I understand your frustration at not finding earlier records. I can find no immigration record for Anna Gegan that matches the birthdate and approximate arrival dates that I have for her.

I have, however, found an 1860 census record that could be for your Patrick Gagen. He has been indexed as "Pateric Gaggen" with a birthdate of 1835 and is shown living in Pine Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania with a James Gaggen and next door to a Chris Gagen and his family.

Hopefully you can find this via an Ancestry search. But if not let me know and I can mail it to you.

Clare

Clare,

Despite continuing to look for more info on Patrick Gagen, I am at a wall. The only records I have been able to find have been census records (1870 to 1900). I have tried to locate him in an 1860 census without luck. The same with immigration, military, and other records. It is as if he just appeared! I think the spelling of his surname was probably altered, which also presents an issue. Because of these challanges, I have not been able to locate any other family besides his wife and children.

It seems that you may be onto somthing because Gagen/Gegan is not a common name, and it seems like more than coindidence would place two similarly named persons about the same age, in the same area, around the same time. Perhaps if they are related, they immigrated together? If so, this might make an immigration record a lot easier to locate.

I moved away from researching him because I got frustrated, but with your info to consider, I will re examine this branch. If I learn anything new, I will let you know.

Thanks,

Sara

Hi Sara, I have been looking at the census records for Patrick Gagen and his family as I am wondering if they could be related to my great great grandmother Anna Gegan. According to my records Anna was born in 1839 in County Galway. Her parents names were Patrick and Marie/Mary. I don't know when she arrived in the US but in 1856 she married Patrick Howard and lived the remainder of her life in Clarion County. Given the Patrick is of a similar age and also lived in Clarion County I wonder if he and Anna might be siblings. Have you found out any more information on Patrick since your original post back in 2004? I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Clare Spindler

Hello Susan,

My family descends from my great grandmother Estefana Gagen b.1876 Silver City, NM daughter of Richard Ford Gagen b.1851 Bow, Middlesex, England, son of George John Gagen b. 1819 Mile End, England, son of George Reader Gagen bp. 1794, West Lynn and so on. I actually live in California, USA. Thanks for replying to my post. Many of my g/g/ grandfather - Richard F. Gagen lived and stayed in Canada. It has been a mystery for sometime I believe for many of us to figure out where he came from and from what family he originated from. So glad we could make that connection. This family tree just keeps growing.

I was wondering if your Gagen family line descends from the same family line as mine. My ggGrandfather Richard Ford Gagen was the son of George John Gagen & Caroline Holland Gagen who migrated to Canada from England in the 1860's. I have connected with another distant cousin from line and hoping to find others. The furtherest grandparent from this line was William Gaging from Whitwell, England. Hopefully all of those that descend from this line can start putting this connection together. Hope to hear from you.
Hi
I have Mary's baptism as 30 Sep 1770 from IGI and FreeRegs but she is the daughter of Stephen Gagen (or Gaging as it is spelt) and Mary Bull and married William Girling 22 Nov 1792. Stephen and Mary married 13 Oct 1769 in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire. I haven't been able to trace either of them back further in either Norfolk or Lincolnshire. Mary was their eldest child and after her they had Ann (1772), William (1775-14 Mar 1856), Stephen (1779) and Jemima (1781). My husband, Chris Booty, is directly descended from William and ann Wilkins who married in Foulsham 5 May 1807.

I may have found your family, but this Richard was born in England, not Canada as your message states.

FreeBMD shows a marriage of George John Gagen and Caroline Holland, registered June quarter 1846 in Stepney, London.

1851 census Bow, Middx
George Gagen 31, architect
Caroline 29
Robert Gagen 3, George 1

1861 census Bow, Middx
George J. Gagen 41, architect and surveyor
Caroline 39
Robert 13, George J.11, Richard S. 9, Caroline 3
Alice A Holland 45, unmarried, sister-in-law, governess

The family does not appear on the 1871 census.

1880 U.S. census Grant, N.M.
Richard Gagen 28, born England, widower
Fanny 4, George 2, both born Grant N.M.
no mention of Daniel - perhaps Guadalupe died in childbirth, which was not uncommon back then.

Ancestry does not have much on Canadian census.
All I could find in 1901 was George Gagan 47, single, born England, rancher Assinoboi, The Territories.

Perhaps if you posted on a Canadian board someone out there would have access to more info.
I'm happy to help with what I can.
Margaret

The Irish spelling could be Geoghan or similar.
Finding your past is not to hard. If you know your fathers date of birth look for him. That should give you your grandfathers name and possibly his age. Again it is a question of looking him up but if he came from Ireland it may be more difficult but if you have a rough birth year it helps. The Gagen family name spelt as is originates from Holland/Germany or at least my ancestry does.

Trevor

Re Daniel Gagen
I believe he came from my mothers side of the family. Have heard about him though. This Gagen family were from near Kings Lynn in Morfolk. My grandfather was Earnest Harry, born 1890 near Downham market and I beleive Daniel was an uncle/great uncle. May give you something to go on. One of my aunts did trace the family line many years ago, hence my having heard of him. The family line was traced back to Holland, the Gagens having come to England at the time of William of Orange circa 1688.

I have dona a little research into the origins of GAGEN in the Norfolk Fens and it seems much more likely that the early families of Jacobus and Roberto came from Holland with or in response to Cornelius VERMUYDEN in the early 1600`s to drain the Fens. This very well docunented and much more reliable that the "story" about William of Orange. After the death of Jacobus and Roberto I have found no evidence of GAGEN in the Fens for 100 years or more when the families from further East (Whitwell and Reepham) settled there. These I have well documented. It is of course possible that the families from further East moved to Terrington to settle on much more fertile land that may have been owned by their forefathers.
