Hi Denise, have just checked my e-mails and found one from ancestry with your query on it. How much do you want to know? Your great-great-grandfather, William Fryers, was the eldest brother of my great-grandfather. They were two of about 11 children born to John Fryers, a tailor, living and working in Milnthorpe, Westmoreland and his wife Jane (nee Whitaker). I have done a lot of research on them and can send you loads of info, but don't want to send you stuff you might not want, so let me know.I've also researched further back into John Fryers' antecedents if that interests you. Incidentally, when I was researching the family, it struck me as very odd that William, the first-born, was born in Preston, when his parents were living in Millnthorpe --quite a long journey for a pregnant woman to make in those days. It soon became obvious why -his parents married in Heversham church, Milnthorpe, in May 1829 and William was baptised in Decembeer of that year in a church in Preston! There's a good story there! Let me know what info. you want.
p.s. I am in touch with some people descended from George Fryers, another brother of William's, so there are a lot of us out there.

Please e-mail me and I can give you more contact details. I have to admit that I don't know where Highams Park is, clues please!! I'm not able to get to UK again till after the new year.
Hi Pat, have just logged on again because of the time difference between here and Europe and boy has this message board been buzzing overnight! Fantastic to have some progress on George at last - my e-mail address is: Janemartin47@hotmail.com and I would be so grateful to see the marriage ceertificate of George senior and Jane Nancy. I know I'm not one of his direct descendants, but I've been trying to fill in the gaps with my great-grandfather's siblings and what happened to them all, and the "Mystery of George" was intriguing. Many, many thanks for your help. If you want to know what became of any of his brothers or sisters i can send you what I know. Thankyou again, Jane.

Hi, yes please, I would love to know what's on the marriage certificate of George and Jane Nancy. I'm actually living in Indianapolis now for the next 2 years, so it might be possible to find out a bit more about him while I'm this side of the pond. I'd love to clear up the mystery about what happened to him and how many children he had and where they all went. I'm sure we're all related to each other, just got to prove it!

Hi, I got an e-mail from ancestry to say someone had posted a reply on the Fryers message board, it's so long since there's been any activity there I'd forgotten all about it!Your George Fryers (senior) was the elder brother of my great-grandfather, so we are related! I have loads of info about the Fryers family and have also been in contact with someone else who is directly descended from George. He was born in Milnthorpe, just south of Kendal, in 1841, the 7th child and 5th son of John Fryers, the local tailor and his wife Jane (nee Whitaker). My great-grandfather was Charles Whitaker fryers, George's baby brother, born in 1850. When he was 19, George married Mary Jane Hutton, a local girl, who I believe had inherited a fair bit of money. I have him on the census for 1861 working on the railway locally, then he moved to Shap (I think) in Cumbria where he became station-master. During this time, he and his wife had 2 girls - Mary (born 1861) and Eleanor (can't remember date of birth). Then George and his wife seem to have moved to London, and according to his other descendant who has been researching him, his wife gave birth to a baby boy - Richard Christopher Fryers in the London lying-in hospital, but then she died a few days later. The next we hear of George, he has married Jane Nancy Tinslay and headed off to the US. His 2 daughters by his first wife stayed behind in England and Mary Jane at least, spent some time with George's parents in Milnthorpe. After this, there is a blank, until we pick up Jane Nancy Fryers as a widow in the 1881 census, living in Bethnal Green with her 2 boys. I would love to know what happened to George in the USA. As I am currently in Indianapolis for 2 years, it might be possible to have access to some records here that aren't available in the UK, I'll have to see.
How interested are you in the Fryers family further back? I have traced them back to the early 18th century if you want the details, but won't inflict them all on you unless you want. Actually several people seem to be researching George, as you'll see from the message board.
Would love to hear what you've found out, let me know if I can be of any more help, good luck with the hunt! Jane. p.s. have you seen the posting from Pat Elliott about the marriage certificate?

dear pat, don't know if this is of any help, but there was a george fryers in my family who emigrated to the USA from England in the 1860s. He had 2 sons born out there, but was dead by 1881, when his widow and sons are listed in the 1881 census as being back in London. He was one of my great-grandfather's elder brothers. he is also being researched by a "long lost cousin" who is directly descended from him. oon't know if we're looking for the same man, but will gladly pass on all I know and put you in touch with his descendant if you think it's any help. jane martin

Hello Pat, I thnk we have been in touch before about Fryers ancestors. I got an e-mail notification of your query about George Fryers' sons. They came back to England with their mother, after George died in the USA (don't know when), but they are all 3 listed in the census for 1881. I seem to remember that George's widow, Nancy Jane, was working as a glove-maker or something similar and the familywere living in London.

Hi Jane
I think weve been in contact before. The other descendant of George you talk about must be Alison.
I,ve got info from her about Fryers back to late 1600,s i think it is.
Like you, the only bit of his life i cant find, is his short stay in USA where he died in a railroad accident.
I think you,ll find George/Jane had 3 boys not 2.It,s assumed 2 as there was only 2 with her in Bethnal Green in 1881,that that was all they had.My g,gfather Edward Charles Fryers, b,1869 in between John b 1867 and George b, 1872
was put into a training school in London, as he was "a bit of a handful" for his Mum.He turned out to be a brilliant carpenter.
I still cant find Edwards birthplace.
I have death dates of all 3 boys, and also found online that Jane Nancy got married again at a late age.
Let me know if you want copy of George/Jane wedding cert, and Janes birth cert
Take care,Pat Elliot

Hiya
Yes, i also know Georges history before he went to USA with new wife Jane Nancy (nee,Tinslay)I was told by another relative that he died in a railroad accident in early 1870,s
I,ve been searching for him during his short time in USA but found nothing. He got married 24th November, 1866 in Shoreditch,London.I have the marriage certificate, and i also have Jane Nancys birth certificate.People think George and Jane had 2 boys, as there was only 2 living with her in Bethnal Green in 1881, but, in fact ,there was 3.The middle boy of the 3, b,1869, was my g,gfather Edward Charles Fryers. He was apparently put into a training school. He was "a bit of a handful" for his Mum, so was sent away.
Pat

Hi Jan
Send me your email address and i,ll scan a copy of the marriage cert, plus i might be able to help with George jnrs marriage details as well.Yes, just checked, got it.George Fryers b, St Louis, married Florence or Clara Morris in Poplar(London) in 3rd quarter 1895, volume 1c ,page 1058.Thats what you need to send to Records Office in London for the certifcate.
It,s cheaper if you apply to the borough where he got married, instead of the big records office.£7 in English money, as compared to £11.50p sterling in head office.
Address to apply to;
The Registry Office,.
Bromley Public Hall
Bow Rd
London
E3 3AA
UK
Hope this helps you.
Pat
email:Elliotdusty@aol.com

As I said before I have the Missouri records department trying to dig up some info for me as I know George S Fryers was born in St Louis, Missouri about 1872. Am keeping my fingers crossed. Will let you know what happens. Thanks a million. If I come across anything further on Edward I'll certainly let you know. Thanks again. Janet

Hello Allison,I think you're right. We must be some kind of distant cousins. My Nan was Florence Ethel, grandad called her Flo. She lived most of her life in Plaistow, East London but retired out to Southend. I do remember my dad (Jack Lawrence) taking us to visit his Aunt May. Mum had her address down as 82 Bishops Way E.2 I remember the front of the house had stone steps going downwards and some railings. My Mum has another address for her at 19 Causley Way, Hackney and said she was married to Syd Robertson. If we're still on the same wave length I'd love to get in touch.
I now live in Normandie, France but get over to UK quite frequently. Also my baby sister Jackie still lives over there near Rayleigh, Essex. We've actually been doing our Family Tree (or Forest) together and are back to the late 1700's on lots of our lines now. Please, please, please let us know if we're related......It will be lovely to think someone we find on our ancestry tree is still alive!!!
Fingers Crossed. Jan Bell (Yes it rings a bell - ME).

Hello Pat, I'm Jan and reasonably new to this. My Great Grandad was GEORGE S FRYERS born in St. Louis, Missouri. He and older brother JOHN H FRYERS born Springfield, Indiana returned with their mother JANE N ? to London pre 1881.
Am hoping the Missouri records services will come up with some more information for me, have spoken to them and they're going to try. Will be sure to let you know if I get anything. Meanwhile....would almost KILL to see the marriage certificate or at least have the County, volume & page reference. Have applied to Public records office LONDON for George Jnr's marriage certificate in the hope of getting a possible thread back or at least confirmation. Will let you know if it helps.
Hello Jane, thanks for your prompt reply. My sister and I have been hitting our heads against a brick wall for ages.
Will take all the info you can give us. All our original starter info came from an Aunt (direct grand daughter to George S Fryers) She always thought George S. had 2 other brothers who may have been lost as sea but apparently her parents didn't give much info away, hence our problems. Also our ancestors all seemed rooted in London, Bethnall Green & Bow. Have the Missouri records services trying to find some trace (Census perhaps) as we speak, so if I get anything concrete I'll certainly let you know. Otherwise all info is too us from our Grandmother who was born Florence Ethel Fryers & married William Henry Lawrence. Yes am contacting Pat Elliott next. Wish I'd tried these message boards sooner - how fantastic! Hope to hear from you soon. Jan.

My sister & I have been researching our tree and have discovered one of our great
grandfathers was GEORGE S FRYERS born in St Louis USA abt 1872.
He was mentioned in the 1881 UK census as living in Bethnal Green with his widowed mother JANE N FRYERS and older brother JOHN H FRYERS born abt 1869 in Indiana USA. If you have any information on GEORGE SNR or his wife JANE N I'd be eternally grateful. Yours hopefully, Janetbell130

Hi Jane, this is more complicated than you think. The George you are talking about had 2 boys,John and George jnr, with wife Nancy Jane.Another George had 2 boys Edward Charles and George.I thought for a time that John might have got in some bother and changed his name to Edward, and then my hopes were dashed when i found George jnr, John AND Edward on 1891 (or 1901) census in London. Whilst talking to an old nephew of my g,ma Fryers,he told me that his mother had told him that her dad Edward Charles and brother George jnr were brought back to England after both parents died in a flu epidemic in 1874/5.Apparently both the boys wereput into a Masonic home for boys in London.I,ve been in touch with Masons but they have no records that far back.
My 2 boys arent on 1881 England census or 1880 USA census, cant find them on a ship, and have even tried ships in ports on census day.No luck anywhere.
I,m cpompletely at the brick wall.NO! i THINK I,M IN DARN WALL.Any ideas?
PAT

Hi
Children born out of wed lock is where they go, is to a work house back in those days. The father would not take them in or care for then but would take there fun when the could and be dammed for what happens to a child in those days. If he has the right name it could be the his child. The census dont have all the right answers, They are not 100% and I can prove that.
Brenda

Hi Pat. Dont give up. If you have any Idea where in uk they was born then start there. If you have dates that will help to. Use your pc to contact England and see if some one can look for you. There must be a place in England that holds that info. Just dont give up, ok. The answers has to be some where, it is just looking in the right place at the right time.
I will keep my eyes open for you.
Brenda

I'm so sorry that it took me so long to get back with you. I had computer trouble to deal with and I also changed servers. I have a new e-mail address. I'm now at beet@go-concepts.com . I will try and help at this end. I'm here in the USA in the state of Ohio. The George that you are trying to find could have changed his name. That is why I said to check all spelling of the name. and yes. Frye is the name I was given at birth. but names change here a lot over the last 100 years. so far I have found family under the name of frye, fry and frey and also fray. It is hard to believe so many changes in a name, but it happens. If you care to e-mail me and tell me what was told to you , I might be able to help put it together. I will do the best that I can.
Brenda Frye
