Re: FREY ancestors from Eich or Hamm

I found your query rather late, sorry, but if you are still interested, I´ve got some information: your ancestor Rudolf FREY, born 1st of March 1795 in Hamm/Rheinhessen/Germany, is the greatgrandfather of my grandfather Jakob FREY (born August 20, 1906 in Koptiewka/Ukraine, died 1st of October 1977 in Dienheim/Rheinhessen/Germany). The son of Rudolf FREY (born 1795), Jakob FREY (born 2nd of May 1840 in Hamm/Rheinhessen, died May 6, 1916 in Koptiewka/Ukraine), was a brother of Rudolf FREY (born March 13, 1843 in Hamm/Rheinhessen, died 1914 in Koptjewka/Ukraine), my gggrandfather.

Hamm/Rheinhessen, now also called Hamm am Rhein, not to be mixed up with Hamm in Westfalia, is located near the river Rhine and 3 kilometers from Eich/Rheinhessen. Both villages, Hamm and Eich, belonged from 1816 to 1945 to the Province Rheinhessen, which belonged to the State Hessen. The area is still known as Rheinhessen. Since 1945 Eich/Rheinhessen and Hamm/Rheinhessen belong to the german Federal Land Rheinland-Pfalz. Towns near are Worms, Mainz and Darmstadt.

Rudolf FREY (born 1795) left Hamm/Rheinhessen in the middle of the 19th century (probably in the 1840s) to settle in the Ukraine (at that time called Southern Russia, in german: Südrussland or Schwarzmeergebiet), together with his wife Elisabeth(a) née BIECHI (born July 19, 1806), his son Jakob (born 1840) and a lot of relatives (known first names: Adam, Georg, Jakob, Johann, Johannes and Valentin FREY, probably brothers and nephews to Rudolf FREY). They all first headed to the so called Grunau or Mariupol District, also known as Planer Kolonien, some of them as day laborers to the famous estate Ascania Nova of the Falz-Fein Family, afterwards to the german colonies along the river Molotschnaja, also called Molotschna Colony or Prishib District.

Jakob FREY (born 1840) was as a brewer by trade, Rudolf (born 1843)was a blacksmith. They both worked for more than 10 years in the german-russian settlements, Jakob possibly in the large german Brewery BILLE (from 1896 BASENER) in the seaport Taganrog in the Rostov Oblast on shore of the Sea of Azov. Jakob FREY then bought a farmstead, probably in one of the Molotschna settlements. We do not know many biographical facts, as the Soviet military and local authorities burned all parish and community registers in order to suppress evidence for the awful famine 1931-1932 and the persecution under Stalin.

Later, not before 1877, probably in the late 1880s, the three brothers Jakob FREY (born 1840), Rudolf FREY (born 1843)and Adam FREY (birthday unknown), headed to the north of the Grunau District, where they acquired a huge estate near the village Koptiewka (russian: Коптево/Koptevo, ukrainian now Коптева or Коптеве /Kopteva or Kopteve), the german part of the village for some decades called Reinfeld (latitude: 48.38 North, longitude: 37.37 East), now in the Donets´ka Oblast/Ukraine, in the past in the Stalino Oblast and the Bachmut (Artemivsk) county (Kreis Bachmut), not to be mixed up with the countless other russian or ukrainian settlements named Koptevka, Koptevo or similar, and also not to be mixed up with the better known german settlements in Ukraine: Reinfeld west of the Molotschna District and Reinfeld in the Northwest of the Chortitza Colony.

In Koptjewka the FREY brothers Jakob, Rudolf and Adam owned over 7 square miles of farming land including quartz and coal beds and clay pits. Jakob FREY (b 1840) owned 1.7 square miles. Each of the three brothers and some of their sons lived with their families in their own farm houses spread over the estatet. The house of Jakob FREY (born 1840) was in the very East of the estate, about 4 kilometers east of the russian/ukrainian village Koptevka. In the attachments you will find a photography of this farm house, obviously taken during a funeral feast, probably on the occasion of the funeral of Jakob FREY´s wife.

As I am told by one of his great-granddaughters, Jakob FREY (born 1840) tried several times to remigrate to Germany. For this purpose he travelled three times to Germany, accompanied by his daughter Klara. First he tried to buy an estate near Worms/Rheinhessen, years later he considered to establish himself in East Prussia. Both attempts failed because for that he needed the support of at least two of his sons, but his sons found the soil to bad in Germany (in comparison to the very fertile black soil in Ukraine.

Jakob FREY (born 1840) left behind six sons and two daughters, among them Jakob (later living in Alsheim/Germany), Georg (later living in Eich/Germany), Elisabeth (née Gugenheimer), Klara, Rudolf (the early departed father of Eugen, Waldemar und Emma FREY née BEYERLE) and Johannes FREY (the father of Arthur FREY, who emigrated first from Ukraine to Alsheim/Germany and then, together with his sons Harry and Otto, to the United States).

DIETMAR FREY

I am also researching Baschi Frey and your info on Anna Schmidt helped greatly. I also get perplexed when another researcher enters obviously wrong data. I have noted the name Barbli, and am going back over my notes, as I remember that name, but not as a daughter of Baschi and Anna. The daughter came a generation later as a child born to Mathis Kaiser and Magdalena Frey, (1568-1638), and was married in September 1584 in Reitnau, Aargau, Switzerland. Her name was spelled Barbli Keiser and would fit very close to a 1605 marriage to Hans Meyer.

Hi Justin,
Do you have any idea how this trunk came into your possession? Benjamin's father was Henry (Heinrich) Frey, born in Germany in July 1857. His mother was Elise Lydia Niethaummer, born about 1858 in Michigan. Henry married a second time to Etta Belle Richards, born May 1874 in Michigan.
After Benjamin married my cousin Hazel, they moved to Milwaukee and had three sons, Arnold Wesley, Howard Keith, and Robert B.
I would love to know any information you have on this family.
David

BASCHI FREY OF ZURICH, SWITZERLAND - b. 1595

I'm trying to straighten out the ch. of Baschi FREY, son of Heinrich FREY and Anna Catharina BUESS, who m. Anna SCHMIDT. This couple had several ch., one of whom was Barbel FREY, who would m.1605 to Hans MEYER, also of Zurich, who was b. in 1581. The MEYER family are ancestors of the LINGS, early settlers of Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. My problem is that most sources (there are very many) give Baschi and Anna four ch. (including Barbel), whose birthdates are 1495, 1514, 1580-84 and 1624. Aside from the fact that these dates mean the sibling group spanned about 130 years, three of them predate the birth of their father (how can people post such nonsense?). Does anyone have the correct information for this family group? I especially need the correct birthdate for dau. Barbel, and, as is likely, a corrected birthdate for her parents. Any help with this mess would be very much appreciated.

Frey family in Nuckolls Nebraska

I am interested in the Edward Frey family who settled in the Mt Clare area around 1897. Their sons Richard (my great grandfather), John and Joseph Frey all owned land north west of Mt. Clare (as of 1917). Richard Frey married Minnie Wehrly in 1901 and raised a family there. Of their 12 children, only 9 reached adulthood - Matilda, Freida, Cecilia, Herman, Mary, Englebert, Elizabeth (Bette) (my grandmother) and Andy.

If you are also researching this family or have any information on any of the people listed above, I would enjoy hearing from you. I am very willing to share what ever information I have.

Thanks,
Mary
I am looking for information on the Frey family. My husband's great grandmother was Leona Frey and she married Edmund Beyer Sr. My husband's grandfather passed away in 2009 and we have a bunch of pictures and obituaries and memorial cards. I found a memorial card for a Charles J Frey born July 27, 1892 and died December 15, 1969. I believe I have found him in the 1900 to 1930 US census and I believe this to be Leona's brother. If anybody can help me with this family it would be greatly appreciated. Regarding Catherine's death date, I believe that would have to be in the 1880s; in the 1900 census, Jacob H. Long is living as a widower with his daughter Sarah and her husband John C.

Some years ago someone gave me these names for the children of Talton/Tarlton Watson, b. 1819, NC, and Sarah Frey, b. 1819, TN:

Frances Ann Frey
Almeda
Sarah Jane
Thomas J.
Luvina
George Washington
Albert F.
Hubert E.

I can find record of Frances, Almeda, Sarah Jane, and Albert by name. I can find initials T. J., L., M, and G.W. It would appear that many of these children died young. Talton was dead by 1870, and it appears he died while serving in the Confederate Army.

Does anyone have a source for the names of these children, such as a family Bible, other than public records?

Your Charles Frey may possibly have been the same one who married Florence May Rhodes in Macoupin County, Illinois about 1895. In tracing Florence, I found her on 1900 census as wife of Charles Frey and paperwork in 1904 probate of her father, George Washington Rhodes indicates she is wife of Charles Frey. Can't find her on or after 1910 census, possibly they divorced and she remarried, or she died. Still have nothing to tie the Charles Frey in Oregon in 1910 and after who is married to Helen to the one who was married to my Florence. Do you have anything new since your last posting?
Roberta
I am not sure, however, there is a Vincent Frey living in Chicago, Cook County in the 1900 census. Although, he says he is from Switzerland and immigrated a bit earlier than the date you gave for Vincenz, he is a muscian and I believe two of his sons are listed as musicians. There is also an Otto Frey living next door from Switzerland who gives his occupation as musician.
My g-g-grandfather immigrated from Bavaria in 1843. On most documents he says he is from Saxony, but on his naturalization papers he states he swore alleigence to King Ludwig who was the king of Bavaria. Don't know why he perferred to be from Saxony. I do know that they were Catholic and at that time ninety-five percent of the Barvarians were Protestants.
Could be for some reason your guy chose not to be identified as being from Bavaria as did my grandfather.
Do you know what his destination was? It was always listed on the ships passenger log.
Re: JOHN GEORGE FREY, BADEN, INDIANA, COLORADO AND OTHER

My name is Dennis Frey. My great great grandfather's name was John George Frey. His son Henry, born in 1848 in Clark Co. Indiana is my great grandfather. I have been doing research to find information on John George. I have a copy of the 1860 Census from Clark Co. Indiana that shows him with a wife Mary, sone Jacob and daughter Mary living with them along with my great grandfather Henry. Henry was 10 years old at the time of the census and it shows he was born in Clark Co. Indiana. All the others were born in Baden, Germany. At the time of the Census, 1860, John George was 53, wife Mary was 56, son Jacob was 26 and daughter Mary was 24. It seems impossible that if Henry was 10 years old that wife Mary could not have given birth at age 46 so not sure if wife Mary is the mother of Henry and he remarried??
I would be happy to exchange any information I have with you. I also have had difficulty in finding any additional information on John George. I have been through all of the Germans to America books and was unable to find a family unit with John/Johann George/Georg that immigrated. Please let me know if this is of any help. I'd love to find out more information on this relative as I have run into a blind alley on this one.

Thanks,

Dennis Frey

Re: Rebecca FREY (no dates) md. Andrias MININGER (b.1725-d.1785)

Would you happen to know whether Andrias and Rebecca were also the parents of Samuel Mininger (1778-1866). He and his wife Maria/Mary lived in Quakertown and are buried at Zionhill Evangelical Lutheran Church. I think it's likely that Andrias was his father but have never seen anything that says so directly.
