Fyffe Australia

I'm trying to do some family history research, i'm pretty sure i'm the first in my family to try but i'm having some trouble locating any record on my mother's side.
My grandfathers name is Brian Charles Fyffe married to Wendy Anne Fyffe (nee James). Kids are Veronica, Judy, Valerie (Clare), James, Joseph
My great grandfather was Joseph Fyffe married to Clara Ellen Fyffe (nee. Johnson).
All i was told is that he was born in Ireland around approx 1913 (although i could be wrong there) and came to Australia, but can't find any records of his immigration. I'm pretty sure Joseph lived in Prosperpine, Queensland, until late 1940's early 1950's where he moved to Carrajung in Gippsland Victoria. He Died in Sale in 1993, and i'm pretty sure he's buried in Bairnsdale.
Clara, his wife, was born in Tasmania around 1918 (Again not one hundred percent positive), and died in 1994.

None of my family really like talking about there past, and so they were not much help. Really hoping someone can help me out
He is also married to Sarah Watson - they married in 1745.

Does anyone have any other information?

Where did you find the bible? I appreciate you listing all the info that you have found. I also have relatives in California and some in Oklahoma/Missouri but have never been able to contact them. Please let me know if you are a relative and who you are related to. Alexander Fyfe/Fyffe was born in 1852, Scotland and died in 1903 in Des Moines, Iowa. I am great-great-grandson to him.

Well, I realize this is a very old post. For anyone else looking, I will post what I have. In my info, I have Larkin Fyffe married several times. He was son of John Jackson Fyffe and Rhoda Rigsby. One of his wives name (I believe his second) was Teresa Ison and they married Oct 2 1896 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Teresa had been married first to Henry Haden Ferguson and after his death married Larkin, but Teresa must have died sometime between 1900 to 1907. Teresa was the daughter of Hamilton Ison and Phoebe Hill. Hamilton Fyffe of Cincinnati is mentioned in the obit of his half-brother Isaac Ferguson. I have Larkin married twice after Teresa. Anyone needing more info can get in touch with me by responding to this message.

Re: William "Billy" Fyffe and Sebra Porter

Marilyn,

Do you have any information on the descendants of John Franklin Fyffe and Martha Slusher? John was a son of your GG grandparents Billy Fyffe and Sebra Porter. I have no Fyffe (nor Porter or Cantrell) ancestry, but Martha Slusher was my GGG Aunt, so I am related to their descendants on the Slusher side.

I don't imagine this is your line, since you do not list Slusher among your surnames (and you listed several other surnames not mentioned in the post, so I take it you were using the field as a list of all your surnames related to the line), but since their grandchildren would be second cousins of yours, perhaps you may have known them.

I am trying to fill out my database for their descendants, and find the records confusing. For example, the Ky birth index lists John A. Fyffe born 9 April 1914 and Sarah Fyffe born 21 May 1914, both in Morgan Co., both with the mother's maiden name Shellie Cantrell. Two children cannot be born to the same mother 6 weeks apart!

The conflict in the birth index would ordinarily lead me to conclude that perhaps there were two Shellie Cantrells in Morgan Co. both of whom married Fyffe men, but the census records do not support that hypothesis. There is only one Shella or Shellie Fyffe in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses, the wife of James Oliver "Ollie" Fyffe, son of John F. Fyffe and Martha Slusher. (Shellie was the dau of Joseph Cantrell and Sebra Ellen Fyffe, and was thus a first cousin of her husband.)

Moreover, the Kentucky death records list a daughter Pearlie Fyffe, age 4, birthdate unknown, who died of the flu on 26 Oct 1918, father Oliver Fyffe, mother's maiden name Shella Cantrell. This would imply a date of birth in 1914.

The 1920 census lists no Sarah or John with the family of Oliver Fyffe and Shellie Cantrell, nor is there any death record for either name.

My guess is that Sarah and Pearlie are the same person, and that a year of 1919 was misindexed as 1914 on the birth record for John A., and that he is the same person as the son Arnold in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. But I would like to confirm those guesses with someone who has personal knowledge of the family.

Lucy Fyffe of Kentucky

My brick wall is Lucy Fyffe of Johnson County, Kentucky. Born Sept 4, 1914 in Johnson County, died July 9, 2002 in Johnson County Kentucky. Her father was James Fyffe (March 6, 1885-March 1982)..Not a typo, he was 97.
Lucy married Oscar Slone (1909-1982) in Kentucky and had 9 children. The children were Woodrow, Henry, Willard Martin, Selse, Birdie, Gene, Billy Joe, Peggy, Fern.

Lucy was about 1/4 or 1/2 Native American on her mothers side. We believe Cherokee but cannot be 100 percent sure. Does anyone have any information on Lucy Fyffe's mother? We have hit a brick wall with her.

Denisa

Lonna,
Sorry to be getting back to you so belatedly. Lee Fyffe was the nephew of my grandmother, Mary A. Fyffe Baird, and he and my father, of course, were first cousins. My dad always spoke fondly of Uncle Charlie Fyffe. Charles's and Mary's father was John Wilson Fyffe, who, along with his wife, Lucy Lathrop Fyffe, is buried in the White House Cemetery north of Bridgeport. The family was from Scotland, migrating to Maryland in the 1730s, but there were many generations between the original migration and Grand Uncle Charlie Fyffe in Bridgeport.

I would be interested to know how the family descends from Lee Perkins.
Ed,
I only recently saw your post regarding the Fyffes dated 2003. I checked that site regularly for a year or so, but haven't gone back to it until recently.

We do have the same DNA, although it goes back to Thomas Montgomery Fyffe, my gggrandfather. His son, John Wilson, was my ggrandfather (1820-1879), while an elder son, Edward Perry, was your direct ancester. John Wilson's elder daughter, Mary A. was my grandmother. Over the years I have collected a good bit of information on the Fyffe family, including your side of the family. What I have relevant to your family ends with Albert Edward, however. Indeed, I am unaware of any of his siblings or of his mother. I would be pleased to be brought up to date on that particular line.

I was unaware that Edward Perry was buried in the Lone Pine cemetery. I last visited that in 2005, to check on the tombstone of Russell and Cynthia Lathrop, the inlaws of John Wilson Fyffe. Is the stone of Edward still visible?

If you can figure out to contact me off line, I would be pleased to share what I have with you.

I am sorry to be be so belated in responding to your message.
Thanks for following up on the thread. I quite checking on the post some years ago, but I am glad to have my attention returned to it. We certainly do have the same DNA! Over the years, I have picked up a good bit of information on your family: John Wilson, Edgar, John Casper, Chester Gale, and John C. For the children of the latter and Barbara Terrell, I have John C., Joseph Andrew, Kerri S., and Barbara J. I don't know who your father is, although I presume it is John C., but I have no reference to you. So my information must be inadequate.

Insofar as the cemeteries are concerned, many of the Fyffe's lie in the White House Cemetery. The parents of Lucy Lathrop Fyffe, John Wilson's wife, are in the Lone Tree Cemetery, on a hill just north of the prison. I reset Cynthia Lathrop's head stone in 2005. The stone of her husband, Russell, stood nearby but under a tree. It was hard to read, and it will not be many more years until it can't be read at all.

I do have pictures of the John Wilson and Lucy Lathrop Fyffe homestead, and several of Charles Fyffe's family, which include Lucy Lathrop. If we can establish communication directly, I will be glad to send them to you via email.

I would be pleased to have more specific information such as dates and locations, and a fuller list of descendants in your line.

Stay in touch.
I sure hope you are still reading this thread.

Your Great-Grandfather, John Wilson, is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather. John's son Edgar had a son John Casper who, with Essie Belle Bowers bore my Grandfather Chester Gale Fyffe. I believe they are also buried in the White House Cemetary along with my Uncle Robert Fyffe who passed a couple of years ago. My father and one other son are still living.

Nice to meet another descendent.

Linda Fyffe Kennedy

I know this thread is quite old. I am the Grand Daughter of Chester Fyffe. I have many relatives buried in the cemetaries you mentioned. Is there any confirmation of the vandalism and if so were any markers put in place for those that were lost?

I am just now entering the information that I have on the family (and my mother's side as well) so it is a little slow going. I believe I have a little bit of info and we are likely related via a side branch of the family. I still have living relatives in the area - mostly cousins, although one son of Chet does survive in IL and my father is in Indiana.

Linda Fyffe Kennedy

Fyffe, Fyfe, Bell in Canada, New York, Iowa, Missouri

I believe my Great Great Grandfather brought the name Fyffe here from Scotland. Grace Forbes Fyfe (b.1849) and Alexander Stewart Fyffe (b.1852) Dundee Scotland were brother and sister. Both were married in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1873 to Scottish partners, who both may have traveled with them to Canada from Scotland about 1872. Grace and Alexander’s parents were Alexander Fyfe (a sailor) and Jannet Stewart (b. 1827 in Dull, Perthshire, Scotland.) I know nothing of Alexander Fyfe senior. Alexander married first in 1873 to a Miss Jessie Kinnear, born 1850 Monikie, Scotland to William Kinnear and Ann Easson. Grace Fyfe married John Bell, born in 1850 Aberdine, Scotland to Peter Bell and Helen Crichton. Alexander and Jessie had one daughter Anna in 1874 and then Jessie was killed in a horse and buggy accident in 1879. Grace and John had several children (8) from 1876 to 1892 (in Canada), John, Edward, Robert, Alexander, Edward, Catherine, Florence, and Henry(?) They moved to New York about 1900 after John Bell Sr. died. Alexander moved to Michigan about 1881 with his daughter and remarried. His new wife was English, name of Nyda Kennedy (born 1861 Michigan) daughter of Benjamin and Jennie Kennedy. They moved to Illinois for a time and had Harry Alexander Fyffe (b.1883) and Alexander Stuart Fyffe (b. 1885). They moved to Des Moines, Iowa and had more children, Grace, Grace, Nyda, Nyda, and Jessie. One Grace and one Nyda survived. Grace married Alvia Richardson, and Nyda married Walter Ludwig. Alexander Stuart Fyffe and the Richardsons moved to California. Harry and Nyda Ludwig lived in Kansas City, Missouri. Alexander Stewart Fyffe died in 1904 in Des Moines. His family all moved to Kansas City, Missouri at that time. Nyda Kennedy lived until 1942. I have just begun studying the Grace Bell family of New York. Several sons were married but I have no information about spouses at this time. Written from memory so there might be some mistakes. I have more information, dates etc. Would love to hear from any relatives Fyffe, Bell?

Thank-you very much. Some of the information I already had, but I don't have a lot of time to look up new data. I was hoping to find a relative somewhere, but that may take much more research. Again-thanks! Larry

Since I have both Fyffe and Kinnear in my family in Dundee, Scotland, I looked into your family to see if they tied into mine. Unfortunately they do not, but thought I'd pass along a few items.

1) There is one possible match for the parentage of Alexander Stewart Fyffe in Glasgow&Iverness, Scotland.
Henry Fyfe and Mary Ann Stewart had a son named Alexander, born 30 January 1851-Somewhat close to your April 1852.
His siblings were named Jessie, Margaret, Mary Ann, and Elizabeth.

2) Alexander certainly moved around alot. Probably because he was a foundryman working in the steel industry. In the 1876 Directory for Des Moines, Iowa he is listed as working as a foreman at the Eagle Iron Works, residence 120e 12th. In 1900 in Minneapolis, he is again a Foundry Foreman.

3) Alexander is buried at Woodland Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa. A gravestone transcription: Alexander Fyffe, died/buried (there's no title headings on web page) January 3, 1904. (1851-1904) Is it possible Alex died in Iowa and not Kansas?

4) Fyffe burials at Woodland Cemetery:
FYFFE, Alex, February 03, 1904, DM09
FYFFE, Jessie Stewart, March 10, 1896, DM09
FYFFE, Nyda K., April 28, 1889, DM09 (An earlier daughter?)

5) Nyda Kennedy Fyffe died in Kansas City, Missouri March 1942.

6) Grace B. Fyffe married on the 3rd September 1911 in Kansas City, Missouri. Spouse: Alvia O. Richardson,b. Sept 15, 1889, Missouri; d. September 4, 1963, Orange Co., California. Children by 1920 include Alvia & Harry. I believe that Grace died in Kansas City,July 1977 with a birthdate of August 20, 1894.

Regards,
Barbara Lewellen
Colorado

Alexander Fyffe in California, Harry Fyffe in Missouri (1882-1963)

Hello, I am a descendant of Alexander Stewart Fyffe (1852-1903?) a Scot who came into the US through Michigan about 1881 and married Nyda Kennedy. He had several children in mostly Iowa and ultimately settled in Kansas. He had a son Alexander (1885-1970) who settled in California, and a son Harry who settled in Missouri (1882-1963) He also had several daughters. I am a descendant of Alexander and his first wife Jessie Kinnear who died in Canada about 1879. I would love to hear from the California Fyffes and Missouri Fyffes. Need some info yet on Alexander (1) and his death. Also need lots of info on his children. I have a photo of Alexander and Nyda as well as a family photo of all their children taken sometime in 40's or fifties. Any info would be great!

Does anyone have any information on the family of John Fyffe and Mary Low from Dundee Scotland. I know that they had at least 5 children, James, John, Richard, Eliza Jane, and Catherine. Richard and Catherine came to Cleveland OH in the early 1900's.
