Galizia from Sant'Ilario to Toronto, Canada

I'm helping a cousin trace her great-grandmother, Elisabetta Galizia. We found a 1923 EI manifest which shows her enroute to Toronto with her daughter, Teresa Scionti. Going to Teresa's husband Gaetano "Guy" Altomonti. She also had a son, Vincenzo Scionti who might have been in Wooster, OH, Koppel and New Galilee, PA. Elisabetta's husband was Giuseppe Scionti but he does not appear in the 1923 EI manifest so was probably dead by then. The family was from Sant'Ilario dello Ionio, Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Galizia Family from Mormanno, Cosenza Italy

I am looking for information about my Galizia relatives. My grandfather, Michele Galizia was born 29 Nov 1895 in Mormanno Italy. He immigrated to the US in 1912 and settled in Hartford CT.

His father's name was Giuseppe and his mother's name is Domenica (maiden name not known). He had 2 brothers - Luigi (married to Francesca Pandolfi, one son Joseph but I think they returned to Italy) and Rocco (lived in Brazil) and a sister, Teresa of Italy.

Michele died in Hartford, CT 5 May 1936, and I have no information on his family.

I suspect your gr- gr- grandmother Theresa Marini was my gr- gr- grandmother Rachele's sister. Rachele Marini(1824-1922) married Giancinto DiMestico (1826-1872). The widowed Rachele DiMestico immigrated from Cassano to Boston, about 1891, and stayed with her DiMestico family in Hanson, MA. She lived to be at least 98 years old.

Angela
I don't think it's the same family. My Grandmother's maiden name was changed to Verner at Staten Island when they came over. She grew up in the Pittsburgh area then married a Galizia and moved to Beaver Falls, PA. I really am not sure of my grandfather's name, ipossibly James or some form of Vincent or possible Victor.

Thankyou for answering my post.
Becky
Becky -

Were your grandmother and grandfather married? was galizia her maiden name?

Here's what I have, although I don't think it is what you need...

Fedele Galizia m. Theresa Marini abt 1850 in italy

children:

Mary b. 1856 married Vincent Dimestico
Fortunata (aka Fatonia, Mary) b. 1853 married Biase Palopoli
Theresa married Frank Oliver
Frank (Fidel) married Kate (Rachella) Peluso

As far as I know, they all stayed in the Massachusetts area. There are a ton of Galizias in Cassano allo Ionio, Italy. Perhaps that's where they came from.

Good luck!

angela

Leah -

Not so distant cousins at all!! My grandfather was Louis Dimestico who was your grandfather's brother. Apparently there was some kind of argument between the 2 of them and they never spoke to each other. My mom thinks it happened around the time when they were working together in the shoe factory and perhaps something to do with the union as my grandfather was a union leader.

I still am in touch with all my dimestico cousins, except for your family. I would love to chat! Email me at angela_fox@msn.com. I have much info on the children of vincenzo and mary gallizia. I also go back a few generations in Italy.

looking forward to hearing from you!!

angela

Hi Angela! I think we must be distant cousins. My Great Grandparents were Maria Galliza and Vincenzo DiMestico. DiMestico was my maiden name. My Grandfather was Giovanni Battiste (John Francis)DiMestico who was born to them in Boston on April 13, 1888. I just visited their graves in Whitman, Ma. last year. I have more info on their decendents if you need it. And I would love to have any info from their Boston era & Italian heritage. I had heard that Vincenzo was from Calabria. Please feel free to e-mail me.

Galizia from Cassano Italy to Eastern Massachusetts

I am researching the Galizia family that originates in Cassano Italy, some of whom came to eastern Massachusetts in the late 1800's. I have traced our family back to Fedele Galizia and Theresa Marini who were married sometime around 1850.

Any additional information would be welcome!

thanks

Hi there. I don't know if this will help you....but I have been researching my GGmother, Mary Gallizia who married Vincenzo Dimestico in Italy and then they came to the US in around 1889. (When they came to the US, they settled in Boston and most of my family still resides in the area. )

Anyway, in the course of my research, I found MANY Gallizias in a town in Italy called Cassano allo Ionio in Cosenza. Perhaps your ancesters came from there.

I am just starting to get through all of the info I have from there but if you want me to look at something specific, let me know.

thanks!

Angela

Good luck. I will continue to search and hopefully find something that will help me to know who was who and what everyone did back as far as possible.
Are we related??

I think we may have to dig a little deeper to see if we are related. Somewhere along the line I am sure we must be. Do you have any elderly relatives you can ask about other branches of the tree? Most of mine who would have been in Flushing in the 40's are gone. If you would like to continue e mailing me you can send me e mails at my e mail address. A4EVATNT@AOL.COM

Galizia's from Flushing

Hi Toni Ann
My Maternal Grandparents Lived in Flushing
in the early 40's then moved to Springfield Gardens . They have now since passed on
My Grandfathers name was Pietro and Grandma
was Bettina( Betty),My Mother attended grade school in Flushing but went to Needle Trades High School in Manhattan . Grandpa had 2 brothers , Uncle Mike who lived in Conn. and Uncle Dominick who lived upstate New York where he raised his family. My Paternal GrandParents were also from Flushing and lived there till they died quite awhile ago. They lived on Budd Place then moved to Franklin Avenue, They had one of those old Farm Houses (14 rooms on the 1st floor and they all had fire places) and when they died and the house was sold the builder tore it down and put 11/ 2 family houses on the site. It still bothers me to go in that area, My uncle Paul use to own Maple Crest Greenhouses, there was a diner across the street from his business called The Blue Bird Diner . I think his place is now a parking lot for Meat Farms and whatever else they fit into that area.
I don't know if any of My Galizias are related to Your Galizias but it was nice to hear from someone, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I was away on vacation and I just got back today.
Thanks Again!
Tony Mancuso
