on the Ancestry.com message board was this 2010 post: "Gowdy family reunion, jdlgowdy, 3 Oct 2010." Since it appears you could be related, you may want to contact this person on the message board. Also, look at the posts of the other families in the line (i.e. Gaude, Gowdy, etc.); I think one is a family historian willing to share their findings. All are sharing many types of family info., resources & asking/answering questions. One line has over 100 messages exchanging ideas and questions. Hope that helps as well. Find them to complete the circle.

Hi Leslie,

My name is Elizabeth Gade. My father was Paul Gade who was born in Minnesota and raised in Illinois. His father Edward H. H. Gade was a Missouri Lutheran Pastor who served in various states but died in Illinois. I have traced the family tree back to Germany but have not been able to get any further. I have always wondered if and how my family line might be connected to the Danish composer Neils Gade.

Unfortunately you do not mention when your Gade relative was born.
I can, however, tell you that a brother to my mother´s father was called Niels Christian Gade (Nielsen). He was born in Ringe, Fyn the 7th of April 1898, which may be too early for you?
I do not know if he emigrated.

The pronounciation in Denmark is like this: you say "gather" - take the "r" away - and you have Gade.
Kind regards.

hello Caroline - Christian Gade is also my ancestor. I have discovered that he came out on the ship 'caesar and helene' from hamburg in 1857.he settled initially near the saddleworth area in s.a but then moved to the melrose/willochra plains area in s.a. His son Wilhelm is my great great grandfather. My grandfather was adopted by his uncle Ernst and aunt Martha after his mother Caroline died when he was about 3 years old. (Caroline was Ernst's sister and died at 24 yrs of age) Maybe you have been named after her ? have a lot of other details that I obtained from lutheran Archives in Adelaide, also a photo of the children of Ernst and Martha but seeing your message is almost 3 yrs old I will leave it at this and wait until i hopefully get a reply.

I am looking for Henry C. Gade, my gggrandfather. According to the census he was born in Wisconsin in March 1846. He was married to Mary Ann Stock (1882) and his oldest daughter, Laura, was born in California (1883). I think he died in 1926. Except for the 1900 & 1910 census I can't find any trace of him or his ancestors. Any suggestions?

There are many Gades from German/ Dutch ancestry that all have great.... grandparents named John Gade- Some decendents are in Ohio, Some are in Arizona- the Gade castle is/ was in Arizona in recent years. The name Gade dates thousands of years B.C.or B.C.E to Spain- the city that is now named Cadiz in southern Spain was named Gade and Gades respectfully, through the Roman empire and as I said many centuries before-in Spain. The original pronunciation is Gade' pronounced with long vowels - that is long a and long e . We still use this pronunciation and we are from German ./ Dutch couple that arrived in Ohio in 1865. I hope this answers some of your questions. There are Gades in English public military and death records - also census records in Germany, England , Denmark, and Spain. We are in Tennessee and Ohio and Arizona mostly. recently found more Gades in Alabama- see the web Captain Daniel Gade...

This is my grandmother. She was born in Denmark. She married James Arthur Rex b.1886 around 1907, a carpenter and Mason whose family came from Ohio later moving toChicago, IL. Anna may have had Swedish relatives. She had 3 children James b. 1912, Jr., Marion b.1918-21 and Ethel b.1913, my mother. Spoke often of Pennsylvania Dutch. Anna moved to St. Petersburg, FL in the 1950,s but relocated to Chicago after her husband passed, in her frailty from possible cancer and later died there. Marion died in the 1980's and James Jr. died in his early 30's in a train accident in the Chicago train yards. . Anna may have had a sister or sister-in-law named Thera or Theresa. Anna's mother's name may have been Andrea Nelson. This was her stepmother. I am seeking lineage info due to the inheritable condition of ovarian cancer to which my mother succumbed in 1997. Any help or info would be appreciated. I have more available upon request.

In danish you would pronounce Gade like Ga-the (the as like the english word). This is due to the "soft D", which is one of several reasons that most people find danish rather hard to learn. The name could be translated to "street", but its origin may be and probably is something else.
Hope this helps.

My great grandparents are John and Augusta Gady. John was born 1873 in Michigan and Augusta was born 1876 in Germany. John's father's name is Daniel and he was born in Germany. Augusta's maiden name is some variation of Selinsky, Selinska, Schalinski, etc.

John and Augusta had 8 children I know of. Francis b 1896, John b. 1897, Lizzie b. 1899, Joseph, Frank, George, Edward, and Martha b. 1906. Augusta died in 1916 and John died in 1917, I believe both in Detroit.

Martha, my grandmother went to live with Thomas Lewandowski. She later married his nephew, Leo Moranty.

I am looking for any information.

I believe I am related to Niels also. My dad was Leslie Christian Gade and his brother was Elven Christian Gade, they were born on a farm just west of Fargo,N.D. I do remember hearing dad mentioning that name. Drop me a line, we may be related.

Various spellings & origins

I have been doing my only family Genealogy and have discovered that Goude is one of the many versions of spellings of the name Goudie which originated in the Shetland Islands. It is actually Norwegian in its early 13th century beginnings with Gade. If any of you are having a hard time finding your name - here are some other versions - Goudie, Goude, Goudy, Gaudie, Gadie, Galdie, Gowdy, Gowdie, Gowde, etc.
