This place of birth is recorded on his birth certificate. He always told us that he lived in Bagwell, Texas.
Daddy was born a beautiful black hair ,blue eyed boy in a not so beautiful world. His young eighteen year old mother, Marietta Furgerson, was not married to his thirty-four year old father, Everett Eli Ferguson.
Everett was married to Marietta's sister Marguerite, at twenty-one already the mother of Odis, Lila Ruth and pregnant with Maudine. (Mary Louise was born later) What commotion and heartache this caused the family can only be imagined, however it was the innocent baby boy called "Sonny" who would suffer for the rest of his life.
Marietta died at the age of twenty. In the words of Aunt Jane "She just wasted away." Daddy was three and remembered her collapsing at the dinner table.
Marguerite died just three years after her sister leaving her five small children behind too.
The six "cousins" were raised by Francis Marion Furgerson and Mary Ann Malone Furgerson, their grandparents.
Everett Eli remarried and took Marguerite's children but never acknowledged Dad. He died in 1964.
The circumstances of Louis's birth, the reluctance of the family to discuss their history and the variations, misspellings and mispronunciations of the family name have made researching very difficult.
