Fuchs of Grossschönau, Austria

Hello,

I am trying to find any information someone might have on a FUCHS family from Grossschönau, Austria.

One of my wife's ancestors, Johan FUCHS, was born there on February 26, 1912. He left Austria after the Anschluss and was in Nicaragua by 1939. In Nicaragua he was known as Juan FUCHS HOLL. Because of Nicaraguan naming conventions, this means Johan/Juans mother's maiden name was HOLL.

If it is of any help, Johan/Juan's father was a painter of background sceneries for the theater in Austria. Johan/Juan was a painter in Nicaragua. Also, Johan/Juan's parents were supposedly of Tyrolean extraction.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can share any information on Johan Fuchs/Juan Fuchs Holl's family.

Dear resarcher,I doubt if this helps but one of my gr.,gr.,grandmothers was married to a Dunn(u-umlauted)in Germany after he died she married Abraham Peter. She had at least 4 children that I know of with Dunn and then two more with Peter. They emigrated from Seligenthal in the 1860s.This town is near Schmalkalden in Germany.I am descended from the second marriage. They settled in Eckley Pa.Karl Dunn(Dinn),a son from the first marriage was killed in an accident at Eckley,Pa ca.1888 and is buried in an over-grown cemetery nearby along with Abraham Peter.A brother,Bernhart Dinn is buried in Freeland,Pa.A Dinn sister,Caroline, married Karl Krause and there is also a connection to a Henrich Wald.I translated the German Church records from Eckley which were kept at St.Lukes Lutheran Church in Freeland.Bob Zimmerman-zim65riv@hazleton.net

I am in North Carolina. Interesting that you are in Wisconsin. My grandfather, Paul Julius Fuerstenau who was married to Mary Franchesca Fuchs was from Watertown, Wisconsin. His parents came to the US. through New York in 1857 on the Ship Humboldt from Hamburg, Germany. Frederick Wilhelm August Fuerstenau and Wilhelmina Johanna Gramzow Fuerstenau. My grandfather was born in 1866 in Watertown, the first of his siblings born in Wisconsin. Three older sisters and an older brother were born in Shamburg, Cook County, Illinois just outside of Chicago.

None of the names you have listed show up in my data base, but then once we get back to Brandenburg, Prussia (Germany) this get a little sketchy especially since Great Grandfathr Christian Fuchs lost his father when he was a very small baby and his mother remarried and came to the U.S. We can find out more about the Eickhardt and Boercht families that Fuchs. Christian was the only child born before his father was killed in a logging accident. When I get home this evening I will pull up the Fuchs file and see if I can give you some of the other Fuchs family names. I know there was Christian III and IV. There was a Charles Fuchs, too. Mary's brothers and nephew. Mom told me that a lot of the Fuchs change their names to Fox either because to make it seem more English or just because English languages speakers couldn't spell Fuchs and it sounded kind of like Fox.

When my daughter was in southern France about three years ago on a tour, she said they toured a huge perfume factory or center called Fuchs Perfum. This got me to wondering if the Fuchs were part of the French Huguenots who fled France into Prussia and Pomerania to escape persecution from the Catholic Church.

Mary/Marie Fucks/Fuchs/Fuks b. abt 1891 Lucina, Bohemia, Austria

Mary Fuchs arrived in the United States in 1907. I found a passenger list from 1907 naming a Marie Fuchs who came from Lucina, Bohemia. She seems to fit the description of a Mary Fucks (interesting sites come up when I look her up on Google...) who was the niece of James/Vaclav (possibly Wenzel) Haninger and/or his wife Mary/Marie. James and Marie were both born 1870 and lived in Chicago, Illinois, USA. They came from Bohemia as well.

Does anyone know the parentage/grandparentage of Marie Fucks b. 1891-ish? I'm not certain whether James's wife was a Fuchs, or James or Mary's sister married a Fuchs, or whatever.

The Haningers have been a dead end for years.

I have Fuchs on my mother's side of the family for certain (her maiden name is Fox). Haninger is on my father's side.

Hello Janine,
I realize your posting is older and I don't know if you have received any additional information since you posted it. But I think I may have some information for you that might be interesting to you
First, Zellhausen is located southeast of Frankfurt, Germany. It was incorporated with the nearby comunity of Mainflingen in recent years and therefore is now called Mainhausen.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Mainhausen+Germany&a...

I know Dr. Fuchs. He and his brother Hannes were friends with my grandparents and I remember meeting him and his lovely wife in the early 1960s when both came for a visit to Zellhausen. I remember that Dr. Fuchs had built a bungalow style home on the outskirts of the community as a vacation home. I believe he and his wife lived in the New York area where he had his practice.
His brother Hannes had a Gasthaus, i.e. pub/hotel on the Hauptstrasse.
I lived in Zellhausen until I was 12 years old. During those days it was mostly a small farming community with about 1800 inhabitants. Today that number has increased to close to 10,000. I don't know what more you might like to know, but I'd be happy to share what I know.
If you would like to email me you can emrys54@gmail.com.
Mary, if you are still looking for Fuchs relatives I have some information. My husband is a Fuchs (Fox) on his mother's side. He vaguely recalls Fuchs had a farm in Saunemin, Illinois which is near the larger town of Pontiac, IL.

His Fuchs (Fox) people were ancestors of James Fox and Agatha Weishaar from Germany. We never knew where in Germany. They are all buried somewhere near Chicago Heights, IL. I also know that if you look up the Weishaar name from Will County, IL you will find there were a ton of their people.

I've tried to get more info from my elderly mother-in-law but she doesn't know much. I have some info from one of her cousins but the handwriting is poor which my husband says is Fox family trait despite their being taught to write by nuns.

I'll try my mother-in-law again.

Best wishes - G.

I'm trying to find any information about my FUCHS ancestors. The family is said to be from Germany. They settled in Germantown/Philadelphia. The earliest name I have is Johan Michael FUCHS who married Elizabeth VORBACH or FORPAUGH. The marriage was about 1765. The FUCHS and VORBACH families were in the building business. Their children included Samuel, Anna Marie and others. The name was Anglicized to FOX around 1800.

My maternal grandmother was Maria Franchesca (Mary)Fuchs. Her father was Christian Fuchs II from Brandenburg, Prussia. The family came to the U.S. in 1872 and settled in Faribault, Rice, Minnesota. Christian was born April 18, 1845 in Esslingen, Brandenburg, Germany. The Fuchs were very successful farmers in Faribault. It has been told through the family that Christian's father, Budner Christian Fuchs died when Christian was just a few months old in a logging accident. His mother remarried and came to the United States. She was Dorothea Eickhardt and married August Borchert. There were several Borchert children born so he had several half brothers and sisters. However, he was the only child of Budner Christian Fuchs. Christian never changed his name. He is buried in Faribault as Christian Fuchs. It is interesting because I have a picture of him and I believe he looks like Santa Claus.

Hi kjmeidinger!

Yes, chances are we are probably distant cousins! The Fuchs are from S/N Dakota. I am a Lehmann. Three FUCHS daughters married three Lehmann sons. The bloodline is really close, same for lots of Germans from Russia. We are also directly related to NEUBAUERS, JACOBERS and GEBHARDTS. And indirectly to other German-Russian families such as the OPP, HIEB, EBERLE, BERTSCH, HOLT and many others.

We are maninly from the Odessa, Ukraine region. I believe our family was one of the first to head East, living there about 150yrs. Moreover, I believe not all of the Fuchs were able to escape before the reign of terror from war and Stalin. (Possible FUCHS in Siberia, Kaz, and South America as well--from exile and escape)

Please contact me at my personal email: bbgkitties@hotmail.com.

If I don't respond, it probably means that I didn't receive your email. Look forward to chatting with you...

Gracie

Yes. The Fuchs family were one of the first German families to migrate to Russia (Ukraine)--right before the great migration initiated by Catherine the Great. I am a direct relative of many Fuchs, Jacob, Christ and Johann. My gr grandma is Pauline Fuchs of Richardton, SD.

Gracie

Fuchs in the Rheinberg/Bislich region emigrating to Pittsburgh

Hello,
I'm searching for any information that may be available regarding my ancestors from the Rhineland region of Germany. Joseph Fuchs married Catharina Van Treek in Bislich around 1847. His son, Theodore Jacob, married Agnes Kellerbach in Rheinberg in 1879. Theodore and Agnes came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the mid 1880's. There's a story that's been passed down through the family that the Fuchs' that remained in Germany owned a chain of department stores or furniture stores. Any information someone may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Don Fuchs

Fuchs in Wisconsin-Green Lake County area

I am looking for information or other descendants from the Fuchs family lived in the Princeton, Wisconsin area.

I am descended from Bertha Fuchs (1854-1939), who married August Lueptow. I believe her parents were William (or possibly Henry) Fuchs and Louise (probably Boetcher)Fuchs. Louise's mother's name is probably Catherine (based on census records showing Catherine Boetcher as mother in law).

Siblings of Bertha may include Bessie, Amelia, Mary, Herman and William Carl.

In some records the name is also spelled "Fox".

I would like to connect with others who are descended from this family to share information and research. I would definitely be pleased to hear from others who have additional information regarding earlier generations.

Forgot something. The service also stated that this was a Jewish surname in the Franconian region of Bavaria. Since in the 19th century people were very rarely allowed to marry out of their religious heritage, I would assume that if the relative was Jewish, they also married another Jewish person. Lots of marriages were arranged at that time and the Jewish community is the most strict about interfaith marriages in my opinion.

according to an online service the Fuchs name originated in Bavaria in Medieval times from people living mainly in Franconia. They were a noble family in those times and it seems that the Fuchs name has even in the 20th century been linked to German politics and the world bank finances.

She was approximately 18 years old when I was born in 1964 in Frankfurt where I was asopted by military parents after the mandatory 6 month waiting period. She also had a daughter that was approximately 18 months old at the time. From what my parents told me she was associating with an american serviceman thus that is where I suspect the Harrington name comes from.I don't know if she ever immigrated to the US as an army wife or if she remained in Germany. Any help in the most efficient way of looking searching for her would be appreciated.

Several Fuchs/Fox researchers have had the DNA tests done to confirm our ancestry. We have roots in Germany but not sure exactly where. We are from the line of Jacob Fuchs (born 1703) and came to the US (Bucks Co, PA) in 1739. He was possibly married to Lizzie Moyer, also from Germany. They had 5 sons (John, George, David, Nicholas, Jacob), some born in Germany. Does our Jacob fall into any of your Fuchs/Fox lines?

George Fuchs is from Szabadi, Hungary and Marie Gretzbach(1900) is from Salzbrunn, Germany. I believe that Marie's father was Franz Gretzbach (1865) from HaultsmanDorf and that George's father was Andreas Fuchs from Udvari, Tolni.
