I am researching my family and have a picture of a tombstone of my great-grandfather, Morris (moshe or moishe)Fudem(Fudim). The tombstone lists his father as David and I am wondering if there is a connection. My family was from Bilgoraj and Frampol Poland but that area used to be the Ukraine. I would be very interested in any information you have to share.

Using my last name has taken on a whole new meaning. Thank you so much for your reply. You've given me so much information which will enable me to trace the family. Do you think we are related, or were all of the tailors in Russia named Fudim because of their trade?

Anne Foodim

Spelling and Russo Poland origin

A pleasure to receive you message. The spelling is not definitve. On my father's citizen ship papers it was spelled FUDYM. On my mother's citizenship paper it was spelled FUDIM. Generally it was spelled acording to how the naturalization officer thought it should be spelled. My mother's name was Anna and I liked it so well I named my eldest daughter Anna too.
You must remeber that Poland as a country did not exist until it was created by the league of nations after WW 1. My parents would refer to the homeland as Russo-Poland. It was under the control of the Tzaar of Russia. That area consisted primarily of provinces which still exist. My parents provence was Lublim in the town of Bilgoraj. This was only one of about 2 dozen such contiguous settlements known as The Pale. The Pale of Settlement was the restricted area where by law Jews were allowed to live. Outside that area Jews were not permitted to live except by special exemption. By the year 1885 there were about 4 million jews living in the Pale of Settlement. More information is clearly presented in easy to read graphical maps written by Martin Gilbert and titled Jewish History Atlas.
Each town from that Pale of Settlement establisehd a burial society after a significant number emigrated to America. These cemeterys are predominately located in Brooklyn and Queens in New York City. Their records have a vast history of family relationships usually written in Yiddish which I can't read.
Regards
Bernard Fudim

Wow! It was really strange reading your explanation of Foodim/Fudim. I'm the daughter of Samuel Foodim. I've been asked this question for the past 60 years. I know that my grandparents came from Russia and the ships manifest uses Fudim. I'm trying to find out when the name here in New York was changed. I can only guess that perhaps when the boys registered for school...or when the boys began working.

I'm new at doing this research, but I believe that Fudim became Foodim when the boys went to school in New York. I have a cousin David that is named after your great grandfather. I don't know what my gradfarther's name was, but my gradmother from Russia, was named Rose. My father, Samuel Foodim, was born in NYC in 1910, so I believe that they arrived in New York before that date.

I know they settled in New York, on the lower east side and I'm in the process of trying to find out the address and other information. Unfortuantely, all of my immediate family is deceased, but I'm trying to go through all of the papers that have been passed on to me.

I am researching the family history of my wife, Joanne Foodim. Joanne's father's family have very little information about their background. We know that her grandfather Abraham lived in or near Odessa, that his father's name was Leb and that he had two sisters named Sonya and Ettie. However, we're not sure--in fact don't think--that his name was Foodim before Ellis Island--the tradition is that the family name was Skolnick and that they adopted Foodim in order to be sponsored by an uncle, Sam Foodim, who owned a store in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Joanne's parents and uncles live in New York City and Long Island.

I have a photograph of the family in Odessa that I would be happy to email to you. All best wishes,

Rob Forbes
