A search of Kent place-names shows a Sittingbourne, but not a Littingbourne. Also, Deptford is now a part of Greater London - it being on the Thames only about 6 miles from Centre London. Sittingbourne and Deptford are not far apart.

I discovered Marshell Friends (1782-1802) Littingbourne, Kent, England. Died of Cholera when James Friends (1800-1873) was 2 years. Marshell married to Elizath Friends (1783-0?) Deptford, Kent, England. Elizath remarred to James H Wheeler. I hope that will help to search bit further back 1782.

This reply is starting to diverge from the Friend's line, but Elon Friends was my great uncle. Both John Fletcher Cleveland and Mary Tillinghast have very extensive documented ancestries. Tillinghast goes back to Edward I and has such notables in the US as Roger Williams and Gen. Lamb (Rev. War). Cleveland ties into Cotton with some distinguished ancestors. See the Alton L. Gilbert family tree on ancestry.com. Also, I have Jerusha's (Ruea's) family bible and have scanned the vital records and can furnish - contact me at alton_gilbert(at)hotmail.com.

I am actually a "Friends" myself and I too, cannot find any history beyond James Friends and his wife Polly Millard. For my daughter's project I chose to trace the origin of Jerusha Tillinghast Cleveland, that married Jay Friends. (Son of James' son, Samuel) She has quite a prominent family of Tillinghasts in RI orginating from England. I am getting lost trying to make her connection because apparently she was named after "Jerusha Tillinghast" that had passed shortly after birth!
John Fletcher Cleveland and Mary Tillinghast were her parents...
I do need to research further, but it does get aggravating!! Any history on the Friends origin would be awesome if you do happen upon it!!
Jerusha's son, Elon Friends, was my Grandfather.

Alton
I'm not sure if there any familie emmigrat to the US. It is possible because so fare we know it was a normale familie (between 9 and 12 children) for that time in Europe(± 1800). I don't if there any children emmigrat in that period to the US. Again it is possible because the lived in Rotterdam so it was quit easy to get on a ship. Just one thing mine familie tree start on 1832 before that time it was speld with a V. This by mistake because they saw the V for an F. Dont't forget in that period it was ruring in Europe whit the Napolionic things. The famelie tree with a V goes back I thoughed about to the late 1600.
Hopefully you have something whit this other whise I hear from you when you are intrest.
m.friends@zonnet.nl
Regards,
Mathieu
Mathieu,

Does you family tree go back before 1800? Are there any Friends emmigrants to the US in the tree? Our big mystery is the parentage of James Friends born in 1800.

Regards,

Alton

I'm afraid I've posted pretty much all I know about the Friends line. How your Grandmother fits in, I don't know. I've made no further progess on how the family name came into being, or where James Friends came from.

However, since I noticed your name is Plank, I have a lot on information about the Plank lines, if Lovell Plank is in your line. This is a strong Mayflower line on both sides of the family.
