Hey Marla,
My name is Frank Brown.
I notice your post was from 2001- did you get the info you were looking for??
James Floyd Friesland was my maternal Grandfather-- He had two sets of children --8 in each- My Mother was next to the youngest-- her name was Rosa..
Who was your mother?-- I have a LOT of info some that my mother gave me-- but just this week , I got the Friesland lineage all the way back to 1545 in Germany-- The Friesland who came here from Germany settled in Cabarrus county in the mid to late 1700's some of His offspring went to Illinois and one went to Ashe County-- I'll have to dig deeper into this book I got yesterday , but we are descended from whichever one went to Ashe Co. Email me your grandmothers name and I'll send my phone nr so you can call if you like

Als je hiervoor belangstelling hebt, laat het me even weten, dan stuur ik ze door naar je.

Groetjes,
Marianne van Huissteden
Zutphen

Hi Jan,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but I had a problem finding the the birth of your g-grandfather Klaas. A very kind fellow genealogist looked up his marriage registration to find the neccesary info. I have the scans if you like them. And I guess your dad was born after 1902. Those data are not publicly available, and I only found 3 (not 2) brothers. So here we go, starting with your gggg-grandparents:

Jan Arjens
Bapt.
Hello, My line is through Aaron's brother Henry and wife Malinda Wyatt. Do you have any information on Henry's line or know someone who does? I'm most interested in Henry's oldest daughter, Mary E. Friesland. Several years ago I contacted the Franklin & Marshall College, Archives and Special collections in Lancaster PA and received a Lineage Chart back to Johan Friedrich Christoph Friesland and numerous letters.

Georg Friesland of Cabarrus Actually Died in Savannah?!

In the line I’m researching, Johann Georg Daniel Friesland was thought to be the father of Sarah Friesland, wife of Paul Eli Bost, Sr.

About everything I’ve read shows two different Frieslands in the (current) Cabarrus County, NC area of the 1770s-1780s. One was a Mr. Friesland hired to be a teacher for and by a church congregation, and the other was Georg Friesland, Hessian soldier. Some people attempted to combine the two, but the dates they first appear in the county prevent that from being possible.

The prevailing opinion seems to be that Sarah’s father was the Hessian soldier. The information in the following book makes me believe that this theory can’t be true. With great reluctance, I’m forced to believe that the school teacher with the unknown first name and origin is the best candidate instead. *****

I was trying to learn more about Hessian soldiers deserting from Savannah and stumbled across a report of Georg Friesland's death. Please read what was in the book and give your opinion. I can’t understand sticking with the Hessian soldier info after this, but I’m open to the opinions and wisdom of far more experienced Friesland Family researchers.

*******
From page 189 of the book “The Georgia Dutch: from the Rhine and Danube to the Savannah, 1733-1783 by George Fenwick Jones (found on Google Books) ---

In a letter by a senior officer in Friesland’s regiment (Col. Friedrich von Porbeck of the Garrison Regiment von Wissenbach /Knablauch), he described desertion attempts. Of interest is the following section, which is word-for-word:

“When it is reported to Lieutenant Colonel Alured Clarke, the British commander, that five men had deserted, he sends out a patrol that sees from the footprints in the dew seven miles from town that the deserters have gone to a plantation belonging to a Jew named Sheftall whose father fled there from Berlin and whose son still speaks good German. The Creeks pursue in the swamp and find the deserters together in a thicket. A Creek by the name of Werner, who can speak good German, too, calls to them in the British language, also in German, that they should surrender. “We will not surrender,” and immediately raise their muskets. Hereupon the Creeks open fire and kill some, and they still defend themselves with their sabers in their hands, as the enclosed report to His Serene Highness shows.

These unfortunates, who deserted on 9 March 1782, were all killed and scalped. They appear to have been the privates Christoph Bracke of Valbruck in Hannover, Georg Friesland of Verden in Hannover, Johannes Schelhaas of Messel by Darmstadt, and Wilhelm Eckstein of Lorch in the Territory of Mainz. Bracke was twenty-three years old, the others all twenty-five.” *****

All of the information coincides, except that Sarah Friesland’s father (age 25, from Verden, deserting from the same Regiment in Savannah) supposedly deserted in April 1782, not March.

The Mr. Friesland noted below in the other book, appears to have been in the area around 1774:

“It was not until the year 1774 that the congregation obtained their first pastor, who had been laboring about a year and some months at Organ Church and in Salisbury, and who had been brought to America by a deputation sent from Organ and St. John's Churches to Germany, in 1773. He located himself about one and a half miles East of St. John's Church, on a tract of land of his own entry or purchase, and labored faithfully all the remaining days of his life among this people. The congregation also secured about the same time the services of a Mr. Friesland as their school-teacher."

*******

Any comments or other theories for Sarah's father?

Thank you,

Cheri
Hello, I have an earlier post reference Mary E. Friesland. My Mary was Henry and Malinda's oldest child. Other children were: Susan, William, Celia, David, Sally, James Floyd, Eleanor and Martha. I believe she was married twice. First to William McCoy Hodgson (1862-1892) and again to a man named Hudson. I have written many relatives including those in/near Abingdon VA with no success. I recently found her mentioned in the Ashe County School Census with her son Landon. I have been able to collect a lot of information reference the Friesland family but very little on her. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I moved from a metro area of 4 million in MN where I was the only Tamminga to town of 30,000 in TX and there is another Tamminga here. They say the name differently than my family, but closer to the Dutch pronunciation.

He married Tryntje Faber in Friesland province of Netherlands before immigrating to Wisconsin, U.S.A. around 1899. He had at least one brother who also came to U.S. Jense 1868-1931 who was married to Gertrude. I believe they immigrated in 1891. One other possible brother was Garan or Garene who was married to Ella and immigrated to Wisconsin in 1903.

I am looking for any information on the surname Slopsema. My great grandfather was Herman Slopsema and I can not find anything more about him. He was married to a Margaret Venhausen? He would have been born in the 1880's? I believe he came to America from Friesland.

(Jacob/Jakob) Lampers

Im new to genealogy and, i have found it difficult to trace my tree back on this lampers side. My great grandfather's name was Frank Lampers and if the naming went as it traditionally would have, he named his first son after his paternal father, (am i guessing correctly?). His first son was named Jake, short for Jacob or Jakob. I want to know if there are any birth or death or any records in Friesland of a Jakob/Jacob Lampers or if you can direct me in a better direction?

Re: descendants HAGA

Hello Joyce,
I have a Wytske Haga, born sep 8, 1836 at Sneek in Friesland, The Netherlands. She was a daughter of Wypke Sikkes Haga (1808-1885) and Wybregjen Sipkes Bleeker (1809-1853). I can not find any further information in The Netherlands about her. Maybe she married Hendrikus van der Burg and went to the US. Changed her name into Wyna (Wilhelmina?) and we are speaking about the same person. Maybe the names of the parents are given to their children? For example: Wypke or Wybregjen? Perhaps that's a clue?
Please let me know.
Bye, Haga Broekema
