Hi, I'm also looking for a James Gall, also known as Jimmy. I don't know much about him as my family lost contact with him in the 50s. The James I'm looking for was born 1920 in Dundee - Scotland. Does this match any of your details?
Thanks
GALL Cemetery

I have located a GALL cemetery that is located 4-5 miles NW of Lesterville, South Dakota and about 7 miles south and 2-3 miles east of Scotland, SD in Bon Homme County. I am finding no "on-line" posting of the burials in this cemetery and have had no luck getting area Funeral Homes to respond to my communications. Can anyone tell me who to contact to get a list of these burials. I am a GALL descendant and suspect this cemetery will have many of my kinfolk since their first home in the USA was in Bon Homme county near Menno.

Re.Galls of Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in the 18/19th centuries?

About a year ago I posted my last enquiry under the same title. Since then I have been lucky enough to come by some further iformation on my family. I discovered some missed pages in a family bible that gave that (in about 1707) an Archibald Gall married an Agnes Kemble. They had four of a family who were -
1)William Gall, b.1709,who married an unknown Janet. No further details were given.
2)John Gall, b.1711, my direct ancestor, m. Agnes Whyte in 1737
3)Adam Gall, b.1715. No information given.
4)Archibald Gall, b.1720. who married and had family though no wife's name was given.

I am wondering if 4)Arhibald's wife could have been Janet Dick, as some of the names given in the family bible correspond to names I have found in the records.
Records have given me the following:
Archibald bapt.1754
John bapt.1757
Elizabeth 1759
Agnes 1, 1761
Agnes 2, 1762
Grizel, 1765
an unnamed daughter, 1766
Mary, 1769
Jean, 1771
James 1774
William, 1777.

The family bible only gives me Archibald, Elizabeth, Jean and William, but they are in the same order as in the records, and also gives Archibald and Robert as William's sons, where the records have them as the first two of William's family. More family followed and William remarried after his first wife died, and had several more children.

If Archibald who married Janet Dick is the brother of my John, then I have solved the puzzle of who my ggg gf was visiting in about 1850 at Crawfordjohn (see my last post) - William was his cousin. However it doesn't solve the problem of the relationship to the family of a George Gall (m.Kathren Greenshields?). Two of their grandsons were to be found at Crawfordjohn Mill in 1881 which is where the above William died in 1852. I had hoped George was another brother of my ancestor 2)John!

I wonder if anyone can unravel this jigsaw, and if so, are there any descendants of these families reading this? I have some info from gravestones at Crawfordjohn, and I have had contact with a couple of folk, namely Sally Cutler and Jennifer Gall who are descendants of Archibald who m. Janet Dick. Another thing! Because of the common naming pattern tradition, I had guessed that parents of Archibald were likely to be Archibald and Agnes, which also ties them in to my family. (I don't know if Janet's parents were John and Elizabeth. They should be! I'll see if there is a record of them).
You may like to read my other post too if this one seems confusing! I just so want to sort this out!

I'd also like to find out about 3)Adam's family as there is also in the OPRs a family descended from an Adam Gall in the same parish who could be connected!

I think I must do some more digging!
Hoping to hear from someone re these families of mine! Can I just ask that if you are not looking for these particular Galls of Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire, you start a new thread instead of answering this one. You'll have more chance of getting the right people reading and hopefully answering.
All the best
Eveeanne aka Evelyn Inglis

They moved to Victoria on Vancouver Island and when his mother died in 1887 she was living at Yates Street. Her name was Sara Halman Margaret (nee Hitzler) GALL.

George appears to have moved to Montreal at some point and is listed there in the 1881 census living with his wife Alicia and children George, Henry and Arthur. Also in the household was Ellen GALL (born around 1808) and Eveline his sister born in 1859.

Looking for thier descendents.

South Dakota Gall Surname

I am interested in communicating with people researching GALL surname with South Dakota connections. From my research it appears nearly all the Gall folk with South Dakota connections had German ancestors from Worms, S. Russia. They detrained in Yankton,SD and spread from there throughout South Dakota. I am trying to collect information on Johann George Gall (b 6 Jan 1801 in Hoffenheim, Germany) and Magdalena Holzwarth (b. abt 1802 in Germany) and their descendants. One of the brother's went from Yankton to Sutton, NE so there will be a branch growing out of Sutton as well.

I have never been able to trace our family out of the US, but do believe the Gall family has a European ancestry ~ most likely French or Italian. Will check with other family members to find out what they have come up with and get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you.

Dale Louise Gall Odom

I am also descended from Gall surname and they shipped from Hamburg, Germany after traveling from Worms, S. Russia to emigrate to the USA. In the early 1800's they were living in Hoffenheim, Germany but accepted Catherine the Great's invitation to settle land that was new to Russia in the Black Sea area. In the late 1800's the political climate changed and continued to worsen and my Gall kin got out of that area while the getting was good and ended up settling in South Dakota. Would you have any connection to this S. Russian German Galls?

I am also researching the GALL surname. My Gall kin came from approximately the area you indicate (Hoffenheim, in Southern Germany). They accepted Catherine the Great's invitation to move to South Russia (today the Ukraine) in the early 1800's and then on the the USA in the last quarter of the 1800's. I have history back to Hans Gall (b. 1576 in Oppernweiler, Backnang, Wurttemberg)but don't have any mention of Anthony or Tony Gall. You might post a query on the Rootsweb's Germany or Austria board and find some help. My Gall kin detrained at Yankton, SD and mostly remained in the South Dakota area. However, one brother (with a peg leg) went "South" and I think I found him in Sutton, Nebraska. Also, have you tried USGENWEB's listing for Linn County you mention in Missouri? I've found a lot of local help through these county sites and there are usually volunteers willing to do some leg work for you at the county level.

My GALL kin came to USA from Worms, S. Russia in 1874 and detrained at Yankton, SD. They settled near Scotland, SD and when land opened West of the Missouri River, they squatted on land in Gregory County, SD near Fairfax. I am interested in communicating with folk interested in this family. Following is an outline of what I have accumulated on this family.

Page 1 of 3 Monday, April 28, 2008 7:34:10 AM
Outline Descendant Report
............ 1 Johann Georg Gall (1801 - )
............ + Magdalena Holzwarth (1802 - )
.................. 2 George Johann Gall (1831 - 1907)
.................. 2 Johann Michael Gall (1833 - 1835)
.................. 2 Johann Gall (1835 - )
.................. + Caroline ?
.................. + Margareth Kauk ( - 1877)
........................ 3 Elisabethe Gall (1858 - 1862)
........................ 3 Johann Gall (1859 - 1941)
........................ 3 Elisabeth Gall (1862 - 1925)
........................ 3 Jacob Gall (1864 - 1914)
........................ + Sophia ?

My ggggrandfather [Johan] George Gall came from Zutzendorf in Bas-Rein, and his wife Margaret Donnenwirth came from Urwiller. George was a weaver. I have no information about siblings. George and Margaret, with four children -- namely Margaret, George, John, and Catherine --crossed the Atlantic after 1825 and before 1830, settling first in Stark County Ohio. Two daughters and two sons moved west to Kosciusko County, Indiana. Margaretta Gall Kurtz remained in Stark County.

Marianne Gall

Hi! I am looking for the marriage date for Marianne Gall and Joseph Richard Warwick. Marianne was born July 17, 1957 in Scott County, Iowa USA. She married Edgar Amoury Santos (born on April 11, 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA) on September 08, 1980 in Missouri. They were divorced on July 25, 1988. There were no children born to this union. Marianne then married Joseph Richard Warwick (born July 23, 1957 in Alponto, California). I believe they were married in Denmark. I do not know the date or exact location. Three children were born to this union. I also need the birth date of their youngest, Calli Robin Warwick. I believe she was born in or near Bremerhaven West Germany at the Bremerhaven medical center. My email address is: darleneproeger@yahoo.com Thank you for your assistance.

Hi,
my name is Caroline Ellison and I live in Australia. An Archibald Gall who married and wife Euphemia Marion Logan (nee Wilson) arrived in Adelaide departing from Greenock. His address was listed as Westown Lesmahagow (hard to read) in 1939. He died in 1890 aged 72 years which would make him born around 1808. Euphemia died in 1883 aged 61 years which means she was born around 1822. So she was about 17 when she came to Australia.

Do you think these are relatives of yours

Regards
Caroline

I used one of your links to Linn County late last night and came up with a Bill Gall under one of the church links to Bear Branch church in the area. I have not heard of this Bill, so it must be a missing link of some sort.

I have my doubts I'm related to jeremy, but possible. I know my great, great grandmother Mary Gall came over in 1883,and assuming my G,G,grandfather did too, whatever his name was. They had 6 children, 4 are accounted for,but no trace of the other two. A couple of these childrens, children moved towards the St. Louis area in the early 1900's,so there isnt too many generations while here in the US to spread out. I dropped my subscription to this site,so it wont let me get your email. You can email me direct at mgall@cvalley.net and we can talk some more. Thanks for your help and interest.

Need help finding Tony Gall's father

I am researching my lineage of Gall's. I have traced my roots back to Tony Gall. My great grandfather. his mother was Mary, and his brothers John and Mike Gall, and sister Rosa, all from Linn co. New Boston, Missouri. Mary immigrated here in 1882/1883,john was born and immigrated in 1883, so I am sure Mary's immigration date is 1883, not 1882. Mike's (born 1870)immigration date is 1883 also. Tony was born in 1889,and Rosa in 1886, both in Missouri. so their father had to be here. Mary remarried in 1894 to a Peter Reidle, or later spelled Riddle, listed in the census of 1910, Tony is listed as stepson. Thats where I'm assuming Mary is his mother. No mention of Tony,John,Mike or Rosa's father in anything I can find. Something happend to him between the birth of Tony in 1889 and Mary's remarriage in 1894. Mary and her husband came from Austria/German as well as Mike and John. Does anyone have any idea how I can find my great, great grandfathers name, ship they came over on, or place of Origin in Austria?

Thank you for your reply, I'll check out those other links you posted. I am having the missouri archives do some research for me and so far nothing has turned up. I went to a nursing home yesterday to talk with a distant cousin that was a niece of my great grandfathers, turns out she passed away in May, so came to another dead end. I'd sure like to find out where we came from around Germany. Wished my family had written some of this down or asked someone before they pass away and the information is lost forever.

Hi Jeanie,

Carl August Gall, d.o.b. May 27th 1918 was my father. So, August Gall was my great-grandfather. My father passed away in 1965-66, I believe. Not sure of exact date, however I was quite young. It would be very interesting to receive any information on our family. I just decided to look up Carl Ray Gall after I spoke to my brother, Gus Gall.
Thanks
Teresa
tplanka@yahoo.com

Hi Bertha,

It's been a VERY LONG time! I am Gus's sister, we met when you and Gus were married in Texas, Remember?? I just got off of the phone with Gus and he had informed me that Carl Ray, born June 6th, 1944 (1945?), passed away about 3-4 years ago. Sounds like complications from a shipyard accident. Gus was contacted by Carl's wife recently. My married name (3 years now) is Planka, Miller (maiden), obviously Gall growing up! How are you? Write when you can.
Teresa

John Albert Gall of Berlin

I am looking for a Gall family from Berlin Germany who emmigrated to the US about 1900 (latest 1907).
My great-grandfather, John Albert Gall, has a WWI draft card that list him being born 11 May 1894 in Berlin. My grandfather said his gradfather was a brewer who moved to the US and was killed when a horse-drawn brew cart crushed him. John Albert Gall had a brother, Harry E, born 11 Oct 1900, possibly just after the Galls arrived in the US.

John's WWI Draft card list him as living in New Brunswick, NJ, as a toolmaker/machinist, and having been a bugler for 3 years in the marines. I have not been able to find any additional information on his family. Any help would be appreciated.

I have only noticed a few large blocks of Galls: Great Britain (mostly Scottish), German, Hungarian, and a few in France. Of course all of these Galls are represented in the US, and there are a few spread out over India and South America. Maybe I will try to catalog them all one day. Italy? It may be like Russia in that Galls from other regions went to Italy before coming to the US, but I'm not sure that there are that many Galls from Italy. That said, there are actually not that many in France, and even a smaller number in the area of Alsace-Lorraine, so there is a better chance of finding your relatives if you think they are from there!

PS. I noticed you have an uncommon name, Odom. Any relation to the late Gen. William Odom?

I have traced my family to Alsace also, in particular to the village that is now Bouxwiller, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, Frace. I have attached GEDCOM for one branch of Galls, ancestors of John James (Jean Jacques) and Frederic, who came to the US in the 1890s.

Any relation to this branch? I have a much larger database of Galls in Bouxwiller that I am stitching together, and will likely expand it outward to the rest of Alsace, Lorraine, Germany, France, and maybe farther if I have the time (or write a program to automate it!) There are many George and John Gall's from even this small village, though, so I may already have your relatives in the database if you give me more information.

Gall's in International Genealogical Index

I want to tell everyone about a wonderful resource and a project I am starting around it. The International Genealogical Index is a resource of the LDS, and their members submit family trees, sometimes with sources. More importantly, though, they have microfilmed many original sources, such as birth and marriage civil registrations in France. The records include a way to order the microfilms from an LDS Family History Center.

Taking cues from zollinger-genealogy.com, I just downloaded all the records with the same surname from the town I was interested in, which was several hundred! I kept merging similar records until I didn't see any more obvious duplicates, and when I was finished I looked at my known ancestor (Frederick Gall of Alsace-Lorraine), and sure enough there was a family three going back four generations, with a list of brothers and sisters in each generation!

I am in the process of looking for software to automate this process, or I may write it myself, to see if I can connect more members outside Bouxwiller, Alsace, France! Even in that little town I have several different Gall families each containing several generations!
