Jacob Gape welsh bible is with your cousin Graham Gape, Swansea the son of John Jenkins Gape.
William Gape's children Anne 1802 mary 1807 and Harry1807 Cannot trace William 1809 David 1812 Jacob 1817 went to Ystalyfera and the other brothers wenr to Merthyr, John 1815 Rees 1823 and Joseph 1820 remained in Llangathen and father and son kept the inn the Cottage Inn which is there today but not it's original state. All were named with Gabe except Jacob with Gape without the parents being able to write their names, the vicar or curate would spell the surnames which would result in diferent spellings of the name. Therefore all the Ystalyfera sons went with a 'P' and those who then left for work in Llangennnech and then to Pontardulais changed to a 'B' sometime beteween 1891 and 1901 and there was'nt a deed of poll in those days and would have changed the name by going to a solicitor and making the change official or would have just changed the name by signing documents with the 'B'. Ther was one family who left Ystalyfera for Llangennech and one parent died and went back to Ystalyfers as a Gabe. I did now Joe Gape who worked for the NCB and had a few chats with him and the Ystalyfera family aid that they had changed the name for snobbish reason, perhaps has some truth, my mother would say that they could'nt pronounce the name properly in the Bont. Yet all the others were written as Gabe and William's gravestone is down as a 'B'. If you go back further than 1802 an american cousin paid for a commision on the family tree and the result was the family came from Grosmont and the surname was Gabb. Most of the ystalyfera family who I have spoken to think they came from Scotland, which has some merit as the llangathen area is near/in the Earl Cawdor estate. Other stories being Irish, a german bandsman and a slave trader Julius R Gabe.

I actually descend from William and Rachel Gabe of Llangathen through their son Jacob (1817) too; so undoubtedly, we are cousins. Jacob's youngest son was my great great grandfather.

Just a quick summary the springbok game today.
Ther's an arguement on whether it is Gabe or Gabe and both maybe wrong in that it is Gabb from Grosmont, Monmouthshire.
William Gabe 1802 Llangathen yougest sons went to Ystalyfera (Gape) and the eldest to Merthyr (Gabe). My side of the family were the Ystalyfera branch and moved to Llangennech and then to Pontardulais and changed their 'P' to a 'B' around 1901, the Gape's in Ystalyfera say for snobish reasons, the research proves otherwise although it may have merits in that locals mispronounced the name as 'gab' ( mam dob 1907 said this of living in Pontardulais). The strongholds of the family are both Pontardulais and Ystalyfera with the different spellings of the surname. If you are from William Gape and Sarah of Ystalyfera we would be cousins, I'm a decendant of his brother Jacob. I live in Ystradmynach, Nr Caerphilly moved from Ammanford 30 years.

Hello, this is a bit of a late reply and I'm not sure whether you will get it, but I have been researching the Gabe/Gape family of Llandeilo from William Gabe born approx 1770, married to Rachel in 1802. William was my great x4 grandfather.
They had at least one son, Jacob born 1818 in Capel Isaac. He moved with his wife Sarah to Ystalyfera, Glamorgan during the late 1830s and became a grocer. At some point around now, the surname changed from Gabe to Gape. They had 11 children, the youngest of whom was my great great grandfather.

I have been researching the Gabe/Gape family Llangathen/Llandilo I am trying to 'tie in' Gape/Gabe Families Neath Swansea and Merthyr Tydfil as sons of William and Rachel Gabe Llangathen/ Llandilo.

I course i know where upland is. I have heard of Jimmy Gabe, actually through my daughter who has a friend that says she is related to a Jimmy Gabe somehow. Actually my father was born and raised in Clifton Heights, pa I don't remember my grandfathers name or grandmother. Like is said my parents divorced when i was very young and we didn't have much contact with the family for reasons i have no idea.The name Doris does sound familiar. My mother used to tell me of a Mary? i think she was the only girl in the family of all boys. I think her an my mom got along well. I think there was a Uncle Rich. It sounds like your uncles and aunts may all have been cousins with my uncles and aunts. because i am sure mine all grew up in the clifton heights/upper darby area. Hi Bobbie, This is Barbara Richardson, I was raised in Upland, I'm sure you know where that is. My granddad was George Gabe he married Mary Mcnamee. Their Children were:
Veronica born:1921
Catherine born: 1923
George born: 1924
James born: 1928
On Catherine, George, and James, their year of birth might be a YEAR off. Like I said I grew up in upland and I know that my Uncle James "Jimmy" lived in Garden City,Pa. He was married to my aunt Doris.
My Aunt Catherine "Sissy" she married Joe Carroll.
My mother Veronica married a John Mcdermott at one time.
I spoke to a Alice McGrath? and she is related to my mom but, I don't remember how. Does that name sound familier?

Robert Thomas Gabe. From large family of Gabe's from
Clifton Heights, PA I myself don't live too far from there.
I am out of touch with the family. my parents divorced when i was young. Also have cousins that live in the area.

dear ms barbara coons, my mother was a gabe. gabes are a danish family who migrated from northern germany to denmark probably in the late mid to late 1800s. the earliest references are to johann gabe who sailed down the elbe river, from silesia to altona, near hamburg in germany.the "famous" one in the family was jens frederick gabe, a sailor, who, i am told, captained the SELANDIA-- the first diesel driven ship (boat?) in the world. i do have a little material on the family, and remain in touch with my mother's family in denmark. regards, masood akram
