Fries/Friess/ Freeze/Freese

I am writing in hopes that some one who's surname is Fries can help this surname Freeze. I have been doing research for about 12 yrs and I have found out that my surname Freeze has not always been spelled that way. My gggrandfather Daniel Fries b.1786 Shanandoah and wife Catherine Pence married in 1815 in Sanandoah changed his name when they moved to Ohio and spelled it Freeze, living their a few years moving to Indiana and found their spelling now a Freese. If your surname is Fries,I understand those who live in Virgina pronounce it as if you are saying Freeze, and we in Ohio when saying Fries are pronouncing it as that, Fries as saying frying something. Whatever the case being,I am asking if you have any info. on this Daniel Fries as to who his parents were. There is info.that a Russell Pence has made it pubic that Daniel Fries and Catherine Pence both born and maried in Shenandoah but when asked for the source there seems to be none. Would you not think his parents were present??? This is my question, WHO WERE HIS PARENTS etc???? does any one know? I am willing to pay for REAL INFO. Write me Mel Freeze e-address,iceman32@comcast.net THANKS mel

This photo is of a group of soldiers in France during WWII. The 3rd man from the left on the front row standing is my husband's grandfather James Sisko. I am so grateful to him for having written on the back of this photo the last name of every man....as follows:

**********************************
Rear Row. L.To.R.
Ratliff, Gudger, Redmon, Collins, Coffman, Brown, Bonza, Wilson
"Front. Row Standing"
Fries, Jilik, me [this would be James Sisko], Johnson, James, Burdette, Gibbons.
Sitting
Virrouso, Purdue, Olfano, Eppinger, Halor, Hunter, Dillon, Hancock, Prettitore.
Le Havre France
March 1945
**********************************************
I certainly hope this helps bring life to the genealogical collection of all of the men in the photo. If you might know who any of these men are including Mr. Fries, please contact me by replying or email. Thanks, Amber Harkins
Good morning! The old stone church event is held the 3rd Saturday in August, beginning about noon. A covered dish is always appreciated. The old stone church is located near White Hall, just off of Rt 522 North, about 5 miles from Winchester. Let me know if you receive this reply and if I can be of further help. Regards, John

Mardella:
I'm not sure if we have talked before or not... but your post caught my attention because it mentions Simon, son of Michael, and brother of Anna Marie.

I am related to Simon Friess, son of Johan Michael Friess and Maria Charlotta Fechter. They came from Germany. Simon had a sister named Anna Marie...

ANNA MARIA FRIESS was born Abt. 1745 in Berks County, Pennsylvania,
and died Aft. 1812 in probably Goshen Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
She married CHRISTOPHER LENHART Abt. 1764 in Berks County,
Pennsylvania, son of JOHANN LENHARDT and MARIA MARGARETHA. He was born Abt. 1740 in Germany, and is believe to have died 1812 in Goshen Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Could these be your Simon, Michael and Anna Maria?
Ray Friess rayfrijr@msn.com
Jacob Fries was born in 1713 in Friesland, Germany. His wife is unknown. Their son Jacob was born in 1736. It is not known why they came to America. Jacob (1713) and his family immigrated to America and settled in Pennsylvania in 1738 near Buck Co., Pa. Bucks County was one of the three original counties in Pennsylvania. It was named by William Penn in 1682 after Buckinghamshire England, the county where he lived and his family originated from. Bucks is the abbreviation for Buckinghamshire, and both names are used interchangeably in England. Penn's home, Pennsbury Manor, is located within Bucks County.

Is this your family?

Re: FRIES from Germany to PA 1898

FWIW - My ancestor Robert C. Fries / Frees (b 1825 Germany) came to Pennsylvania abt 1860 via Philadelphia. By 1870 he had settled in Montgomery County PA where he became a well known printer / publisher. So far I have been able to identify one sibling - an August Fries / Frees (b abt 1832 Germany). In 1880 he is living in Philadelphia and is working as a printer.

I put this information out there to see if it might connect in. Often family came to the country and settled where other family (cousins, siblings etc) were.

Pls let me know if this helps. Best Regards, Chris

Are you related to John (Johann) Fries?

FRIES, JOHN M. (ca. 1818-?). John (Johann) Fries, early architect and builder, was born in Bavaria, the son of Johann Moritz Fries, a veteran of Napoleon's Russian campaign. While he was still a youth, his family immigrated to America and settled in Dayton, Ohio. In 1846 Fries moved to Texas. The ship on which he was traveling was wrecked near Galveston, and he spent a brief time in the area before moving on to San Antonio around 1847. There Fries, trained as an architect and builder, settled and opened a practice. Over the course of the next several decades he designed and constructed numerous buildings and residences in and around San Antonio, including the City Market House (1858; razed 1926), the Menger Hotel (1859), the James Vance house (1859; razed), and the Nat Lewis and Tunstall homes. Fries also served as a contractor for the construction of the State House in Austin in 1854. In addition, he is believed to have been responsible, along with Edwin Burr Babbitt, for rebuilding the badly damaged Alamo in 1850, when its famous curved parapet was added.

Fries was active among San Antonio Germans and was engaged in many civic projects. He was married to Salome Enderle, a native of Germany from Castroville. Their son, Louis Fries, later became an official in the Pierce Fordyce Oil Association. Around 1860 Fries moved to Gillespie County, where he and his son operated a sheep ranch. In 1870 he was living in Maverick County; he apparently died before 1880.

Curious Connection

After reading a bit on the Fries “Rebellion” and tracing my ancestry back to a roadblock, I have found a curious connection.

During the “Rebellion”, the Michel Bobst was a tax assessor. The community put a boycott on other Bobst family ventures.

My ggg-grandfater, Joseph Fries was born in Bucks County PA May 4, 1817. His father is John Fries (likely Jr) born in PA as well and living in Richland during the 1820 censes.

Sometime during the 1820’s, John picked up and moved to New Lisbon, Columbiana, Ohio then to Marion County by 1840 where he died in 1846 in the home of his son-in-law Noah Leatherberry. Noah married John’s dauther Mary Ann b. 1812 in PA.

In 1856, Joseph and wife America (Mohn) b. 1830 and his brother John (jr) and wife Anna (Willman) moved to the Nebraska Territory where they were the some of the first settlers.

Now the interesting part is that Joseph travelled out with Christian Bobst and his son Gorge T. Bobst. John and Joseph’s brother George settled in Nebraska a bit later financing John Fries’ Mill in Dubois Nebraska

So, what is my roadblock? Well as strong as the evidence is that John Fries buried in Marion County, Ohio is the son of John Fries of the “Rebellion” I have found not real proof.

So, the question is in 1783 and 1817, how may Fries’ lived in Bucks County PA? Is there any account to the children of John Fries of the “Rebellion” to disqualify my John Fries?

John Fries was married to an Elizabeth, both are buried in the Old Marion Cemetery. Any info on her madden name?

If John in Marion is not the son of John of the “Rebellion”, who is he?

Thanks,
Rod Fries
I think i found them burried in Old Marion Cemetery in Ohio. I am farily confident that they had Mary Ann, John and Joseph... Probably more...

The obit said John Fries died in the home of is son-in-law Noah M Leatherberry. Noah was married to Mary Ann. After John's death, they moved to Nemaha Kansas not too far from where John and Joseph moved to in Pawnee county Nebraska.

In the history books, it mentions a Jacob, Henry and George. I could not hid an support for these syblings other than come contradicting articles.

What do you have on the marriage of John and Elizabeth? I could not find anything on it. Got any leades on their parents?
