Recently read your post. My gggrandparents lived in Hamburg. Meta Hedemann Friedrichs was born in 1840. I am not sure of his name, but possibly and probably, it was Johann Friedrichs. Son named Friedrich (Fritz) born in 1865 in Hamberg. Came to US around 1880. About 1885 moved to Summerville, South Carolina, and worked in Charleston, SC. He married Anna Catherina Catrina Hulseburg, born in Germany in 1865 in Hamburg, confirmed in 1865, and moved to US, possibly under another named with another family. They were married in 1889 in Charleston, SC

Bertha & sister Sophie Friedrich (w/fmly), Ship: Bremen

I've posted previously, looking for anyone who may know this family - hooking into the thread titled "Sophie" - and others seem to have found each other but no one recognized my ancestor: Bertha Fredericks/Friedrichs, married John R. Blake before 1900 (in NB, KS, or MO). All I knew about her before beginning to search was that she was born in Germany and had a sister named Sophie.

My earliest info on her is in the 1900 census, married 18 years (abt 1882), with 7 children, the eldest (Fred) was born in Nebraska abt Feb 1883 - and that she immigrated in 1870.

Bertha is my great-grandmother - and I have always wanted to know more about her and her family - siblings, parents, where born, etc. Can anyone help me??

Unsure if the following is the exact family I need but it's where I've started. Found in "Germans to America" (1870):: Friedrich Friedrichs, age 47, farmer; Hanover, Germany to U.S., SHIP: Bremen - from Bremen to NY, Arrived: 4/1/1870 -with: Wilhelmine, age 46; Wilhelmine, age 18; Auguste, age 16; Wilhelm, age 15; Sophie, age 12; Bertha, age 7; Emil, age 7 mos.

Thanks for any connection that might be made...
Nancy Blake Thompson

Don't know if there is a connection here or not. My ggf was born in 1865 in Bremen. I believe his father's name was Johann Friedrichs and his mother's maiden name was Meta Hedermann. His name was Friedrich (Fritz) Friedrichs. I believe he came to NY in his teens. He moved to Summerville, SC and in 1869 married Anna Catherina Christina Holseberg in CHarleston, SC. Anna came to the US sometime between Apr 1884 and Dec 1889. If you see any connection, please let me know. Fritz had a brother name Johann, sisters Gesine and Dora. I believe someone married a Schmitz, but am unable to find that info at this time.
My sister, Kathy Launchbaugh, and Sharon Wasserman Skelton both have family research. Sharon has information posted on the Wasserman board.
Happy to see that name - and hope for a connection. I've been searching for family info. (parents/siblings) on my great-grandmother - Bertha (unsure of the exact spelling of the last name, several variations) - whose family immigrated to the U.S. (Nebraska) from Germany in 1870 - per a 1900 census listing where I found her married to John R. Blake (possibly her second husband) with children in Missouri (the oldest was born in 1993 in Nebraska). All I knew when I started was that she came with her family from Germany to Nebraska - and had (at least) a sister named Sophie.

Where in the U.S. did your great-grandmother live? His parents were William Meier Friedrichs and Agnes E. Griffin. I beleive his father died at his own mothers funeral on February 22, 1938 in Dorchester county, South Carolina. His mother remarried and became Agnes Levi. She later moved to Houston, Texas. William had a half brother named Hovey Levi. William had a cousin named Frederick M. Friedrichs who lived in Charleston, South Carolina. Frederick was born on March 20,1924 and died on August 5,1988. Frederick had a daughter named Myra who in the late 70's still lived in South Carolina. William had 2 aunts who lived in Greenville, South Carolina. I do not know their actual names. They were called She-She and Dollie. I would greatly appreciate any assistance that anyone can give me in researching this family tree.

Re: Sophie Friedrichs

I am so glad to see this post!! Sophie Friedrichs is my great-grandmother also! I am the granddaughter of Sophie's daughter, Evelyn. My name is Robyn (Packer) Brown. The only information I have on Sophie, is that her birthday is 8 FEB 1896. She came alone to the US via Ellis Island on the SS George Washington on June 10, 1912. You can find that info on www.ellisisland.com. She married Ernest Wasserman and I believe died in Kansas. My grandmother, Evelyn, was raised on a farm in Hoxie, Kansas, so I am thinking that is where Sophie died. I am having a HORRIBLE time finding information on Sophie and Ernest. I would love to keep in touch with you and hear your relation to them.

It's a long shot, but was his father's name Peter Friedrichs? Did he have a sister or cousin Maria Luisa, born 27.10.1850? If so, I may be able to offer some more info. I am researching Friedrichs in the Nordrhein-Westfalen area myself. Koeln, Duisburg, Duesseldorf.

Friedrichs in Germany

Hi everybody!

I am looking for more information on Johann Friedrichs, his wife Margaretha Maria Schmitz, their ancestors and their descendants. My wife is their great-great granddaughter. Johann was born about 1869 in Germany, and Margaretha Schmitz was born on February 5th, but we don't know what year. Their daughter, Johanna Katharina Friedrichs, was my wife's great-grandmother. Johanna K. Friedrichs was born in 1901 in Köln-Nippes (Köln is also spelled Koeln or Cologne), Germany. She married Karl Friedrich Saynsche in Coblenz (now spelled Koblenz) in 1921. He died in 1946 in Berlin, and she died in Berlin in 1976. They had 4 children:
1. Karl Ernst Ludwig Saynsche - b. 12-22-1921 in Koblenz,
2. Heribert Johannes Saynsche - b. 3-31-1925 in Koblenz,
3. Johanna Margaretha Hannelore (Hannelore) Saynsche - b.
11-13-1928 in Koblenz-Lützel, and
4. Marianne Erika Saynsche - b. 11-26-1940 in Berlin.

Hannelore´s married name is Mosiniak, and Marianne´s married name is Oelmann.

If you are related to the Friedrichs, Saynsches, Schmitzs, etc. or know somebody who is, it would be great to hear from you. Falls Sie lieber auf deutsch schreiben wollen, kann ich Deutsch.

Take care,
Russ Lentz
Tallahassee, Florida, USA

I was just browsing through Ancestry.com and came upon your message. What a small world. I have a niece, Crystal Friedrichs who livest at Anthon, Iowa (where I was raised). I also have an older brother named Terry Friedrichs. My father was Merril Friedrichs who was the son of John Friedrichs. My grandfather came from New Kenzlin, Germany as a small boy. He came to the United Stateswith his mother and other brothers and sisters. Their father was in the military and never left Germany, we do not know if he was killed in the war or not. My Grandfather raised his family near Arco, Minnesota and is buried in Tyler, Minnesota. My grandfather's brothers did not all spell their name the same way, some took the "s" off the end, so there is a dispute as to what the correct spelling is.

Hope you find who you are looking for.
