I have read in some places that Haney Noble Fugate (born 1790) was called Moonbeam and blue cherokee. Now there was the blue holly clan among the cherokee. It is an interesting note to that mary polly keith ritchie (born 1755) is also know as mahela moonbeam. My wondering is if it is possible that they were sister's or a daughter?

Well, let's start with what you do know:
1- when were you born?
2- about when was your grandmother and/or great-grandmother born (approximately.) Figure it out - how old were you when you knew them, or when one of them died? Within 5 or 10 years will help.
3-Where were any of them living in a census year (1930 or 1920 or 1910 or 1900.)
4-about when or where did they die?

Any close guess is better than searching 200 years of Fugates!

Mary Fugate

Margaret Fugate of Clay Co. IN was my husband's great-aunt. His grandfather was John Wesley Fugate, b. 1840. John W. and Margaret were 2 of the children of Jehiel Fugate (1816 - 1868) and his first wife, Rachel Harp (1818-1857). Jehiel was the oldest son of Martin Fugate and his wife Mariah. Martin was born in Russell Co. VA in 1789, lived in Claiborne Co. TN and moved from there to Laurel Co. KY. He died in Rockcastle Co. KY in 1855. Several of his children moved to Clay Co. IN.
Jehiel married a second time right after Rachel's death, to Mary Laughlin with whom he had 5 more children.

Jehiel's brother, Levi also moved to Clay Co. and had a large family there.

John W. left Clay Co. right after his marriage in 1869 and settled in Kansas where his uncle William Fugate had already settled.

Martin (1789-1855) was a son of William Fugate who died in 1802 in Russell Co. VA. He was one of the Fugate brothers
discussed in Dr. David Faris' book "The Fugate Family of Russell Co. VA"

Mary D. Fugate

FUGATE

I really hope someone can help me out here. There is NOTHING about my family that I know of. My grandmother was Nancy Ann Fugate- Robbins. Her mother was Victoria Fugate when she was married to Sam Fugate but she died Victoria Dunne. I don't have her maiden name. My grandmother had a twin sister, last known address Springfield Ohio(Lindy was what we called her) She also had a sister Eula and a brother Russell. There were more, but I don't have their names. Victoria was born in Salyerville Kentucky, or so I am told. The last known address for Sam Fugate was Lima Ohio where, I am told he has other children.

I am also told that I have Native American Heritage, but that has not been proven. I am particularly curious about knowing this information, but I mostly would just like to know where I came from.

If anyone has any information on this I would be so appreciative. I just know so little about that side of my family and would like to know.

I'm not sure we will ever be able to "prove" some of Jonathan & Lettie's children.... missing deeds, wills, death certificates, poor education of descendants. The following is my best guestimation of descendants, compiled from census data and other's research.

Jonathan and Lettie are my 5th great grandparents. Buried in Open Fork Cemetery, Grave May Not Be Marked. Race: 1/2 Native American-not proven.

Jesse was either a son or grandson of Jonathan (who would have been age 64 when Jesse was born), although there is no evidence of an intervening generation.

On Aug 18, 1846 when Jesse was 24, he married Clearinda BRADLEY, F, daughter of George BRADLEY, M (Mar 3, 1785-Mar 31, 1874) & Susan Brown HALE, F (1803-aft 1870). Born on Feb 6, 1825 in Perry Co, Kentucky. Clearinda died in Breathitt Co, Kentucky, on Mar 19, 1906; she was 81. Cynthia, F (1860-)

9. John FUGATE (Jonathan1), M. Born in 1825.

On Mar 12, 1858 when John was 33, he married Agness MULLINS, F, daughter of Ambrose MULLINS, M (abt 1803-) & Marra (Mattie) MULLINS, F (abt 1804-), in Breathitt Co, KY. Born abt 1840 in Kentucky.

They had the following children:
i.	Nancy Margaret, F (1857-)
ii.	Jonathan, M (1859-)
iii.	Isaac, M (1860-)

10. Ibby FUGATE (Jonathan1), F. Born abt 1825.

Ibby is not a proven d/o Jonathan but circumstances point to that conclusion

Email from Jeannette Pierce 6/2006:
....Ibby is supposed to have married Jeremiah Williams. Well anyway, she says she believes Annies’ parents are Jeremiah and Ibby Williams. They are listed on the 1850 census with two children, Annie and Elijah. She says Ibby died of fever between 1850 and 1860 and Jeremiah must have died too, because in 1860 they are not on the census, but the children are living in the HH of Lorenzo Dow Smith and his wife Sallie (Fugate) who was a sister of Ibby. She has no proof of their marriage but she does have John Williams will that lists Jeremiah as his son......

Here is the children that Mary Fugate says are Jonathans children:
Martin-left country
Jessie married Clarinda Bradley
John married Aggie Mullins
Sallie married Lorenzo Dow Smith
Betty married Andy Wilson
Katie married John Noble
Polly married Ben Clemons
Hannah-no spouse listed
Ibbie-no spouse listed
According to Mary D. Fugate these were the children of Jonathan
She also said John may have had a son name Andrew

So its going to be another theory abt. Annie, that may be hard to prove, but it the only one I have found that makes sense....Annie and Elijah were in the HH of Sallie Smith, so she thinks Sallie took the children when her sister died.........

Ibby married Jeremiah WILLIAMS, M. Born abt 1825.

They had the following children:
i.	Annie, F (1844-)
ii.	Elijah, M (1846-)

11. Katherine (Katie) FUGATE (Jonathan1), F. Born abt 1828 in Perry Co, Kentucky. Katherine (Katie) died in Cow Creek, Owsley Co, Kentucky, on Mar 25, 1880; she was 52.

Jonathan & Lettie may be too old to be her parents (Lettie would have been 51 at her birth - possible, but not likely) They may be grandparents, if not parents.

They had the following children:
i.	Rebecca Jane, F (~1849-1912)
ii.	Rachel, F (1850-1934)
iii.	Ira, M (1852-1927)
iv.	Granville, M (1855-1927)
v.	Elijah, M (1857-)
vi.	Harrison, M (1858-1935)
vii.	Nancy Jane, F (1859-1929)
viii.	John Anderson, M (1862-1930)
ix.	Ellis, F (1864-1928)
x.	Martha, F (1868-1931)
xi.	George Washington (Bud), M (1873-1934)

Re: Robert Fugate/ of Bristow Oaklahoma

Hi, I'm Calvin Joseph Fugate, son of Calvin Leroy Fugate, grand son of Logan Fugate (maried to Dorathy Fugate), and great grand son of the Calvin Fugate you are asking about. I have tons of pictures and the family Bible of my grand mother and grand father, whom have both passed away now. My dad can perhaps answer more for me if I ask him. though Logan and Dorathy, my grandparents told me of much that they knew. See, as we know the story, Calvin Fugate, my great grandfather was somewhere in his 60's or 70's as I heard, though I can check for his DOB to see, when he took his third wife. I understand they had three or four childred, Logan, Robert, Woody and can't recall without researching if there was a fourth. Woody was the oldest i think. He lived in Valley Springs, CA spending some time there as a sheriff. I remember fishing in a boat with him somewhat vaguely as a child. My dad knew him well and was fond of him. I know that Calvin Fugate died shortly after my grandpa was born, and he and his brothers went ot the equivilant of an ofphanage, which placed then with some farmer to work and live on his farm till he was old enough to set out on his own. The nuns there actually changed his given name which was Floyd Logan fugate to Logan Floyd Fugate due to the gangster "Pretty Boy Floyd", who was causing trouble at the time. Great grandma married again without the kids in tow, to my other great grandpa, father of Dorathy Fugate (don't have last names in front of me, and I can research them. Logan and Dorathy were taken with each other, and had no blood relationship, and were eventually married. I know the name Robert Fugate, though have heard the least stories of him. My dad would know more. I've heard so many more stories, please email me with some specific questions you have, and I'll see if dad or the pile of family photos and notes my grandmother wrote down help. let me know your name and contact info too please. Eric, you are my cousin, I remember you and Stephanie, though have lost contact with you long ago. please get in touch. calvinfugate @ gmail . com

The information given for the parents of Floyd Fugate is wrong.
Floyd was the son of James Monroe "Roe" and Elizabeth (Sprinkle)Fugate. Floyd was born in Harlan County, not Leslie County. However, there is another Floyd Fugate who was born in Leslie County and with about the same birth year, so be careful when researching the two Floyd Fugate's.

I realize this post is old, but it could lead someone to attatche incorrect information to their family tree.

In "St. John's & St. George's Parish Registers, 1696 - 1851" compiled by Henry C. Peden (1987), the word "born" is used, not baptised or Christened. These three entries refer to your Dulany question (first # is page in the book, second # is page in the microfilm he transcribed)

16/39: Dennis Dulany, son of Thomas and Sarah, born May 28, 1731

46/113: Easter Fugate, daughter of James and Ann, born March 15, 1736. [Note: Her brother John was born March 15, 1735, so it's possible there was a transcription error and they were twins.]

91/200: Dennis Dulany and Easter Fugate married January 23, 1749.

So when they married, Dennis was not yet 18 and Easter was nearly 13 or possibly 14. In any event, it is clear that both of them were very young when they married. This transcription doesn't indicate double-dating, so I can't be sure.

She's the only choice you have in the MD parish records for that time. Probably the parish records are for baptism rather than birth (the original I saw was very dim) but we really can't assume that ages for marriages were the same then as they are now.

The birth of Ester Fugate of HARFORD Co. MD is recorded in St. John's Parish, Baltimore Co. MD records as one of the children of "James and Ann".

Francis Fugate of Wythe & Pulaski Cos. VA was born about 1776 in Virginia. He was the oldest son of Randolph (d. ca 1814) and his wife Charity. Court records in Wythe Co. prove this relationship and make it clear that Francis was the only man named Fugate who had children born about 1810. Francis died after the 1860 census of Pulaski Co. VA (when he is listed as age 84)
I published quite a bit about Francis in the Fugate Family Newsletter from original records.

There was a Sarah Fugate, probable daughter of Francis (son & grandson of Randolphs) & Caledonia, who married a Henry Compton in Montgomery Co. VA on 20 Nov 1832 when she was "age 21" (Montgomery Co. VA marriage records).

I have two Sarahs born about 1730: one was the daughter of James and Ann of Baltimore Co. MD, St. John's Parish, was b. 11 Nov 1732. I have no marriage for her so she could have married a Henry Compton. (St. Johnn's Parish records published.)

The other Sarah was the wife of John Fugit when they sold their land in Shenandoah Co. VA and moved to southwest VA.
Her maiden name unknown, although might have been McCarty.

Mary D. Fugate

Frank -
I don't collect Fugate material any more unless it is very early and a new discovery (to Fugate-hunters). You didn't provide enough info for me to help you find the John ("1828-1901") you are looking for. All the census seems to agree that he was born in Ohio, and I don't find any reference to KY so far among the censuses. Can you provide more location information? It looks to me like Editha came from what is now Hancock Co., WV, which puts her very close to the Fugates of northeast Ohio, but I don't have enough to go on.
There is no connection at all between your (b. Ohio) Fugates and the "Blue Fugates" of KY, although everyone seems to want to connect to them.
If you want my help, please provide more "where and when" info for any time in their lives, and I'll try to track them down for you.
Mary Fugate

Martin Fugate (1789-1855) War of 1812

I am trying to find the military history of Martin Fugate during the war of 1812. I did find a roll call list in Capt. Michael Glaves' Company, Scott's Regiment, Kentucky Militia. He enlisted as a Sergeant.

from there I know Michael Glaves was wounded at the Battle of Raisin. I can't find any list of the survivors to see if Martin was among them. I know he lived well past the war of 1812 but am unsure if he was in this battle.

for those who don't know, the battle of Raisin was a huge slaughter. Out of the 500 American's that were involved only 20 or so survived. For the rest of the war the Battle cry of "Remember the Raisin" was used for the entire Ky militia.

The only other reference I could find was he testified on the behalf of a fellow soldier that died during the battle.
Here is the copy and paste:

Pendleton County Order Book I - December, 1837
*THOMAS LAWSON Declaration: Maria Lawson and John M. Lawson, the widow and only child of Thomas Lawson who was an enlisted soldier in the late war. Statements given by Martin Fugate, Reuben McCarty and Samuel Wilson, soldiers of the late war. Thomas Lawson was killed as a soldier enlisted for the late war. Said Lawson "came to his death while in the service at the battle of the Raison." Thus they are applying for a pension. (Note) Thomas may have served during the War of 1812)

Any help you can give me would greatly be appreciated!
Brook Fugate Kornegay

Hello Cousin,

I don't have a lot of answers to your questions, but perhaps I can assist you a bit. As for the Westermans' service in the Confereracy:
John (Jack) Wilson enlisted in Company C, Arkansas 12th Cavalry, Wright's Regiment as a Private I do not know the dates of his service. Moses Fugate (my great-grandfather) enlisted as a Private in Company H, 16th Arkansas Infantry, Monroe's Regiment. I do not know the dates of his service, but know he was captured and taken prisoner on October 22, 1864, at Independence, MO. He was released on May 23, 1865. I assume you have the record for Clifford Newton?
William P. enlisted in Company G, 4th Arkansas Infantry, 4th Regiment. I do not know the dates of his service. I have not found a service record for Marcus Lafayette. Would he have been too young to serve?

John (Jack) Wilson is buried in a pasture outside of Cross Plains, TX. I was there and saw the stone several years ago. At the time I was not doing research on the family, so do not have a picture or would not know how to find the grave again. There were 4 or 5 graves under a large oak tree with natural stones marking them, and if I remember correctly, his initials were hand carved on the stone. He was believed to have been killed by Indians. I thinkk some of his decendents are still in the Cross Plains area.

Moses Fugate died in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, but his grave has never been found. It is believed by some that he is in an unmarked grave in the College Hill Cemetery. I was in Pike County last October for the first time ever. We visited the College Hill Cemetery. The only marked graves of relations we recognized were Sara and Thomas Kidd. I did not see the grave of Clifford Newton.

I don't have any information on where William P. is buried.

We were shown another cemetery in Pike County. Marcus Lafayette was buried there. I do not remember the name of the cemetery, but will try to find out for you. His grave was marked with a nice stone.

You can contact me at ejcman@charter.net and maybe we can exchange additional information.

It was good hearing from you.

Betty

Mary thank you for the info on the Fugate family. If Ester was b in 1736 & got marr in 1749 that would make her 13 years old. She must have marr later than that. If you run across any more info let me know.
Ollie

MD Fugate:

It appears that you are the local expert on the Fugate family.

My g-grandmother was Amanda Lorene Fugate, dau #2 of John & Elisha Fugate, Putnam, MO. If you're interested, I can load scans of my data onto my web site and you can download it and include it in your records (needless to say, no charge). I have the 'stats' pages from their Family Bible (c. 1890), news clippings of their (Amanda Lorene & J. A. Durbin) divorce (c. 1885), a 1950's news article on the Blue Fugates of KY (re; a genetic situation,) and other papers.

I also have a family photo that I suspect are the Putnam County Fugates of the late 1800s ... would be nice to know if I'm correct and what their names were.

Let me know if you (or any other Fugates) would be interested, and I'll post the web site URL after I've uploaded everything (would take a few days).

Frank M.
Dear Betty,

I too am descended from Clifford D. and Frances, but through Clifford Newton (1838-1885). I am currently trying to compile all the information on the Westermans' service in the Confederacy. I know Clifford was in the war. Do you know if Moses, Marcus Lafayette, William F., or John Wilson were? Also, I have a dickens of a time trying to locate the burial places of all these people. I will be visiting Arkansas this week and as of yet only know of Clifford Newton's burial place in College Hill Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Any help you could provide on Confederate service or burial place would be greatly appreciated.

Cheryl -- The only Sarah Fugate in my database was born in 1786, the daughter of Randolph Fugate Jr. and granddaughter of Randolph Sr b 1715-1720 and d after 1776. However, I do not have all the children of R Sr in my database, so he may have had a Sarah too.

Steve

Jonathan Fugate & Lettie Wells -- Proven Children?

Searching for information regarding the proven children of Jonathan Fugate and his wife, Lettie Wells.

Sometime around 1900, a "Dr. Bock" compiled a list of Jonathan & Lettie's children, apparently based on oral tradition. However, some of the children Dr. Bock listed have been proven not to belong to Jonathan and Lettie Fugate.

Among one of the children Dr. Bock mentioned in his list was a "Betty Fugate" who married "Andy Wilson." I believe this refers to Andrew Wilson and his wife, Betty Fugate. I believe Andrew & Betty were the parents of my third great-grandmother, Frances Wilson (1835-1897), wife of Elihu Prater (1830-1916) of Morgan County, Kentucky.

If anyone has any information on Jonathan & Lettie's "proven" children, please let me know. I would very much like to confirm the parentage of "Betty Fugate," wife of "Andy Wilson."

Jesse L. Stamper
Leecorydon(at)juno.com

Barbara,
Sorry to reply so late. I changed email and never got your message until today. Yes, Argus was my grandfather's brother. I have met your father Milton before at a Fugate reunion in Merced many years ago. I know that Argus is buried in Modesto, CA. I was at his funeral. I live in Newman, CA but grew up in Modesto, CA. I know we are in the same family. My father (Robert Newton Fugate) died Aug 8, 1978 and is buried in Bakersfield, CA. I only really met a few members of the Fugate family due to the fact my parents divorced when I was 5 yrs old. We (my mother and younger brother: Warren Bradley Fugate)and myself lived in Modesto, CA and my father lived in Bakersfield. My brother died on May 26, 2000 in Modesto, CA at the age of 40. He died suddenly at work from a heart condition he didn't know he had. Please contact me with any other info on our Fugate family line if possible. My new email is: sherawil@comcast.net. I remarried 1/1/00 and my name is now Sheila Fugate Wilmouth. My prior married name was Berdion.

Velda is buried alongside her second husband Marion Bartlett and baby Betty Jean. I believe William is buried in an unmarked grave. Caril was paroled in 1976 (not 1978) and moved to Lansing, Michigan (not Colorado).
