Zella Fugitt

Does anyone know anything of a Zella Fugitt aka: Zella Nichols, Zella Sizemore, or Zella Edwards?

This person is my 90 yr old grannys mother. My granny's last memory of her was when she was about 4 years old. I have my granny's parents marriage certificate (from Lawarance County, Ohio) and it list Zella's parents as John Fugitt and Jane Nichols. Zella's DOB as May 19, 1901 and place of birth as Pike Co. Kentucky. When married to my grannys father they lived in Huntington, WV. After Zella left my granny and her father she married a guy "across the river" in Ohio, the guys name is "Hunk" Edwards who apparently was wealthy and owned several business. My granny heard she eventually left him and went to Kentucky. Thank you for any information you may have :)

My line is off of Francis Cooper, father of Malinda Cooper who married Townsend. I show 11 children born to Townsend and Malinda. Elizabeth, Nancy Eliza, Frances, Benjamin, Rachel, Thursa, Hiram, Braxton, Sarshall, Paulina and Simeon. Sarshall married Mary Thorp and I show 5 children born to this family.
I can't locate my information right now, but there was also a Francis Fugitt who lived in Washington Co, Va on the same land that Francis Cooper lived. I'm sure if you do a search that information will turn up. The Fugitts are intertwined in the Cooper line.

Are you sure Thirsa Fugitt is Hiram's daughter and Chism's sister? "An Arkansas Connection" which is online, lists her as a daughter of Hiram's father and mother, Townsend Fugate (Fugitt) and Malinda Cooper. This Thirsa, born 1792 in Mercer Co., Kentucky, was said to have married someone name Daniel Durban. Daniel and Thirsa (Fugitt) Durban were said to have married before 1819 and in Missouri. This was also alluded to in a post on Genealogy.com dated 22 Mar 1999, by mary D. Fugate.

Re: FUGITT, Congrave Jackson & LEE Elizabeth (Fugitt) Tulare CA

Have you tried the Tulare City Library's Genealogy Room? They have an excellent genealogy collection, partially funded by the Sequoia Genealogy Society.

I've also been following these families, in an effort to prove the parents of my Samuel Still, who m. Marnissa (Mary) Burnam (a.k.a. Burnham) 3 Feb 1853 in Holt, Clay, MO (very close to Howard Co., MO). He lived next door to Joseph Still and his family in 1850 at Pettis, Platte, MO. I think these two men were brothers.

Samuel and Joseph Still were two years apart in age, with Samuel born about 1814 and Joseph, about 1812. Both records gave KY as their b. place, though in latter records, Samuel is sometimes shown as b. in MO. Joseph Still's full name was Joseph Fugitt Still. He m. Rachel French Fugitt 24 May 1808 in Gerrard Co., KY, dau. of Townsend Fugate and Malinda Cooper. Joseph took his family out to CA before 1860, where they lived at Elkhorn, San Joaquin Co. The 1880 census shows them at Liberty, CA.

Joseph Fugitt Still's parents seem to have been Joseph W. Still, b. abt. 1786 in Mercer Co., KY, and Rachel French Fugitt (Fugate), b. 9 Mar 1790 in Mercer Co., KY. They were m. at Gerrard Co, KY on 24 May 1808. He d. Oct 1814 in Howard Co., MO, said to have been killed by Indians. She d. 23 Mar 1869 at Rockport, Atchison, MO.

Joseph W. Fugitt and Rachel French Fugitt appear to have had two other children, as well: Thursa Still, b. betw. 1808-1809, who m. Louis B. Thorp 18 Feb 1824 in Howard Co., MO;and Elizabeth Still, b. 1811, who m. Thomas Jackson Thorp in 1831 in Howard Co., MO. The Thorps were sons of Josiah Thorpe and a woman called Nancy.

Anyway, it appears that a number of families moved from the Garrard Co, KY area to the Platte area of MO in the first part of the 19th century. It also appears that a number of their descendants went to CA, at least several to Liberty, CA. A full survey of these families, where they came from and to whence they went would be very useful. I'm in the process of doing part of that job.

Howard Franklin Fugitt Jr. was my father's mother's brother. 1920 census puts him in Phila, PA; 1930 in Cecil, MD. I found Howard's WWII Army enlistment record at http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&rid... . Have been trying to find documents related to his service and death. All I have to go on the statement of his mother, Rebecca Elizabeth McQuistian Fugitt, to my mother that he died 9 Dec 1944 in the battle of Hurtgen Forest in Germany.

Howard Franklin Fugitt Sr. was born 24 Jan 1885 in Phila, PA and married 31 Aug 1906 in Wilmington, DE (a secret elopement). 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records show him in Phila; 1930 in Cecil, MD. WWI registration document dated 12 Sep 1918 and WWII registration doc dated 27 Apr 1942. His wife, Rebecca Elizabeth McQuistian was born 12 Apr 1885 in Phila and died 4 Feb 1982 in Phila, although is buried in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh. Would love to get pictures of these headstones if you have them.

I believe he married Molly and his childred were Jesse Jr., Juinta, and Daniel D. (1928-1983)who married Mary L. and their child was named Mary Ellen Fugitt Degarmo. Does this sound right to you? I do know that my father's siblings were Jessie, Ella F. Charles Andrew, Robert Erwin, Ollie, Viola, Jewel, Dan and Claude B.

That could very well be, I suppose. My Grandfather was Daniel D. Fugitt. I know that he was married to someone before he married my Grandmother. He had three children with his first wife. They are Daniel, Jesse (J.R./Ray), and Wanita. If I'm not mistaken my Dad said that he had an Uncle George.

One of my uncles is Daniel Fugitt and he was married to Molly. However, he was born in the 1890's. Could he be your grandfather? My father was George Fugitt. There were 10 brothers and sisters. Please let me know if you think there might be a connection. Thank you. Linda

You may have all the information you want by now; however, if you are still looking out there, Robert Erwin Fugitt is my uncle. My father was his youngest brother George William Fugitt. There were 10 children. There parents were William Benjamin Fugitt and Mary Ann "Mollie" Morris Fugitt. One of Roberts relatives shared a great deal of information on his desendents. If you like I will share it with you. I think you are the daughter of Martha, Karen or Deborah. In addition to Lonnie and Hubert, Dewey had a sister named Lora. They are all gone now, with Hubert's passing in 2008. I have a photo of Dewey with my grandfather, Herman Jackson, taken about 1920.

Hello Marja,
I would love any information you are able to share with me and I would very much like to see the obit. I'm afraid I have very little on Molly and William. A few memories as a very young child. Jessie was the oldest and my father the
youngest. Mostly, I remember Miss May his second wife and their children; who were more my father's age. Which of their children is your grandparent? Maybe, I remember them. I do have 8-10 photoes of Molly and William and their children. If you wish, I could copy them and mail them to you. I would scan them and attach them to an e-mail. Not sure of the guality when I scan them, however. You are welcome to use my e-mail. lrhalcomb@verizon.com. Marja, I really envey your trip to Salt Lake CIty. Hope to hear from you again.
Hi Linda,

My name is Marja Fugitt. Jessie F. is my ggrandfather. I am currently working on his mother - the Mary Ann (Mollie) Morriss line. I have a copy of her obituary from 1954 I found in a scrap book that belonged to my grandmother. The obit. lists her sons, daughters and three of her surviving sisters.
I also found Mary Ann age 16 - listed as wife to William Fugitt on the Ellis Texas 1880 US Census.

I am interested in any information you may have on her family line. I plan to go to Salt Lake City in few months (huge genealogical library there) to do more research there, but do not want to waste my time following the wrong line.

I have done the Fugitt line a ways back if you would like this information or have any you can add to it, that would be great. Pictures would be nice as well. I have one I was told is Mollie – when she was an older woman – looks Indian? I have many more pictures of her grandchildren.

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your posting.
Robert E. Fugitt was my uncle's name and I thought his wife's name was Seenee...maybe that was just the way I remembered it from childhood. They lived for many years on a farm in Greenville, Texas where they both died. They had a number of children and the sons all looked like him. My father, his youngest brother passed away in 1980 and I attened Robert's furnel with my mother in Greenville, a few years later. Their father was William Benjammin Fugitt born in Limestone County, Tx in 1857 and died July 11, 1933 and buried in Roseland in San Antionia, Tx. #30639. He lived in Boerne, Tx. in 1933. He married Molly Ann Morris born on August 10, 1864 in Ok. and died on September 8, 1954. I understand she was half Indian. At the time of her death whe was living with us and I was 5yrs. old. She is buried in Grove Hill Memorial Cembetary in Dallas, Tx. next to my parents. The name of their children are Jessie F., Robert E., Claude B., Ollie, Jewel, Ella Vienna, Dan, Charles Andrew born 10-11-1887, and my father George William born 11-19-1904 and died 10-5-1980. No one is living. Hope this is helpfull. I would appreciate any family information. By the way, my name is Linda.

You can write to me directly at lem.fugitt@gmail.com.

Actually, I don't have that much information on our branch of the Fugitt's prior to my grandfather (Lemuel Alvin Fugitt) who apparently was the black sheep of the family. I do have some photos and have recently made contact with the grandchildren of my grandfather's brother. They have quite a bit more information on the family history.

Red hair does pop-up on our side. My daughter, Christy, is a red head. Many of the rest of us have red highlights - my beard (when I had it) had quite a bit of red.

I assume your father was probably with Sunkist since they have the longest established citrus relationship with the Japanese. I use them as a positive example of doing international business in my consulting business here.

Talk to you soon,

Lem

Hello: This will probably date me a bit, but my Great Grandfather was born in 1839. His name was Nathaniel Brady Fugitt. His father's name was Joseph Thomas Fugitt as was his Grandfather's. They all lived in the DC area for about 100 years. Joseph T. Fugitt senior had brother's one of which was Jerimaha (i'm misspelling the first name) Fugitt who lived to be 90 something years old and lived with his grand nephew (my GG-Grandfater) until the 1850's in DC. He was born and raised in Virginia.
I'm sorry to say that I couldn't locate a Robert Eugene Fugitt in my records. You should also check that the spellng isn't Fugett as that problem was pretty common back then.
Good luck, C.T. Fugitt

Dear Chris:
I am related to Robert Eugene Fugitt who was often called Gene. I have done quite a bit of research on the Fugitts and I have run into Eugene Fugitt quite often. He owned a restaurant as did my gr.gr. grandfather Robert Eugene Fugitt. Your Eugene was ten years younger than my Robert Eugene, so perhaps your relative was named after mine. I have a picture of the restaurant Eugene Fugitt owned. I think it was on 4 1/2 Street, but I would have to find my notes.
Would like to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Susan Melson

Dear Carroll:
My great-great grandfather was Robert Eugene Fugitt and he was born in DC in 1839. He had a sister named Frances Fugitt Garner Slough born 1827. I find Robert living with his sister in 1850 in Allegheny Co., VA. Frances's husband was James Garner who was a sailor. She was eventually divorced or widowed and later married a man named George Slough of DC.
Robert Fugitt married Mary Elizabeth Thecker who's father owned a tavern in Georgetown. Eventually Robert and his wife would own the Post Office Restaurant in Georgetown until his death about 1884.
I've never been able to find Robert and Frances's parents. Have you ever heard about them? I have tried unsuccessfully to find anyone who has ever heard of them.
If you have any information I would appreciate it.
I have info. on the Dade's and Townsend Fugate. I have addresses, etc.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Susan Melson
Dear Lem:
It was wonderful hearing from you. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply. As I mentioned in my post to Jeffry Malone, my old computer died and I lost all my e-mails. I have never learned how to find anything on this dang computer, but I'm thrilled that I found your e-mail just playing around on my computer today.
How wonderful to be living in Japan. My father used to go to Japan two or three times a year when he was a chemical engineer with the food industry (Citrus). He loved the Japanese people and they were very good to him.
Are you still with the same company? Do you still like living in Japan?
It has been so many years since we've corresponded!
I hope you have been more successful in finding a possible link between your grandfather Lem and my Great-grandfather Robert. I know I found many, many Lem Fugitts when I was in DC. They were very prominent. Most were in the Law, as I'm sure you well know. I have the addresses of their homes and businesses. I have a very strong feeling that we are first degree relatives but I can't be sure. Are you a red head? It seems like a lot of the Fugitts were. I don't know what my Fugitts looked like. I have no pictures. Some day I hope to find who my Great-great-grandfather was.
Please write me and let me know how you are. My new e-mail is rust567@aol.com.
Take care. I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Jeff:
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I was just able to find your e-mail. My old computer died and I lost all of my information.
I was in DC in 2004 and I went to the National Archives and copied several hundred addresses from City Directories starting in DC about 1837. I also looked up all the McPhersons or Fearsons (as they later became) and they generally lived close to the Fugitts. I am still trying to map our where any possible relatives may have lived in the hopes of finding Robert Fugitt's parentage or first degree relatives.
I would be happy to try to help you find some of your McPhersons and where they lived, etc. I know they were from Charles County, Maryland originally. I also have a list of the trades they were in. I believe it was the grocery business, but I have to double check.
Write and let me know if I could possibly work with you on our possible family connection.
By the way, that was my Robert Fugitt who was a wagonmaster during the Civil War. He was only in the service for three months. My great-great grandmother did recieve a pension for Robert's service. I have all the paper work from the Archives. Unfortunately, Robert Fugitt's parents are never mentioned in any information I've ever found about him.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Susan Melson

Have some info on Chism, but more on his sister's (Thurza, sometimes spelled Thirsa or Theresa Durbin) family (she's my ggg grandmother). This family had a very colorful history in their pioneering days in California.
