Looking for any information on a Tommy John Gaddis from Howard or Seviere County Arkansas. We know of one son, Charles Marion Gaddis, born in 1879 or 1880. Charles Marion's mother was Nancy. I don't think Tommy and Nancy were married at the time, but not sure.

I have been working on my late Mother-in-laws family tree. Her name was Montie Watson Johnson and her Mother was Charlie's sister Lealer Gaddis Watson. If you have ancestry.com please look at my site which includes a picture of Charlie and many pictures of Lealer and Samuel Lee Watson and family. I have also found an orginal newspaper clipping from Lealer's death which mentions Charlie and all of her siblings. John Gaddis was the grandfather and he lived with Lealer and Samuel Lee on the farm. We are going to include some stories that Montie told us about John and having him around as a kid. Feel free to contact me. Teresa Cunningham Johnson TeresaCJohnson@gmail.com

Y-DNA on ANcestry

I have just copied my Y-DNA test results from Genebase over to Ancestry.com and have joined the Gaddis DNA Group. That makes two in the group and I know a third Gaddis who will join shortly. I encourage other Gaddis males to also transfer your results from other services or take the ancestry 46 marker test. My two goals are to verify that Captain Rees Gaddis descended from William Gaddis and Priscilla Bowen, and to see if the Perry Gaddis descendants in Fayette Co, PA are also William Gaddis descendants. DNA testing should help sort out all the various Gaddis lines around the world.

I know that she had a sister named Belle (and had other brothers and sisters) and that she is from Cincinnati. She married Francis Ernst (I don't know the year, but can find out) and had two children Donald Ernst and June Lorraine Ernst (June is my Grandmother). I can fill in more details if this ends up being a family connection. Let me know if this is connecting any dots for you.
Gaddis in Ohio and Indiana 1820

A study of the Gaddis households in the 1820 and 1830 Ohio and Indiana censuses (with spelling variations) would go a long way toward identifying the several Gaddis lines in the US today. The Old Northwest was a crossroads, of sorts, on the way west. It seems that Ohio was populated by a lot of Pennsylvanians, Virginians, New Yorkers, and Irish and that Indiana was settled by those groups moving west as well as by Gaddises up from Kentucky and North Carolina.

So here is a list of the Gaddis households in the 1820 Ohio and Indiana censuses (drawn from the ancestry.com census index with spellings as shown in that index) with some notes I have added. If anyone can add to the identities of these households please jump in. The numbers below the notes are the census category counts from the 1820 census (six male categories, five female categories, four other categories). Where x’s appear the counts were not available or not readable.

OHIO 1820

Name	Location (Twp, County, State)

01.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for weighing in on this. Larry Gaddis has sent some hand-written genealogy notes scribed by his grandfather Lewis Ross Gaddis that names Capt Rees' daughters as Priscilla (m. Thomas Cook), Lydia (m. Thomas McGrew), and Rachel (never married). I haven't dug into the notes thoroughly yet, but they also refer to John Gaddis (the one who died in Greene Co, OH in 1807) as perhaps a brother or half brother to Capt Rees and I think, due to his age and some references in the Kentucky Tax records, that John Gaddis might have been Rees' son and not his brother. I'm betting that Capt Rees Gaddis was married before 1785, maybe as early as 1780 or before. Do you know of any info on his first marriage? A study of those KY Tax records and the census records up through 1830 makes me think that Capt Rees had more children than just Rees Jr and three daughters.

Jim Gaddis

Re: Rees Gaddis' [Washington Co, PA and Campbell Co, KY] Missing Son

"Capt" Rees was my great-great-great-grandfather. Campbell County tax records show he was in Kentucky by 1796 as does the proceedings concerning the will of Rees' future wife Mary McGrew Perry. The only child I know anything about is his youngest, also named Rees, who later Federal Census records show was born in 1795 and who died Jan. 28 1882. Tracking Rees, father and son, in Kentucky is much easier that tracking the elder Rees in Pennsylvania.

What I do know is that the names "John" and "William" do reoccur in Rees' grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But they're not uncommon names either.

The younger Rees had 2 children: Sarah Ann and John Carter. Rees Sr.'s mother Priscilla was the daughter of Henry Bowen and Jane Carter, so it appears that Rees was preserving a name from his grandmother's side.

Sarah Ann married James Madison Boyd and they had 3 children that I can trace: Henry b. 1848, Lucy b. 1850 and Virginia b. 1851. Virginia "Ginny" Boyd married James F. Dye in 1887. There doesn't seem to be any Gaddis family preservation connected to those names.

John Carter married Emma Jane Robson in 1860 and had 10 children:
Mary Louise 1862-1951 (my great-grandmother, and possibly her middle name is for Rees' first wife Louisa Smith). She Had 12 children. Emma, Anabel, Fanamae, John, Walter, Mary, Carl, Edna, Clara, Lindsey, Roberta and Mildred. John is the only 'historical' Gaddis name
George Sherman. 1864-1947 Named after Emma's older brother. Never married, no children
Sallie 1866-b.1880 died as a child. No other information
William R. 1868-1939 Married, no children. William has his ggg-grandfather name
Fanamae 1871-1944 Married twice, 3 children
John Carter Jr. 1875-1935 married, 3 children. Several Gaddis are named John
Alpheus Blinn 1878-1911 married, 1 child, he died just a few months after her birth. Named after noted Campbell County teacher Alpheus Blinn
Harry Wilber 1881-1948 Never married, committed to the Central State Hospital For Insane
Lewis Ross 1883-1959 married 1 son. Named after noted Campbell County churchman Lewis Ross.
So there are 2 common family names: William and John although I believe I've seen the name Alpheus Gaddis connected to Thomas Gaddis' family too.

I've seen some information about John Gaddis who died in 1807. What links him to Rees Gaddis? Did he accompany his father to Kentucky? It seems Rees still serving in the militia in 1782-1783 and was married by around 1785, so John (and William) would have been around 9-10-11 at most when their widowed father moved to Kentucky.

BTW I just found out that Lewis Ross has a living grandson. He'd be an all male link back to Rees, which I am not. I'll ask him about DNA testing.

Scott Larsen

Re: Lydia Gaddis - Campbell Co KY

That very well may be. But in reading Thomas F Taliaferro's history it seems to me that he's referring to the elder Rees, as both Rees and Mary McGrew had property just south of Thomas' father William Richard Taylor Taliaferro home, built 1830, on the Ohio river, just beyond the mouth of the Little Miami. The Methodists and Baptists first met in Taliaferro's home and by 1831 he had built church (meeting house really).

Also, a history of the First Baptist Church of Newport mentions that the younger Rees and his (second) wife Rachel were strong Baptists and were instrumental in founding and organizing the Church. There's a stained glass window placed in the memory of Rees' son John still at that church today. But Thomas states that the Rees who cast the deciding vote was a Baptist by heritage and not by practice, so it seems his story favors the elder Rees.

By 1830 the younger Rees was living more inland, near where St. Luke's Hospital is now, with his wife and children. The 1830 Federal Census shows a Rees Gaddis of 80 and under 90 living near William Taliaferero and Rees Gattis of 30 and under 40 living near Jas. Dye in the Highlands (BTW, William Taliaferro's grandson by his first wife married Rees "Sr.'s" great-grandaugher. They're my great grandparents.)

The younger Rees is the only child of "Capt." Rees that I have any information on, being my great-great-great grandfather. The 1785 Washington Co. census shows that the elder Rees was married and the 1790 Federal Census shows a 2 young males and 3 females in his household. But as to who they were and their exact relation to Rees "Sr" I don't know.

Still I can't answer whether Lydia Gaddis is Rees "Jr's" sister or cousin. More research is needed and I'm certainly looking forward to finding out.

As to Rees Sr. rank of Captain: In 1793 is was voted Captain of the 4th Company of the First Washington County Brigade. Here's the reference:

http://www.archive.org/stream/6thpennsylvaniaarch04harruoft/...
Pennsylvania archives (1852)
Volume: 4
Subject: Pennsylvania -- History Sources
Publisher: Harrisburgh [etc.] C.E. Aughinbaugh [etc.]
Possible copyright status: NOT_IN_COPYRIGHT
Language: English
Call number: AAP-5891
Digitizing sponsor: MSN
Book contributor: Robarts - University of Toronto
Collection: toronto||p. 317:A General return of the election of Militia Officers for the First Washington County Brigate...p. 325 4th Company Captain Rees Gaddis

Another question to answer then is what part, if any, did Capt. Rees play in the Whiskey Rebellion? Did he protest with his brother Thomas or seek to preserve order with his commander-in-chief President Washington?

Scott Larsen
Great-grandson of Mary Louise Gaddis

Am looking for the parents/grandparents of Mary Jane Gaddis born circa 1834-married Charles Wilson Jones in 1860. Her parents may have been William B Gaddis and Margaret N Gaddis. I am confused as to whether Margaret was acutually a Gaddis prior to her marriage. Have not been able to determine the parents of Margaret and William and if they are descended from Alexander Gaddis. Anyone got information on this family?

Hello, Carolyn Gaddis. I replied last month to your post that John B Gaddis is buried in Wetumka City Cemetery. I've been concentrating on one of his sons-in-law, Joseph Jay DOWNS, who married John B.'s first child, Bashaba, known as Bashie for most of her life. I've found a picture among things left me by my mother (John B.'s granddaughter) with "Aunt Ludie's husband" written on the back of it.) In hope that you see this post, I'm wondering whether you know of a female relative of John B. or his wife whose first name was Ludie or something similar? Please feel free to respond to debra.gallagher@sympatico.ca.

Rees Gaddis' [Washington Co, PA and Campbell Co, KY] Missing Son

According to the 1790 Washington Co, PA census Rees Gaddis had in his household:

1 male > 16, [probably Rees Gaddis]
2 males <16, [possibly sons John and ???]
3 females [possibly wife ??? and daughters Priscilla and Lydia]

Allowing for Rees being the male > 16 and his wife being one of the females, we can speculate that in 1790 Rees had two sons and two daughters. We know also that he had another daughter, Rachael, in 1793 and another son, Rees, in 1795. That makes a total of three sons and three daughters. Of these six children we have the names of five: sons John and Rees, and daughters Priscilla, Lydia, and Rachael.

So who was the other son? Does anybody know?

A William Gaddis appears on an 1810 Randolph Twp, Montgomery County, OH tax list and in the 1820 Randolph Twp, Miami Co, OH census. Could this William Gaddis be the missing son of Rees Gaddis? Some reasons to think so are that:

1) He lived very near Greene County where Rees’ son John Gaddis died in 1807. It is not unreasonable to think that Rees’ two oldest sons could have both been in Ohio in the early 1800s.

2) Rees’ father was named William Gaddis and it would be natural for Rees to have named one of his sons William.

3) I don’t think this William Gaddis has been identified with any Gaddis line yet.

Do any of you Rees Gaddis researchers have any evidence for this speculation one way or the other?
Karen,

This is a repost of a message I left on Rootsweb a couple of days ago:

A study of the census records has provided me some strong circumstantial evidence as to Perry Gaddis's origins. Contrary to my earlier conclusion, William and David Gaddis of Wharton Twp, Fayette Co, PA in 1840 ARE connected with the other Fayette County, PA Gaddises. William Gaddis is, in fact, the son of Colonel Thomas Gaddis and David is William's son. I thought they had gone to Highland Co, OH when Col Thomas Gaddis went in 1814, but no, they did not go to Highland Co, OH until 1841. Neither William nor David show up in any Ohio censuses until 1850 when David appears in the 1850 Highland Co, OH census and both disappear from the Fayette Co, PA censuses after 1840. According to the 1850 census David's children were born in PA until the birth of daughter in 1841 in OH. William and David thus remained in Wharton Twp, Fayette Co, PA until after 1840. The fact that Perry Gaddis was in Wharton Twp in 1850 and 1860, and that everything else fits with the census records l!
eads me to believe that Perry is a son of WIlliam Gaddis and Mary Bowell and a brother of David Gaddis. That would make Perry a grandson of Col Thomas Gaddis. He stayed in Wharton Twp when William and David left for Ohio in 1841.

Until I find evidence to the contrary I am going to hypothesize that the Perry Gaddis parentage mystery is solved. So, all you Perry Gaddis searchers, please weigh in and let me know if you have other information to prove or disprove this reckoning.
William Gaddis 50-60 years old
1 female 50-60
1 male 20-30
1 female 10-15

David Gaddis 30-40 years old
1 female 20-30
1 male < 5
2 females < 5

Neither William nor David are in Wharton Twp censuses before nor after 1840 although there was a WIlliam Gaddis in Georges Twp in 1820 and 1830. Might have moved from Georges Twp or might have been living in Wharton Twp temporarily on their way west. No apparent connection with the Gaddises of Union and other Fayette County, PA townships at that time, but I suspect that William was the father of Perry Gaddis who remained in Wharton Twp for a couple of more decades and died in Dunbar, PA in 1886. Any clues to the identity of these two are welcome.
In my earlier post I failed to list three more Gaddis families that were listed in the 1830 Fayette County, PA census. They were:

William Gaddes - Georges Twp – Males 0-0-1-1-1-0-1
Thomas Gaddes – Georges Twp – Males 1-0-0-0-1
Ruth Gaddes – Union Twp – 1 female aged 20-30

One of the biggest mysteries in the Gaddis genealogy is who Perry Gaddis’s parents were. I am leaning toward his being the son of William Gaddis of Wharton Twp, Fayette Co, PA. Perry was living in Wharton Township in the 1850 and 1860 censuses before moving to Dunbar between 1860 and 1870 and these are the only two Gaddises listed in the 1840 census in Wharton Township:

Ages:
5 10 15 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100 100+
Name Place Males Count	Females Count
David Gaddis Wharton, Fayette, Pennsylvania 1000010000000-2000100000000
William Gaddis Wharton, Fayette, Pennsylvania 0000100100000-0010000100000

My hunch is pure speculation at this point, but I think Perry might have been a little older than the census records show, perhaps born in 1816 which would make him 24 at the time of the 1840 census.

•	William Gaddis, who was between 50-60 years old, has one male between 20-30 years old in his household in the 1840 census – perhaps Perry.

•	David Gaddis is between 30-40 years old in that census and I think he is a son of William Gaddis also, but not old enough to be Perry’s father.

This raises the question of who was William Gaddis who lived in Wharton Twp? Was he from the Col. Thomas Gaddis line; or John Gaddis, or Robert Gaddis, or Henry Gaddis lines – all of whom were in Fayette County by 1785. William and David of Wharton Twp should not be confused with another William Gaddis and David Gaddis (son and grandson of Col. Thomas Gaddis) who moved to Clinton Co, OH in 1814.
Scott - Thomas F Taliaferro's reference to his maternal great uncle may have been to Lydia Gaddis McGrew's brother Rees Gaddis (1795-1882) rather than to the elder Rees Gaddis, in which case Lydia could still be the elder Rees Gaddis's daughter.

Also, I've seen all the references to "Capt" Rees Gaddis and have assumed that it referred to the elder Rees Gaddis of Washington Co, PA. I thought he was a Captain in the Monongalia Militia, however, I can't find that Rees was anything other than a private in the militia. Hence, I wonder about the title Captain.

William Gaddis –Early American Progenitor of the Gaddis Family

There was in Colonial America a man named William Gaddis about whom little is known, but who is the patriarch of one existing line of the Gaddis family in the United States today. One published genealogical account in the 1890s says that William came from Ireland during the Irish migration to Virginia in 1737, but William’s parents’ names and his birthplace are not known, so he may or may not have been an immigrant to the Americas. Some researchers link him to James Geddes and Margaret Jackson of Scotland and James’ father Alexander Geddes. Other speculation is that he sprang from one of the several Colonial Gaddis families in Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania. Whatever his origins may be, his first recorded appearance is in the Northern Neck of Virginia where he served as a surveyor’s chainman in the early 1740s. This is what is known about William Gaddis:

• He was probably born between 1700 and 1715.
• He lived at Apple Pie Ridge, Frederick County, near Winchester, Virginia from at least 1740 through the 1750s.
• He was a landowner in Virginia, a voter, and not a Quaker although he lived near the Quaker meeting of Hopewell and interacted frequently with Quakers.
• He was married to Priscilla Bowen (1718-1796), a daughter of Henry Bowen of Cecil County, Maryland and Frederick County, Virginia.
• About 1762 he and his family moved from Frederick County, Virginia to a 421 acre farm on Bear Garden Mountain in what is now Hampshire County, West Virginia near the community of Bloomery, West Virginia.
• He died in 1773 and his marker is still in place on his homestead in West Virginia. (A photo of his grave may be viewed at this web site: http://www.historichampshire.org/cems/gaddis.htm).
• He and Priscilla had at least four sons – John (1741-1827), Thomas (1742-1834), Robert (1749-1834), and Henry (1753-1833 or later), plus probably two others, Rees (1755-before 1820) and William (about 1754-1777).
• He and Priscilla also had a daughter, Anna Gaddis (1747-1778) who was married to Levi Springer.
• There may have been other children as well whose names are lost to history.

Some time subsequent to William’s death Priscilla Gaddis moved across the Allegheny Mountains to what is now Fayette County, Pennsylvania , perhaps after, but probably with her sons. It is said that she travelled alone on a mule carrying her waffle iron. She died in Uniontown, Pennsylvania in 1796 and is buried at the Great Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery there.

The son William died in the Revolutionary War on Sullivan’s Island near Charleston, South Carolina. The other five sons moved to southwestern Pennsylvania before 1780, with Rees settling in Washington County and the other four sons settling near Uniontown in what is now Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

The eldest son, John, remained in Fayette County until his death. He was a lawyer and farmer and owned several pieces of land north of Uniontown. Not as active in local affairs as his younger brother Thomas, John nevertheless was a prominent man of early Fayette County. He served under his brother Thomas in the Sandusky Expedition.

The son Thomas was known as Col. Thomas Gaddis. He built “Fort Gaddis” south of Uniontown, Pennsylvania; was Colonel of the Monangalia Militia during the Revolutionary War; was third in command of the disastrous Sandusky Expedition in 1782 during which Col. William Crawford was captured and burned at the stake; was arrested and jailed in Philadelphia for raising a “Liberty Pole” near Uniontown during the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion; and moved with many members of the Gaddis family to Clinton County, Ohio in 1814.

The son Robert remained in Fayette County until his death. He, like John, owned a sizeable tract of land north of Uniontown.

The son Henry was in the 8th Virginia Continental Line during the Revolutionary War and was at Valley Forge during the famous cold winter of 1777-1778. He moved on to Stark County, Ohio about 1816 where many of his descendants still reside.

The son Rees was a Captain in the Monangalia Militia. He moved to Campbell County, Kentucky before 1800. His descendants are not as well documented as the other sons’.

Beginning about 1984 one of William Gaddis’ 5th great grandsons, Jim Gaddis of Grifton, North Carolina, began documenting as many descendants of William Gaddis and Priscilla Bowen as he could. His current listing is displayed online at http://ww2.esn.net/monument/gaddiswm/. Because this work is in the public domain, much of it, including errors, has been copied into other web sites and databases.

Now that DNA testing has become commercial, it may be possible to use DNA testing to further the research of this Gaddis line. Two obvious goals that DNA testing might help accomplish are to:
1) Prove or disprove descent from William Gaddis for Gaddis lines that are not clearly descended from him (such as today’s Perry Gaddis descendants in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and Rees Gaddis descendants across the country), and
2) Determine William Gaddis’s ancestry and place of origin through Y-DNA comparisons with Gaddises of Scotland, Ireland, and other foreign countries.

Jim Gaddis has had tested and recorded his own Y-DNA (44 markers) through genebase.com that may be used as a baseline comparison to other male Gaddises. The Y-DNA of each of William Gaddis’s direct line male descendants should match very closely to Jim Gaddis’ Y-DNA. As yet, no one else from the William Gaddis line has been tested and compared, although one other male Gaddis from a known different Gaddis line has been compared and was confirmed to have significant Y-DNA differences.

If you are a male Gaddis (Y-DNA tests are only for direct line father-to-son-to-son-to-son etc relationships), I invite you to please contact me about perhaps testing your Y-DNA to see if you are or are not related to this William Gaddis line and to broaden the base of study for all Gaddis lines.

Jim Gaddis
Grifton, NC 28530
monument@esn.net
John B. Gaddis was also my great grandfather. His first child with Nancy (?) Wilmeth (Wilma?) MILLS was Bashie Gaddis DOWNS, who was my mother's mother. Ironically, Bashie died in Shawnee, Oklahoma and is buried in Dixie Oklahoma. We don't believe she ever knew that her father was living so close to where she was living with J. DOWNS, her husband (with whom she "eloped" about 1901-2.) Although my mother remembers family visits with Bashie's sister Maggie BROWN. Maggie and her husband Horace are also buried in Wetumka, are they not? I met Mable GADDIS PACK (J.B.'s last child, as far as we know) in 1977 in Patterson, CA with my parents, Josie DOWNS Hawkins and Earl HAWKINS. She told us lots of family stories and filled in some blanks for my mother. I've hit a wall in finding J. DOWNS but will happily share the GADDIS/DOWNS informal information I have. Please feel free to respond to debra.gallagher@sympatico.ca.

John Bunyan Gaddis, buried Wetumka, Oklahoma, married Nancy? Wilma? Wilmeth? Mills?, father of 8 children who survived. One son was Andrew (?) Jackson Gaddis, called "Jack" by his family. Siblings: "Bashie" Gaddis, married J Downs before 1899, eldest; Arch Allan (known by family as "Boss", Lovis, Cleveland, George, Maggie, Mabel. Mabel, the baby of the family, died in or near Patterson, California, after 1977. Mabel believed she was born in about 1899 in Texas, so believes Jack would have been born well before that, and possibly, as some of the older siblings, in Alabama. Mabel beieved Jack was buried somewhere in Arizona. Any matches here?

I have some follow up information.

Harriet McGrew, the daughter of Thomas McGrew and Lydia Gaddis, was the 2nd wife of William Richard Taylor Taliaferro. Their son Thomas F Taliaferro wrote a history of the Methodist Church his father founded in which he mentions Reese Gaddis [called Capt. Rees Gaddis in this thread] and identifies him as his maternal great uncle.

So it appears that she wasn't Reese's daughter. The next step is to identify who's daughter she was.
