I think I got carried away when I found Robert Bricker and Anna (Fryman) and her brother William in Clermont Co. Ohio where George Fryman and Margaret (Snapp) had lived before moving to Richland Co., Illinois. I scanned the 1850 Cs for Williamsburg twp. and found a Susannah Fryman, age 18 yrs. working a Gravis family. There is no way George and Margaret would have left an unmarried daughter behind. She shows up in later Cs. married to a Hutton, living next door to the Bricker family. Anna, William and Susannah are likely children of the David Fryman who was at Union twp., Brown Co., OH, 1830 Cs. Alma Spragg

So I have a little more details... Looking for a Joe B. Fryman, married a women by the name of Edna last name don't know, Not sure of there children but I do know that Edna had a son by the name of Robert William Fryman who is believed not to be Joe's, he is his stepson. I do know Robert died on 14 Sep 1982 in Urbana, Champaign Co., OH, USA at age 62, and was buried in Bear Creek Cemetery, Drexel, Montgomery Co., OH. I also know Robert had another wife by the name of Virginia A, born in 1913-died 2009. If anoyone has any info of Robert and what his parent's names was that would be great. :)

This is what I have on the family of George Fryman
and Margaret Snapp. They lived in Nicholas Co.,KY,
moving to Clermont Co., OH before 1830 where you
can find them in Cs. records. They were in the Cs.
of Bracken Co., KY in 1840, but they had to have gone
there to help a family member through a troubled
time. There is no way they left their home and
children in Ohio and started a new family.

Mary Fryman, b. abt 1803 Nicholas Co. KY, m. 19 Mar
1822, Harrison Co., Ky
+Joseph Smith, from Clermont Co. OH to Richland Co.,
Illinois before 1850

Charlotte Fryman, b. abt. 1806 Nicholas Co;, KY, m.
29 May 1826, Harrison Co., KY
+Richard Hill

Elisha Jacob Fryman, b. 1808, Nicholas Co., d. 1887
in Richland Co., Ill. m. 23 Aug 1832, Clermont Co.,
Ohio
+Eleanor "Ellen" Worrall, b. 1812, probably in New
Jersey

Catherine Fryman, b. abt 1810, apparently d. bet.
1843 and 1850, Ohio, m. 02 May 1829, Clermont Co.,
Ohio
+Joseph McIntire, no further info

Matilda Fryman, b. abt 1813/14, Nicholas Co., Ky,
m. late 1832, Clermont Co., Ohio
+Nathan C. Thomas, d. before 1860
Was in Richland Co., Ills 1850, 1860 (a widow)

Samuel Fryman b. 1816 Nicholas Co., KY. was quite
likely married (to Susan Baker?) at time of the
1840 Cs in Bracken Co., KY in which he was shown
to have had two sons under the age of 5 yrs. Was
in the 1850 Cs of Jersey Co., Ills., living with
Narcissa Cynthia (Kiskadden) Waits, who had married
first, William Waits. They had several children
before getting married 12 Nov 1861
+Narcissa Cynthia Jane Kiskadden

Rebecca Fryman, b. abt. 1816/17 m. 10 May 1843,
Clermont Co., OH
+Andrew Brooks, moved to Richland Co., Ills, bef.
1860 Cs in which you can find Charlotte (Fryman)
Hill living next to them with her daus, Lavina
and Charlotte.

Margaret Fryman, b. abt. 1820, Nicholas Co., KY,
m. abt 1836/7 as a 2nd wife to:
+Richard Worrell, b. 1802, New Jersey. They had
moved to Richland Co., Ills. by 1860. Amongst
their many children there was a son named Joseph
who was to marry Julia, dau. of Samuel and Narcissa.

Anna L. Fryman, b. abt 1822, d. bet.1870-1880 in
Clermont Co., OH, m. 04 Jul 1842, Clermont Co., OH
+Robert Bricker. The 1850 Cs shows Robert as a
"cabinet maker" and his brother-in-law working with
him. This family did not show up in Richland Co. Ills.
Census at any time. Later census shows Robert as a
farmer. They raised 8 children.

Louis Fryman, b. 1824, KY, was in his parent's home
at time of the 1860 Cs., Richland Co., Ills. He was
26 yrs old, m. in 1852,
Martha A Yates, raise 8 children.

William M. Fryman, b. 1830/31, remained in Clermont
Co., OH, lived with his sister and her family until
he married before 1860 to Louisa (possibly surname
was Bull as there was a young lady by that name in
their home 1860). William worked as "cabinet Maker"
several years and then became an undertaker. William
and Louisa raised 7 children.

I have all these listed with their children, but
must keep this short. I just want to get the record
straight. I have seen no sign of all those other
people that have been put into records as children
of George and Margaret. I descend from this family,
and don't appreciate them being used as a dumping
ground. Margaret was born in 1784, died in 1860. No
woman I have ever known of had children past the
age of 55, and very few of that age. Joseph and
Minerva were grand-children, and quite possibly
were children of Samuel and his first wife,

Alma Spragg

Re: Joseph Fryman KY - IL

Hi, I am Alma Spragg. I am trying to resolve some problems
I have found in the on-line lineage charts of my George
Fryman and Margaret Snapp. They are shown to have been the
parents of Matthew and Henry who belong to Jacob Fryman and
Catherine Snapp who remained in KY. George and Jacob are
brothers who married sisters. Another mistake is your Joseph
and his sister, Minerva. They and their mother are all shown
to be children of George and Margaret. They were living in
Richland Co., Ills. in the home of George and Margaret, 1850
Cs. Joseph's death certificate shows his mother was Susan
(Baker) and whomever was giving the info did not know who
his father was. There is no way that George was the father.
Susan died in 1850 and Margaret died in 1860. Minerva was
still in George's home, 1860 Cs. She probably married in
Richland County. She was born about 1837, probably in Bracken Co., KY. I suspect they were probably grand- children, and their father was deceased. But I do not know
who their father could have been. One son I have been unable to find in Cs is Melvin D. Fryman, who supposedly
married a Mary E. Fryman. Could Susan have been a 2nd wife? What can we do to trace this further? Perhaps we can find
who Minerva married and get her death certificate? Tell me
what you know, if anything further than this. Alma

Thank you again! That confirms what I too have found. What I'm having trouble with is the father of Jacob Fryman who married Elizabeth Broadstone. I found a George Fryman in the census in Maryland at the same time period who I surmise may be Jacob's father. If it is, my next problem is finding who George Fryman's father is. Do you think Beverly Houghling would be open to me contacting her?

Once again thank you very much. You've helped clear up one of the lingering puzzles of my search.

My source is Beverly Houghling who has been researching the Fryman family for many years. Elizabeth Broadstone's parents were John Jacob Breitenstein/Broadstone (1742-1824) and Maria Catrina Frey (1746-1831). Jacob and Elizabeth were married in Washington Co., MD.

Thanks so much for the reply. There was so little activity on this board I didn't know what to expect--or if I would even hear anything.

I really appreciate the information! Can you tell me your source? I have hunted for quite a while and couldn't find any verification of Jacob (1813) being the Jacob and Elizabeth's son. His son Israel is my great-grandfather. Do you have any other information about the father of Jacob spouse of Elizabeth? I've made the assumption that since Jacob and Elizabeth were married in Maryland that it is George Fryman who I found listed in--if I remember correctly--the 1810 Maryland census. I've been trying to find a connection to the Freymann's of Pennsylvania.

Thank you again!

LEADINGTON — His name is Walter Fryman, but most people just know him as Windy. After 60 years of working, the local car salesman has signed off on his last deal and is driving off into retirement.

Fryman has owned Ozark Auto Sales since 1988 and personally crafted the dealership’s slogan “Don’t pay retail.”

“I always tried to price my vehicles under the book valued price,” Fryman explained.

Fryman was born in what used to be Flat River in 1940. His father was killed when he was just 10 months old so Windy moved in with his grandparents along with his mother and brother. His grandparents owned a grocery store and he got his first job when he was 8 years old — sorting soda bottles. He claims his brother gave him the nickname Windy before he could even talk.

In 1960 he sold his first car for B&B Oldsmobile in Leadington.

“It was a 1955 Ford,” Fryman said. “I sold it for $125.”

He worked as a parts manager and service manager before he started selling cars full-time in 1969. He worked for Frank Drier Pontiac and Cadillac in Flat River. When the dealership sold out to Superior Pontiac and Cadillac in 1973 he became a partner in the business.

In 1979 he sold out and went to work in St. Louis for a short stint. By 1985 though, he was back in the friendly confines of Flat River and went to work for Ozark Auto Sales in Leadington. At that time the dealership was owned by HL Sonny Collins.

“When he (Collins) retired in 1988, I took the car lot over,” Fryman said. “I moved to our current location in 2002.”

He said over the years the car business has drastically changed.

“I stocked my first used car lot for $18,000,” Fryman said “Now I have that in one car. I could buy cars for the lot when I first started for $600 - $1,000. I didn’t want a car payment over $37.50 per month. Now with the price of cars going up, everything has changed. There are always ups and downs in the car business. I’m one of these guys that kept laughing and kept going. I never accumulated a lot of money, but I’ve had a lot of fun.”

He said his love of cars has kept him in the car business.

“I’ve always loved cars and I knew this was what I wanted to do,” Fryman said. “I feel very fortunate that I was able to make a living doing something I love to do.”

He has been married to his wife Joette since 1961 and has two daughters, Angie Scism and Jill Patton, along with grandchildren.

Fryman bragged that he has worked the past 60 years and has never drawn an unemployment check.

“I’ve always worked,” Fryman said. “There are three local new car dealers that have always impressed me. Lee Bollinger, Sam Scism and Joe Turner are very reputable and went about doing things the right way. When you do people right, you will get their repeat business.”

He said the used car market has changed in that it is more competitive in St. Francois County than it has ever been before.

“I am fortunate that I found a customer base that continued to buy cars from me throughout the years,” Fryman said. “Now there are so many car lots out there.”

What advice does Fryman offer to any person thinking about going into the car sales business?

“Be honest — treat people fairly and they will be back,” Fryman said.

At the beginning of the year Fryman sold Ozark Auto Sales to Zach Johnson of Farmington.

“When Zach and his father approached me a year ago about buying the dealership I told them I wasn’t ready,” Fryman said. “Zach wanted this dealership a lot. They stayed in contact with me and as the months went by I realized that the time was right for me to retire. There needed to be some young blood here and Zach is a good fit. He comes from a good family and knows a lot about cars. I felt comfortable selling him the dealership.”

Fryman said he plans on spending more time with his family and is looking forward to getting to attend more stock car races. He said he also is going to keep his wholesale license and plans on doing some wholesaling.

“I will buy some cars and sell them to dealers,” Fryman said.

What is Windy going to miss most”

“All the people that stopped by the lot each day to shoot the breeze.” Fryman said.

[Daily Journal, Park Hills, MO., January 27, 2008]

Walter "Windy" Fryman - Citizen of the Year (2008)

Daily Journal names Fryman Citizen of Year
By P.BARR/Daily Journal, Park Hills, MO
Sunday, January 20, 2008.

Since he was a youngster, Walter Fryman has been called "Windy" for the stories he likes to tell.

Now he has another one.

Fryman is this year's winner of the Daily Journal's Citizen of the Year Award presented by George Easley Friday night at the Park Hills – Leadington Chamber of Commerce annual installation banquet in Elizabeth Hall, Leadington.

Fryman thought Kent Scism was the honoree, but a few days ago, he noticed his family was acting a bit funny.

"I got a little suspicious the last few days," Fryman said. "I thought they were going to pull something on me."

He added, "This is quite an honor."

Fryman is a native of Flat River and grew up in a house of pranksters, said his daughter Jill Patton. One of her favorite stories of her dad involves an outhouse and a cantankerous rooster.

When Fryman was about 8 or 9, his grandfather locked him in the outhouse with an old rooster.

"That rooster would always go after me," Fryman recalled. "I just about tore the outhouse down before they let me out."

Fryman began working at the age of 8, when he helped in his grandfather's grocery store. After graduating from Flat River High School, he went straight into the work force.

Fryman is best known for his work in auto sales, which began in 1969. He sold cars at Ozark Auto in 1985 and bought the business three years later.

Patton worked for her dad off and on.

"When I started working with him, I noticed how much people appreciated him for his honesty," she said. "People coming in and saying he's the only person they'd buy a used car from — that means a lot."

Fryman retired recently, but agreed to help the new owners for three months.

"Then I don't know what I'll do," he said.
Another Fryman who served in Civil War was Fritz Fryman (possibly Freimann at one time) (16 Mar 1836, Riga Russia)but he went by the alias Jacob Shepherd. Apparently it was OK to pay someone to serve in your stead...he retired with a union pension. Don't know much about him and am trying to find out more. He married Catharina Beierwaltes (2 Mar 1852)from Steinwiessen, Bavaria, Germany. They divorced after several children. She ended up with kids in Everett, WA. He died in VA home in Leavenworth, Kansas. Anyone know any more of him? Thanks, marsyh@comcast.net

None of the names you list are familiar, when I get a chance I will check my tree. I was wrong, Elizabeth was on the other side of my family.

Hi James,
My uncle is James Fryman and I do not believe he is alive anymore. He was one of the Fryman children to move from Levenworth KS where there are still a lot of Fryman's to CA. From my Great Grandfather and for 4 generations were the Charles Edward Fryman's. I have not yet found if the family name was anything other than Fryman. Let me know, dariarene@gmail.com. I think I have seen William in my line of Fryman's but, I am not sure, I have gotten a lot of information on my family ancestry. By the way I was born Dorean Mae Fryman, one of eight children. I was the fourth of 8 children and the first born in Alameda CA. I call MN my home although I am in Up State New York to find work as a RN. MN has too many nurses and I have a friend here. I do plan on moving back to MN where all my last two of three children were born. I was married to Joel David Reed who I met in CA when he lived there a short time and then me moved to his home state MN. Thanks, Daria

Hi Elizabeth,
Dale is my cousin. How exciting!! From my great grand father to my nephew they were all Charles Edward. My birth name was Dorean Mae Fryman. I haven't seen Dale since mid to late '80's. Of course his mother Virginia was married to one of my dads brothers. We moved to Alameda CA just before I was born in 1959. Several of my dads brothers and Vernestine lived in CA. There are many Fryman's in Levenworth as you well know. The name Charles goes back 4 or 5 generations when the name was actually Charley (sp). Interesting you are a Fryman now, as the name is in our family tree. I have been close to Larry Fryman but, I have not seen him since the late '80's to early '90's. I have lost contact and would like to be back in touch with him. Say hi to Dale and email me at dariarene@gmail.com.
