I don't know where he's buried, but his father was Samuel Funderburg, b c 1787 in SC and d c 1830 in GA. His mother is listed as Polly, which means her name could have been Mary. Samuel was from Edgefield Co SC, and Polly is supposed to have been as well. Samuel's father was Anthony Walter Funderburg and went by the name of Walter. He was b on the Yadkin River in Forsythe Co NC 1749. I don't have a death date for him, nor do I know the name of his wife. He and some of his family appear in the 1830 census for Gwinnett Co GA. Anthony Walter's parents were Anthony Funderburgh, c1727 Ireland - c 1809 SC, and Rebecca (maybe McCarthy), c1729-c1785. Anthony and his brother, Henry, were on board the ship The Thistle, when it docked in Philadelphia in 1738. They are not listed as they are under age, but their father, Peter, and Peter's brother Walter (Valentin) Funderburg are listed. It is believed that Anthony is bured either in a family cemetery or church cemetery in Egdgefield Co SC, but it has not been found.

I believe your Stanley was actually, Stanmore W. Funderburg, b 09 Oct 1869 died 15 Nov 1931. I don't have his wife or children, but I do have his parents, and on back a few generations. His father would have been Watson Funderburg and his mother, Rebecca Vansant (she is bu in Ward). If you think this might be your line, email me.

Most of the spellings of Funderburg/Funderburgh in Ohio came from the Maryland branch of the family. A Daniel Funderburgh and his wife, Catherine Strausburg (she d 1825). They were living in Greene Co OH. He also had two brothers who moved to Ohio, Lazarus supposedly also moved to Greene Co. I'm not sure about Noah, Perry Co maybe. They were members of the German Baptist Brethren (Dunkards?). You might be able to find something that way. I don't know if she's an unmarried daughter, or one of the names you mentioned who married a Funderburgh.

If you are able to identify either her parents or her spouse, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

Toshi.........William Louis was the son of Siburn the brother to my great great grandfather William Marshall Funderburg. Siburn was married in St. Clair county, Alabama. His father was Peter Funderburg and Mary. Both are listed in the 1860 St. Clair census, and are not listed after that. Siburn moved to Etowah County Alabama after the war. He served in the 8th Alabama Cavalry and applied for a pension after the war, having fallen off his horse and injuring his back. He died in 1900. Peter is the grandson of Anthony, the son of Peter Vonderburg who came from Germany on the Thistle. A ship leaving Europe and landing in Philadelphia in 1738. There are cousins of yours living in Birmingham that are descended from Siburn. One of which, was a notable physician. Hope this helps a bit...........Joe

Von der Burg is the original Germany name that that was Americanized to Funderburg, Funderburk, funderburgh, etc. in the late 1700's and early 1800's. We have quite a bit of information for the Funderburg spelling of the surname in the Edgefield / Saluda/ Aiken area of SC. By all accounts we have the family's relegious affililations were christian prostestant with Dunkards being mention often in the early years. I am not aware of any Funderburg's that converted to the Jewish faith. Was your grandmother's family from SC?

Dave

Hi,
I hope it is not too late to put some information on this question. My great grandfather, a Funderburg, did migrate from Germany. This is all the information that my family has at the moment. As far as being Jewish, it is very possible. My Father has a Factor XI Deficiency (Hemophilia C).

"The disorder is particularly common among Ashkenazi Jews, of Eastern European origin. It is estimated that 8% of the people in this ethnic group carry the defective Factor XI gene."
Quote Taken from this site.
http://www.hemophilia.ca/en/2.3.7.php

This appears to be only passed down if both parents carry the same defective gene.

This could be just coincidence, but is very likely that this is directly related to the Ashkenazi Jews and Funderburg being of these descendants.

You asked what you needed to do to get started on your serch. I ruggest for Claude H Funderburg that you look at his birth certificate and obtain his parents names, date of birth,or dates of marriage, and state where they were born.

For Mary P Funderburg db-1903 I think you could do likewise and get state, etc where her parents, were born, date born, and her maiden name, also state, county, township, city, all are born. Or Just the state is a great help.

Good luck. My grandmother is a Funderburg, and was born in Mississippi in 1872, she married a Springer that was born in Mississippi in 1872.

You need names, state born and year born to start with of these Mary P and Claude's parents, or children of these persons.

Good Luck, Ann and my email is: awebbh@netzero.com

Catherine Funderburg/Funderburgh

I just put Catherine up on Find-A-Grave, hoping for a connection. She's buried in Woodland Cem, Xenia, Greene Co, OH, 'Died Oct 12, 1846 in her 68th year'. Her inscription is on the red granite Blessing obelisk (see) along with 7 asst'd Blessing's and Lindamood's and Fry's from Shenandoah Co, VA. Other surnames might be the Lucas' or Barthsherrer's or . . . ?

I have no other information - except that we have no idea who she was or why she's there in the Blessing Plot. The earliest Blessing burials there were in 1825 and the latest was in 1900, and there she is, in 1846.

Any other Funderburgs out there?
And if so, we might be related.

I'm a direct descendant of Alfred Funderburk, who was the first one in my family to have been born here in Illinois.
