How Jean Gaboriau did gets the "dit Lapalme"

My grand father (Hormidas Lapalme son of Jean Baptiste Gaboriau dit Lapalme) was one of the first who did get rid of the Gaboriau name. Jean Gaboriau (son of Pierre Gaboriau St-Jérôme-de-Bordeaux) saved a few peoples from drowning in the rapids of Chambly. Then he received some sort of a medal wich could be called in french: La Palme. That's how Jean Gaboriau dit Lapalme did gets is surname.
