I know this is a very old post, but I've been searching for information on Edward Gaertner (b. April 30, 1825). I don't know how much information you have, but I have quite a bit from Edward on down. The problem is finding out who his father really is. It is suspected that his father is a brother to Carl Ignaz Gaertner, b. ABT. 1784 in Luessen, Silesia.

I hope we can help each other out on this. :-)

Dear David,

Phillipe Eugene Gartner was my great great grandfather! He re-married after the death or divorce of his first wife. He married Mona Emily Hibbs who was born in Longton, Stoke on Trent on 18th April 1875. Her daughter Dorothy Mae Gaertner is my great grandma. Do you know anything about the other children of this marriage? I really look forward to hearing from you and how we are related!

(I've attached a family tree for you to look at - I'm the daughter of Ann Wilkinson nee Hook).

Best wishes,

Nicola O'Riordan

Hi,

As a Gaertner with German background, from England, may I offer a little tip when researching this name? Check everything that begins with a G! The number of mis spellings I have come across beggars belief! Gardner & its variations are common, as is Gertner (which I am told is the pronunciation.)and of course Gartner.
Good luck and happy hunting!
Hi Rob,

I don’t think there is a connection, but I never write anything off until its well dead! I have come across some info on your names in the course of my research. It may help you.

I have come across a CARL Albert Gaertner b. ¼ Dec 1883 in Hackney.
Also a FRIEDRICH August Gaertner (Fred?) b ¼ Sept 1880 also Hackney
There dates would sit with the parents being married in April ’79 (Hackney is part of London) The Church Friedrich & Agnes was married in was St. Matthew, Bethnal Green

In the 1891 census there is a

I have come across an Albert Friedrich Gaertner b. 9/3/1939 d. August 1996. May be no relation

There also seems to be a couple of Great War Racords for a Carl Fr. Gaertner & a Fredk. Carl Gaertner
Finally a Frederick Gaertner age 62 (so the age fits) born Germany is shown in the 1891 census with an address of the Hackney Union Workhouse as a pauper. There was also a Florence (age 12 but it could be months!) and Frederick aged 11 I am sure this would be the family you refer to. I believe there are good records for this organisation
Carl would heve been born in Stoke NeWington a district of North London as is Tottenham & Bethnal Green.

One thig you must bear in mind is the spelling of the m ane I have had all sorts of variants, and if its wrong on the original its wrong on the transcript!

I hope some of this is useful to you, but if you want any more info please let me know (or email me (gaertnerdv@aol.com)

G'day David,

I have some Gaertner/Gartner connections from London I believe.

My mother's father called himself Charles Albert Gartner. He was very secretative about his history. All my mother can recall is:

1. he was born in London c1885 and orphaned at a young age
2. he had one brother Fred (a merchant seaman) and two sisters
3. he was a ships carpenter and made his way to Aus where he married in 1916
3. His brother Fred visited Charles once when my mother was young, but he was thrown out because he had had a few too many drinks, never to be seen again
4. On Charles' marriage cert, his mother is Emily Agnes Wenn and father Albert/Albers Hugo Gartner (deceased)
5. I have tracked down an Emily Agnes Wenn marrying a Friedrich August Gaertner (a baker) Bethnal Green on 27/4/1879, the ages fit. His father was Johann Gottlob Gaertner (a weaver) and hers John Willim Wenn (a watchmaker).
6. They had 4 children (I am waiting on the mail from England to confirm this, but looks rairly certain), Friedrich August b Hackney 1880 (Fred?), Carl Albert (Charles?) b Hackney 1883, Alice Renate b Hackney 1886 and Florence b Hackney 1889 d Hackney 1891.
7. Emily Gaertner died 1889 and Friedrick Snr in 1893 at the Hackney infirmery.
8. I have a record from the 1901 Census showing a "Carl Alberts Galbert", grandson aged 19, living with John W Wenn and family in Tottenham, although it says Carl was born in Stoke Nevington (where ever that is).

Any connection with your family?.....Regards Rob lee
My father, Michael P. Gaertner (1907-1973) had a sister named Anna close to his age so she wouldn't be the same Anna. Michael & Anna grew up in southern Illinois. I have no idea where their family was prior to this time. Michael & Anna's parents were Joseph & Catherine Gaertner.

Re: John Gaertner-France-IA

He was born in France in 1793. He married Madeleine Bouillon in 1818. Later he married Theresa Sobolik (abt 1860).

He had 6 children by his first wife and two by his second, though they may have been hers from a previous marriage. The 1880 census records indicate Bohemia as the country of origin of the father. But the children's ages in the census would indicate otherwise.

James Enderle has catalogued some good information on the following web site:

www.familysearch.org

Hope this is useful.

Jeff Kapler
I am also a born Gaertner and have been trying in vain to find out more about my father's side of the family. I still have relatives in Germany but they don't have much information. My father and his father were from Bavaria (Karl and Carl). My GGfather was from the Oberpfalz and worked for the railroad in Germany. My father is the one who came to the US but there may be others before him that he never knew about.

To Whom...:

Yes you are correct in assuming that the original spelling of Gartner would most likely (99.999%) was Gaertner, but of course the umlaut is substituted with a trailing e for English representation. And the pronunciation would make the aer combo sound like air.

I have the same name, I was born in the U.S., but I have an extended family in Germany, and of course they are all Gaertners.

Yes, a Gaertner is someone who does gardening, but this goes far beyond growing several rose bushes and a half dozen tomato plants. But it isn't quite to the extent of a large farm operator, for this man is a Bauer. And also a tree gardener, or orchard man would be a Baumgaertner (Baum = tree).

Although I was born in the U.S. I have had the pleasure of spending considerable time with my extended family. (Both my mother & father ahve family in southern Germany.) I was born in 1930, but owing to the existing prejudices against the German people, my parents did not instill a knowledge of the German language. However, my wife and I have spent considerable time in southern (Baden-Wuertemburg & Bavaria)Germany since 1965, pleasure & business, and we have also lived there for a spell, and both of us have amassed a certain amount of German during these excursions. In addition to learning some of the German language, we have totally immersed ourselves in the German culture, which we both have a deep respect and fondness for.

So, if you are of a German lineage, or partial lineage, I would strongly urge you to learn a bit of the culture. There are many beautiful & exciting things about their overall history.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Gartner (My father was a Gaertner)

The DAR errected a tablet at St. Anthony's Church that reads"John Gaertner fought with Napoleon Bonaparte in Moscow and Waterloo. Marked by the DAR 1925".

Thanks!

Re: Gaertner, Gartner near Black Forest

Hi Kathleen, Don, etc.

I too am looking for a Gartner whose details are murky,
but is reputed to have been born "outside the Black
Forest".

My g-grandfather, John Frank (or Franklin?) Gartner was born on 5-27-1873. When he was two his mother (name unknown)
died, and the father (name unknown) soon married
Elizabeth ???. Between 1876-1878 the father died, leaving
the stepmother with John (and perhaps siblings -- unknown).
Elizabeth remarried to Gerhard Brandenstein (perhaps
from the local area, though some suggestion of Bavaria)
who was a farmer and John became the oldest child,
eventually gaining 3 half-brothers. The whole family
emigrated to Long Island, NY 1880-1881 (I have not
found any emigration records yet). Elizabeth died in
1883, but Gerhard lived for many years as a farmer.

I am looking for any guidance about likely places around
the Black Forest. I'll assume that John's father was a
farmer, due to the last name and the fact that the
remarriage was to a farmer, who perhaps new the
family in some way.

Thanks for any ideas you have.

ken.gartner - at - charter.net
