Freund)Fraser
