Does anyone have any information about a William and Grace (nee: Kelley) Gainer who came from Ireland and were in Ontario Canada by 1851?
William Gainer (1812-abt.1850); Grace Kelley Gainer (1812-1858). They had 6 children: Alice Elizabeth b. 1833; Michael b. 1837; Margaret (or Mary) b. 1839 or 1842); Sarah b. 1844; Ann b. 1846; William J. b. 1847.
Alice married Edward Brannigan and they lived in Chicago. Michael married Annie ? and lived in Sumner Co, Kansas.
Margaret (or Mary) married John Moran and I am not certain where they lived.
Sarah married Dugald Walker and they moved to Detroit.
Ann married John Harrington but I don't know where they lived.
William J. married Clara Ellen Gardner and they moved to Noble County, Indiana.
Where were William and Grace from in Ireland? All their children were born in Ontario. I cannot find where in Ireland the Kelley's came from; and I have not been able to find what county in Ireland the Gainers were from.
Any ideas? Where should I start to look?
Thanks

Gainer family of Henry and Montgomery Co. Tennessee

Hi,

I researching the family of my g-g-g-g-great grandfather John Gainer. I know that he lived in Montgomery county Tennessee as early as 1799. He had a wife named Sally and in his will from 1803 he mentions her and 4 children: John [S.], Jesse [C.], Samuel and Polly. Jesse C. and John S. both moved to Henry county Tennessee. John Gainer also had a brother named Benjamin, who married Rebecca Raybourn (widow of Thomas Raybourn).

In 1819 a Sally Gainer left a will in Montgomery county Tennessee. I'm not sure she is John Gainer's widow, because the children she named were different: James C. Gainer, Sally Gainer, William Gainer and Georganne Holmes. She also mentions a Simon Holmes who "brought property here." I wonder if Simon Holmes is her daughter Georgeanne's husband? Shortly after Sally's death, John Gainer's heirs met at her house to divide up his property (which in his will he lent to his widow for the remainder of her life)

I am most interested to learn about any parents of John and Benjamin Gainer, and where the family lived before moving to Mont. co. TN (I suspect it was North Carolina). I'd also be interested in anything that could help prove that the Sally Gainer who left a will in 1819 is John Gainer's wife.

Please contact me with any questions/answers. I'd love to find out anything more about this family and share with you what I have found.

-Madeline
(stimplev10@aol.com)

Charles Gainer son of Harriett Digman and Randolph Gainer

I am looking for anyone at all who can give me any information on Charles Gainer. He was born 28 Jan 1888 in Kalamazoo, Barbour, West Virginia. It seems through my research he traveled to Canada having reached the border at Kingsgate, British Columbia the 26 May 1911. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force 5 Jan 1916. He lived in Green Ridge, Manitoba, Canada. I can't find anymore information on him, it's as though he's disappeared. None of my relatives here remember him. I would have to say he stayed in Canada, but can't find him in any Canadian Archives. If anyone can help me with information or links to a better site to look up ancestors in Canada it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

I know exactly what you mean. I would just love love love to find a document or anything for that matter, that would confirm Nancy's maiden name as Black. I know there has to be one out there somewhere. I live in Randolph County, one county over from Barbour. I may have to make a trip to the courthouse or library to see what I can find. Hopefully I can find some interesting data. Keeping my fingers crossed. Pictures (although a long shot) would be icing on the cake! I will keep you informed on anything new I find. Wish me luck, I am a woman on a mission. Talk to you soon, and thanks for replying.

The many Bryan K. Gainers make for some interesting problems with genealogy. The Black family was also often associated with the Gainers, having apparently been with them in the Valley of Virginia, through western Maryland, into what is now Barbour County WV. The Bryan K. Gainer of whom you speak, married to Sarah Vannoy, was in a long line of Bryan K Gainers. A Nancy Black was apparently married to one of them according to family tradition, but whether this Bryan's mother, grandmother or great-grandmother, it is difficult to say. This record would seem to imply that Nancy was indeed his mother, but where the name Rachael came from is very confusing. That they named their first daughter Rachael may be a clue as to the confusion. It is also not clear that Nancy's maiden name was Black - that is my speculation.

I have found some interesting information on Bryan K. Gainer who was married to Sarah Vannoy. I found his death record. The name of his parents that were listed were Bryan and Nancy Gainer. So am wondering where Rachel comes in? And I am wondering what was his father's mother's name actually was since now I know for sure it's not Rachel. This means his father's mother's name had to of been something totally different. I am finding so many discrepancies. Does anyone have any updates? The link to Bryan K. Gainer (husband of Sarah Vannoy) death record. http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_dcresults.aspx?LastName=Gain...

Hi Tina

I was so excited to see your post about the Latonia Cemetery in Gilmer County, WV

I am researching a couple lines up in that area.

I was wondering if you know anything about the Vannoy family (they were connected thru marriage to the Gainers)
that lived in Gilmer Co. You mentioned there were lots of Gainers and Vannoy buried on the hill where the church is - (what church is this - maybe the Chestnut Grove Baptist?

I ask because my records show Francis Vannoy 7/5/1795 -- 2/28/1853 and wife Mary Gainer were buried at the 'Chestnut Grove Baptist Church at Latonia near Glenville'

AND also Nancy Gainer wife of William Sanford Vannoy is said to be at the same cemetery.

I would dearly love to be able to get a copy of the information on the Gainers, Goffs and the Vannoys buried there!
Pictures would be MARVELOUS!!!!

If you have a scanner you could e-mail the info to me, or sending it snail mail would probably be easier and faster - I am SOOOOO excited to see what you could find for me!!

I know this would involve quite a bit of time and OF COURSE I would pay you for your time and the price of any copies and postage.

I will be waiting anxiously to hear from you!
Thanks Ginger! I wasn't getting too hung up on spelling of Gaynor vs Gainer, since spelling had not yet been standardized back then. But that is a good clue, because they probably had their family traditions, assuming they could write. Gainestown is another good idea. I'm going to Spain (my daughter is studying abroad there) and France (on the way home from visiting her) this year for vacation so I won't get to Ireland once again.

My name is Ginger (Virginia) Gainer and I am a descendant of Cornelius Gainer. I was in Ireland this past week and did go to Granard in County Longford. The county had lots of Gaynors. I went to the library to inquire about the Gainer line and the librarian herself was a Gaynor (married name). She had a Granard genealogy register which went back to the mid 1700's, where the last Gainer (of this spelling) listed was a Patrick Gainer in 1765. This is definitely the area. I think the name came from a version of the town name, "Granard". There is, however, in the area, I believe County Meath, a small town named "Gainestown", which would have only had to have the "R" dropped to be the original town. So, there were some Gainer's still there at that point. I couldn't find anybody by that spelling in the area currently. Perhaps more searching of the Gainer name in Ireland currently would yield results. There was a census in Ireland in 1911 that is frequntly referred to for tracing roots. I'd be delighted to hear any other info anyone has. My line of Gainers is from Uniontown, PA., my father and grandfather were James E. Gainer, Jr. and Sr.

I meant that George's Creek is listed as birth place in your family tree for some of the Polings and Gainers or Sturms or Ayers - can't remember exactly, and one family tree mentioned Bryan Sr as dying there! Sorry for all the misplaced and missing modifiers! Papa Gainer may be rolling in his grave because of my bad grammar!

Thanks Cousin John -

I hope you are well, and happy in your new home.

I went to visit my Dad last week, and am going again next week. He is doing better but it is very difficult for him to walk. I hope to take him to the reunion in August, but my son starts college for the first time, and my daughter goes to study abroad in Spain around the same time, so we will have to see what the timeline is for all this.

On my way to my Dad's, I drove past George's Creek Maryland where some of the trees say some of our relations are from, and some say Bryan Gainer Sr (father of George and Bryan) died. There isn't much to it - just a collection of houses, but I liked it. There is a parking lot for the Great Allegheny Passage very close, so I took the opportunity to ride along the ridge of Mount Savage. Lovely! I also liked the town of Mount Savage that I drove through. I don't know how to do genealogical searches, but I do so like going to some of the sites to get the feel for where they lived.

- Tina

Do you think that the fact that there are so many Bryan's is that they're passing down the family name? I was able to find the record of Bryan K. Gainer whose parents were Nancy Black and Bryan K. Gainer. On one family tree that I came across, it said his birth was 1769 and that he died in 1863, I just find it odd that someone during that period of time would of lived such a long life. I mean 94 was a rare age to live to during those days, because of disease and such. I was able to see this particular Bryan K. Gainer's death record and it said he died in June 6, 1888 and that he was 73 yrs old. Which would of placed his birth around 1815 and not 1769. It said his cause of death was from Pneumonia. So I think you may be right in that there are gaps in some of the information and may be some crucial links missing. I would love to be able to unlock those clues. I was able to do most of the research I've already done through West Virginia Vital Research Records.com. It is a free site and you're able to look up death records/certificates, birth certificates, and marriage licenses. I would also like some links to more sites that have more information about this branch of Gainer's. If anyone can help me with that, it would be much appreciated. Or possible links to photographs of people, if any do exist. Thanks so much.

~Angela Gainer-White

Tina,

I'm glad you are doing some additional research into the family. I intended to when I retired, and I am retired, but selling real estate and don't have a whole lot of free time. My tree, is really a compilation of many sources, including some family sources. I'm sure there are mistakes in it and I'm glad that you are looking at it in detail. I still have your last email to me and I apologize for not getting back to you, but I intend to.

About the Cornelius's in your Grandfather's tree.....I have not seen any evidence of them in any materials I have looked at. The only Cornelius's that I found were descendants of George and Sarah Johnson Gainer. I did note that Sarah's Grandfather on her Mother's (Vannoy)side was named Cornelius. That is where I assumed the first Cornelius came from, not on the Gainer side at all.

Dr. Patrick Gainer relied on family sources back then and very possibly it could have been mixed up as it was handed down from generation to generation. Or maybe not, but it is extremely difficult to find any documentation that far back. I wouldn't be surprised if we are never able to trace a definitive ancestor back to Ireland. But, I don't think there is any doubt Ireland is where we originated and about the same time frame as we have postulated in the early 1700s. I recently participated in the National Geographic DNA swab program and almost all of those who matched my DNA claim their ancestry as Ireland.

Again, I hope you continue your research and I certainly have an open mind about what is on my tree and when you find mistakes, I'll be more than happy to correct them.

Hope to see you and some of your family at the Gainer Reunion this Fall. Your Dad attended for several years. I hope he is doing better as I haven't heard about him recently. The Gainer Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Nestorville Community Center. Here is a link to my Gainer Family Tree site: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/g/a/i/John-D-Gain...

Take care and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.

Cousin John Gainer
20 Cabern Drive
Hurricane, WV 25526
Re: Cornelius Gainer

I have tried to read the Lang article and it is very confusing. It is hard to tell if George W Gainer is talking about HIS Grandfather, or his Grandfather's grandfather! And I think some of it is about both, and both right and wrong. Personally, I've come to believe that the Bryan K Gainer married to Polly Kirkendall which the Lang article says is the original emigrant of Ireland is really the son of the original, or even grandson. We have a tradition of a Brian Gainer born to a Cornelius Gainer in 1742 in VA or MD, and there is someone of that age range "known" to have been married to a Mary, living in VA and moving to MD. How this is "known" is NOT known to me, but asserted in the post I read about the Lang article (I think by you).

Since Polly is a nickname of Mary, and there were Kirkendalls in VA, and other Polly Kirkendalls popping up in census data, I am thinking that Brian (or Bryan) and Polly are not the original Irish heads of the family, but a later generation born in the 1740s and the parents of the George and Bryan (born in the 1760s) who later settled in Randolph (now Barbour) and then Gilmer counties in WV.

This tells me that there is hope yet that Grandpa Gainer (Dr. Patrick W Gainer) was right all along and that it was a Cornelius who came to America in 1725. But I still think a generation is missing. There are trees with a Bryan K Gainer born in 1724 married to Nancy Black born in 1728 and those dates seem to be vetted somehow, though I don't know how. Right now in MY tree I called the 1725 Bryan "Cornelius" out of respect for Grandpa, but let his wife be Nancy Black out of respect for John Gainer whose tree gives those dates. I'm assuming the immigration to US occurred around 1740 when there was a time of famine looming, also mentioned as family tradition in the Lang article.

Also out of respect for Grandpa I have the 1742 Bryan listed in my tree as children of said Cornelius and Nancy. But that makes them mighty young parents! This 1742 Bryan is not in John Gainer's tree at all. I give the 1742 Bryan Polly Kirkendall as his wife. This still doesn't do full justice to Grandpa because he had the immigration occurring in 1725. I guess I could call The 1725 Cornelius "Bryan" again, to line up with John's tree, and add a Cornelius born around 1705. Maybe there is more than one generation missing! Too many Bryans!

As for Gainertown Ireland, I intend to check into Granard Town in County Longford if I ever get the chance to go over there. Granard is the name of the Barony from which one of the clans of Gaynor sprung. I think the name of the town morphed out of the same name that Gaynor did, so in essence, Gainertown might be a synonym to Granard Town. I have to check into that more though. It is just a thought.

- Tina Gainer Barton

Gainertown Ireland

Let it be noted that I'm a lazy genealogist. What I find is usually from the comfort of my recliner, with my laptop as my only resource.

There's been much ado about whether a Cornelius or a Bryan K. Gainer came from some mysterious place called Gainertown Ireland. No doubt someone came from Ireland, and no doubt, they migrated through Virginia to Allegany County Maryland (possibly now Garrett County), and from there, it appears of 4 children, 2 went to what is now Gilmer, and 2 went to what is now Barbour. There appears to have been much communication and intermarrying between the branches.

But where and what is Gainertown? I suspect that Gaynor is the typical spelling of the name in Ireland. Most of them SEEM to have been centered in Longford County, near Lough Gowna (a lake named after a calf).

Here's something about a "baronie" called Granard, I think from wikipedia in a Longford County History post.

Granard - Anciently this was part of a territory known as Cairpre Gabra, alias Corpre Tethbae, or North Teffia. The barony was formed from the territory of Clanshane (Granard, Abbeylara, and part of Colmcille parishes), and from the territory of Slewcarberie (Clonbroney and part of Colmcille parishes). Muintir Geradhain was located on the west side of Lough Gowna, where Ó Geradhain (Gaynor or MacGinver) is mentioned as lord here in the 11th century.

Granard Town - There is a town in the Granard Territory called Granard and sometimes Granard Town. Seems like Gainertown could be a corruption of Granard Town but of course this is just speculation. Has anyone been to Granard? Might be a good place to check out.

Here's more on the Gaynor surname which is probably already posted because I'm sure I've seen it somewhere. Maybe on facebook. :-)

Mac Fhionnbhair, chief of Muntergeran, is recorded as being on the west side of Lough Gowna in the present county of Longford. Muntergeran, a shortened anglicized form of Muintir Geradhain and the eponymous ancestor of the family of Gaynor or MacGinver was Fionnbhair (Finbar) Ó Geradhain, who was lord of that area in the eleventh century. A hundred years ago the normal anglicization was Maginver with the synonym Gaynor already coming into more general use. MacGinty found synonymous with Gaynor in south Ulster appears as a principal name in Co. Westmeath in the "census" of 1659. Westmeath and Cavan which with Co. Longford are the counties in which the name is chiefly found today. The prefix Mac becomes Mag, first in speech and later in the written word, so that Mag Fhionnbhair is now the normal form in Irish. Ó Geradhain is identified with Ó Géaráin, a Hy Fiachrach sept located in Erris (Mayo). This sept of Ó Géaráin seems to be almost extinct today. There was another sept of the same name, anglicized O'Gerane and later Geran, which is listed among the principal names in that county in 1659. This survives there today as Guerin. Some of our Guerins may be of different origin, Guérin being a French Huguenot surname

Just found your post on Alice Gainer. I believe this is my Alice Gainer. I have info on her and would like to compare. If you check the 1885 census you will find the family on it in Belle Plaine. Alice married an Elmer Cornwell and they moved to Missouri. As far as Michael Gainer, her father, I believe that is him on the on 1895 Kansas Census with 3 children and a wife Nannie. But have no other info and unable to locate any records. Do not know if Michael Gainer wife Annie died. Michael Gainer was born in Canada abt 1840.
