Descendants of Christophel Fuchs ~ GravenWiedt, Germany

Posted: 1 Jul 2001 11:06PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Fuchs, Fox
I am looking for information on Christophel Fuchs, I am the 13'th line of direct descendants. I am especially interested in finding his grave if anyone would be willing to do a look-up? I would like to know more about his wife Maria as well. If anyon has any information on my family, it would be greatly appreciated!

The information I have is as follows (I have a large file on his descendants down to my grandfather):

I have gone down 3 generations:

CHRISTOPHEL1 FUCHS was born Abt. 1608 in GravenWiedt, Germany, and died November 27, 1698 in Fahr. He married (1) MARIA. She was born 1609. He married (2) ANNA 1683 in Rengsdorf.

Notes for CHRISTOPHEL FUCHS:
The Fox Family originated in the area near Niederbieber in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany as the Fuchs family. The name was changed from Fuchs to Fox during the period from 1730 to the Revolutionary War days.
As far as has been ascertained, all the eligible Fox men served in the Tryon County Militia, mainly in the 2nd and 4th regiments during the revolution. Many of them were listed in the Battles on Oriskany, Klock's Field, Stone Arabia, etc. Although many families were hard hit by deaths, no Fox men seem to have been killed, only one wounded.

He married (2) ANNA CATHERINE NEITZERT March 22, 1682/83 in Niederbieber, Germany, daughter of JOHANNES NEITZERT and ANNA MARGARET. She was born Abt. 1658, and died March 06, 1706/07.

Notes for JOHANN PHILIP FUCHS:
After a bitterly cold winter of 1709 they went doen the Rhine River to Rotterdam starting early in the spring in the company of the Wagners, Bells, Neffs, etc. Per legal papers at Wied he left unpaid bills for materials and unpaid rent on the mill. After a wait they boarded a British Troop ship early in July, sailed for England about July 15. After a long and perilous sea voyage they arrived in New York harbor. Once he arrived at Livingston Manor, he was soon operating the grist mill. Livingston's deputy Commissioner Jean Cast called him "Pere Fuchs. a quick tempered old fellow who took no nonsense from anyone."

3. JOHN CHRISTOPHER3 FOX (JOHANN PHILIP2 FUCHS, CHRISTOPHEL1) was born January 06, 1683/84 in Niederbieber, Germany, and died 1767 in New York. He married JOHANNA ELIZABETH CURRING (KORSING) October 16, 1711 in West Camp, NY, daughter of LUDOLPH CURRING and OTILLA FREUNDT. She was born March 03, 1688/89 in Spielburg, Germany.

Notes for JOHN CHRISTOPHER FOX:
He was appointed "List Master" by the English, one of eleven chosen for each of the eleven ships going to the Colonies. After some 6 months in England the families went aboard the ship "Baltimore". No ships sailed from Either Portsmouth or Plymouth until 4/10/1710. Three months later they straggled into New York harbor from 6/14 to 7/10/1710. The Fox family stayed on either Nuttin Island or in New York City until between October and December when they went up the Hudson River to Livingston Manor. This time only 7 List Masters were chosen, one for each tar camp. He was chosen for Haysbury on the east side of the river (now called Germantown). A paper he signed about this time indicates that he could read and write. During 1711 he acted as captain of some 300 volunteers to fight the French. After this aborted campaign they were dismissed without pay and returned to find that their families had not been fed. He and 5 others went to the Schoharie Valley to buy land from the Indians in the winter of 1712. Later that year he and his brother William founded Fuchsdorf on Fox Creek (near present site of Village of Schoharie). THey soon thereafter erected a grist mill. He was considered the founder of the "Red Fox" line because of his stubborn and headstrong nature. Because of land title problems in Schoharie the family moved to lot #26 in Burnetsfield Patent on south side of the Mohawk River (presentday German Flats) on 4/30/1725.

Notes for JOHANN WILLIAM FOX:
He left Fuchsendorf in the Schoharie Valley ca 1723 and settled on lot #7 of the Francis Harrison Patent on Garoga Creek where he operated a grist mill and farmed. Per deed dated 7/9/1779 he left northern portion of the land to son Philip on condition he pay 1/2 of net profits of the grist mill to them as long as they lived. The 200 acre balance went to son George. The buildings were all burned down 10/19/1780 by Tories and Indians, but the Palatine Stone Church across the road did not get burned because the Nellis's who went to Canada had built it,. After the Revolutionary War was over the buildings were rebuilt
