I have no connection at all to these families but found this while doing other research. It appeared in the Jan. 28, 1858 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"VERMONT - Merritt E. Fuller of Hartwellville, while returning from a spelling school last week, fell behind his party and was found next day frozen to death. He was 16 years of age."
