I heard of some Fulbright family living in Batesville. From what i gathered. Someone gave birth to a son in the back of my great grandfathers car. I think they named the child Jessie. From what I gather Jessie Fulbright or Jessie Rowlett. Does any of that sound familiar to anyone?

Welcome to the genealogy world, Bonnie. The majority of the photos are of the Mims and Fisher families. If they are not relatives then this Fulbright is probably not part of your family and you won't want to include him. I purchased the album with the photos inside.

George Mimms, George Mimms Jr., Eugene Mimms, Lucy Mimms Fisher, W.V. Walker, Julia & Ida Mimms, R.D. Miller, Lizzie Martin, Lila Kerr, J.L (Leslie) Shelton (union army), John Fulbright, Wm Hisey, Wm Caston. The photos were taken in Corsicana TX, Vicksburg MS, Spokane WA, Louisville KY, St. Louis MO, & Hardinsburg KY.

Mary Fullbright-W F Humphries Marriage - 1911

Although these individuals are not in my line, I ran across this article while researching my Fulbright line and thought someone may have use for it (now or in the future) - this seemed the best way to preserve it.

Atlanta Georgian and News, Sep. 8, 1911 (page 6)

Fullbright-Humphries

On Thursday evening at 8 o'clock at the residence of Rev. A. L. Flurry, 59 Neal St., Miss Mary Fullbright and Mr. W. F. Humphries were united in marriage. The marriage was very quiet, only a few intimate friends being present.
Mr. and Mrs. Humphries will be at home to their friends at 18 Degress Ave.

Happy Hunting!
N.
The Mystery of Henry Fulbright of NC and GA

Dear Cousins,

I have a bad habit of trying to solve mysteries - it's a frustrating task for certain when it comes to genealogy. The problem is that my second bad habit is that I do not give up even when something seems impossible! One of those impossible tasks seems to untangle the mystery of Henry Fulbright and his descendants (of which I may be). Let me lay out mystery at hand...

Henry Fulbright was the son of Jacob and Barbara Weiser/Weisel Fulbright (Jacob being the son of Johann and Christenah Schuck Volbrecht/Fulbright). The dates repeatedly given for his birth are 1774 and 1785 (North Carolina). In addition, it has been stated by countless genealogist and family researchers that Henry married Susannah Mingers (Haywood County, NC records show that marriage occurred on Dec 10 1814). Her DOB is typically shown as 1778.

The first problem is apparent - why would they have been marrying at this late age, at ages of 36 and 40? This does not make much sense in my view. Thus, we have to question whether the Henry marrying Susannah in 1814 is even the same Henry who is the son of Jacob and Barbara Fulbright. Or, are the dates of their birth badly in error? Or, did they first marry others (this seems unlikely in my view, but at least possible)?

The list of their supposed children varies, but almost all family trees online show these offspring:

* Joseph Fulbright - said to have been born abt. 1800 in NC
* Eli Fulbright - presumably he would have been born after 1810/1811
* Mahaly Fulbright - presumably she would have been born before (my guess is that it was between 1809-1815, but that is part of another story)
* John Leonard or Leonard John Fulbright - born abt. 1820

As you can see, is that at least one of these children (Joseph) would have been born 14 years before his parents married! As to the others listed, the presumption that Eli, Leonard, and Eli are offspring of Henry and Susannah comes from a brief notation in court records in Franklin Co in Jan 1832 giving guardianship of these three individuals to Daniel Fulbright (who was by then, living in Carroll County, having previously resided for a short time in Franklin County and the brother of our mysterious Henry). Whether this is fact or not is difficult to determine at this point. Given the ages at the time of guardianship by Daniel, we would guess that these individuals were born about 1810/11 or after. But, we also must assume that if they were born much after that, and were very young, that after guardianship they would have been residing with Daniel and there is no evidence that is the case. There is a Leonard residing with Daniel in Carroll Co. and whether he is or is not Daniels son is not an important issue for now in this mystery. It is worth noting that there is at least one "Leonard John" who remains in the Franklin area (different than the one residing with Daniel in Carroll County that is).

Regardless of where this Leonard John is residing, neither Mahaly nor Eli show up anywhere near Daniel. And per early census data, Daniel and his wife had a number of children of their own. It remains possible that these three are Daniel's children and the guardianship related to his wife's death (she also may have died by 1831, since she is shown in the 1830 census, the family isn’t found in the 1840 census, and she is missing in the 1850 census). Daniel also ceases having children, another reason to believe she died sooner rather than later in that lapsed period of time.

Not much is known about this Eli nor can I locate much on him (although there is an Eli T. Fulbright in the 1840 Haywood Co, NC Census who would have been born between 1800-1810). My assumption at this point is either that he died or that he went by another name other than Eli typically and so is enumerated in another way in the census and other documents. I believe that Mahaly remained in Franklin Co, GA and had a number of offspring (but that is another very long story!).

One of the biggest questions at this point involves the death of Henry (and wife). It has been assumed by some that he died ca 1831 (I am presuming that this date of death is based on the belief that Eli, Mahaly, and Leonard are his children and that his death led to the guardianship to Daniel in 1832). If there is another document pertaining to the death of Henry, I have not found it and it has not been shared with me by anyone after requests. Thus, I assume then that no such document exists.

There is a Henry Fulbright (and I phrase it this way since I am not certain this is Henry, s/o Jacob and Barbara) who shows up in the Franklin/Habersham Counties area about the same time as the other Fulbright's who went south to this part of Georgia (including Henry's brother, Daniel) - ca 1830. In 1820 he appears to be in Haywood County, in 1830 he seems to have moved to Habersham County, GA (as with other Fulbright's).

-- In 1820 (Haywood Co, NC) he is shown as being born bet 1775-1794 and has 5 children under the age of 16.

-- In 1830 (Habersham Co, GA) he is shown as being born between 1780-1790 and as having approx. 6 children (one already an adult).

-- In 1840 (Habersham Co, GA) he is shown as being born between 1771-1780 and having 4 presumed children still in his home (potential ages 10-30). There is also a very elderly female there with them (presumed not to be Henry's mother since she was deceased by this time).

-- In 1850, the first "named" census, there is a Henry and Susannah Fulbright both born in NC residing in Franklin County (this likely after the point of county changes, Habersham being next door to Franklin Co). Here, Henry is shown as being b. abt 1785 (and Susannah is shown as a couple of years older). In the home are the following presumed offspring of the couple: Mary, George, and Silas (there is a Susan, but appears to possibly be the wife of Silas?).

-- In 1860, this couple (Henry and Susannah) are both shown as being born abt 1790 (enumerated as both being 70) and there are no other family members in the home.

What is clear here is that the Henry above is married to a Susannah - that this Henry did not die ca 1831 but died after 1860. As can be seen in the 1850 census, their children include Mary, George and Silas. It is clear that the Henry and Susannah above were very likely born sometime between 1780-1790 (likely more toward the latter part of that interval given the most frequent date of birth given). A DOB of 1785-1790 would make MUCH more sense regarding their 1814 date of marriage (and be well within the typical age of marriage, rather than the 36 and 40 ages otherwise suggested).

So, who is the Henry who married Susannah Mingers? If Henry who is in Habersham County married to a Susannah is a different man than Henry the son of Jacob and Barbara, then who is in Haberham? The questions are numerous. The data that has been set forth thus far does not fit from my analysis. There is a lot of inaccurate data and a lot of missing data. Perhaps the Henry in Habersham, who married Susannah, is the son of Henry son of Jacob/Barbara? Or perhaps the date of birth for Henry son of Jacob/Barbara is 1785-1790 vs. ca 1774-1784? Is there evidence of the death of Henry of which I am not aware (and if so, what/where is it?).

Unfortunately, questions just lead to more questions. Still, there must be better answers than we have so far. After all, arguably our most famous Fulbright (Sen. William Fulbright) appears to descend from this portion of the Fulbright family tree. I welcome any and all comments from those with interest in this line that includes Jacob Fulbright m. Barbara Elizabeth Weiser/Weisel, whose children include Daniel (abt 1785, m. a Nancy Unknown) and Henry (possibly Henry Joseph) Fulbright. I believe this line also includes the lines stemming from many of Fulbright’s who ended up in Franklin County (currently Stephen’s County) Georgia – such as William S. Fulbright, Parthenia Fulbright Dobbs, Daniel F. Fulbright, and Willis Leonard (W. L.) Fulbright.

(Please forgive any mistakes I may have made in typing numbers or counting children or specifying facts. As we say in my profession this was "dictated but not proofed"). Thanks for reading - this is my father's line and it is dear to me!

N. McBee
My-genealogy [at] bellsouth.net
Miles Fulbright - Galvanized Yankee

A question for someone that might be associated with these men. It is more out of curiosity than anything.

Lecil (Lesil) Devine -31st AL. CSA
James D. Rowland - MS CSA
Miles Fulbright - NC CSA

I am the great grandson of Lecil DeVine.

All three of these men were CSA prisoners that were held at Rock Island Barracks. All three later (Oct. 1864) swore an oath and joined the Galvanized Yankees - 3rd US Volunteers -for Frontier Service. All served in some capacity around Ft. Kearney, NE areas guarding stagecoach lines. All three mustered out around November 1865.

Interestingly, all three of these men "fell ill" during their service with the 3rd US Volunteers. Through pension documents and affadavits filed by Lecil Devine, I know the unit encountered a heavy blizzard in April 1865 on the plains. Many suffered exposure and there was "not even firewood with which to build a fire." This could explain the illness of the three (compounded by of years of CSA service/reduced rations at Rock Island in summer of 1864).

At the time of "mustering out" in Nov. 1865, all three of these men had a "stoppage of $2.90" from their pay for "damages to property of John Mattis and others".

I'm not sure if Mattis (could be Mathis) was a fellow Galvanized Yankee, a Union officer in command or a civilian in the Nebraska territory.

If nothing more than a "good family story", I'd like to find out what happened to cause the damage and require the pay stoppage.

Brian DeVine

I'm looking for the parents of Rebecca Fulbright. I know she was born in Haywood County, North Carolina in 1898. She married C. Standsberry (Stansberry) Jenkins. Their children are James Ray, Charlotte Elvira, Theodore, and Paul.

I was able to find Rebecca's death certificate stating she died February 1, 1922 of pneumonia. I can't seem to find anything else about her.

I've heard rumors that Rebecca's parents disowned her after she married Standsberry, because she was native american and he was a white man. I've heard that he was the sheriff in Bryson City and on the reservation. All I have to go is rumors from my aunts and grandmother.

Any information would help.
New URL for the Fulbright – Fullbright Surname DNA Project

Dear Fulbright and Fullbright Descendents,

There's a new URL below for the Fulbright-Fullbright Surname Project for our family, a project that I hope you will participate in. Although this genealogy search is an amazing one, it’s also terribly frustrating at times and there are some links that just seem impossible without the science of DNA to help.

Hopefully, we can pull together many of the males in the family who are still with us to get answers about those who are not! Just like me, the females in the family can help by encouraging their male Fulbright / Fullbright relatives to participate (my brother already has his test kit in and the results are almost ready). With the 37 marker test, we can tease apart the different Fulbright lines and I know that many of us would be interested in the answer to those questions.

The URL for the Fulbright – Fullbright Surname DNA Project is:
http://bellsouthpwp2.net/t/h/themcbees1/Fulbright-Fullbright...

(* Please note this not for profit – I have volunteered to do this as an amateur genealogist trying to find answers about my own, and my father’s, Fulbright family)

THANKS!
N.
Re: Seeking information on William Fulbright of North Georgia

hello,

I am a descendant of Daniel Fulbright and Sarah Scoggins from Franklin Co., Ga. My Daniel has also been an enigma, as I can't find where he was born or who his parents were. He was born 3/15/1842 and died 9/20/1910. I have wondered if he was the Daniel in the census you spoke of with the Yanceys. That would have been about the right age. There was another Daniel Fulbright in Franklin Co., but he was born later. In a later census in Franklin Co., I find Daniel with his wife Sarah, and a Matilda Guess- who we think might be his mother. I am trying to contact some distant Fulbright relatives who have moved to Texas and may be able to shed some light. If anything turns up, I'll advise.
Cheryl

Please visit it to learn more.

The project is brand new and I hope that the males in the various Fulbright / Fullbright lines will participate and help us all find accurate family tree connections now that science is available to help in a way not imagined by those genealogists who came before us! I also hope that the women in this wonderful family will participate by encouraging the men in their Fulbright / Fullbright line to become a part of the project (with everyone following the results).

It’s fast, it’s easy, it’s private, and it’s heavily discounted for those who participate in a Surname Project. And, until Sept. 30th (perhaps longer), there is an ADDITIONAL 50% discount for members of Ancestry.com. I've already ordered a kit for my brother (he and his sons are the last of “my” Fulbright line). Please join us and help grow a more accurate family tree!

N. F. McBee
Hi,

I have a Jane Fulbright from GA in my tree, but she was probably born abt. 1831. I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but truthfully little has apparently been done on the Georgia Fulbright's (in fact, trying to ask anyone about it tends to get you ignored, sadly). I'm not sure if there was some blow up 100 years ago and we're somehow the black sheep, but there are lots of Georgia Fulbright descendents who have all had the same experience. There's tons on the Missouri and the more northern Fulbrights though.

Because of the virtual absence of that research, I've been doing all I can to work on all the Georgia Fulbrights (including my specific line). I've tracked down quite a bit of documentation at this point and will be glad to share it if you'd like. I'm not sure about other Janes, but I will let you know if I find another from our Georgia Fulbrights!

Good luck!

Seeking information on William Fulbright of North Georgia

Fulbright “Cousins” –

I’m at a brick wall – if you know anything about this Fulbright line, I’d appreciate any information you could provide.I’ve tried emailed a few individuals, but sadly never got any reply so hopefully a post will bring some new information.

Searching for: WILLIAM FULBRIGHT
Born abt. July 1852 in Georgia and died aft. 1930 (likely in Franklin Co, GA). The census really added a lot of initials as his middle name, including E., S. and C; but, I believe a man named William Howard Fulbright, Jr. is his son, so….).

Other information that I’ve found:

His wife is listed in the census in various ways, but usually as some version of MARTHA. However, I believe she was actually MARTINA HAYES who was born abt. July 1856 (I believe in Hart Co, GA) and likely died before 1920 (as William is widowed in that census). She was the dau of Harmon H. Hayes b. Mar 1817 in Anderson, SC and d. Apr 7 1980 in Franklin Co, GA (Coroner of Franklin Co for many years) and a Caroline Teat. The dates in her father’s obit match the census data, as does her husband’s name. I can find little information about Martina (Martha) or her father however other than the information in the obit from 1890. William and Martina/Martha apparently married about 1873.

I believe Martina/Martha and William’s children were as follows (dates close/approx):

1. Fulbright, Mary (b. 1878 in Georgia).

2. Fulbright, Holman Freeman (my grandfather; b. Mar 9 1881 in Franklin Co. GA, d. Jan 19 1935 in Stephens Co, GA).

3. Fulbright, William Howard Jr. (b. 29 Jan 1884 in GA, d. approx. 2006 North Carolina)
Fulbright, Effie Bulah (b. Mar 1894 in Franklin Co, GA).

4. Fulbright, Sintha Jane (referred to as S. Jane and Jane in some material) – b. May 1874 in Georgia. Married John A. Collier (1 census shows Callier) abt. 1909.

5. Fulbright, Sam Jones (b. 17 Sep 1901 in Franklin Co, GA, d. 25 Oct 1977 in Lowell, Gaston, North Carolina).

Note. I have information regarding the descendents of Holman Freeman Fulbright (my paternal grandfather, who with Mary Elizabeth Davis had Holman Maxom [Mannon] Fulbright, who married Norma Cowart and had me) and also William Howard Fulbright (since I met him several times during my life).

William’s parentage is a fuzzy issue. The census shows that his mother was Mahala/Mahaly/Meahala who was born sometime between 1810-1815 in North Carolina. The census shows an odd tale – William was apparently living with a family by the name of Yancy/Yancey in Banks Co, GA, which included Alfred/Alford Yancy and various children and perhaps grandchildren when he was 7 years old (1860 census). Also residing with the Yancy’s were 3 of his siblings (Nancy M. who was 5, Willis L. who was 16, and Daniel who was 18). Yet, in the 1870 Census Mahala (mother) shows up and is living with William and Bettie (age 8). Then, Mahala is again living with William (and this time after he’s married Martina/Martha) in the 1880 Census. Mahala is shown as being widowed in 1880 census, but could have been much prior to that. I have no other information on Mahala other than this census data. No father is ever noted, shown, other than the report by his son that he was born in Georgia.

I know that he and Sen. J. William Fulbright met once and compared notes, but I know nothing of the result of that. With my father and his siblings deceased, no one appears to know much of the more distant history.

I have searched many places and while there seems to be a great deal of information and research on some branches of the Fulbright’s, there is virtually nothing on this Georgia branch. I would like to complete this tree to honor my father, now deceased, and to provide a history for my brother’s children. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

N.
