He has been sorely missed all these years, never forgotten and still loved.... The abrupt loss of someone so young and full of life and hope and plans for his own future is so hard to understand. It just is. Thank you for taking the time to commemorate his having been in our world.

Hi, yes, that's them! Alfred Gabel and Ellen Beale are my husband's ggg grandparents. My husband's line goes down through their daughter Louisa Sherman GABEL, who m. George REBHOLZ; they ended up in central Illinois, where my father-in-law was born.

My mother-in-law and one of my father-in-law's cousin have done some work on this family. Here's an obituary of Louisa that was passed to us:

Obiturary as shared by Cynthia Pries, priesplace@juno.com in March 2006:

She writes: I don't know which paper this was published in as it was cut out and found in Ella's bible. [Ella Rebholz (Pries), the sister of Anna Rebholz (Martin).]

Lousie Sherman Gabel, daughter of Alfred and Ellen Gabel, was born at Hampshire County, Virginia, September 15, 1850 and passed away at her home here June 17, 1932, aged 81 years, 9 months and 2 days. At the age of six years she moved with her parents to Philiadelphia, Pa. In 1858 they came to Onarga, Ill., where she grew to womanhood and at the age of 14 years she united with the Presbyterian church and had always lived a Christian life. On January 4, 1871 she was united in marriage to George Rebholz and made their home on their farm near Thawville until 1903 when they moved to Thawville. To this union 12 children were born, two children preceding her in death.
Besides her husband, she leaves one sister, Mrs E. V. Carney, of Onarga; five sons and five daughters, Arthur and William of Wabash, Indiana, Rudolph and George, Jr., of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Charles, of Richmond, Virginia, and Ernest, at home; Mrs Anna Martin, of Herscher, Ill.; Mrs. Ella Pries, of Wabash, Indiana.; Mrs. Marie Sans, of Roberts, and Mrs Effie Lawrence, of Coumbia City, Ind. Thirty grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren also survive.
Mrs Rebholz was a kind and loving wife and mother.
A bit of her choice poetry: Let us live for those who live us, For those whose hearts are true; For the God who dwells above us, And the good that we may do.
Funeral services were held at the congregational church Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock and was largely attended. The pastor Rev. W. J. Calow, officiated and interment was made in the Thawville cemetery.
Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lawrence and three daughters, of Columbia City, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pries and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Rebholz and family, Arthur Rebholz of Wabash, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pries, of Amboy, Indiana.; George Rebholz, Jr., of Tulsa Oklahome; Charles Rebholz of Richmond, Virginia; Mr and Mrs Ed Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Art Martin and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Singfiel, Mr. and Mrs Roy Martin, Mrs. Earl Dietterle and children, Mr. and Mrs James Weber and children, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hennings and Mrs. Dorothy Essington, all of Herscher, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Poppe, Buckley, Ill; Mr. Paul Rebholz, Kankakee, Ill.; Miss Edna Martin, Frankfort, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Pries, Mr and Mrs. Clarence Pries, Clyde Pries, Miss Overly and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith, Wabash, Indiana; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wagner, Paxton, Ill; Mrs. Rudolph Rebholz, Will Rebholz and Miss Catherine Rebholz, of Chatsworth; Mr. and Mrs. John Rebholz and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Rebholz, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rebholz and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Harris, Mrs. Ed Erving, Mrs Nellie Kratz and family, Mrs. Hugh O'Donnell and son Fred, Mrs. Charles Gilpin and Mr. and Mrs. George Perry and son of Piper City.

I haven't researched this line myself, so I'm sorry I can't offer you more. I would love copies of the photo and/or certificate if you are willing; just let me know the cost and I'll reimburse. And if there's anything I might be able to do from here, let me know.

Many thanks,
Cherie Henderson
New York, NY

Need info on Leora/Leona Gable or Gabel, born 1895 in Indiana and only now sibling Lena Gabel or Gable, born 1897 in Indian. Both spent adult life in Michigan, both buried in Alger Co in MI Upper Peninsula. Leora married Ralph Harris, then an Arsenault. Lena also married and lived in Alger County. Question....Ralph Harris' father, Charles Harris had a son after his wife died. This son was raised by his maternal grandmother, Cordelia Jane Gunkle Tallant Gabel or Gable and her husband, Lewis Harvey Gable/Gabel. Is there any connection between these two families. Would appreciate any information on any of those mentioned here.

I believe that Nicholas is my great great great grandfather,
if my research is correct. I believe that Nicholas Gabel (great great great grandfather) born 1870 and had a wife named Margaret. The had a son name Christian (great great grandfather) born abt 1816 in Germany. He married
Elizabeth Gentz in Wisconson. One of their children was Albert Gabel(my great grandfather) born approx 1855. Albert married Anna Kistler (or Kessler) of Iowa. They had a son Otto Albert Gabel (my grandfather) born
February 26, 1882. Albert died an early death probably before Otto was two or three. Anna remarried to George Rasque and had serval children.
Does any of this sound familar? If it does, any information you can give me would be a great help.
Thank you

Noreen Galvin

The name "Kuffler" is actually a very GERMAN name, and not a Czech name. My Grandpa Kuffler originally came from the Czech Republic, but there were many German Jews who lived there.

Elliott

Re: Adam Goebel/Gabel , Luzerne Co., PA

Cindi,

I am researching Adam Gable from the Wilkes-Barre section of Luzerne County. He was married to Catherine Gable. I know he lived in the area from at least 1870-1900. Prior to that he lived in NY state, where 2 of his children were born. Not sure exactly when/where he entered country. He listed birthplace as Bavaria.

I am at a brick wall with him, but a professional researcher suggested I track down Jacob Gable who lived in the area at the same time and also listed Bavaria as birthplace on his census to see if possibley the two were brothers. Do you think this may be your jacob??

Kim
