Fulham/Fullam families

I have set -up a free family web-site, with Tom Fullam of New York. It is for all Fulham /Fullam families to join, and read of our ancient Norman history. We lived at Swords, Dublin for 700 years from 1294 A;D; -to the 1800s. Our family site now has 130 pages of history both in Ireland and England. Our original surname being le Blound /Blund de Fulham, this was 800 years ago. We have family members from USA, Australia, Canada, etc;. We have, united cousins from the same farms and families of the 100's of years gone by, this in the different countries today. I have recently posted the families, of the past times in Ireland in the Counties. Dublin ,being the ancient family home obviously containing th emost families. e;g,
a lot of babies being baptised, in St; Machins church in the 1600s, of Dublin town.

We are open to all famliy members to join and read and to add any history of our forefathers in Ireland. We share all our information with the long -lost cousins. If you wish to join us contact Tom Fullam, his e-mail address his,
thetribe@catskill.net
please help us and read your own history of our ancient family. We were Vikings from Norway, and then we became Normans in France.
John Fulham, Liverpool,
E-mail
jpfulham@yahoo.co.uk

I have a question

Hi Colin, I am a close friend and distant cousin to John Fulham of Liverpool. I need advice from someone who is in Ireland. I am trying to find my G G Grandfather birth County in Ireland. he was born according to records I have obtained in 1826 1827 or as another record reflects 1830 ! I think my first info is more accurate. for that inof on many census in New York State in 1850 1870 and some of his military records reflect as 1826 1827 and all records agree he was born in Ireland. his name is Robert Fullam or Fullum or in Ireland may even be Fulham. He was married to Julia Russel in New york in 1850 and he died in 1873 in New York. I have searched and searched Ship manifests and no Robert ! I think he was born in Ireland but traveled with parents to North America and that is why I cannot find any record of his travels ! His military records do not show his county nor parents names nor does his marriage certificate show his parents names. Colin any advice ???

Thomas,

That's a wealth of research you've carried out, well done!

All I can do know is carry out my research from Robert's departure from Ireland to Liverpool and back into his history, he may have been a Dublin man and therefore, may be a potential brother/cousin etc of my gggrandfather, undoubtedly we are related in some way but how close in the time line is the question.

I'll take all this information and see what we can find in Dublin.

Keep in touch,

Colin

Hi Colin, I have more info and maybe that will help ! I just found the other day the ship he was on. A Robert Fullen is listed on the Victoria which sailed from Liverpool England in 1846 and arrived in may of 1846 in New York. Now the age of the fellow is coorect and time frame is pretty much coorect. Robert Fullem Fullam shows up for the first time in New York records in 1850 when he married Julia Russel in New York at St Mary's on Grand and Ridge Streets in lower Manhattan. I think Fullen was a misspelling and it was actually Fullam During Roberts military records in the Union Army in New York his name was misspelled Fullem Fullum and of course it was Fullam. Robert may have been illiterate I know his wife Julia was illiterate. The misspellings surely indicate it was and the record keepers or clerks if you will simply spell it as they hear him say it. Also wasn't it a British trait no to allow the Irish to sign or even write their own names in them days ? I read that someplace ! At any rate I believe that this Robert Fullen is indeed my G g grandfather. His record on board says he was from Ireland and by the way he came alone ! he was the only one on board with that name !

Now as far as the Victoria goes she was operated by the Black X lines her first voyage was 1843 and she was sold to a melbourne concern in 1866 ! He apparently was Catholic in faith for St mary's was a Catholic Church and he and Julia attended there ! Robert was also in the famous fighting Irish 69th infantry in 1865. Julia was New york Born. Robert Died in 1873 from Pnuemonia and was interred in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside Queens new york.
Colin thats about all i know exept of course his kids one of which was my G Grandfather Michael . Thats about all I have ! I hope it leads someplace in Ireland.

Tom Fullam thetribe@catskill.net

Thomas,

I have heard alot about you from John Fulham, he's a very knowledable man and all Fulhams (Fullams etc) are greatly indebted to him for his research.
I was talking to John not long ago about making a trip back to Dublin (I now live in Edinburgh with my wife and son) to visit the national archives with my Dad and possibly John himself. It probably won't happen until April/May time but I'll certainly take your details with me and see what we can find out for you. Unfortunately the 1922 (date?) Dubln Civil War fires hasn't helped the Irish ancestry research field.
To date I can only trace our family back to my Great Great Grandfather, John Fulham, who would have been born in Dublin circa 1870?, so one can assum that his family were over the generations all from Dublin, possibly Swords. This again is part of our quest in the national archives.

If there is any more information you can give me about your known relations that might help.

Keep in touch,

Yours,

Colin Fulham, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Fulham family England

I have details of two marriage licences for London:

Fulham, Richard, Gent, of Hope under Dinmore, bachelor,28, and Cicely Saunders of City of Westminster, widow, 34 at St Martin in the Filds, or St Paul, Covent Garden. 15 March 1640-1.

Fulham, Thomas, and Alice Kynge, spinster of St John, Wallbrook, to marry there. 17 April 1574.

I think both of these are connected to Dr Edward Fulham's family as his grandfather was from Hope under Dinmore, and the family also had property in Wallbrook and Bishopgate, London.

Regards,

Ann Sadler

I'm curious, I've had conflicting reports about the origins of the Fulham name, some say it was an English name given to Irish 'peasant farmer' as they were called and others say it was an English name obviously originating in England. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Thanks,

Colin Fulham
