About me and my FUNK connection: My last FUNK was my great-great Catherine Shelly FUNK. She was born on 17 Apr 1803, in Berks Co., Pennsylvania and died 20 Mar 1862 in Spinnerstown, Pennsylvania. I’ve only recently begun working with this surname, so in some respects I feel like a “newbie.” To date with the help of the Internet and the work of others, I’ve hopefully identified three of her great-grandfathers and two of her great-grandmothers: Henrich FUNCK and Anna MEYER, Jacob SHOWALTER and Mariah SAUNDERS, and Abraham SHELLY and Elizabeth -----. I hope to begin looking at primary and secondary records for these lines this year.
My genealogical studies began officially in late January 1976 and much of that time was pursuing my southern U.S. lines, with the early years spent with an occasional look at U.S. Census schedules for southeast Pennsylvania. By late I grew tired of beating my head against the various “brickwall” ancestors and decided to pursue my Mennonite heritage, knowing that the National Genealogical Society’s 1997 annual conference would be held in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania that coming May. My father passed away in March of that year, but I honored him in May by attending the conference. I spent two fruitful days researching at the nearby Lancanster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) and I was able to push several of my known lines back to Europe and discovered several new lines in the process. Since then I’ve found several sites on the Internet that contain databases with my families listed and (believe it or not!) sourced. And even discovered that some their primary sources have been setting in my own home un-read for the past 5 years -- what a blessing the various authors have been with their works published in the LMHS’ quarterly publication, “Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage.” My deepest regret is that my father wasn’t still alive when I made these most recent discoveries.
I hope to share my FUNK research using both GenConnect and my own Web site -
