My relatives have always lived in or near Eunice. My mother was born in Church Point. We were decended from the original Fruges fom Cheney, France that settled near Eunice in the 1750. hope you are still doing research. Dorothy

Wow, youve done alot of good work there I also have been tracking our family history, looks like you found alittle more than I did. I found that Pierre was with his family an indentured servent in Fruge, France. If you notice his relocation to the states is prior to the french revolution, at this time many land owners started freeing IS or allowing them to purchase thier freedom. The name francios means "from france" or "free one" in french, and showed on paper that the person presenting this was free of any indentured dept. Also he moved to another village from Fruge prior to moving to the area now known as LA and TX. He was a miller or baker for awhile before moving. As to the land and how it was purchased, either he had money from the time spent in LA or his marriage into the merchant family helped this, as they were a prominant family in that area at the time.

(b 31 May 1888, VP ch : v.r. p96) & Fanelie Dixen (1 July 1886, VP ch : v.r. p96), however the information also Don Diegue and Fanelie listing Don Diegue C. Fonetenot and Fanelie Dixen as their parents. The other problem with this is that Erminia was form in 1873 which would make Diegue 11 and Fanelie 13.

I could definitely use some assistance. I am having difficulty finding a couple of connections. 1 )The connection between my grand father Elois Fruge (1879) and my great-grand father Francois Fruge. From my research I have found that Francois, born 1854 died abt 1880, is the son of Augustin Pierre Fruge and brother to Casaire Fruge. However this is where things get convoluted. I have found information stating that Elois mother is listed both as Clara Bordelon and Celestine Bruthe (on the death certificate, info given by his son Joseph). Casaire was married to Clara Bordelon while his brother Francois was living with him.

2) Out of Elois' siblings - Victor, Olide, Willis, Gustave, Theresa, and Derozin. It appears Victor and Olide's father was actually Casaire and not Francois. I can not find any information on the others. I know Olide was married (per his death certificate) but there is no information listed on his wife, not even her name. He was killed by a Frisco train and evidently no one supplied family information.

My great-great-great grandfather was Jean Louis Frouge. From various accounts, he was most likely born in Landry Parrish, LA in 1822. I do not know who he married, but I do know it was a French and Indian woman whose family name resembles Outlous (I have no idea how to spell such a resemblance). He had several children, but the only one I know is my great-great grandfather William Jefferson who married Mary Hattie Gill (we called her Hattie)who was supposedly Osage though there is debate among my family that she is of Chickasaw heritage given that she was adopted by people with the surname "Hite". He had eight Children: Willard Marshall (b. 1916), Preston Wesley (b. 1917), Eva Lena (b. 1919) who we called "Sister", Russel Jack (b. ?), Nora Bernice (b. 1922), Leonard Percy (b. 1924), Earl Jefferson (b. 1927), and Jefferson (b. 1933). My great grandmother was Nora Bernice who married into a line of Herods and produced my grandmother, Mary Emma. Now, I can't say that all of this information is chronologically correct with names and what not, but they are the correct names. Also, they're associated with three parishes, but I only know of Beauregard Parrish and Landry Parrish. I myself am trying to organize a lot of information through family legend and paperwork about the Fruges since I recently moved to the South, so it would be good to communicate with you and exchange notes! I hope some of this information sounds familiar and might be helpful :-)

FRUGE' in Southern Louisiana

Greets all,

I'm trying to trace beyond my great-grandparents. Joseph Dudley Fruge' came from Eunice, LA, married Alice Miller, later on lived/died around Baton Rouge, LA.

His parents were Evans Fruge' (abt 1891-?) and Lucile Sitig (i believe 1899-1980).

That's as far as I get.

Alice's parents were Etenne Miller (abt 1897-?) and Ezlora (abt 1902-?).

Many years ago, one of the family in Eunice had traced (I believe) the Fruge' side to pirates (as in Lafitte).

And, that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge. Any and all help, is greatly appreciated.

Diana: Sorry for the long period to reply. I am indeed also researching the Miller's, and in fact have done lots of work to date. GU Leo is one of Grandma's uncles I knew, but not well when I was growing up in Iota. As you know by now, Aunt Lillian died 6 Sept 2005 in Iota. I would love to have the photo you referred to with her as a baby. I have one Anne Mae LeJeune, but she was born in 1934, probably too young to be your husband's grandmother. Please let me know how I may obtain a copy of the photo. My sister, Julia, married to Clifton Richard, lives in Eunice. Hope to meet you someday. Thanks: Bob LeJeune

Fruge slave ancestor fathered by Lastie Fruge

Hi, I'm doing some research in order to find out more about my ggg grandmother, Caroline Fruge(b1844) who married Emmanuel Young in 1868 in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. According to Catholic records, she was the daughter of Lastie FRUGE and Rose LITTLE? Also census records list her as being a mulatto. I believe that the Lastie FRUGE that was listed as her father is the same Lastie FRUGE that was married to the FUSILIER woman. Interestily enough, as I was browsing through the 1860 and 1850 slave schedules, I found a slaveowning Fruge named Celine FRUGE with 2 mulatto slaves in one year and one female mulatto slave in 1860. I believe that the 16 yr mulatto found in 1860 and the 6 yr old mulatto female in 1850 is the same person and is proberly my ggg grandmother, Caroline. I would like to know if anyone knows who is Celine FRUGE and whether or not there is any connection to Lastie FRUGE. Celine lived in Avoyllees Parish, Louisiana in both years.

Robert, I just read your post. I grew up in Eunice and was checking messages from there. My mother was a Miller from Iota, Amenthe Miller married to Sostan Fruge was my Grandfather's sister. Leo Miller was my Grandfather. I know you are not researching the "Miller's" but I have photos of Amenthe Miller Fruge with Lillian as a baby, I also have Lillian Fruge's wedding picture. Would be happy to share!
My husband's grandmother was Annie Mae LeJeune from Eunice. If you happen to come across that name would like some help. Thanks, Diana Wooten Spears

updates for a Fruge' line

I am the daughter of Ray Lawremce FRUGE; b. 3 May 1924 in Orange, TX. His parents were Clarence FRUGE' (whom I am looking for any info on) and Hallie Mae WINFREE, supposedly married ? in Orange TX.
Ray Lawrence FRUGE' m. 2 Nov. 1954, Dorothy Laverne DAVISON, both from the Dallas TX area. They had moved to Minnesota/South Dakota, where their first of two daughters were born: Vera Eryn Gwynn FRUGE, b. 24 May 1954, and Laura Lea FRUGE', b. 17 Feb. 1961.

Ray FRUGE died in January of 2000 of a stroke. Dorothy Laverne DAVISON died in 1980 of congestive heart failure. And my little sister, Laura FRUGE' died in June 2003. Being the last of a line has reinstated my genealogy interest again.

QUERY: I am having trouble finding any information on my grandfather: CLARENCE FRUGE', d. in Lake Charles, LA.

His father was BENJAMIN FRUGE',: found in a footnote of Judge Cleveland's book and a site that has been lost since the 1980s in a reference in a LA library. I was gratefully helped by Betty? when I was Prodigy. If anything is available about him, I would love to hear from you.

The ggrandfather is ERNEST FRUGE' - again from Judge Cleveland's book in the footnote. I don't know much about him, but I did find a listing of an ERNEST FRUGE' as a private in the Confederate Army.

Michael: I am a grandson (and am now a 5 time grandpa myself) of Sostan Fruge, one of Auguste's sons. I have finally found a treasure trove of information in Cherie's data. Please send me what you have, including the picture which would greatly improve my research. As soon as I get this line in order, I'll return the favor. My mother was Ruby Fruge, Sostan's daughter. She died 4 Mar 2003 in Eunice. I grew up in Iota.
THanks
Robert L. "Bob" LeJeune
