Hi: My grandfather born in 1885 was also Joseph Louis-married Amanda Palardy,His father was Louis Gagne mother Aurelie Ouimet. I have seen the birth of Joseph in the records for 1880, this is really a good one, why did they name 2 children with the exact name. Maybe just to add to the confusion. By the way Adelaid Boyer the first Louis's wife has an Alias (Delaguide Baguay) and is supposed to be her Indian name.I understand Simmone Boutin has the bible in Canada and thats what's recorded. Thought you would like to know. Cousin Bill

Hello, I am the person who started this chain of inquiries into the Tabacchi and Katsenstein families. My Dad took over the job years back but passed away this Feb, so I am going to take on this task again. I have a lot of info about Carlos and Dominico Tabacchi. The dates they arrived in the USA and most of their brothers and sisters also their children. If you would like to have it please let me know.
This info on the Gagne's is what I am excited about, I couldn't tie my gg grandmother Elmire to any one. I would love to get the information you have for that side of the family
Kris

Re: The Gagne dit St. Come dit St. Comb dit Sancomb family name EXISTENCE

Thank you for such a thorough exploration of the name!

As one of the descendants of Charles Gagne dit St. Come (one of the original immigrating brothers) it has been interesting to explore how the name morphed over time. Charles, as you indicated, came to New York as a Gagne, but was buried as a St. Come. His son Louis (my g-g-grandfather) was listed in Civil War records as Sancomb - and that spelling has stuck.

I'm glad that our "authenticity" as Gagnes has been cleared up, as it was distressing to be thought of as poseurs. The Sancomb family is, indeed, one of the American branches of the Gagne tree.

Mary Beth Sancomb-Moran

Yes, I know that you said that "Joseph and Carrie are two of the eight siblings" but my questions were:
Were they in Saginaw?

And, because the parents in the two marriage records are given as Thomas and Caroline or Carrie {Mother's birth surname not listed]---do you recognize the marriages I posted for Carrie and Joseph as being the children of Caroline Louprette? Virtually every French Canadien family had a son named Joseph.

Chris

Looking for any connections to this surname in Michigan, Minnesota and Quebec. Thomas Gagne married Caroline Louprette 1865 in Quebec, Canada and came to Michigan in or before 1870. Name changed in the United States finally settling on Gonea. Six of the children (Celina, Minnie, Caroline, Adeline, Lillian and Joseph) remained in Michigan while Fred moved to Minnesota some time after 1914.

Yes. They were in Saginaw. And, yes, Carrie and Joseph are the children of Thomas Gonea and Caroline Louprette.

The family first shows in Saginaw in the Michigan 1870 census. Between 1900 and 1905, they all move to Bay City--with the exception of Carrie (Caroline) who died in 1902.

The marriage record for Carrie and Joseph are correct for my family. Your record for Joseph is actually the SECOND marriage between Joseph and Blanche. They divorced in 1911 and remarried in 1912.

My records indicate Thomas and Caroline were married Oct 3, 1865 in St. Roch, Quebec. Does that match your family?
Hi:

I'm looking for the parents of Rosa/Rosie/Rosy Gonyea/Gonyou (most likely some form of Gagné/Gagnier/Desgagnés, etc.) born approximately 1833 in Quebec, married to an Alex/Aleck/Alexander/Alexandre Nedo (most likely Nadeau), born in Quebec in 1813. No idea when these two got married. No idea where they got married. Most likely not in Quebec (I can't find them in the Drouin). Living in the county of Leeds in Ontario according to 1871, 1881 censuses. Haven't been able to check the 1891 census. Died approximately 1903. Buried in the cemetary at St. Barnaby's Roman Catholic Church near Pittsburgh, Ontario. I have a photo of the tombstone. Any help would be appreciated.

Sheryl Curtis

The Gagne dit St. Come dit St. Comb dit Sancomb family name EXISTENCE

Hi Sharyn and all others researching the Gagne dit St. Come dit St. Comb dit Sancomb family.

Although this is an older post I am responding to, I thought it was important to add to what you had to say about the Gagne name and those researching the Gagne dit St. Come line.

Sharyn, you are absolutely correct - there are NO Canadian Church records detailing any Gagne's with the dit name of St. Come. But it does not mean that they did not exist nor that the people on this board are researching ancestors using incorrect surnames. Gagne is the correct surname we are all researching.

I am an advanced and experienced researcher and I guarantee you that I too am descended from a Gagne dit St. Come. My line is:
1. Pierre Gagne & Marguerite Rouzee

2. Pierre Gagne & Catherine Daubigeon

3. Joseph Gagne & Marie Josette Boudreau

4. Louis Amable Gagne & Marguerite Haguenier

5. Gabriel Gagne & Marie Louise Pincette dit Jolibois
(by the way her name is not listed as Marie-Louise Bericet-Jolybois in the micro-fiche copies I have of all their children's birth/baptismal records).

6. Julien Gagne dit St. Come & Marie Osite Gregoire. (Julien born: May 06, 1815, St. Joachim, Chateauguay, Quebec, Canada)
Julien's "known" brothers that lived beyond infancy:
6. Charles Gagne dit St. Come & Jovitte Sedilot dit Montreuil (Charles born: July 31, 1809, St. Joachim, Chateauguay, Quebec, Canada)
6. Jean Olivier Gagne dit St. Comb (born: September 13, 1819, St. Joachim, Chateauguay, Quebec, Canada)
6. Gabriel Gagne, Jr. (born Abt. 1800)

I have micro-fiche copies of all of the aforementioned Gagne brothers and countless records from the Gagne family in Canada and those that eventually migrated into the United States. I also have copies of all of the pages of the Gagne family genealogy data from Tanguay Dictionnaire Genealogique, by Cyprien Tanguay, Vol. 4, 1700-1760, Pgs. 119- 127.

After doing 9 years of labor intensive research just verifying data and corroborating it with official sources, and then again, cross-referencing it all yet again, I too, know that THE DIT NAME OF ST. COME DID NOT ARISE IN THE GAGNE FAMILY WHILE IN CANADA. And I think these researchers also need to know this. It is NOT SEEN IN ANY CANADIAN CHURCH RECORDS NOR IN THE TANGUAY GENEALOGIQUE DICTIONNAIRE.

If you'll notice, most researchers looking for the Gagne family members with the dit name of St. Come dit Sancomb are mostly in the United States, in New England, the majority researching Gagne's from New York and Massachusetts.

The St. Come dit name seems to have been generated and put into use by the above mentioned group of Gagne brothers who migrated into the United States from Canada - sons of Gabriel Gagne and Marie Louise Pincette Jolibois. Of Gabriel's "known" nine children, sons Charles, Julien and Jean Olivier, came into the state of New York. I'm not sure about Gabriel Jr.

In the census records dating all the way back from 1850 and through 1930 you can clearly follow these brothers and see them and their children bounce back and forth between using their Gagne birth names to St. Come, St. Comb and finally the anglicized Sancomb. Most variations of St. Come were simply spelling errors due to the enumerators spelling names phonetically since they were not allowed to ask citizens how to spell their name - all in the name of sparing them embarrassment since most were illiterate.

Officially, the first signs I encountered of when these brothers had taken on the dit name of St. Come was in the Church records of northern New York State, particularly St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chateaugay, Franklin Co., New York, where many of the Gagne brothers children were baptized, married and died. The priests officially used their parents given surnames of Gagne but almost always noted their dit names of St. Come, St. Comb or Sancomb within the official birth, baptism, marriage and death records of the church.

So the dit name did exist, Sharyn. But it seems to have been put to use only by the Gagne's when they crossed over the border into the United States, which is why the dit name is not noted within Canadian church records.

There were so many Gagne's coming into New England who bore the same first names that perhaps, they took on the dit name to differentiate themselves from others bearing the same name to prevent chaos and confusion. My second great grandfather, Julien was the first in MY line to come into the states and he along with his brothers, Charles and at least Jean took on the dit name, which is proven in the St. Patrick Church records of Chateaugay, New York, as it also is in the official church records of other New England States and towns. There are also other Gagne's in the New England states who took on the St. Come dit name. They may possibly be from the same family...perhaps cousins of my great, great grandfather and his brothers or perhaps other brothers I missed in my research. As of yet I have not made that familial connection.

Those researching these lines do need to realize that the St. Come/St. Comb/Sancomb names were only taken on by these brothers and others after they came to the United States so as your research goes further up you need to research the Gagne name and it's various spellings because the St. Come dit name is NOT used for this line once you get into researching them in Canada and it is not listed nor noted in their church records, which it would be.

Also those who are new to researching also need to realize that there are numerous other dit names that were taken on by the Gagne family.

I hope this clears up the confusion as to where or when the St. Come name came into use.
