Is there any chance that the Fullen name may also have been converted to Fuller? Great, Great Grandfather had Fullen and ggfather used that and Fuller. Not sure if this was due to poor handwriting or if two different origins.

Hello. I am from Ohio and I have roots in counties Antrim and Down. My family connection is Faloon/Falloon. I believe there are several spelling variations of this family, and probably a lot are interrelated. Of course there is the Irish Gaelic origin of the more common Fallon found mostly further south in Ireland. Some Fullans might be of this origin. I have found that there was a root variant of FULLOON which is an Anglo-Norman occupational name from the old french le fulun, a 'Fuller' of cloth. Variations are Fullen, Fallan, Fullan, Fulloon, Falloon/Faloon, Falloone/Fal(l)oona, Falooney, etc. Many names in Northern Ireland trace back to the border region of Scotland/England & the Scottish Lowlands due to the Plantation of Ulster in the early 1600s. In 1891 there were several Fullans found in Northumberland (and I would be willing to bet also across the border in Scotland a few as well). My Faloons were Presbyterian- pointing to this origin. Of course there was certain intermingling to a degree so that would account for those who were/are Catholic. Fullan/Falloon families in Ulster seem to be settled in a swathe from Belfast/Lisburn in Antrim/Down over to Portadown in Co. Armagh and over to the Tyrone area around Dungannon. There were a few others it seems in Donegal and Londonderry but the main area seems to be the aforementioned. This is just a longstanding hunch I've had about my Faloon ancestry and have found shreds of truth to back up my hypothesis as mentioned. When you're dealing with seventeenth century Ulster you're not going to find much in the way of records past the hearth money rolls. Add to this that Fullan/Falloon is one of the rarer surnames of Ulster. Any feedback is welcomed.

Trying to find more information on the first husband of my great-great grandmother, Lucinda Jane Fry (10 Nov 1848 - 5 Apr 1886). All the information that I have is that Samuel Fullen and Lucinda married in Tennessee in 1867 and the names of their children via the 1880 census. I cannot find them in the 1870 census or find their marriage record in either Tennessee or Indiana (which is where she is by 1880). Can someone please help?

I am not certain but I may be able to provide more information if you have not received it already. My family is from SW Virginia near Saltville, Tumbling Creek, and Meadowview. There are two sets of Fullen families that are related from that area. Some names that may be familiar to you are Whitley Fullen, Sarah Fullen, Maggie Fullen. We are also related to Hiltons, and Bordwines I believe. I learned all of this from my late father Thomas H. Fullen Sr.

Yes, I have your information and it is limited, as is mine, However the only James Fullen & spouse named Catherine that I have found are in Pa..
According to the list of family names given to James C. & Catherine E Fullen there were two children born with the Willoughby name.
The thing that is bothering me is that I'm stuck on Catherine E Parker and her marriage to J.M. Fullen. This could be John, James, Jorden, etc., I have searched all locations listed in the 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930 census'that indicate the birth-places of Willoughby Simon. And have found no connection other than Louisiana, USA.
Willoughby states in Database online. Year: 1900; Census Place: Justice Precinct 7, Polk, Texas; Roll: T623_1664; Page: 28B; Enumeration District: 63.that he was born in Louisiana.

Iris,
The James C. Fullen and Catherine Parker family don't have any direct connection to any Fullen's in PA around 1880 that I know of. There is a James Fullen and Catherine Parker family that resided in and around East Texas and northwest Louisiana. You can see them in my online tree here:

http://www.strongfamilytree.org/register.php?personID=I937&a...=

The records on them are sparse. They were said to have had a son named Willoughby Fullen who died young. If there son DID NOT actually die young, then this Willoughby Simon Fullen, husband of Lizzie Pogue and later Lula Davis, MIGHT be him.

http://www.strongfamilytree.org/getperson.php?personID=I2121...

I am very interested in both families because they tie into my direct Fullen line from Sabine County, Texas.

Hello there

My great grandfather was James Fullan, his daughter Rebecca was my grandmother.
I know very little about them except that they were from Northern Ireland and that they were Catholic. I think James may have lived in Scotland briefly before coming to Liverpool. He married a scottish girl called Margaret Fairley Seggie.
Most of my enquiries have been to vague for me to be sure about where he was from but his wedding cert does confirm that his father was also James Fullan. That is as far I can go for now. I will have another look and get back to you. It is quite an unusual name, so with some more investigations I may prove fruitful.
Keep in touch
best wishes
Sheila (my hubby is Robert)

I have done much research on FULLAN, but none on Fullen. My earliest known FULLAN ancestor was Peter Fullan, B. ca 1780 in County TYRONE, N I, D. ca 1840 in Carleton County (Nepean Tsp), Ontario, Canada. He served in the British Army during the war of 1812 and recieved two separate land grants (100 arpents each,1830 & 1832) for his service to the Crown "as a discharged seargant of the 27th Regiment of Foot". The earliest FULLAN reference I found was a Patrick fullan in Dublin in 1620. I believe there is a relationship between FULLAN and FULLEN (and Phalen too)---- illiteracy? mis-hearing? carelessness? national alliegiance? etc. Smiles, John Fullan, P O Box 54, CLINTON, IOWA 52732 USA

Hello, John. I am tracing the family of Bernard (Barney) Fullen of Jefferson Co., Ohio. He was born in England in 1852, became a US citizen in 1865. His parents were born in Ireland. Barney died in Jefferson Co., Ohio. I have learned that there were several Barney Fullens in Ohio, with another born in 1836 in Ireland, and married to Catherine, born in England, whose parents where from Ireland.
I have also been told that I would never be able to figure out where in Ireland Barney came from. Are there Fullans or Fullens throughout Ireland?
Do you see any connection between my FULLENs and your FULLANS in Co Tyrone? Thanks for any help you can offer. Mary

Hello
My great grandfather was James Fullan born in Ireland in 1869.
I believe he may be the son of Thomas Fullan and Catherine Eccles from Dungannon but I am not convinced. My great grandfather came to Liverpool and married Margaret Fairley Seggie from Scotland in 1898 and amongst their children was my grandmother Rebecca.He died in 1910 and was a stonemason by trade.
I know there was more than one James Fullan in Tyrone at this period and wondered if I were on the right track.
Best wishes
Sheila

Melinda,
"not wishing to get in to argument of a dangerous political nature but Ulster as we know it today North EastIreland of 6 counties is actually an abridged concept post 1922 political version of the ancient kingdom of Ulster of 9 counties. The other 3 counties are to be found in the South.

Fullen maybe be a version of the ancient Hibernian (Irish Celts) of Fulloon. The Ulster Scots as you mention them are originally from what we know as Ireland, their ancestors invaded the land of the Picts and killed the adult males and intermarried with their women folk hence the country is now known as Scotland today. Yes you are right there are many in the Appalachians of the descent of the Irish and Ulster Scots,I could spend a lifetime on the history of the people of the British Isles.

However all Fulham lineages can be traced to the original family in the 1200's in the City of London there was only i family and the earliest recorded were 2 male children in baptisms of the 1220s with the surname le Blund de Folehame. Our people were Normans (not Frenchmen)who's ancestors were in fact Vikings 1200 years ago from Norway. The Fulham genealogy written in 1900's by Brigadier General Volney Sewall Fulham of Vermont, Union Army 1860-65 describes the DNA related gifts which are found in all of the family of all variations of Fulham surname in all countries of the former British Empire still found today. We still possess the same names as our people of long ago
males:Thomas John William Robert Richard Edward
females: Catherine Eleanor(Helen) Margaret Mary Anne Elizabeth. Fulham etc is even rarer and closer DNA Factors etc internationally. I traced a Canadian back to the original family in the City of London in the 1300's he is the most direct relative on the distaff side of the main family. Yet Other Canadian Fullum people can be traced back to the 1600's main family in the City of London.

Do Contact Ben and you may find the Fulham family history page on google and yahoo genealogy pages listed as fullam fullem fulham, it contains 600+pages of 800 years of free history to read of the Fulham family.
John Liverpool

John,
Thanks for your quick response and additional information.

I am not sure who the parents of my great-grandfather, John Willoughby Fullen. He was born in August 1845 in the Republic of Texas. He was living with his young widowed mother, Rebecca Fullen, born about 1826 in Pennsylvania, and two brothers. No father was in the home, and presumably he had already died. Rebecca died prior to the 1860 census, leaving the boys orphaned. The boys later reported that their parents were born in Alabama, North Carolina and Tennessee.

It is interesting you mentioned the family seems to have originated in Ulster. Forgive my ignorance, but Ulster UK is a different place from Ulster North Ireland? I am always guessed the Fullens might be Scots-Irish, settled in Pennsylvania with many other Scots-Irish from Ulster, and them followed the great wagon road to Virginia, the Carolinas, and eventually to Tennessee and further westward.So maybe my guess was right.

I didn't know of the various spellings, or the relative rarity of the name.

Thanks again for your help and insight!

Melinda McLemore Strong

Melinda,Ben Fullen is listed on the inquiry board as Bengful189 is an American descended from the first of the Virginia Fullens who was a soldier in the Colonists 1770's-80's rebellion against the Crown of England. Massachusetts and Tennessee etc lineages are all near relatives. I do not know of your Texas family but Ben is your most suitable source.

I emphasise that the surname is only found in a very small place in Ulster UK before the 1840's. Post the Irish Famine it is found in England and Scotland as the families fled the starvation. They are still found living in the same small area in Ulster today. The emigrees in the former British colonies are all from these small roots of the early 1700's and we must presume before that date.

Beware there has been much confusion in spellings and Fulham has become Fullam hence Fullem which becomes confused with Fullen ?
In Pennsylvania there are Fulham Fullum Fullam Fullem Fullom Fullen when the first records are looked at for the US Federal Census of the 1790's 1800's the spellings in Elk Lick Somerset County Pennsylvania of Fullam becomes Fullum later the same person is recorded as Fullen. These of Somerset County are the relatives of the family in Fayette Coumty Penn;...........there are Fullam families in Philadelphia and others in Bucks County Penn; all are relatives over the past 800 years but not now clear.
The surnames are subject to local accents in UK and Ireland it would have been more confusing in 1800's USA due to the influx of non English speaking Europeans.
However all are relatives your Fullens in the US Federal Census of 2000 are as follows
population of USA 281,421,900 persons

Fullen 2157 persons

Follen 277 persons

Fullan 145 persons

Fullen and Fullan are both found in the part of ulster where they have lived fro centuries.

John Fulham:
Liverpool,England

Does he have a website or book or anything like that we can read to get more information? My brick wall is a FULLEN family that can be found in Sabine County, Texas at the time of the 1850 census, widowed mother with three young boys. She reported that she and boys father were born in Pennsylvania. The father MIGHT be James C. FULLEN, who had applied for land in that area.
Would love to know more abou the FULLEN's migratory pattern,

Melinda McLemore Strong

http://strongfamilytree.org
The most authoritative member of the Fullen family in the USA is Ben Fullen. He is to be found here on this Fullen ancestral site.

He has researched the family back to the earliest roots of the family in the former Colony and the founder of the family lineage you are researching in the 1700's when they became members of the Rebellion against the Crown.

The family originate in Ulster, North East Ireland and are still found living there today in the ancestral home area.
The family surname in a very small one and the families in USA being related from its origin in Virginia via Tennessee, Massachusetts etc.

The Federal Census of USA in 2000 recorded a total of
2157 Fullen persons,
277 Follen persons,
145 Fullan persons,
the total USA population being in 2000 281,421,906 persons, this is a clear display of the relationship of the family in USA.

All Fullen families whether in Australia, New Zealand South Africa, Canada , Scotland or England are relatives of the above lineages and may be found by contacting the Ulster Genealogy sources on the internet.

John Fulham,
Liverpool,
England

Hi!
Any chance you could scan the picture and post it? Or email offline? Did she belong to any clubs, organizations, etc? Any siblings mentioned?
Is the 1928 yearbook the only one to which you have access?
Are the books in a local library or privately owned?
acfullam@mhonline.net

Have you looked for a will for anyone? Wills list people by name, relationship and location. Might help!

Since it's odds on that someone of this family died in NYC, in any of the five boroughs, surrogate court in Manhattan would be a good place to start.

My gg-grandmother was Catharine/Katharine (or someone other variation) Haaser of Brooklyn, NY who married Julius Schneider. Catharine died in 1927 & Julius died in 1935. my grandmother was Catherine Schneider, now remarried twice.

The last reference I have to Florence Fullen is the 1920 census, when she was 1 & 1/2 years old in Queens, NY. I will defintely check out that certificate (where did you find it btw? because I didn't bump into, but I don't have ancestry.com or anything like that).

it's funny, until I got the burial record, late Saturday night, I thought they're last name was Fuller, since that is what my grandmother rememebered. even stranger, Barbara (Haaser) Fullen, Richard Fullen (the elder) & Richard Fullen (junior), as well Barbara Fuller (baby Barbara - i assume the cemetery also got the name confused) are all buried together in Queens, NY, but Florence Fullen is mia.

Apparently this name DOES get misspelled a lot.

~~~ kelticsoul
Might want to check the cert listed below.
By the way, who is your grandmother? There's so much misspelling of Fullam/Fulham/Fullan/Fullem/Fullen/Fullim/Fullom/Fulla/Funham/etc. I even found a Vullam recently!
Marriage Record for Florence M FULLAM
Spouse: Harold A SITT
Date: 13 Sep 1947
B/G: Bride
Source: Book:157 Page:450
Record #: license date 1947/09/12
County and State: St Joseph Co.
NY Fullen's?
Hello all,
I'm looking for anyone who has any knowledge of Fullen's from NY. Specially Richard Fullen (b. 1882 - d. 02, 1953) who married Barbara Haaser (b. 1893 - d. 03/04, 1963) & had three children - Barbara (b. 12/1/1916 - d. 08/12/1916), Richard (b. 06/23/1915 - d. 07/26/2007) & Florence (b. 1919 - ).
Richard was & Florence is (if she is still alive) my grandmother's first cousins.  The family lost contact back in the 1930's & I just found out about them, unfortunately a little late for Richard. but Florence might still be alive, although she probably married - I haven't found a married name for her yet & any children or grandchildrenof both Florence & Richard would still be cousins & i'd love to exchanfge information.
Any & all help would be greatl appreciated.
~~~ kelticsoul
